The Hero of the Kingdom games can best be compared to the point and click hidden object games of Artifex Mundi. While there are no specific hidden object scenes, you do have to look for, and click on tiny objects. Another similarity is the backtracking to pass obstacles. For example, a bridge is out, and you need three pieces of stone, a rope, twelve ocelot furs, an eskimo translator, and a toaster oven in order to repair the bridge. You remember that there was an old woman in a village a couple of screens back that offered to give you her toaster oven in exchange for a potion that will treat her husbands ED. You also know that a rural healer specializing in potions is in need of an attorney for his practicing medicine without a license case. Additionally, you met an out of work attorney, who will take any case as long as you can provide him with five hundred gold coins, and a "personal massage device". Such is the recursive nature of this type of game, and although it can be frustrating at times, the bizarre Goldbergian machinations somehow appeal to my sense of humor. I mean, there is currency in the game, gold coins actually, yet so many transactions have to be completed with some random item the NPC desires instead. Imagine if you took your car in for repair, and instead of money, the mechanic demanded a live elk. Such is the world the Hero of the kingdom inhabits. While I'm at it, I must say, this guy has got to be one of the most inept, clumsy heroes around, because it seems like every other time I use any sort of tool, it breaks. Going fishing? Oops. broke the rod, have to buy a new one. Harvesting flowers? Oops, broke the sickle, have to, wait, hold on, why did you even need a sickle to pick flowers? Anyway, you get the point. Mr. Hero is no Bob Villa, and if he ever asks you to borrow any tools, just remember that this is a guy who can break a piece of steel on a flower stem. In conclusion, to sum it up, to summarize, to wrap it all up, to encapsulate, to distill, um, I forget what I was going to say. I guess if you like pointy clicky roundabout games, this is one and if you don't, it still is.

Basically, if you enjoyed Hero of the Kingdom I, this is more of the same, and when I mean more of the same, I really mean more of the same. The gameplay structure is mostly untouched, as is the UI/map/sound/etc. and that isn't really a bad thing here. This series is a causal resource-management set of games and the familiarity between titles makes it very easy to jump right into this. You'll be collecting x amount of items y and z so the miller's wife can sell you bread without skipping a beat. The story is super generic fantasy and comes with a stiff English translation. The visuals are very nice and the style really works well. There are no annoying technical issues or gimmick gameplay bits to get in the way of you fetch-questing for the rest of the kingdom. There are a couple of downsides, though. HotKII is a bit longer than the first game, but this is mainly because item amount requirements can get kind of sizable and repetitive at times. Building the boat is probably the biggest example of this. The other problem I had is that there is some pixel-hunting required at times for items that don't visually "pop" from the rest of the art and don't have an "action" command signposting them. There's only a couple of instances of you having to do this to progress but it can be quite annoying when you can't find the blacksmith's toolbox or whatever since it's super tiny and just blends into the background without doing anything in particular to draw your eye to it. In short, if you liked the first game, you should probably pick this up. If you've never played the first one and find this in a bundle a year from now, it's a nice, little resource management game where you can't find yourself in a fail state and is oddly relaxing and addicting to play. It'll take about five hours or so to see everything there is to see but it's an enjoyable, light game that is ideal for zoning out and chilling. One last thing, you can continue playing after beating the game, so unlike the first one, there's no worry about a point of no return.

I played the first one about 2 years ago. I enjoyed it, and I got 100% of the achievements. I recently got around to posting a review for it. For this sequel, I expected similar gameplay, but bigger and better. I wasn't disappointed. Just like the first one, this is a casual game that plays like an adventure RPG, point & click, resource management, and hidden object all in one. The difference between the two is that this one has a much larger and varied world, more quests, more ways to "craft" and make money, and a bit more depth in the story. I'm very fond of the graphics, too. They have gotten better since the first. For a game made by 2 guys (according to the About/Credits), this is a spectacular casual game. I wish there was some replay value to it, but there isn't really anything different to do once all of the achievements are unlocked. If you played Hero of the Kingdom, then my review will be very short: Hero of the Kingdom II is just "more of the same", and this says enough. If you did not played previous part... well, you can play Hero of the Kingdom II and not worry about storyline. These two games are not connected with each other and their storylines do not cross. In fact, second part contains a couple of tiny references to the first part, but... it does not matter. So. You move between locations, collect different objects, interact with characters and solve quests. Game is very calm and leisurable, there is absolutely no hurry - just enjoy beautiful surroundings, filled with a lot of small lovely details. In my opinion, art-style in Hero of the Kingdom II is excellent. The plot is very simple, naive and absolutely predictable. Unfortunately, game is completely linear and there is no replayability. To be honest, there is a couple of quests where you can try alternative way of solving, but it is only a timid and hesitant step on the way to diversity. Sometimes Hero of the Kingdom II can be quite tedious. Gameplay is mainly focused on searching for hidden objects. Some quests require a large amount of resources, and it is not hard to collect them, just tedious. On the other hand, in my opinion, hidden objects in this game are much easier to find than in the previous part. I still remember how I searched for mushrooms in Hero of the Kingdom - it was a nightmare and I almost hate mushrooms now! In Hero of the Kingdom II I managed to find all items much faster. I still do not understand what is the meaning of artifacts. To find these items, you need to complete a relatively long quests (I mean - "long" for this simple and short game), then you will get achievement and... that is all. I did not find any use for artifacts. Why this items are in game, can they be used somehow? I have no answer. Well. Can I recommend this game? Probably, yes. I must warn you: Hero of the Kingdom II will not hold you for a long time, it is a short easy adventure for a couple of hours, nothing more. Still, it is a decent casual game, that is for sure.

Hero of the Kingdom II is a medieval fantasy adventure game. After your sister got kidnapped by pirates, you set out on the trace of their hideout in order to rescue her while travelling the land and seas and helping people across the kingdom. Pros: This game is exactly like its predecessor: a light straightforward adventure where you walk from location to location, gathering the items, money and resources you need to unlock quests and win fame points to continue on your path. As you do so, the map gradually unveils itself. One change, though, are the skills: there are more of them and they unlock all variety of an item type (many that are gathered on the maps "hidden objects" style) so the quantity of items feels much more massive than my memory of the first game. The setting also is and feels very different than the previous game, and you eventually travel to multiple islands in your quest to fight the pirates and discover the mystery behind their intention. Cons: The game is just as linear as the first one. There is little strategy save the order in which you accomplish quests, which merely require you to have the proper inventory to succeed. The crafting system is way too over complicated, 90% of the things you can combine and exchange for other things and items you'll barely ever need. Enemies and loot never regenerate, save the occasional animal hunting. There is no replay value to this game: if you played it once, you've seen everything the game has to offer. Verdict: ★★★☆☆ - It's up to you This game is so much like its predecessor, in both mechanics, graphics and length, and gets a minor recommendation from me. However, if you didn't like the first Hero of the Kingdom game or were hoping the developers had up the ante, you'll be thoroughly disappointed. ————————————————————————— This was just my opinion. If you found this review helpful, please consider giving it a thumbs up, and feel free to check out more of my (purely opinionated) reviews.

Just like its predecessor, Hero of the Kingdom 2 is a casual point & click adventure, in which you follow a shallow, somewhat childish medieval story of kings, princesses, pirates and treasures. As the cliché goes, your sister gets kidnapped by the evil pirate 'Black Rose', and you set out on a journey to rescue her. The nice thing is - clichés aren't necessarily bad things, and even a story like that serves its purpose very well in a game like this. I usually like my games to challenge me, make me think or otherwise improve myself in order to rise up to dealing with anything the game's AI has in store for me. However, sometimes I feel like I could use the exact opposite type of game, in which all I have to do is go with the flow without having to give it too much effort. Hero of the Kingdom 2 is exactly this kind of game. I found myself clicking through the plot, gathering all sorts of stuff in order to either sell them or use them to craft other, more complex items. There's nothing special about the graphics or the music, which is exactly what I was expecting from a game like this. Just like the story, all it takes is the very basics to preserve the suspension of disbelief required of this light-weight, casual fantasy. Such games kind of feel to me like having a pizza and a bottle of coca-cola for dinner - there's nothing there you really need, except the pleasure and satisfaction you get from it, and that's exactly why I enjoy playing games like HOTK2 from time to time. You can't live on games like that, just like you can't live on pizza and coca-cola, but once in a while, it's the perfect solution. Recommended for anyone with the occasional mood for a casual game.

I love this game so much, and I don't really know why. I suppose it's just so satisfying to pick berries and fish and collect eggs and help people out with their problems.

"I hope to arrive to my death, late, in love and a little drunk." - Atticus Well, if you have enjoyed the first in the series, Hero of the Kingdom, you will most definitely love this one! Hero of the Kingdom II brings back the resource management + hidden object pattern in a new story, in the same setting. This time, the world is way more diverse, with a lot more to explore and accomplish - yet same in means of presenting you casual playtime for an RPG scenario without any rush or action at all. This time, we play the story of a new hero-to-be, who has lost his parents in an earthquake. Our hero and his precious little sister - the only living relative that remains - are taken in by a kindly old fisherman. They live in relative peace for a while, but their grateful solitude comes to an end when a pirate ship attacks the little coastal town and kidnaps the sister! Well, you know the drill this time. We are to take a journey through the known world in hopes of saving that sister. The story takes place sometime after the first game, at the southern part of the same world. There are even some references to our previous hero. Here starts a new zero to hero scenario, full of seafaring, micromanagement and pirates. I must say that the story is a little less generic this time, with a truck load of elaboration. Here is an example of developers learning and improving upon a good structure. The story has some twists, thrill and even some mystery this time, successfully. There will come a point in the game, that you'll actually get worried about what will happen. You can gather some companions from side quests too, and they will serve you in various ways. Well, none of the NPCs are greatly memorable, but the setting still bears the naive beauty of a casual AD&D game session. Well... this is basically the same game, compared to the previous one anyhow. Only with a different scenario and a lot more content. So, what is actually new? Well, there are more skills and collectibles added - more content for the HOG part, to begin with. And quite a many new side quests and ways of building renown too. Some of the side quests are even missable this time. The game makes a little less hand holding and doesn't always declare a point of interest out loud anymore. So, if an NPC mentions something: a place, an item, something to do etc., it would be worthwhile to check that on your own. That is how you will discover treasures. Oh, and considering some point of interests will be active only after you learn about the related skill or knowledge, the game has a truckload of backtracking. You'll find yourself scouring the same 30 or so map pieces again, and again, and again. Is it annoying though? Nah, it is casual and relaxing actually. Because even though everything is limited to same bits of mechanics, the story keeps you interested. You sit before the game to look around for an hour or so, then you find yourself finishing the game 8 hours after. Weird, huh? As I said at the beginning: if you have liked the previous one, you'll love this one anyhow. If you didn't, stay away 'cause it's more of the same. You have no idea? Try the first game, or maybe the free demo version. Then, you can kill an evening or two before this casual RPG story and call it a nice enough experience. Oh, by the way, the third game is already under development, so it might be a good enough time to check the series. Good gaming to you all! Hero of the Kingdom 2 is not a direct sequel to the previous game. Instead we are introduced to a new unnamed protagonist, this time an orphan and his sister who receive shelter from a kindly fisherman. Disaster soon strikes when the young girl is kidnapped during a pirate raid and the very resourceful but youthful protagonist sets off to save her and finds multiple adventures along the way. In many ways Hero of the Kingdom 2 is very obviously a successor to the previous game. The same grinding mechanics and resource management are back. But like any good sequel it does manage to expand on this, with different ways to grind for gold (which means at least when you get bored you have another way to create resources) and further expansion of resting areas and quest types to make the game more interesting and varied than before. The narrative has similarly expanded with a more robust main character who has more character through his dialogue,
although the romance dialogue is rather cringe worthy!
And certainly has more direct involvement and agency in his choice of quests (this time there are more optional quests to do). The narrative is as formulaic as the previous adventure with a similar surprise twist and slow escalation of events. Yet the pattern seems to work and is generic enough to not be terribly camp yet still can't quite capture the appeal of more succesful series. The primary narrative is somewhat convoluted in its process, yet it doesn't slow the pace too much since its the sidequests that will actually absorb most of the time. As a result the quest structures are more convoluted and often have multiple stages that can make them rather long winded. Again this does pad up the gameplay time, but it can become tedious as you jump about the map to collect a rather more expansive list of items than before. This is where the side quests and optional areas at least retain interest, and the game now has an entire underground sewer system to explore and navigate as well as a few additional caves to enter. Resource management is exactly the same as before and still requires the careful balance of energy and gold in the early stages, yet becomes far simpler as you progress to the late game stages. The game does have better staggering of optional items to find, and does encourage you to revisit previous areas as new findable items are made available to you. The skill system related to these seems better implemented this time around, though they could likely expand on it further to add more of an rpg feel to the game. Renown is also introduced as a resource here, and you need to have a certain level of fame before you can complete some of the main quests, which can become frustrating when you are blocked from proceeding with the main questline, but does encourage further exploration of the NPC characters by accepting their quests. Hero of the Kingdom 2 does exactly what a sequel needs to do, retain the aspects that made the game successful and expand on other areas to enhance the overall experience delivering a more comprehensive product. Whilst there are still many areas that require work, such as the simple narratives, and quest designs, as it stands the game is still a fairly solid experience. Recommended for: Anyone who wants a casual gameplay experience with light resource management Not Recommended for: Anyone who is looking for something that doesn’t require grinding.
