  Hello sailors, I've been wondering when this series would wander onto Steam for years now and I'm thrilled that many may have the opportunity to experience it as thousands had 30-40 years ago. These are not an easy-street games, so if you buy it thinking you will have a leisurely time of it, you will be disappointed. That being said, use hint resources to your heart's content and marvel at how convoluted some of the solutions are. I loved these games as a kid and still may be able to beat Beyond Zork without help. The humor and immersion it provides even as text adventures is most enjoyable. I hope you enjoy the unique and mind-stretching challenge that these text adventures offer and explore this wonderful universe that Infocom and Activision created. P.S. Save often. You will be eaten by grues. No question there.

  A game with graphics as good as you can imagine :^) Zork is the only game that made me want to make my own text-adventure styled game, i made a half decent text adventure game using Notepad++ (probably should finish it sometime) If you are not of the patient type or you never manage to get in the mood of imagining and maping the map in your head (maybe even drawing the map on a piece of paper in front of you) then this game would not be something for you. If you are tho, then this game will be one of your best video game experiences you will ever have, it at least was so for me. This Anthology package comes bundled with six Zork games so it is good value too. 10/10

  What to say here. These games (and Infocom text adventures in general) were the games I grew up with. They ran on everything, from the Apple II's and black and white compact Macs in my elementary school to the Palm I had in high school. The anthology includes my favorite story (Planetfall) and the solid adventure of the Zork series, easily something you can lose yourself in for hours. These games are not for all. There are no graphics at all, not even ASCII like Nethack. If you're the type who can get wrapped up in a good book though, these are for you.

  This very Anthology came with our first Packard Bell in 1994. It is exactly how I remember it!! Except this time we have the internet to walk us through instead of fumbling around till the ole lantern runs out of battery. Finally beat 1 for the first time, followed by 2, and now moving on to 3... Recommend for anyone who grew up with the game and/or newcomers alike!! 10/10!!!

  I once had to go to the library and find a book on English poetry to solve one of the puzzles in Zork I. 10/10 - Would go to the library again in the early 80s!

  Having Zork available on Steam is a very good sign fot nostalgic fans of the game everywhere. Seeing as the Anthology collects over 6 versions for Zork, you're in for a treat if you're a fan :)

  Absolute classic, but don't cheat yourself out of an authentic experience. Draw a map, play it over and over until you beat it. The way it was meant to be played.

There is a mailbox here. >[/b] Back in the early 1980s, graphics were primitive. The best story telling was just that -- good writing allowed you to imagine fantasy worlds of fire-breathing dragons, evil trolls, glowing magic swords with mystical runes... and computers that someday will have [b]ONE FREAKING MEGABYTE OF RAM![/b] This is an anthology of several text adventures, and the early works of incorporating a graphical info display to go along with the text. The Zork series are like a tongue-in-cheek fantasy RPG, and Planetfall is SF. You type in text commands to interact with the game world, and get a description of what happens. Think of these as novels as compared with modern First Person games which are more like Pixar movies. Every game should try Zork for the experience -- take advantage of the low price and discount! You get several text adventure games for only a few bucks. This is a great choice as "quarantine food", if you can resist the urge to look at the walkthroughs. Needless to say, the original Zork series pre-dates in-game mapping (the later games generate a map for you as you go along). Having a pad of graph paper and a pencil is a great tool to map the game world -- you're never sure just how big the world is going to be, so drawing 2x3 or so boxes in the center of the paper at the beginning of a level and working outwards is a good strategy. Put a short description of the room's name in the box for reference. Draw a line from the top of a box to indicate leaving the room by going north, a diagonal up-right line indicating leaving by going northeast, "u" for up, etc. Just be aware that the directions don't always match both ways -- if you go north to enter a room, you might [b]not[/b] get back to the original room by going south (this is why pencil helps). And the rooms are not always a set distance apart, so you'll be re-drawing bits a few times. And there are a few places that are designed to confuse mapping and get you lost... can you see where this is heading? You'll eventually have pages filled with maps and notes on rooms -- think of it as an explorer's journal. Sometimes using the text-based interface or stringing a few command words may take getting used to. HINT: To save a game, type "save". You can then resume by typing "restore". If you are still unsure of the whole idea of a text-based interface, several people have listed other commands in the discussion section, I've put together a few hints in the guides section, and you could also search "interactive fiction" online.   I spent hours playing this as a kid and am thrilled that it has come to steam. Zork and text adventure games mark the keystone in the beginning of the golden age of gaming. If you love video games as a form of entertainment, art, and creativity - Zork is for you! Zork is an imaginative interactive puzzle adventure that leads you on a nostalgic trip into the classic eras of gaming. 10/10 the text adventure that kicked it all off.

  If you're looking for a real challenge in gaming, ZORK is it. We're all accustomed to seeing the setting, or having map markers leading the way, or straight forward Skyrim Dungeons, while ZORK is a cryptic puzzle of a dungeon not meant to be easy, or quick. You are given a detailed backstory on the lands you are adventuring, and a basic instruction manual describing how game play works, and that is all. No maps, no signs, no help menu, nothing. It's up to you to figure out the layout, to figure out how to get where, how to defeat enemies, how to solve puzzles, and only using the text given in game, and the commands you input at the prompt, and eventual get all the treasure and points in as few moves as possible. It is super hard, and super fun. Remember: In this day and age we have the internet, so when you truly get stuck (as I have) you can find help in order to keep playing, which has been enormously helpful on occasion - to be able to check my theories and choices against other players has taken the "impossible" factor out of ZORK, but I would suggest using the internet sparingly for the overwhelming joy and satisfaction of figuring it out yourself is ineffable. Also - some major selling points: 1 - You get Six Different Games for Six Dollars. 2 - It takes up hardly any hard drive space compared to almost any other game (The entire anthology only takes up 26MB). 3 - It's easy to play once you get a feel for the interface: just type in your command and hit Enter. 4 - I have already enjoyed 15 hours of this game, and the end is still not in sight for the first adventure. So, whether you're a retro gamer, or just want to try something new, or you work better with words than images or sounds, ZORK is a solid choice for your gaming library.
