This is a great game but the price of $20 is not justified. It doesn't even allow for fullscreen and the only difference is that there aren't any ads. I will still play this but I'm frustrated with the way they handled putting this on steam.

Could use more OG islands. Reality TV island (And no, not that shameless safari version), Astro Knights, Shark Tooth, Spy island. I even miss Mystery Train island because I used most of the Victorian styled clothing. The price is hefty for what it's offering. This should be $10. Being incomplete it just feels wrong to be $20. The Game is not ported at all for PC, just adobe air program to broadcast it to desktop. No options for PC at all. No fullscreen, no wide screen capabilities, no graphics options either. Another issue is there is no option to save log in details. You legit need to log in every single time on launch. It's a lazy attempt at rejuvenating its popularity. I recommend waiting a few months to see if they actually deliver on adding past islands and NOT BEHIND A MEMBERSHIP PAYWALL.

This review will start with some history and background that will help the reader understand certain context. If are you already familiar with Poptropica, its history, and its decline...skip to the third paragraph of the review for commentary on only the Steam version specifically. Poptropica started as a web browser game that people played in the late 2000s, often in their childhoods. The game involves a player you create that goes to different islands in the world of Poptropica, solving whatever problems may be there. Each island was one adventure, kind of like worlds in platformer games. The controls act as a point-and-click adventure despite having many more complex types of gameplay such as platforming present. It worked in its own charming way and made for fun little adventures people of all-ages could enjoy. It wasn't anything too amazing, but it was nice, fun, and charming. The game received new islands and new content such as social features that kept the game alive and growing. However, ever since Adobe Flash's ending in 2021, what the game was previously powered on, the game began a noticeable steep decline in quality more than it already was since 2017 when they temporarily abandoned the game to work on an unnecessary follow-up game known as Poptropica Worlds that understandably shut down after its very mediocre run. The original and main Poptropica game that still exists had plenty of content, over 50 islands. They could've kept the content powered by Flash (including their classic fan favorite islands) alive and accessible through browser extensions such as Supernova, something other Flash games opted to do. Instead, they completely removed them from being accessible through their official website. These things are most likely what caused the game's player-base to die down as much as it has, while remaining and veteran fans alike popularly request to the Poptropica development team to bring back the beloved original islands. Instead, they have only ported their newer, more problematic islands while making some mediocre new ones to date. They also removed things like neat social features and other aspects of the game that gave it its charm. I could go into more detail about this, but that isn't necessary for the sake of this review. That brings us to this specific Steam release of Poptropica released in 2022. The announcement of this game's release gained a good bit more traction than the average Poptropica announcement tweet. This Steam release could've been a chance to revitalise the game and ignite a Poptropica renaissance of sorts if had they continued to advertise it well enough, brought back the beloved fan favorite classic islands, and improved on problematic aspects of other islands. Instead, they chose the worst possible route and made the Steam release painfully mediocre in every possible way, if not downright bad in certain aspects. For one, they mostly only brought back a certain few mediocre and problematic islands without even fixing any of their issues. In some ways, this port is worse than the free website version. I sat through and played every single island this version of the game has to offer, so let's jump right in. For one, the website still receives updates, new content, and daily bonuses while this Steam version doesn't at the time of this review. The island selection they chose to include in the Steam version is a good sample of what's wrong with the modern version of Poptropica while having issues of its own. The island selection they chose is mostly very monotonous to play through, often too ambiguous or tedious to progress through without a walkthrough, with many questionable game design choices (such as every episode island giving you a medal, items not carrying over in between episodes of the same island, animations and plot points that don't make sense etc.). The islands often have a strong concept but mostly a mediocre to bad execution of its ideas in their story and gameplay. The game's soundtrack is mostly mediocre and bland to the point where you're better off just putting on your own music and the movement is a huge downgrade from the classic version of the game (can be janky, and offers less fluid movement). One of the worst parts has got to be bugs that make the game literally unplayable at certain parts, that being the buggy bonus quests. Bonus quests are quests that are offered to play after the completion of the main story of an island for some islands that reward you with an exclusive item. However, almost every bonus quest in the game is bugged in a way where it's unplayable or impossible to complete (either through an NPC that activates progression not being clickable, necessary items arbitrarily missing from where they're supposed to be, and being stuck infinitely loading. It's possible to email the developers about it, but they will only fix the issue on your own account specifically instead of the whole game which is so bizarre. Other than that, lots of little charming things from the original game (such as certain animations, the far better original inventory system, educational fun facts on islands such as Time Tangled, and more) still aren't back yet since being removed from the web version despite having unusable remnants of some of those features (such as the Photo Booth) still present in the game. The Steam version of the game which is supposed to be a paid "premium" experience omits unnecessary things such as memberships and ads, yet still has lots of empty spaces in every island where ads would usually be for some reason which adds to loading times and makes the game unnecessarily longer for nothing. This version of the game is also poorly optimized given it may lag on lower-end devices despite the nature of the game being simple. This game unfortunately also doesn't have a fullscreen option which is upsetting but also makes it more likely to run into issues such as misclicks off the game during gameplay. The best things I can say about the Steam version of the game is that they brought back the beloved customizer feature (albeit limited in usage capability) and that the game uses the previous better interface of returning to islands from Home Island that the web version no longer has. If it's not clear already, the Steam version of this game is absolutely not worth the money and won't have what you're looking for if you're a classic Poptropica fan either. If you wanted to try modern Poptropica with all its issues, you'd be better off playing through their official website for free. The best option and the way to experience the better fan favorite classic islands and the best version of Poptropica available is through a free massive archive of virtually every Flash game known as Flashpoint, and following a tutorial on how to run classic Poptropica on it. I can only hope the game gets better and improves from where it was officially someday, but for now, preservation of its former glory is the best we've got.

Long long ago, from 2008ish to 20016ish I worked for Poptropica and wrote most of the back end for the Realms part of the game, as well as helping out with the gameplay there. I also wrote the 'Friends' back end that is part of the web version of the game. In any case, it's nice to see the game get some new life on Steam. I left the company years ago and have nothing to do with this port to be clear. I see some complaints that it requires you to be online. I can say for sure that it really is necessary as all the game state is stored on the servers. The upside of this is that you can log in with the same character you used to play on the web and see all your progress preserved in this version of the game! (You can thank me later ;) ) The Realms part of the game also stores everything on the server, the worlds you see were built by other players and are loaded up each time you enter that part of the game. $20 is kind of a lot for a port of a game this old, especially when you can access much of this content on the web... but they did convert some content that is not on the web now, and having Realms back is a real treat. Hopefully, this version will generate enough revenue and interest to spur some new development! I had a lot of plans for Realms back in the day and would love to see the current devs build on that foundation.

This is a decent collection of islands, and I'm sure fans will feel very nostalgic to see some of their favorite islands here. However, I'd consider the way they released the game to be disrespectful from a game preservation point' this game is online-only, meaning you can't play it without an internet connection. You can play without making an account, but you are locked out of the Realms game mode until you create an account or sign in. This matters because Poptropica themselves made an offline version of the game in the form of their mobile app. Granted, you had to download the islands, but after that, you could play in the middle of nowhere if you wanted to. There are also fan-made offline versions of both AS2, and AS3 islands out there that, while they lack some of the features of the game, still function well and have all of the islands except the newer ones released with Haxe. Essentially, you are spending a premium for what is essentially a lesser product compared to not only their previous outings but fan-made ports as well. You should only purchase this game if you want to play Realms and have a decent internet connection, or if you feel guilty for using the fan-made port and want to compensate the developers somehow.

I remember when Poptropica only had one page for all the islands. I grew up playing this game and even though it is a kid's game, I still think it by and large holds up as an adult. However, It is quite disheartening that it appears the team no longer has the same passion as they did before they rid all the "old" games off the map. I stopped playing around that time and I had hoped that by now they'd have things figured out. They still seem proud of their work with all the references to past games they make and yet... nothing to show for it. It would be forgivable if they were still keeping up with new islands, which there are some on online, but they really lack the spirit and complexity of the originals. None compare to Steamworks, Skullduggery, or Astroknights for example. They no longer seem to be trying to "push the envelope" I was excited when I heard that they were going to Steam for the older islands and I bought it pretty much right away. Yet, there still hasn't been any word about updates with new (old) islands. It seems to me that the team is being pulled in many directions trying to keep everything up, and things are more complex than pushing a button and BOOM you've got a brand new game... but with as much respect as I have, I hope they can be more open in the future and listen to their fanbase. Until then, I do not recommend this game. It is just disrespectful to keep everyone on their toes for this long, with little to show for it.

There are a few issues I have with this version. For starters, the price is rather high, and the price simply means no Ads, it doesn't include membership status. Not to mention that there are several beloved islands that are missing, such as Mystery Train, Ghost Story, Supervillain Island, and more, while keeping ones like Timmy Failure island and Galactic Hot Dogs. Not to mention the fact it cannot be fullscreen which is more than annoying. Overall it's certainly not worth it now, and while it could be in the future if they added back way more islands (and maybe even the older versions of islands, like the original much more difficult mythology island) and made sure fullscreen worked, as of now in it's current state I definitely suggest waiting and seeing if anything changes.
