I bought Aquarium Designer as well, here is a quick comparison as of August 2022 (both games have regular updates, and Behind Glass is Early Access at the time of writing) Behind Glass: Aquarium Simulator - tank dimensions are customisable, but all rectangular - prettier fish - '2D mode' for watching the tank, zooms in on tank. Option to create tank to match your aspect ratio - bubbles decoration - saltwater tanks - 2 substrate blend - scattering of moss/pebbles option - crabs - more fish choices - size options for fish - fish recolouring tool, a bit tricky to use - more lighting options, spotlighting - different background rooms - fish animations look better, fish have nibbling animations, I think there's some fish behaviour AI. Aquarium Designer - has a short story campaign - tells temperature and ph requirements for fish/plants, these matter in 'Realistic Mode' - In realistic mode, you need to clean the tank - Various tank shapes: tank with rounded front, semi-circle tank - Premade colour variations for appropriate species - lighting in form of "cover with a lamp", lamp hue can be changed - lots more tank decorations, rocks and plants - thermometer and filter accessories for tank Conclusion: Behind Glass is prettier, Aquarium Designer has better gameplay.

Is this as good as a real aquarium? Nope. It's better. I got into the aquarium hobby in a big way in my early 30s. I spent over twenty years creating and maintaining dozens of different tanks. Freshwater tropical, African cichlid, fish-only saltwater, mini-reefs, micro-reefs, even a Texas native tank. I've pretty well tried everything in the hobby. I possess the experiential equivalent of a master's degree in marine biology and I know more about water chemistry than the average MUD engineer. And I will never own another aquarium, because they are a gigantic pain the rear. When you set up an aquarium, you are essentially trying to recreate a dynamic biological environment in a very small box. Even large 75+ gallon tanks are tiny compared to the smallest pond. When you start getting into things like micro-reefs, the difficulty and maintenance requirements increase geometrically. The earth's ocean (there's really only one ocean) is the largest self-regulating biome in the known universe. Its sheer size creates filtering and balancing factors that are incredibly difficult -- and expensive -- to simulate in a small closed environment. Let me give you an example. One of the most gorgeous fish in the world is the Mandarin Dragonet. It is also very difficult to keep alive. They will not accept prepared food. Oh, I've heard people claim they've managed to get a Dragonet to accept prepared food; those people are liars. The Dragonet will only eat live oceanic isopods. Those are near-microscopic crustaceans that grow naturally in reef environments. The problem is that one little Dragonet (they're only about 2" long on average) will eat a prodigious quantity of isopods. I put my first one in a 29 gallon micro-reef. He starved in a few months. So I put one in a 55 gallon mini-reef. He ate all the isopods and starved in a bit over a year. My hypothesis is that you would need something like a 250 gallon reef to have a chance of sustaining an isopod breeding cycle that would stay ahead of even ONE Dragonet, never mind a breeding pair. You don't even want to know how much money you would have to spend on live sand and live rock to create a reef that big. (Hint: it's in the low five figures range.) I run this program in 4K HDR on a 43" monitor. The grand total I spent for my computer set up is less than two thousand dollars. It looks like a real micro-reef and I created it in an hour. I can plop a couple of Mandarin Dragonets in it and they won't starve. Ever. I can overload it with corals and anemones. They will thrive forever. I'll never own another real tank, but what I am seriously considering is setting up a separate Steam account, buying a 55" HDR television and a small computer with a high-end GPU and putting a virtual tank on the wall of my living room. For less than two thousand dollars I can create an infinite variety of tanks that I can change every day and fill with an infinite number of hybrids. I would be hard pressed to build a single 55 gallon mini-reef for that amount of money. This is the best fish tank ever.

I am the Taiwanese Player, and I really love this game, the fish and creature looks really lively and they look great interacting with the rock and plants and everything inside the tank. thought there is still something that I think it can do better(Like the Arowana, its active still looks a little stiff.)but this is still a great works. I hope this game can add more strange species, like bichir, Australia lungfish, alligator gar something that it is hard to feed in real life. Please forgive my poor English /OWO/. P.S. Please add bichir one day ,I reaally love this kind of fish! If there is anything I can do to make this game better, please let me know, thank you.

Exactly the kind of aquarium game I have been hoping for for years! As of right now, this is a no-frills aquarium/aquascaping sandbox for both fresh and saltwater tanks. There are no objectives, goals, etc. You build what you want, how you want, when you want. You don't have to unlock anything. I love that aspect of it. It's not a hardcore aquarium sim in that you don't have to constantly "maintain" the aquariums, like water conditions, temp, etc. For someone that has little available gaming time, I love the open sandbox aspect, granted some folks might easily get bored. The game is absolutely gorgeous with very realistic fish textures and animations. I don't know enough about aquariums to say that the fish AI behavior is realistic though (schooling, etc.) One neat thing is that the fish chase each other around the aquarium kicking up puffs of sand and that's always fun to watch. There's setting to where the larger fish can eat the smaller ones, but it's not gory or anything like that. What I find was a really cool detail is that when the fish brush up against the plants, the plants move out of the way instead of clipping right through them. there's also a breeding system where you can combine different species of fish and come up with some really neat custom species... for example, make a goldfish that has the coloration patterns of a piranha. So that's fun to mess with, although it's not super realistic. Even at Early Access, there are a TON of real-world fish species available. There's good variety of aquarium decorations, but the selection could be better, though objects like rocks/plants have different variants/shapes. Currently there are no mechanical objects like filters/scrubbers, heaters, etc. Again, you don't have to actually maintain the aquariums but it would be nice to have some of those objects even if they were just for show. Object Placement is fairly easy once you get the hang of how the interface works. One of the most awesome features of the game is that during building there is a scatter tool that allows you to "paint" things such as various short grasses, small plants moss, pebbles, etc which is fantastic for "filling out" the aquascapes. Basic texturing the substrate/sand is done in a paintbrush fashion. You can also "paint" the height of the substrate/sand etc, so it's not flat. There are lighting, backdrop, scene options as well. When you add fish, most of the decor disappears so that it's easier to find and remove smaller fish in larger aquariums, so that is very handy. There are both 2D and 3D modes... the 3D view allws you to "spin" the aquarium around to see every side. The 2D view is more like a full-screen screensaver. Things I would like to see improved include are the sound effects. The bubbles are a bit too loud, and when the fish chase each other, you hear kind of a generic water splashing sound, which seems a little over the top... minor issues though. I would like to see an aging and brooding system. As far as I can tell, the fish currently do not age or mate. Although you can fake it by changing the size of the fish or using the current breeding system which just allows you to combine different species and save them. It would be fun to see that your fish have laid eggs. Currently the fish aren't divided between male or female. I know the devs are working on more tank decorations, so I'm anxious to see what they come up with. Also if there's ever workshop support for user-created content, that would just explode the potential of what you can create. It would be nice to see different tank shapes. Currently there are only rectangular tanks available, although you can resize them to a max of (I think) 300 gallons. As it stands now, when you create a new tank you can customize the width, height and depth, but I'd like to have the option of other common tank shapes like bow-front, corner, cylindrical or hexagonal. It would also be awesome to be able to make a vivarium by being able to set the water level and adding some amphibious creatures like turtles or frogs. This is kind of a dumb nitpicky opinion but there's a species of sucker catfish/pleco in the game. It cruises around the bottom of the tank eating algae and such but it doesn't actually cling to the side of the glass like real life ones tend to do. All in all, for early access, in the current development stage as it is now, this game is fantastic. I Highly recommend this game for aquarium enthusiasts who just want to build whatever they want without the burden of unlocks and achievements. I'm really hoping that the game continues development because it's really got a ton of potential. Solid 8 out of 10 stars for my review.

Very short playtime but what is listed as an acropora is actually a montipora. Not gonna leave a negative review based on that, just wanted to point that out. Would love to see more species of fish and coral added though. Seems like a game I'd enjoy

I was debating getting this game or aquarium designer, I much prefer this game. Edit: I think the only thing this game is worse at is fish selection. However, the Devs have said more fish will come. Overall you can go into much more detail. It doesn't have a campaign like aquarium designer, but I think a aquarium game doesn't need a campaign.

I have been an aquarium enthusiast all my life and love all kinds of fish, from common goldfish to the more exotic betta. I have only played a short time, but played enough to know this is one of the most realistic fish-tank simulators I have ever come across. Most of the games I have played in the past, were quite cartoonish in graphics, and you have to complete tasks and quests to advance to other tanks and fish, which makes it seem more like a job No so with Behind Glass. You are given all fish, tanks and decorations/scenery upfront. And the Devs are constantly adding more content, and the fish are so amazingly life-like and behave much like their real-life counterparts. If you have always wanted a large tank filled with all kinds of fish to enjoy, but didn't have the money or space (like me), Behind Glass is indeed the next best thing

Still looking for an aquarium simulator that actually simulates. Being able to cross breed piranhas and neon tetras is novel I suppose, but not what I'm looking for. It would be nice if the fish AI mimicked real life behavior. Fish just sort of move around, regardless of breed or other fish in the tank. Angel fish should be aggressive, neon tetras should be skiddish and group together, Oscars should have some personality, etc. There's no "game" here, just tanks to mess around with. If you want an interactive screensaver, check it out. If you want a game, wait a few years to see how Early Access pans out.
