Despite the novelty of the fear mechanic, this just isn't a good DLC. You introduce this really fun game mode with Jack the ripper but you only play as him twice for maybe 5 minutes tops. instead you're spending the entire DLC as evie. The DLC is also very buggy. the base game didn't have any crashes, here it was a 50/50 chance the game would just crash at the end of a mission. also the citizen Ai somehow failed entirely with random civilians floating 30ft in the air. TLDR: Novelty of fear and Jack doesn't outweigh the fact its buggy and unfun

A highly uninspired DLC, especially compared to the main game. Jack the Ripper seems like a wonderful premise that would almost write itself, but story wise it was butchered. Instead of Jack being this phantom-like figure who is elusive even for an assassin and brings terror to London he is a gang leader with a completely cookie cutter back story. Oh my past makes me disgruntled and so I kill people because I have gone insane. Whomever wrote it completely misunderstands what makes Jack the Ripper interesting. In the eyes of these writers he is a gang leader, has followers, budyguards and luitenants...what? He acts more like Al Capone than Jack, the difference is Al Capone was not mysterious. How can you have a full criminal organization underneath you, but the police has no lead on you? It's like Evie is the first one to think "oh hey, since so many people know who Jack is because they work for him, maybe start by interrogating one of them? Utter nonsense. Oh and his identity is revealed basically after the second mission. In fact it was so early that I kept expecting some plot twist like maybe Jack turning out to be an alter ego for Jacob who had gone mad, but no, it's some orphaned kid that the assassins raised as one of them. Why do the Rooks now follow him instead of Jacob? Don't know. Why is he now so good that even Jacob can't touch him? Don't know. Aside from that Evie is also butchered as a character. She was quick-witted, snarky and likeable in the original game, but here she's this bitter, tired and bland charater. I guess the marriage to Mr. Green did not turn otu that well, but overall she seems like she is about to just give up on life the universe and everythnig at every step of her journey. Mechanically the fear mechanic is kind of ok but in essense it's really nothing different than a sleep dart/gas. To be fair, people are reporting bugs and crashes, which I have not encountered os it is a pretty solid game technically speaking. It's not impossible to enjoy this. But after the original and the subject matter of this DLC one's expectations would naturally be high and this just not live up to any of it. If you go into it, expecting just a lengthy side mission, without a narrative element you'll probably be ok with it. On the other hand if you never get nito it, you would be missing pretty much nothing of value.

The Jack DLC is an interesting, sometimes compelling piece of storytelling, ruined by an awful final encounter. First, the good stuff. It's 1888, twenty years after the events of Syndicate. Jacob has disappeared while trying to stop Jack the Ripper, someone clearly known to him. A few months later, Evie returns from India, and with the help of Inspector Aberline, begins investigating the murders. Much of the investigations involve piecing together the Ripper murders, locating evidence with your eagle vision, and slowly assembling a timeline of the victims' final moments. This is all a lot of fun, much like the crime scene investigations from Batman Arkham Origins. Then there are the missions involving the prostitutes of Whitechapel, Jack's chosen targets. This game treats these women as human beings, not the cardboard cutouts of most NPCs in the AC games. You are made to consider their feelings, and it's cleat that the writers wanted to make sure this was not simply another AC killing fest. An interesting design decision was to turn the Rooks against Evie, making the streets a dangerous place for her, even if she's not sure why. Combat-wise, they've added terror. A new type of bomb strikes terror into enemies, making them hesitate, or even panic and run. Of course, your normal attacks, always rather fierce in Syndicate, now generate that same fear, and several new attacks and skills are built around increasing fear duration and range. It works, most of the time, though I felt that the new combat felt more like brawling than skilled killing. The story moves along at a steady pace, and is entirely enjoyable... until the final encounter with Jack himself. Imagine my utter lack of surprise when I discovered that the greatest enemy is not Jack the Ripper, but the camera! Assassin's Creed has always had trouble with its camera in enclosed spaces. Naturally, the devs set the final battle in a cramped basement. Even if the camera itself were not an issue, you'll spend several minutes running round and round in circles, trying to get the jump on someone who can see you... because it's a small basement! It's an exercise in frustration that I eventually walked away from. Without spoiling the encounter, I'll say that as a story piece it made little sense beyond its location. Add to that the awful difficulties of the camera, and really, it's a wonder that this encounter survived the first prototype before some dev spoke up and said "we should move this into the streets, or at least upstairs. I am reminded of Assassin's Creed III, where the devs swore up and down that they'd listened to the fans, and were acutely aware of the hatred of chase missions... so then went ahead and added several particularly brutal chases that were actually worse than the previous games. In the end, this DLC is worth playing. The story is interesting, the new mission types are fun, and the overall setting, in which all that the Frye twins have built is turned against them is a fascinating ending to their story. If it weren't for the awful final encounter, I doubt I'd have anything bad to say at all, other than some quibbles about the combat. So go ahead and buy the season's pass, and enjoy this interesting bit of storytelling. Just try not to get too frustrated by Victorian London's greatest villain, the dev who designed the final encounter!

Assassin's Creed Syndicate was a definite improvement on the last entry in the series. (I don't really wanna talk about that borefest of a game with more bugs than that one scene from Peter Jackson's King Kong, so im going to leave it as that). Granted, the game itself still has a lot of bugs. Even with a GTX 970, im still getting a few freezes and crashes, but again, they are few and far between. However, this DLC is worth getting. I would recommend getting it on sale, however, the story is way more interesting than the main game itself. Jack the Ripper's levels are amazing and by themselves sell the whole DLC for me, and by the time the DLC ended, I really wanted more. The use of fear tactics, with the dark tone of the story only complement the experience and are a welcome addition to the series, and I hope these make a return soon. With this DLC, I see that Ubisoft has the ability to revive the series almost like Black Flag did. And I hope that the next AC game follows up with the same level of creativity shown in the gameplay and the story of this DLC. **And fewer bugs!** Pros + Awesome Gameplay + Great Story + Jack the Ripper's Levels + Use of Fear Tactics Cons - Not Enough Jack the Ripper Levels

This pack brings some of the most interesting parts and ideas of Assassin's Creed Syndicate. It obviously plays very similar to the base game. However, the new fear mechanic is fun to play around with. The mechanic allows you to frighten enemies into simply fleeing or turning on one another, which can make for some interesting gameplay dynamics. The Jack the Ripper scenes also feel as though they play far differently from the Evie Frye scenes, as the game encourages you to slice and dice instead of disable and intimidate. However, the same control flaws that plague the base game are of course still here, and hitting the right target when there are knocked down opponents and unaware enemies can be extremely frustrating. Some city takeover activities return, along with some new ones. Some of them work well and offer some interesting ideas of their own (the first or second time around), while some of them are clearly just filler content to make the content last longer. It's short and the playable areas are considerably smaller than the base game, with most of the game focused around the areas where the Ripper murders took place in Whitechapel. The story isn't brilliantly presented, but it manages to play creatively with the source material without being too stupid, which pretty much sums up most of the Assassin's Creed historical plotlines to begin with anyway. The voice acting is at the same standard as the base game, and the new themes on the soundtrack reflect the mood the DLC is trying to pull of really well. The visual style is also somewhat more different, with darker colours and heavier fog present, which again works for this DLC quite nicely. If you own Syndicate and enjoyed playing it, then I can recommend this pack, but due to its short length, I would consider holding off until it is discounted, as it doesn't offer too much extra gameplay time. It is the largest of the DLC packs available for Syndicate, and probably the only one really worth owning.
Likes
- Introduction of the fear mechanic - Shifting POV - Different area activities - The change in the cities - The storyline
Dislikes
- The storyline - The short playtime tl;dr I would recommend to buy it if you want to see more of the twins and what they have been up to. As well as the power of inflicting fear into people's heart. (Wait for a sale if you can be patient, shrugs) Fear Mechanic I would recommend buying this DLC for a look at how the game mechanics had evolved and to see more Frye twins obviously. Forget about assassinating and striking (metaphorical) fear from the shadows. Now, it is possible to strike fear in broad daylight and have the enemies run away in terror. It makes for really quick clearing of big groups of enemies. (+ there is a thrill of power in the ability to scare people away) Shifting POV Furthermore, the ability to play as Jack the Ripper marks the difference between the people involved in the DLC. An example, as Jack, it is possible to kill civilians without any issue. The game doesn't warn the player off, rather it acknowledges and presents a message that says something along the line of 'it does not hinder Jack's plan'. In Jack's pov, the game does not also let the player forget that they are in his shoes and the bgm changes accordingly. Different area activities Do you like helping people? Well, there is now a whole bunch of modified activities. While they aren't completely new, it is different from the usual Bounty Hunt, Child Labor rescue, Templar stronghold etc. It is mainly a positive because after rescuing all of the Boroughs in the main game, I was all up for a change in the activities. There are also more varieties as compared to the base game. The change in the city The streets has become emptier due to the terror that is Jack the Ripper and it is reflected. I had hope to grab a ride but was forced to travel by roofs/foot because there weren't much traffic. Also there were instances of NPCs beating each other up and that seems like a good reflection of a fearful city. Storyline It is under both like and dislike because it was nice to see Frederick beginning to question working with the Frye twins. Finally realising that no matter how well they intend, they are still outside of the law that he is governing. The way they contained the game to two cities that held a lot of place in the base game was a nice touch. As for dislike, it is mainly for Evie's role in the story. As well as the function that they had regarding females for this DLC. (However, I wouldn't be expanding on that, this review is long enough) The story also would have worked better if it did not felt as rushed. It certainly feel that the story would have benefitted with a few more hours of play. Short playtime As mentioned earlier, the story would work better with a few more hours of play. I think the whole DLC took less than half a day for me. That is including doing some activities and the DLC storyline. The pacing of the DLC also seems odd because activities were still getting unlocked about halfway/ four-fifths of the DLC storyline. Which needed me to go back to Whitechapel, even though I cleared it earlier. PS: ( I do not quite understand the need to go through the menu twice to access the DLC though?)
