A continuation of the horror maze-games Chilla’s Art has been pumping out. This one raises the bar a bit. It feels more like a game than the previous installments. At least one with a more conventional sense of direction behind it. And puzzles that are more about opening up your avenues rather than being glorified set collections. Don’t get me wrong though -- you’re still hugging hallways and rummaging through identical furniture assets for clues like before. It ends up being a game that loses some of that raw, unfiltered quality. In return, it gains some “playability” -- a word that feels right to use, even though it’s doing both Aka Manto and Yuki Onna some disservice. Anyway, the net effect is that it sort of elevates the novelty of it into something more substantial. I mean, it’s got some Resident Evil and Fatal Frame in there now. It’s not necessarily a better experience for it. Just one that lowers the stakes and the horror, in order to be more patallable as a game with a clear beginning and a reachable end.

I've just completed Onryo for the first time, and also managed to get ending 2 (which I believe is the full ending or the better ending) plus seven out of the nine possible achievements, and had an absolute blast doing it. Onryo is a first person survival horror with combat and puzzle elements, based in a dark, haunted Japanese house, and whilst it doesn't have a linear layout, parts of the house are locked off until you find the right keys or tools to open up more of the rooms. The house oozes atmosphere, and whilst the corridors look very similar, some of the rooms are quite varied in their contents. Your only weapon against enemies is your mystic camera which damages the ghost when you take a picture of them. It's clearly inspired by Project Zero (Fatal Frame) and it even says you're using type 07 film in the camera's HUD, which is the base type of film in that series. You have unlimited film, but each shot takes away some of your health, but you can regain your health every time you step into a save room, even if you choose not to save your game. Enemies are mostly translucent ghosts, but some patrol the house and can't be harmed (so you need to run and break line of sight) and some can be exorcised by your camera. You'll know when you're in combat as the doors to the room will shut and ominous music will start playing. Ghosts will always materialise behind you (signalled by a hiss) and you can only damage the ghost when it turns red, right before it hits you. This is incredibly frustrating at first, as your camera has a delay before you can take a shot after readying the lens, so the trick is to keep moving in a circle and as soon as you hear the hiss, turn around and ready your shot. Once you nail this, combat is very satisfying even if it is straightforward. Puzzles are quite simple, and mostly involve finding an obvious item to get past an obstacle, but finding the items themselves can be a bit tricky. Sometimes the prompt for the item's location can be seen clearly from across the room, but others need a good thorough searching through drawers to see them. In terms of a plot, there is one, but it's not clear at first - you piece together the story across ten numbered files which paints a picture of what happened to the family who lived at the house. All in all, the game is very easy once you get the hang of the mechanics (particularly combat), as you always regain your health when you enter a save room, and you can save an unlimited number of times without consequence. I'd love it if this game had a hard mode which gave a "true" ending or additional reward at the end, but nevertheless this was a really fun few hours of my life, and one of the better Chilla's Art games.

Maybe me and my cute little friendo @Flexus were not desciplined enough for the game, but we had not much fun with it, as you can see on my playtime. We went into the first hurde, been stuck with different ghost, her in the hallway and me in one room being locked in it. We couldn`t manage to kill them or whatever we were suppose to do. I tried many times to take photos of my ghost, because it was our only "weapon" so far, but I couldn`t manage to do anything. I was running around the room like ring around the rosie but it annoyed us so hard, so we stopped playing and deinstalled the game. Every other game so far we loved from Chilla`s art, but this one isn`t really ours. Maybe if the game gives some hints/tipps or some explanations, we have had a better experience but so far I stay with this review. Thank you. But still: Get Goo Goo Alu! 1/10

Coarse mixture of Dreadout, Fatal Frame, DeadbyDaylight survival style exploration. Despite a small map of a two storey (additional third storey safehouse) old Japanese estate, tight corridors and dozens of rooms, brilliant Dark atmosphere, effects and ambiance, intense maze of Cat and Mouse, Unlike the usual Chilla easy and simple, interactive Find Objects game, very much harder, coupled with Corridor Patrols of invincible beings (Run), rooms that repeatedly generates two sisters (Camera fights). Collect notes, interactive items to solve the puzzles. Much flaws in the game, Skyrocketing fps. Unable to configure keybinds. Options choices haywires (sound)/ Corridor runs can get messy with poor mouse sensitivity, turned and run into wall while being chased. Sister fights can get rather tough due to repetitive, tight timing to retaliate, as you move to avoid being hit, yet must turn and focus aim the camera. Fortunately there is a Save system. Tough Puzzling Scared and Frightened moments. Had a good experience tho.

I am a big fan of those "trending" Chilla's Art games like The Convenience Store or The Closing Shift and I knew that this one was about to be different so I really tried to not compare them too much. I am glad that the developer(s) are trying to be creative and just try out different types of creating those feeling of horror or being unease. I think they already found a style that most people enjoy but what's wrong with trying something different. But even tho it made me want to try it I couldn't really warm up to it. It's not like I wouldn't try to finish it but I am too confused to go on. Somethings just flash up in japanese without any transaltion, I have no clue what to do and then I am stuck. I seached for help in the forums but in game I can't go on and I don't know what I am doing wrong, lol. So early in the game it's kinda frustrating. But - the game doesn't cost much and I am sure it could be better if you don't have the same problems than I do. So I would still recommend to try it yourself, even tho it is a bad expirience for me. Maybe I will give it another try if my motivation is high enough.

Not fun at all, very boring, wouldn't recommend unless u like to walk around and collect stuff while being chased by ghosts in a creepy and tight environment. 1/10

Maybe I had high expectations, but I don't feel quite right about ONRYO. The first ghost I met looked pretty glitchy: she was crawling in place as if she was stuck in something and that made it kind of clumsy to shoot at her with the camera. Eventually, I made it to exorcise her but time 2 minutes and I'm trapped once more in the same room I was exploring, with the same ghost. Again, the animation of the ghost was pretty bad. Generally speaking, the ghosts don't add up to the sense of dread I was looking for. In my opinion, they should try to stick with the gameplay of their former games such as The Convenience Store and The Inunaki Tunnel: in those two games, the fear was more subtle and it built up as the story progressed. To be honest, ONRYO feels just like another Yuki Onna but without the ps1 style graphics. I won't ask a refund of the game because, in overall, I quite like what Chilla's Art has delivered and I believe they can do much better than this.

There's SO much potential here but come on Chilla's Art, you're better than this. Hopefully, they patch this game and make this review irrelevant because I want to like this game, I really do, but how the game is currently, it just feels like a mess. -Being able to see the ghosts, at any time makes them a lot less frightening than if you could only see them through the camera (Fatal Frame? Never heard of it, also we're First-Person View and therefore totally different from that thing we've never heard of) -Ghosts are more of an obnoxious encounter than a terrifying one -Obtuse Puzzle solving with obnoxious, ever-present reminder of current objective -Ghosts' animations are awkward and make you wonder "Are they going through this door because they're a ghost or because they're clipping through it?" -Many objects in the game don't have collision Again, I want his review to eventually become completely outdated because I can see the potential in this game but as it stands right now, it's just not good.

I tried my best I think lol!! or maybe i just suck/ have bad luck but here ya go. https://youtu.be/zevnYcYAsEU The game isn't what I expected but is pretty interesting. I wish it had some type of instruction or directions explaining what to do in the game, the house is really big, so I think a map it would be helpful for navigating for sure. I'm not sure if the ghost that appear are suppose to move like that but shooting them with the cam prove to be difficult at some times. also not sure if it intentional or not but staying in a room after defeating a ghost sometimes another on appears and traps you again. other than a few possible bugs I still had some fun with it.
