A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of fantasy novels by American writer and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing this series in 1991. Originally conceived as a trilogy, it has now grown to five published volumes, and two more are in the draft. The author also wrote story-prequels and a series of stories, representing excerpts from the main novels of the series. One such tale, “Dragon Blood”, was awarded the Hugo Prize. The first three novels of the series were awarded the Locus award for the best fantasy novel in 1997, 1999 and 2001, respectively.

As of April 2015, total sales of A Song of Ice and Fire series books worldwide have exceeded 60 million copies, they have been translated into 45 languages. The fourth and fifth volumes reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list.

The growing popularity of the series A Song of Ice and Fire led to the fact that the HBO television company acquired the rights to the screen version and began to create a television adaptation. There are also popular board and role-playing games, collections of artwork based on books. French computer game developer Cyanide has signed a deal with Martin to create a series of games based on the A Song of Ice and Fire cycle; September 29, 2011 the release of the first of them, the strategic Game of Thrones: The Beginning, created based on the series, was held, and on May 15, 2012, an RPG game called “Game of Thrones” was released.
