About the Game

Congratulations! You’ve just been hired to work the night shift! You’ll be all by yourself, we trust you can handle it…

You’ll be grilling patties, operating deep fryers, and pouring drinks at our quiet restaurant on the edge of town. The customers sure do love the menu; they can’t get enough of the Happy’s Deluxe, Fantastic Fowl, and Poppin’ Pork sandwiches. The fries and salmon nugs are also a big hit. I hear rumors of Happy-Dogs and desserts in the near future, too!

When each customer makes an order, it’s up to you to make a plan and execute it well. If you give customers the wrong order, or take too long, it’ll count as an infraction. If you get three of those infractions, well... let’s just say Happy the Humble Heifer isn’t as joyful when the customers are upset. DO NOT UPSET HAPPY. TRUST US.

But hey, you’ll do fine! Just as long as you don’t upset Happy, you’ll do great! We believe in you!

  • State of the art restaurant management simulation! Cook food, fill drinks, and serve customers!

  • Upgrade your restaurant to make your job even easier!

  • Chaotic Restaurant Event System - put out fires, take out the trash, get those rats!

EDIT: Developers have responded and clarified that a game mechanic, "the dynamic scare system", was set too high. I have not had a chance to see for myself how much this changes things, but I may give the game another shot now. Those who are interested in the game should bear this in mind before reading this review, as it sounds like the developers are listening and adjusting things based on community feedback. If you are considering purchasing the game, please understand this review may well not reflect the current state of the game and my recommendation may be changed in the future, depending on various factors. Thank you for all the positive feedback and the awards. Original review follows: What happened to the slow burn build-up that was present in the alpha? (minor spoilers) In the alpha, this game showed huge promise. It was a relatively normal workday and you went to work, served some customers, then went home. Sure, things seemed a little strange and you had a suspicion in the back of your head that something was wrong, but it wasn't anything concrete. The animals were a little weird and crazy looking, but they were just statues... Then strange stuff started happening... slowly. You slowly became aware of just how messed up everything was and the terror started to build in you. In this... (final?) release... that's all gone. Now
you've got glowing eyed men just randomly standing around and bursting into toxic gas from the very first time you set foot in the restaurant. You've got an intro video that basically tells you you're being mind controlled. You've got appliances and lights randomly flipping on and off like a horror movie. You've got those same glowing eyed men dashing around actively attacking you... On. The. First. Day.
What in the world happened? It's like the developer was so worried people weren't going to be interested that they just added and added elements until it was no longer a slow-burn horror, but "action packed" from the start. Sorry, that's not what drew me in with the alpha. Gonna have to refund this, because it's not the game I thought it was going to be. As is, the alpha is actually a better game IMO. It's certainly much better at horror. ...Seriously, what happened?!?

A fast food simulator that tries to recreate the hell you feel while working at a real fast food restaurant. Still doesn't come close to the true suffering of real life. This should be a mandatory training game for all new employees. Dev's need to add some Karens into the game, so my pain can truly be fulfilled.

If you are just playing through the in-game story and nothing else, then you're doing it wrong. Read this review. Most players will play through the story and call it a day, so I will let those players review that Story Mode aspect of the game in their own reviews. Though the story is fun, it's not what makes this game special. For me, the appeal of the game is allowing yourself to sink into and be immersed in the living and breathing game world and not fight to escape it. I had an absolute blast waking up, exploring, unlocking locations, making money by working shifts at the restaurant, upgrading and decorating my apartment, sitting on the couch watching awesome shows on my flatscreen TV, hanging out at the Jazzy Java Joint for a cup of coffee, and just living it out in the city. Once you understand this and immerse yourself, you'll realize that the main storyline was just an extra side mission and the real game is everything besides it, not the other way around. The Feel: This game feels like I'm playing one of those Flash RPGs from the 2000s (Stick RPG) or like living in the world of Invader Zim. The gritty, eerie, dark, and urban art from that era usually emphasized by the inevitable cannabis joint in there somewhere. You know which ones. Your reality in this game is hopeless nihilistic dread. In 3D. You get to take part in it. The world feels alive and with depth through absolutely random and sordid radio stations, a live jazz band playing (literally live because they're playing a randomly generated track every time), a full on city to explore, and customers to keep Happy away. The Concept: It is a sarcastic take on reality, calling living animals to be slaughtered in a barn the "Barnyard Buds" that have their living counterparts made into the seemingly staple "Happy Deluxe" burgers. And let's not forget about the ordinary looking vending machines that suddenly speak in Japanese and play a little jingle which sell you, and of course it had to be in this urban hell simulator: scratch-off tickets. The worldbuilding is top notch and is greatly enhanced by physical in-world radios and TVs that can put out full-fleshed out GTA quality zany programs, stations, interviews, and Adult Swim-like ads. 15 hours in and I still have not seen them all. My first Obscura Programming portable radio, unfortunately, was lost to an exploding zombie and that loss is when I realized how much I had actually enjoyed listening to it. There's even an entire theatrical exhibit of a fictional solar system with a visual and auditory narration of the history of each one of those planets. It serves no purpose in the game's progression, it's just there to make the game world all the more believable and it succeeds at it. The overarching story and history are not in one location, you gradually and coincidentally have to piece it all together. For example, there's a TV show about nuclear bombs, the presenter goes off script commenting about how much money they're spending on them, the consequences, and is shocked by the amount of them. Then in another location you can find out that the Scythian one world government was created to put an end to the nuclear tests. You can then tie this in to other events in the game and that's when it hits you and you go "OH! Wow! Holy shit is this related to THAT? So THAT's how it happened!?" They put their hearts and minds in this ordinarily tertiary stuff. It's like that fully modeled outhouse in IL-2. Incredible. There's even a whole radio interview with a strongman Ronaldo who was attacked by a slasher with Ronaldo giving his own strongman story of what happened that night from his perspective. Then there are the hidden gems and gimmicks that a AAA dev/publisher would consider a waste of resources. Throughout your playthrough, you MAY find out why it's called a Poppin' Pork Patty. You can discover and piece together what happened to your coworker. Even in-game adderall that allows you to hear funny workplace announcements. The entire game feels like, or really is, a surreal dark urban reality fever dream taped on VHS while you're trapped in the Clockwork Orange brainwashing threater. Necessary Requests: - We need a Simulation Mode that only contains the city and the restaurant. I want to keep playing the game after I finish the storyline. Currently you can only play on Endless Mode which locks you in the restaurant on a forever-shift and does not allow you to explore the game. Even the Story Mode is not paced in a way that allows you to slowly explore through the world. I need to wake up, grab a coffee, go to work, make money, come back, shop around at the strip mall, explore the city, and then go back to my apartment, sit in my couch, open up a demon can, and trip balls watching TV. Then repeat it the next day again, buy more stuff, decorate and upgrade my apartment, discover more hidden treasures and rooms, and keep going. Like playing GTA without doing storymode. Hell, I'll buy this gamemode if it becomes an option. I already know Blake will be on board with this, I saw how he played the game in the dev stream and I could tell. He can framework this idea and flesh it out more. - You need to allow for the radio track to persist through an area change loading screen. I missed the ending of one long interview about a workplace whisteblower reporting an issue scrubbing floors or something. In any case, thanks for this awesome experience, Scythe and tinyBuild. Wonderful creation.

A cool game overall, but could still use some polish. You play as a fastfood wageslave working the graveyard shift in a haunted burger joint. Screw up three times, and the monstrous mascots chase you around. The game has some good scares, but more impressive than that is the sense of pressure felt when running around the kitchen, trying to make complicated orders in a short amount of time while mandatory side objectives, creepy ghosts and equipment malfunctions try to sidetrack you. Idk if this game is meant to be a critique of late-stage capitalism, but it seems that way, as you frantically work like your life depends on it, because it quite literally does. The plot is interesting as well, as you run around, unraveling the mystery of the burger joint, and creating homemade gadgets to help subvert the trap you're in. Without spoiling anything, I liked the way the devs recycled old build materials of their game and made it canon for the plot. As for criticisms, I have three: First, at the time of this writing, the backpack feature seems glitchy and could use some fine-tuning. Second, there are a large number of collectible pages you can find in-game, which get posted on your bathroom wall back at the apartment, but they're very difficult to view easily; many of the pages are not eye-level with your FPS POV, so its difficult to make out what many of them say; I would advise these pages simply getting added to the in-game worker's manual for up-close viewing, instead. Third, the main plot's length is very short. I beat this with a total of probably 7 hours of gameplay. Its a very fun game, so the short length seems relatively unsatisfying. I get the impression that if you ignore the main plot and just keep working your shifts, the game will last indefinitely, which isn't a problem, but I really would have loved to see a deeper and/or more intricate main plot, with NPCs, clues, etc., to draw out the suspense. Additionally, at the time of this writing, there is no multiplayer functionality, but I feel like that would be a natural expansion to gameplay, with a crew of ~4 players all working the kitchen together to get out the orders. Overall, I give this game a 7.5 out of 10 and well worth the $20 it costs on steam.
Intro:
I waited for over a year in anticipation for this game. I played Happy's Humble Burger Barn a long time ago and while I loved the idea I felt it had some issues in execution. When I found out that the developers were planning on making a sequel I was beyond interested because it seemed like they were passionate about it and beyond that inspired to make something larger.
Gameplay:
Happy's Humble Burger Farm (HHBF) has you working at the absolutely normal fast food joint down the road. The game will start you out in your apartment which is a great hint to the player that this is going to be more than just burgers and fries. As you leave and arrive at work for your first day you are introduced to some optional tasks as well as the basics you'll have to manage for the day. As the days go on you'll be given new things to deal with. Sometimes this will be new types of food to make or a new upkeep task to worry about. That's another thing. There is definitely something to worry about. You'll be fine and safe as long as you don't make multiple mistakes. Happy doesn't like it when you make mistakes. Once the day is done you're free to explore the town. Maybe do some horse racing, buy some food, maybe grab a coffee. Definitely don't go poking your nose where you shouldn't though. There's nothing back there for sure. Right? Well, if you do find yourself taking a look around you'll be happy to know that there are a lot of collectables for you to find. From cassette tapes that teach you the lore to cryptic drawings and messages you constantly feel like you are on to something as you go through the game. If you are lucky you can even find some tokens that will let you improve the restaurant.
Presentation:
Gameplay isn't the only place that the game shines though. The presentation in HHBF is spectacular. The developers have really gone above and beyond to make you feel like you are actually in a living breathing world. The television and radio is alive with original content. The cafe has a band casually playing as people go about their business. The museum is actually a really cool place to walk through and see just how much work the developers put into creating the universe of HHBF. The game offers a few different filters for your enjoyment but regardless of what you choose the game looks fantastic. The Scythe Dev Team didn't just create one generation of Happy's gang but multiple. The different art styles are all done to the same level of quality. In my opinion it really goes to show how much fun the team had with the concept. They clearly were passionate about the world people would be coming into and wanted to provide a certain experience that was as close to perfect as possible. Or maybe I should say perfectly imperfect. If the VHS look starts to get to your eyes like it can for some folks you can just toggle it off. It is a nice addition though for setting the tone of the entire game. I personally didn't use the VHS filter and I didn't feel like I lost any of the style in the presentation. A last thing worth mentioning here is the little references during the loading screens. Some of them are tongue in cheek and some of them are very obvious. Either way it was a nice little addition that once again shows the humour of the developers.
Sound Design:
The sound design in the game is fantastic. Jon of The Shred and the rest of the Sythe Dev Team went nuts when it comes to the music in the game. In case you haven't noticed above there are ELEVEN OSTs for HHBF and they are all fantastic. I am considering myself a new fan of Jon of The Shred simply because he brought so much variation and originality to the music. The HHBF theme song you will come to hear now and then kept reminding me of those old themes like the Pokemon opening theme. I have always been a fan of musicians who can maintain a varied style while still managing to keep the quality high and Jon of The Shred as well as the rest of the team involved have done such an incredible job on all fronts. In terms of sound effects the game will have you laughing one second then unsettled the next. It seems like just when you are forgetting about the oddities you are reminded that things aren't quite right. Whether it's the sounds of some of the restaurant visitors or the voice lines of the robotic mascots hanging out around the place. Something always seems to be off. The developers also used the sound effects effectively to utilise the players curiosity which makes the exploration feel a bit less forced despite being, for the most part, a linear experience.
Closing:
Happy's Humble Burger Farm went from being one of my most anticipated games of the year to one of my favorite games of the year. I intentionally avoided watching most of the reveals and trailers so I could go in with a fresh outlook and I am beside myself with joy. It isn't often that a developer not only meets your expectations but surpasses them. Regardless of what the Scythe Dev Team decides to do next they can consider me on board and eager. Congratulations to the team and all of the collaborators. This is really something to be proud of. If you want to see me play games like this then consider coming to my Twitch while I am live sometime! Twitch Twitter
