This game is a genuine misnomer with regards to reviewing. It has everything there for the elements of a relaxing sandbox, but also feels so minimal and empty without anything for the player to gain. Yes graphically it's beautiful and the elements of movement are fantastic, however there's literally nothing to do in the game but fly around, sit still and view what is happening around you, this to me lacks all aspects of gameplay. It's a sad day for me to give this a negative review, because I loved every aspect of this prior to purchase, I felt the art-style and intentions were amazing however upon purchase and playing, this simply didn't match any expectation nor did it provide me with any interesting surprises that could've improved upon the basic elements of 'gameplay' implemented in this. It's almost a tech-demo in every aspect in my opinion. As such I'll review it as one, simply put - don't spend a penny on this, watch a youtube video of the gameplay and you'll experience as much as you can by spending money on this and I mean that with an open heart hoping for better for this game whilst also not wanting to short any potential buyers of this game out of their own personal interests. PRIORITY IS TO WATCH GAMEPLAY OF THIS GAME PRIOR TO PURCHASE, YOU MAY FIND YOUR GAMEPLAY/GAME-TIME LIMITED UPON VIEWING ANY GAMEPLAY VIDEO.

I have been eyeing fugl for a long time, and today I finally got to play it. Here is my experience so far. I played the game with an XBOX ONE controller via USB cable. REALLY GOOD! - Really beautiful music when it plays. - Really relaxing sounds, especially the sound of waves and the wind blowing. - Vibrant colors painting a beautiful world. - Lots of fish and creatues that are fun to spot. - Interesting highlights making you want to see what might be there. - Performance. I have an an i5-2500K CPU (3.3 ghz) and a gtx 970 GPU. Everything was butter smooth all the time. - A joy to find new biomes. - Playing as different creatures are fun. Ducks are fast, but hard to control when flying slow, butterflies pretty much the opposite. COULD BE BETTER... - You do not play 1st or 3rd person, but in "bird ass" perspective. Simply said, I feel the camera is way too close to the bird. I'd prefer the camera a bit further away. And I would absolutely ADORE first person perspective. - It's currently a bit hard to land and take off. I'd prefer it to be easier. Also the bird flaps lake crazy when taking off. Would prefer a more slow, but powerfull flapping. - You "become" the birds and creatures you get close to for a short time, before turning back into your start bird. It is kind of cool sometimes, other times kind of irritating. I do not find it serene to become a flying monkey all the time. A skill to target and transform into the creates you see when YOU want to would be better (my opinion). - No reward for exploration. I don't expect much, but certain areas/spots should give a reward when you reach them. It could some interesting creatures to observe, a special view, some music you don't otherwise get to hear, a new ability, a piece of lore, , a nice little animation or scene, a mini game, or whatever. - More variation in the terrain generation. When you fly fast, things seem very similar. Points of interest, like an extra special create, a castle, and such would be nice. - Bird walking and sound animation. Right now you just hover in silence when you move on ground. IN SORE NEED OF IMPROVEMENT - Bugs. I often experienced the immidate surroundings around me disappearing. I could see things in the distance, but they would disaapear when I get close. - Crashes. I experienced it twice now. - A jump button. Srsly, I really missed that while on ground. - An introduction to the controls. You get a 5 second overview of the controls before the screen disappears. I'd like that to stay for a bit longer. Also, there was no mention that you can control the power of flaps by the amount of pressure you apply on the shoulder buttons. - The camera got stuck a couple of times. All in all, I would recommend getting this game, especially it costing next to nothing. Gameplay wise it has some way to go, and control/camera wise it could use a lot of improvement in my opinion. But seeing this is an early access game , I am in no doubt that this will all improve over time. I hope you and the developer(s) will find this review helpful. I can't wait to make this my go-to chill game after a long day of work, when it becomes a bit less frustrating to control your bird ;) Best regards from Denmark. P.S. Please please PLEEEEEASE add first person perspective! :D

I've always been a secret fan of voxel art & games, so I had to buy this one. Not everyone loves the boxy style, but the animals and the landscape are just beautiful and the fact, that you can basically shapeshift into every animal near you makes it even better. Once you turned into a new animal, it will be available in your avatar selection (Sharkbirds ftw). Definitely looking forward to future updates!

I have purchased Fugl as soon as I got wind of it's early access release. Sadly, my 3 years old laptop sporting an AMD card had firmly refused to run it. I've sent an email to the dev and got response the next day. Within 3 weeks, they managed to get the game to work on my card, and I've been flapping my boxy wings happily ever since. Now that's what I call customer support. Fugl's main draw is pretty clear at first glance. When GPUs became mainstream, this kind of voxel aesthetic has fallen out of favor. Which is a shame, because voxel graphics has much the same charm as pixel art do. A lot is left to the imagination with enough to stimulate your brain to make it work. For more than a decade I longed to walk the pixelated deserts of Outcast, and now Fugl's world is about the only place where you can get a piece of that experience. In my opinion that alone is worth the asking price. One thing to keep in mind though: Fugl is not a game. There are no goals, no fail-states, no good old shootin' and killin'. So if you are looking for gameplay and mechanical challenge, this is not it. As of now, Fugl is solely about the power fantasy of being able to fly. But if you are willing to spend some quality time with your own imagination, you are going love this birdie very much. As for me, I can't wait to see how it's will grow and expand during it's tenure in early access.

Please note that this is an Early Access review, and therefore the concerns I've raised could easily be resolved in future updates. Now this one is interesting. I *love* the voxel graphics. The flight model is passable, and the ambient sound is great. The water effects - when turned up - are fantastic, and there's just so much wildlife. The world doesn't feel dead or empty at all. Night-time sees lights come on until the world looks like something out of the Avatar movie. Where this falls down, however... I honestly was under the impression that the voxel-space could be almost infinite - you should never see repetition, or at least, very little. What I got, however, was extremely disappointing. I would be literally flying past a landmark - an easily recognised jagged bit of rock, by a strangely shaped lake, for example - and just as I was flying past it, I could see it coming up in front of me again, and again, and again. I was genuinely flying around the game-world every eleven seconds. I timed it. There's only so much exploring you can do when you can fly from one side of the world to the other in eleven seconds. Now, having said that, it seemed to be only in one direction. If the repetition kicked in going East-West, it didn't seem to kick in going North-South... so it seemed to be a very long and thin world, for some reason. I don't know if it's a bug, but it's a bit of a deal-breaker for me in a game that's all about finding new things to look at. The flying around was nice, but ultimately unsatisfying. The reason to play a game like this, for me, is to relax and tune out for a bit. I couldn't find myself doing that in this game, when compared even to something more action focused like "Superflight". In short, it's a nice concept with some fantastic features - but it just left me feeling a bit disappointed, over all. Perhaps worth it if it's on significant sale, but I certainly couldn't recommend it for full price, at this stage of development.

Update 2019: Everything that needed fixing has been addressed and patched out. All my positive points still stand and I can only continue to emphasize my support. I think this gem's ready for the spotlight! ------- Gorgeous meditative flyer. Lots of scenery and animals to discover, performs beautifully. Truly a joy to unwind for short sessions. Controls are clunky, it's very difficult to take off from water or a dead stop, it's not always clear what the buttons do. Moving and controlling the camera on the ground is nigh impossible. Once in the air, flying is blissful and swooping turns and dives come second nature. Map layout is a bit boggling. If you fly left or right from the start, you'll encounter a looping world every 15 seconds like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon background. If you fly along the intended direction, you'll traverse at least four other unique biomes including canyons, polar ice caves, and a trippy glowing shroom garden. Continue along, you'll reach an invisible barrier bordered by some kind of negative-space bizarro world. Morphing into other animals is a little confusing at first. It's never clear exactly what triggers the transformation or reversal. Each animal has different performance and physics, from deer whose antlers will drag you into a nosedive or a bald eagle that soars effortlessly and zooms with each wingbeat. It's claimed that there are hundreds of these different creatures, I know I've seen at least dozens. The workshop and editor provides the opportunity to shape your default flyer in myriad ways. As it stands, I doubt this is worth full price for anyone but the most avid fans of zone-out flying. Those fans have a VERY limited selection of games to enjoy, so it's a must-have title in its own niche. The developer has been readily available and verbose in interactions with the community, which tipped me over the edge into buying. In desperate need of more features, and existing ones need to be tightened up. I'm glad to have bought in early, but only because I believe in the future of the game and developer. If you've read down this far, at least head over to the forums and see how the dev interacts with the playerbase. Thanks for your time.

I would recommend this game with a few early-acess-related caveats. I'll begin with what I find enjoyable, follow with the caveats, and end with the obvious comparison with Superflight. Pros: Fugl succeeds in being relaxing and beautiful, which appear to be the main aims of the developers. When I bought it, I was looking for a game along those lines, and I certainly found it. The voxel graphics, while not for everyone, are done extremely well through the use of vibrant colors and otherworldly terrain aesthetics. The effect is the feeling of a dream world, which makes for a welcome escape if you're playing Fugl after a long day. Moreover, the controls are simple and effective. I have read quite a few reviews that complain about the control scheme, and I had trouble for about the first five minutes of play myself - but once you figure out the effects of the two different kinds of "flapping," it becomes quite intuitive. Caveats: There are definitely some early-access related issues that I have noted that incline me to state that $9.99 is a little steep for the product you are receiving right now - it is only worth that much if you consider it an investment in the future product and a vote of confidence in the devs' abilities to polish it up. The "edges" of the game world are ill-defined and clunky right now. the game proceeds linearly in a "north-south" direction beginning with the tropical biome and proceeding through 5 other biomes before you reach an awkward "end of the word" wall, essentially. Traveling "east-west" at any point takes you on an endless loop of repeating terrain. The devs have indicated that they are working on some sort of radical restructuring of how topography works, so we'll have to see how that turns out. I've also noticed that sometimes flocks of birds appear "frozen" in space and motionless as you fly around/through them, and the "level creator" feature is either incomplete or just baffling - despite youtube tutorials (which seem to be made for previous versions of the game), I have been unable to figure out how to use it. Comparisons: Fugl draws an easy comparison to Superflight, which are both "casual" flight sims with intentionally pixelated graphics. I own both, and I enjoy both - they are different enough to justify buying each one. At the base of it all, Superflight has a more obvious "goal" (do cool stuff to get points), whereas Fugl is just more aesthetically pleasing. Moreover, Superflight has a greater variety of "worlds" to fly around, with its virtually infinite procedurally generated maps, compared to Fugl's bounded world. That said, Fugl's world is doubtlessly more pretty. Superflight's polish and completeness at this point make it a better deal, in my opinion, especially at $2.99, but Fugl seems to have more potential. All in all, I am very excited to see where this game goes. I hope the devs keep working it and present a nice, polished product soon that does justice to the beatufiul visuals and relaxing feel they've created. Unitl then, I will keep popping in the game to play from time to time, but I am eagerly awaiting the updates.

To be short, I learned something good and bad from Fugl. The Good Thing: -Flying is fun. The Bad Thing: -I would not make a good flying birb. To be long, this game isn't exactly relaxing for me. But it is very enjoyable. Fugl has simple controls, and probably some science behind it. You get to choose your default bird, which is normally a rainbow bird, then morph into other birds as you come across the said type. It's like flying a plane. You can either choose to stay high above the mountains without having to slip through gaps, on the relaxing shore with the land creatures, or you can practice air-parkour. I'll reccommend the best birds for each one. Staying high up: Eagle or Crow Shore: Seagull or MonkeyBirb Air-Parkour: Eagle or AntelopeBirb The eagle is probably my favorite. You feel more air and gravity when you use it. But other than that, this game can be relaxing, exciting or just chill. Fugl is probably one of my favorite games of all time, even if nobody can pronounce it. In full conclusion, I highly reccommend Fugl to anyone who likes birds. Or flying in general.

There's not much of a game yet, to be honest. It's also fairly buggy. However, it's so much fun flying, it's so pretty, and it has so much potential, I'm giving this game a thumb's up. As long as the developers build something out of this basic start, this is going to be great. --- More than a year later update: They've been consistently updating this game. It's gotten MUCH prettier than it was in my last review. They've also worked out all the bugs I had found back in the first review. Props to the devs for continuing work on this unique, relaxing game. It's an even higher thumbs-up for me now. Highly recommended for zen, relaxing, destressing.

If you play this game right after AER Memories of Old, it would certainly disapoint you. i didn't know what to expect, and i am still searching... What is this game ? Well, as it is told, you are free, free to told you any story you want in your head while flying. And the size of the world is quite an issue. It is cleverly mix up so you can't see any seams, but at full speed you loop the world in about 6 seconds... The relax aspect is very relative. Once you touch the environment, the fun is over, you end up with weird controls, and a lot of patience to take off properly. In 1h of game a got only 30s of music... For exemple it would have been great to choose to take the animal characteristics by flying close and pressing X. Not jut randomly morphing. Remember to delete the fugl foler in : C:\Users\(yourname)\AppData\Local\ I don't know why but there is almost 2Go of data here (maybe generated world )... Uninstall the game from steam does not delete this folder.
