I've been playing Blockland since early 2008, and honestly seeing it in it's current state brings me great sadness. I was eight years old when I first got the game, and seeing as it was basically my first non-f2p PC game, I played it absolutely non-stop until around 2012. Being so young, I didn't really know anything about computers, but seeing all the cool mods that some servers had inspired me to learn how to mod my own game, which eventually lead to me going down the virtual rabbit hole later in my life. This game was amazing, had a very diverse community, and kept me entertained throughout my childhood. For those of you new to Blockland, the game was not always in the state it is now. It used to have an amazing modding scene with maps, custom AI, gamemodes, custom items, and a large amount of servers that all had their own unique quirks. It's arguable what went so wrong, but in my honest opinion, it was the removal of maps. Either right before, or during the move to Steam (I honestly forgot), Step 1 Games decided to remove maps in favor of subpar lighting and weather effects. The reason stated was that "The effects conflicted with pre-built maps", so the decision was made to remove them entirely. Custom maps were no longer playable, the game's superb original maps were all removed, and all we were left with was the empty slate map. After this mistake, the developers added very little to the game before going entirely dark, leaving Blockland to die slowly. In 2019, twelve years later, Blockland is a game with maybe a few active players on a good day. It still has basic building mechanics, and the same scripting interface it had in 2007. The major modding resource, RTB, has been discontinued and there looks to be no future for this late-2000s classic. This game is not worth money in it's current state. If the developer reverts it to the pre-steam version, then it'd maybe be worth looking into, but without maps and a playerbase, Blockland is nothing more than an empty, endless void with very minimal building features.

As many others have said, this game is deader than dead. It's so dead that I honestly wonder if the only thing keeping the master server up is Badspot leaving auto-renew on PayPal turned on by accident. To make a long story short, the developer frustrated his community years ago by removing a ton of beloved maps in the v20 update to add shaders, claiming it was to support the addition of future content due to the aging engine as well as getting the game on Steam Greenlight. Afterwards, he released one more content update (adding the events system and bots which was admittedly pretty cool and game-changing), and then stopped updating the game outside of minor maintenance releases every now and then. I don't blame him for it since he kept the game updated consistently for a decade and the Torque engine is dang old with a capital O, but it's had pretty severe consequences on the state of the game. The multiplayer that was the lifeblood of this game is now dead in the water as a result. Six months ago you maybe had 70 players at peak hours, and now that's 30 or so as an optimistic estimate, spread out across a dozen servers. It's so small that you can't even scroll down on the server list anymore. Unless you like building things to yourself all the time, you're essentially paying ten dollars to walk around a series of ghost towns. I loved this game as a kid before I had it on Steam and even for 143 hours when I did get it on Steam years later. I miss this game and I cherish the memories it gave me, but at this point it's time to let Blockland fade away and give it the peaceful death it deserves. If you still want to buy this game and try it out, know what you are getting into. EDIT: Since I know people are going to try it; no, I have no interest in Brickadia. That game might even be more dead than Blockland itself. Last I checked it doesn't even have mod support despite the developers saying it would a while ago. It could've been a decent spiritual successor but going by the server list it's got...four people on one server. rofl EDIT 1 ADDENELUM: I was far too harsh on Brickadia with this initially. Yes I know it's in open alpha and you can play it, but it's still pretty barren and I would just like to wait until it gets to a more stable state. EDIT 2: Because this is something I forgot to mention. The shaders that Badspot killed the game's beloved old maps for aren't even enabled by default. It's not like there's any graphics auto-adjustment on first launch, they're just set to off by default and you would never even know they existed unless you check the game options yourself. Even on ultra settings you can catch seams in where the shadows are anyways. Totally worth killing the game's community for.

Blockland is a very unfortunate case of a game being too slow to update and maintain its player base. I mean, it used to be really fun, and I mean REALLY fun, but now all of its servers are shutdown, unpopulated or just freebuilds packed with addons. I knew about it before it was greenlit on Steam and I was super stoked to find out one day that it finally was. By the time I got to it, there were still quite a few people playing it. It didn't stay that way forever, though; once people realized the game was dying, server after server was getting taken down by their operators. Before long, there was no longer anything meaningful to do. All because the game refused to change, or accommodate for changing times. The overall gameplay has remained the same for eight years, and has grown stale. It's just not fun anymore. You've done me proud, Blockland; now stay in the ground.

Such a shame to see this wonderful game die.

What happened to you, Blockland? Your community use to make the game so inviting. You could easily find servers with lots of people who were friendly, now the few servers you have are just toxic. It's gotten as bad as Roblox's community, and i regret re-buying Blockland.

A long-decayed corpse of a bygone era. Still fun to poke it every once in a while

I just wish this game was more active again. I remember playing Blockland on a Windows XP machine when I was a lad back when the game had default maps like Bedroom and Kitchen. I always remember playing the demo of the game while listening to Scatman John on a Windows 7 laptop in the early 2010's. Today, it's a virtual ghost town, with occasional players showing up to play the game once in a while, but because of the developer's decision of the removal of default maps, not many people play the game anymore, he was also rather toxic to the community by unfairly banning people and dictating what mods mods could be used and was just a jerk to everyone. He was the one who wrecked the game for everyone for those reasons. I just wish the game would be back to normal. This release hasn't seen a lot of people lately. I bought this game 2 years ago just to relive it, but it's just as empty as I remember it even when I originally played the demo of the game for the very first time. I wish.... I wish this game can be restored to the way it used to be.....

The bloated, sugar-coated corpse of Roblox lost all the charm. Blockland lost all the playerbase. And yet, it holds the charm both games had in their prime.
