The year is 1997. Two brothers from Czech Republic, Ondřej and Marek Španěl, alongside their business partner Slavomír Pavlíček started working on a new game. The team had envisioned an open world realistic tactical shooter and so Poseidon entered development. Flash forward to year 1999. The three form a new game development studio titled Bohemia Interactive and Poseidon eventually gets released in 2001 as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Rising, published by Codemasters. Following it's massive success, Bohemia started working on so called "game 2", a sequel to Operation Flashpoint. However BI and Codemasters went separate ways after several conflicts and Codemasters kept the flashpoint licence. Eventually in 2005, Bohemia released a sequel to Operation Flashpoint, titled Arma: Armed Assault. It's massive success led BI to kickstart the Arma franchise as the official sequels to the original Operation Flashpoint. Inspired by their success, Codemasters followed and released two of their own Operation Flashpoint games, Red River and Dragon Rising. Their failure led Codemasters to abandon the franchise while Bohemia Interactive's Arma series thrived thanks to Arma 2. In 2011, Bohemia signed an agreement with Codemasters and Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Rising was handed back to Bohemia Interactive, who re-released it digitally as Arma: Cold War Assault and so the series went full circle. The game uses photoscanned textures and environments. While the models may look a bit blocky by 2001 standards, the textures hold up really well and the game also sports a good lighting system for the time and it also has a really nice visual style that holds a lot of magic. The sound design is pretty good for the time aswell, especially with the EAX sound system. The gunfire echoes realistically through the environment, the developers even coded sound travel time simulation, the gunshot sounds are meaty and the ambience is pretty good. The voice acting sounds a bit unnatural due to the way the voice lines are handled but this system also allows for a huge variety of different situational voice calls that very few games have even today. The soundtrack is also pretty amazing. Composed by Ondřej Matejka, it is a combination of orchestral music and synths and feels like a 1980s action movie score. There are plenty of great and memorable tracks and it's definitely worth giving it a listen even outside the game. What really sells this game though is it's unpreceeded attention to detail and raw realism. While it may not seem that advanced nowadays, it's pretty damn impressive for 2001. The maps are huge, have realistic terrain and a lot of small hidden details and easter eggs. You can use gas stations, climb up elevator shafts and so on. Since the game is set in 1985, it also faithfully replicates the atmosphere and feel of the 1980s with period accurate uniforms and weaponry (with the exception of the PP-19), vehicles etc. You die in a few shots, there's a radio calls system and different soldier specialisations with different equipment and role. The levels are huge and very open aswell, allowing you to approach situations in a lot of unique ways. You can also drive a variety of vehicles and the game sports strong mod tools as well as a very nice mission editor. The game does feel a bit janky but you'll quickly get accustomed to the controls and gameplay. It's a hardcore shooter which requires you to tacticise and you cannot go in guns-blazing. The main campaign takes place in 1985 and follows 4 main protagonists from the US Military: Corporal David Armstrong, Lieutenant Robert Hammer, Captain Sam Nichols and Captain James Gastowski fighting in an armed conflict on the Malden Islands against the Soviet Army. The Steam version also gets pre-packaged with the Resistance expansion where you play as Viktor Troska, a guerilla fighting against the Soviets on the island of Nogova three years prior to the events of the main campaign. You get a nice variety of different missions on several different islands. The missions are unique, the storyline is cheesy but fun and memorable. A second expansion titled Red Hammer also came out, but it was developed by a different studio and is non-canon. Simply put + Soundtrack + Sound design + Story + Graphics + Mission structure + Realism + Level Design + Resistance is included - A bit janky in some areas Simply a great game made by a passionate and small team from Czech Republic that deserves more recognition. If you've ever played any of the newer Arma games, make sure to get this one aswell to see how the franchise began back in 2001 and you'll definitely feel right at home here and get a lot of fun outta this one. This game is the father of the modern milsim genre and is definitely worth getting.

What the hell is your problem people?! (Im talking about the recent negative reviews that brought this game down to mixed) Youre buying a 21 year-old game, what did you expect? AAA graphics? Call of duty gunplay? Taredown level destruction? The industry has had 21 years of time to evolve and improve since the release of this game, and you expect a game equal to todays standarts? I would even argue that Arma 1 is better than most shooters today. Can you name a game where you can actually use the numbers on the sniper scope to actually estimate distance, and they're not just there because 'random sniper scope numbers and shit go brr'? A game where you have freedom to adapt while on mission and are not stuck to a linear path telling you exactly what to do, or else unlce rockstar is gonna be sad? (looking at you Red Dead 2..). A game where you're not an effing super-soilder that can take 20 bullets to his face, and have to carefully plan out your mission, or you die in 1 bullet? Where you have the freedom of commanding your squad, and have them do bascically whatever you would need? A super robust mission editor, where i, a veteran player, am still learning new things even after 7 years of palying this game (I played on older systems beforehand, I have more than just 19 hours.)? Also Graphics dont mean shit. 'I dOnT lIKe thE fAcEs' ugh.. I actually prefer games with 1990s - 2000s grapchis, where 'thE fAcEs' are 4 polygons, because it reminds me that grapchis arent everyting, and if a game has shit gameplay but good grapchis, then ultimatly its worth shit.. becasue If it was all about the graphics, then it wouldnt be called a 'game', but it would be called a 'graphic', for gods sake. If you are experiencing performance isuies, Id be more supprised if you werent. Running old software that was not optimised for 16 or how many core procesors, which more and more people have these days, then there are gonna be some issues. In short, if you are expecting a modern AAA level grapchily photoreal, hold-my-hand difficulty, compatible with modern hardware expirece, then please stop shitttting on Arma 1's legacy, and please stop expecting miracles from a two decade old peiece of software. Dakujem za strpenie. Čus

The Operation Flashpoint... Are you the fastest? are you the toughest, are you the most sneaky? Forget what you know in other games, this one will eat you for breakfast if you are not the brightest. -AI in this game knows how to move in coordination with other elements, and how to get your men destroyed, -If you dont know how to use terrain for your advantage, it will teach you, teach you hard, -Soon you will appreciate every single bullet, grenade, vehicle or chance you get, better you will learn how to use compass, map, stars, tides and landscape to carry out mission, -Ultimately you *will* learn when to quit and fight another day! If you are able to write scripts, you will find yourself in your own matrix!... so this is NOT ANOTHER GAME, THIS IS A SPECIAL GIFT,

This is the classic. To this day, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (Now labled ARMA Cold War Assault) is still a fantastic tacticool shooter and soldier sim. The visuals have aged badly, but it's got it where it counts: the fun factor. If you have a low-end system, this is a great game to pick up. It includes the Cold War Crisis and Resistance campaigns. This is not a game where you can rely on your twitch abilities, regenerating health, and hit markers. One shot can mean death. There is bullet drop. There is armor to contend with. You have to think to win. A brilliant game, full stop.

"I have played this for hours and hours when it was released in 2001, called Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, almost 2 years before Steam was released" An old classic military simulator, actually the first one. Have had many hours in this game, building Zombie missions, getting chased by robots and just pure and fun deathmatch with friends! If you want an improvemwnt to this awesome game try the FFUR 1985 2008 Mod, which keeps some things from the original ARMA: http://operationflashpoint.filefront.com/file/FFUR_1985_2008_Edition;92092 Or the FFUR SLX 2007 mod, which improves everything: http://operationflashpoint.filefront.com/file/FFURSLX_2007;82613 It'll improve the AI and also the graphics/gameplay! There's also plenty of addons and mods out there that you can mess around with in the built in mission editor.

What can I say, one of the most complex (for it's day, in fact some pre-release news articles said what they promised was not possible!) and exceptionally deep FPS / WAR SIMS ever created. Ok the graphics where slated from the start, but at the time NOBODY had whole island you could drive arround for hours, CS maps are stamp sized compared to the almost limitless world found in this game. Hence something had to be reduced, and that was the bitmap and model quality. However, the game play, quirky AI (some times they do funny things them AI), and a great story. It's got a steep (not CS player friendly) VERRY steep learning curv, but once you have it mastered, you will love this game. You can only save once per mission, is a master piece, which forces you to re-appraise your tactics. Brutally hard in places, epic in others. I actually think the views down a valley, with tanks (oh and the sound is ace too) rolling in with smoking engines and dust... was just beautiful. It for me, is the defining open world game too. Here's an example, there's a mission to take out a scud launcher. Time is limited, you have a load of men, some trucks and I think an APC and Jeep. I spent a couple of days trying to complete this mission, and then I thought about what happens in the mission. At a certain point, an enemy chopper attacks (a hind I think), so that made me think, where did that come from... so I worked out it's arrival vector (seriously) and then the next mission I send the guys to 'distract' most of the enemy forces, whilst I took the Jeep and raced in the direction the chopper would later arrive from... sure enough several KM away, there was a field with the Hind and several pilots, some support vehicles and a landing pad. So what? Well this is an open world, so I shot the pilots and soldiers, stole the Hind, flew to the SCUD launcher, blew it to pieces and was home in time for supper. Another time, having been dumped in the middle of nowhere without a map or compass, and in the dark, you must head in a specific direction to escape... it's didn't take me that long to work out to use the Big Bear constallation to find the Pole Star to get a bearing North... priceless gaming at it's absolute best. TBH most all of the new 'versions' of ARMA (which follwed this game), where not as good, no or little story, but better (and slower) graphics sure. But I think like chess (which I've played a great game with bits of tissue with letters on as the pieces at an Airport..), it's not really how it looks, it's not how slick the controls are (they are a little clunky), it just every little thing else. That is why, this is probably STILL the best gaming experience of my entire life, and I'm not sure (like a first love!), I'll ever quite get that feeling again, no matter how good anything new looks.... At this price, it's a gift and should be in everyones collection. :o)

Great game then, great game now. PROS Immersive single player campaign. Its pretty tough, but once you get to grips with it it is rewarding. Its also a good basis to get familiar with the newer games in the ARMA series. Its cheap. CONS It has not aged too well graphically.
