Fight monsters in squad-level, turn-based, tactical combat. Solasta's dynamic environment offers some interesting tactical options. Bridges can collapse, leaving enemies stranded and vulnerable. Walls and columns can be pushed over - on top of your foes, if you do it right. The world is your playground.

  • Prepare to Think in Three Dimensions

The dungeons in Solasta are more than flat game-boards. Climb, jump, or fly around obstacles. Evade or surprise foes from above or below. Push them into chasms or drop things on their heads. Position yourself on high grounds to start the fight with an advantage.

Size also matters. Escape through narrow passages where bigger enemies won't fit and crawl through tunnels to find secret areas. Take advantage of the environment to find cover suited to your own size. Watch out, though - the monsters are also thinking vertically.

In Solasta, the adventure does not stop after the campaign is over. Unleash your creativity and craft your own dungeons to play and share with friends with the snap of a finger using the in-game Dungeon Maker! I really want to like this game, and it really seems to have a lot of potential, but it's just too flawed. The dialogues are terrible and all feel the same, with very few voice actors reading all the lines. They also feel very disconnected from one another, and sometimes even from what is going on in the scene. The characters are almost unbearable to look at, and with few exceptions they always end up in the uncanny valley range. The tabletop rules feel like they're enforced too strictly, light especially becomes an annoyance. Overall I can't recommend this, even though the premises of the game are good.

Fun 5th Edition D&D game. I played it with a friend it it was fun. Don't expect this to be BALDUR'S GATE 3 of story telling, but still a very nice game to play. My only concern is that Wizard's of the Coast is going to be greedy and screw over the Devs on this game. I have not seen classes and sub-classes yet. Not sure when those will come out.

More than any other video game I've played, this game feels like playing D&D. It's not a triple-a, high-budget masterpiece. It's your cousin Mitch's homebrew campaign, and he's put a lot of work into it! It's Saturday afternoon, you're in his garage, there's a mini-fridge of soda and you're gonna order pizza later. Katie's elf wizard is hilariously stuck-up, and you're the only one paying attention to the plot, and the rogue insisted on sneaking ahead and got absolutely destroyed by a bunch of magic skeletons. Everyone rushes in to save him. You're all gonna play until 1 AM. I love this game. You might love it too.

A great implementation of D&D 5th edition, both rule-wise and feeling-wise. I heartily recommend this to any D&D 5e player - just seeing the rules simulated so well in a video-game setting is delightful. Just keep in mind that the core of the game lies with the combat simulation and not the story/plot or any role-playing aspects. Below are my thoughts in more detail. What I think is great: - I like how dialogs are composed of different party members saying different lines; it really feels like a D&D party talking with NPCs. - Despite the combat having a lot of depth, it is handled well and can be played relatively quickly. - There's a lot of verticality - cliffs, flying/climbing monsters, fly/climb/levitation spells, etc. It makes combat interesting. - The enemy AI in combat is pretty good, especially for monsters that have more abilities and spells available than just simple attacks. Example 1: I've fought a monster that had a free disengage, so it kept attacking, then disengaging and fleeing back into magical darkness that another monster has placed. Example 2: I've fought a mage that was flying high to be out of reach of my melee attackers, and kept countering my high-level spells and casting shields against my magic missiles. - I like how you create your whole party, and I like the party size - 4 is really a good sweet-spot. - I like the attention to lighting. Lighting is something that's hard to track at a D&D table but much easier in a video game setting, and their current implementation really makes you conscious of lights, which I find add a nice tactical layer to combat. - Likewise, I like how you have to think about food, ammunition, carrying weights, spell foci, and other minute D&D details (even amount of pages remaining in your spellbook - wow). I'm sure others would find it tedious, but for me it adds depth and realism to the game. - I like the implementation of world travel, with rests, random encounters, and the small interesting messages and random loot. I also found that encounter occur often enough to be meaningful, but not so often as to make every overland travel infuriating. - I like the getting-familiar-with-monsters subsystem - you progressively learn more about monsters as you defeat them and succeed on post-battle survival checks. I think it's a cool and organic way to learn about things like HP, AC, damage resistances, etc. - I found the economy to be really well-balanced. Throughout the entire game gold kept on being important and useful, but not to the point of feeling starved of it. - The game allows for user-designed campaigns, which is great for the longevity of the game after finishing the main campaign. Stuff that might make you reconsider: - There's an emphasis on combat and exploration over role-playing and meaningful choices. I'm fine with it, but if you're looking for actual role-playing, you won't fine it here. This game really reminds me of old-school D&D in that regard. - I really didn't like the writing. I found the story hard to follow, the dialogs confusing, and even party banter often left me wondering what they are trying to say. - My number 1 concern is low replayability. Because of the lack of meaningful choices and the game's high linearity, and because there are just 6 classes, this game will likely have considerably lower replayability than other similar RPGs. Replayability for me is not a reason not to buy this game - just be aware of this limitation. I hope they improve things in the full release. This is also strongly correlated with the next point: - Character build customization options are limited. There's no multiclassing and most feats only have boring passive feats - a real shame, as more active feats (and feat combinations) are one of the best ways to make more interesting builds in 5e... and consequently, more interesting combat and more varied playthroughs. Also no variant human choice, which is related to this problem. Yes there are subclasses and other player choices, and spell choices, and they do help - but most of them don't fundamentally change the way a class plays. - There's a *very* strict adherence to D&D 5e rules; there are deviations, but they are really the exception here. If you have zero familiarity with that system, your learning curve will probably be steeper than with other RPG games. - There's a fairly involved crafting system, composed of collecting recipes, ingredients, and crafting tools. It's too good to skip, both at low and high levels, but I find it a little tedious, mostly because: (1) there are a lot of different ingredients, and the inventory system does not have adequate ways to organize them; and (2) having to reselect crafting as you travel, again and again, gets old quickly. - When exploring there are occasionally "secret" containers or pathways, but they are always highlighted even appear on the map; so finding these secrets is often easy (even though sometimes reaching them isn't, for example when you must use a jump spell). Finally, some comparisons: - This game reminds me a lot of Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil - strict adherence to the rules, clean interface, and very dungeon-crawl feeling while minimizing hard role-playing choices. If you liked ToEE, I'm sure you'll love this. - Compared with old-school D&D-based RPGs like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, this game has (1) turn-based combat, (2) less text to read, in dialogs and in books, (3) less meaningful choices to make, (4) less containers and less secrets, (5) more interesting combat areas, (6) is more linear. Also it's much slower in distributing magical treasures than BG1 and BG2, which I like. - Compared with old but not really old-school RPGs like Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age, this game feels more like you're playing a group rather than a protagonist with followers. And also it has the same combat differences mentioned above. - Compared with Baldur's Gate 3, which roughly shares the same 5e D&D system, this game feels much MUCH more like traditional old-school D&D, whereas BG3 is more like Divinity running on a *very* lax variation of 5e. Don't get me wrong; I love Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2, and I'm also having a blast playing BG3. But despite running on very similar rulesets, they really do have *significantly* different feel to them.

So I really like this game. It does some things better than what I have played of BG3 and some things worse but for the most part the 5e rule implementation is great. The game ticks all the right boxes for a D&D style RPG. My only concern is how they plan on leaving early access in just over a week. My game constantly has corrupted saves. If I wasn't a veteran player and always keep 3 to 4 saves this game would be unplayable. Even doing that, I lose 15 to 20 minutes of play time every time a save is corrupted. Even the autosaves are corrupted. I verify files as instructed and they are always fine but the saves are still not working. There are also issues with clickable objects not working, items not having the correct descriptions, and the crafting continuing indefinitely after you complete the requirements (I have been crafting Whiteburn short sword for 50 of 36 hours and 32 of 18 successes). The game is great otherwise. I really hope these problems get fixed at full release. I still highly recommend the game just keep in mind you might have the save file problem I am having. Edit: I may have figured out why the save corruption is happening. When you load into a location your party will not be selected. If you save at this time the file will be corrupted. This is why the autosave is corrupted too. So if you save when you enter a new location make sure you select your party first.

Solasta Review, 2 days after Full Release

    Errata
I'm starting this review on May 29, 2021 noon EST, which is two days after the game released out of Early Access. I just completed the main story arc and watched the ending credits roll. It took me 37 hours in-game. I did not complete all side quests, nor did I go out of my way to skip any side quests. I played Early Access, but only got 5 hours in before the official launch patch. I completed the play-through on 'authentic'-level difficulty, and I decided to turn off encumbrance rules and somatic casting rules at around hour 20 (for quality of life reasons). Overall Impressions
C for lore and plot. By dev's design choice, the main arc is railroaded and few player choices occur in the game. Story arc is standard RPG fare. I did not remember any particularly bad writing that took me out of the game world's narrative. I did remember some punchy lines that made me grin, and some surprising bits of interesting dialogue. Because there are no pre-made companions with story, I didn't find myself caring too deeply about my characters. There were a few interesting NPCs for personality and backstory but that was the exception, not the rule. A for game-play mechanics. This is the bread and butter of the game. I was pleasantly surprised with how much this game was able to accomplish with the bare-bones license off core DnD 5e rules. You will be in combat a lot, and it will be difficult, both tactically and for reasons of randomness. There were times for me when bad luck streaks forced a reload, but for me it eventually led to greater satisfaction. I had to walk away from the game a few moments to reset my frustration, but I always came back. A for music. Special kudos for the epic music during final story sequence and boss fights. Punched way above its level for setting the atmosphere and tone of the game. C- for voice acting. I didn't mind this, as I knew going into the play-through that this is a small company running off Kickstarter. Voice acting is expensive, and I am glad the company put their limited resources towards gameplay instead. What I Wish I Knew
<*> Light and illumination is very important in this game. These types of cantrips and spells can save loads of frustration. <*> Concentration is the bottleneck resource for spelling classes. Plan for a go-to concentration spells and many one-shot damage, healing, or utility spells. For me, it was greater invisibility to let my rogue go to town with sneak attacks. <*> Starting off with a surprise round against the enemy is almost required on the difficult encounters. The standard fireball from stealth is extremely satisfying and never gets old. <*> The food rations mechanic is easier to manage if you have someone able to cast Goodberry or Conjure Food. I eventually decided that it didn't add value to my experience and this was a primary reason I turned off encumbrance rules, so I could purchase 200 rations. Your experience may vary, and I was glad the devs allowed the toggle in the difficulty settings. TL;DR
You will like this game if you like games like XCOM, Baldur's Gate type CRPGs, and tactical grid combat focused-games like Fire Emblem. Don't play this game for its RPG or story, play it for its faithful adaptation of 5e DnD rules and to support an indie developer who pulled off a herculean effort that many AAA studios fail at. Money, and more importantly, time, well-spent for this old-school gamer.

Let's be honest, you're here because you don't have the time, fellow nerd-friends, or sufficiently patient DMs to keep playing DnD. So you went looking for a CRPG set in 5e and you've already maxed out at level 4 in Baldur's Gate III like seven times now. That led you digging further until you stumbled across this obscure title and you want to know if it will scratch that same itch - for me, it did, but here's where I'll qualify my recommendation: If you are an avid 5e fan, or explicitly are trying to get into 5e, this is your game. If you just sorta like CRPGs and want something you can drop 1000 hours into, this may struggle to earn your $40 with so much quality competition on the market. Overall, I currently give it a 6/10 with a solid 8 or 9 waiting for it on the horizon if the devs can continue releasing quality updates as they have been. That's pretty much my summary, but if you're interested in a more thorough breakdown: PRESENTATION: - The game's graphics, especially character models and animation, are pretty rough. Some are much better than others, but the player characters are especially jank - given how much time you spend looking at them, it will eventually catch your attention. The environments, however, are usually great - even the more "generic" caves and "necromancer lairs" feel practically made and inspired. While those seem like fairly negative takes overall, what's there gets the job done. It all struggles compared to other, more polished and larger projects, but Solasta's big strength comes from its flexibility and it's hard to be hard on the graphics when you realize the game was practically built for customization. - Voice acting also ranges immensely, with some performances anywhere from remarkably professional, but most feeling rather phoned in. The game does feature a novel dynamic dialogue system where the personalities you give your characters determine what quips they make during exchanges, and what options are available during dialogue choices. As wonky as dialogue is, I can't help but applaud the result. If anything, expect the jank, and let the rest pleasantly surprise you. - The music is good, your standard strings, horns and orchestral fantasy faire. That's all I really have to say about it, which should tell you everything you need to know. Gameplay: Please note the crux of this review is based on the main campaign in terms of difficulty. Other campaigns are available including player created ones from the workshop. The game is built on 5e turn-based combat - in regards to mechanics, there's not really a whole ton to add to that. The main thing I'll give it credit for is the 3-dimensionality it brings into play with actual abilities like fly, or spider-walking on walls. This is a very welcome addition compared to how some CRPGs make those spells just give you +2 AC and whatnot. Abilities that pull, push and prone your opponents. Doing so isn't quite as satisfying as some other games, but shooting enemies out of the sky, or yeeting them off cliffs into lava is always its own satisfaction. The game has plenty of classes and subclasses with more on the way. For those unfamiliar with WotC's trademark practice, the core of the setting in its races and classes is public domain. The added non-core classes, sub-classes, and races are behind copyright and its unlikely TA will license them anytime soon. Homebrew content has already started filling the gap, but don't expect to make a Hexblade anytime soon. (No workshop as of time of review) My main gripe with the gameplay is the encounter design seems rather sadistic. Even with a fairly optimized party, it often felt like I only won when the game felt like letting me win. Given this is the nature of RNG-based dice systems like DnD, this may seem like a petty complaint. Things like using sunlight to blind enemies, or crowd control to leverage the odds is totally what the game expects of you - which I like. The problem is without the secret tools the encounters were designed with in mind, you're basically doomed to save-scum certain encounters until the dice give you permission to win. Keep in mind this is on the standard 3/5 "Authentic Mode". While it's cool your main party of 4 are all equally the main character, the resulting inability to swap out characters, re-specc them, or add new custom ones mid-campaign feels like a huge step backwards in the genre. Given the aforementioned dependency on leveraging some mechanics or experimenting, it feels like a lot of tactical decision-making was left out. Instead I found myself straight up restarting the campaign from scratch when I found out my build decisions are sub-optimal, not even bad, just not carrying their weight to the game's expectations. Hopefully this is remedied in some form in the future, but it feels pretty egregious when you only have a party capped at four (plus the occasional bespoke campaign guest appearance). For instance, it's given everything as is, making your party contain a Cleric is almost mandatory. All that said, again, the core of the game is solid. Sure, it's mind-numbingly frustrating when your 27AC, 110hp paladin gets downed after two rounds because the enemy rolled nothing below an 17 that whole time. But when you set yourself up for success with clever mechanics use and preparation, pulling out a solid win in a mainline fight is practically just as satisfying as a real TableTop game. I know I'm coming across as rather salty, but if you don't audibly ask "Yo, WTF!?" atleast once every other level, I'd be rather surprised. Story: The main story is decent with nice world-building that doesn't over rely on in-your-face exposition. It probably won't blow your mind, but I'll admit the Antagonists' plan was rather solid without feeling forced - which I gotta give it credit for. Again, there's not much to say here, but I personally wouldn't count that against the game, especially when player-made campaigns exist. All in all, Solasta is a decent enough 5E engine that I'd say earned my $40. Prepare for some major ups and downs in the experience, and there's definitely a full length to-do list for the devs in my book - but they've done a good job so far and dont appear to be losing steam just yet.

    Apr 12, 2022

It's games like this that makes me wish Steam had a "mixed" rating for reviews instead of a solid yes or no recommendation. On the one hand, Tactical Adventures absolutely nailed DnD 5e, from the combat to the classes to the systems that made the game run. Dungeon crawling is fun but challenging, there were only a few fights that had a huge difficulty spike but solid encounters most of the way through. On the other hand, if you're looking for a roleplay experience, look literally anywhere but here. The story is fine but man, the dialogue is absolutely horrendous. When you create your characters, you pick a background and the personality attributes. A great system in theory but then the game ignores the choices you made in literally every single social interaction your party has. My lawful good Paladin is supposed to be kind, altruistic and lawful so why is she constantly disrespecting authority? Why did she say that we should let the last survivors of a destroyed garrison squabble and kill each other? Because the plot demanded that someone says it... because reasons. Why is nobody in my party reacting to the undead filled castle in the middle of the spooky swamp? We literally asked a guy outside the castle what was going on with it, he tells us its full of undead who tolerate him.... because reasons and my party with a Paladin and a Cleric in it had no reaction to that news whatsoever. I can understand bad voice acting, especially when the company that made the game speaks a different launguage than you do. I can forgive weird animations, weird dialogue, even a generic plot. But this game will routinely rip you right out of any immersion you have and won't even realize it's doing it. If you want to do a bunch of dungeon crawls, Solasta is great for that, their systems are absolutely solid and you'll have fun. But man, Tactical Adventures. You guys need to hire some writers and shore up the roleplaying aspects of your games.
