What People are Saying

About the Game

The goal is simple: Reclaim earth.

In Second Extinction you take on hordes of mutated dinosaurs with up to two friends. Solo players beware: Second Extinction is designed with squads in mind. Only the strong will survive.

The goal of Early Access is also simple: Work with our community to make the

best game possible.

We want to hear your feedback loud and clear, and we intend for our community

to be a vital part of the development process.

Even so, there’s plenty to get your teeth (and claws) into from day one: 6 heroes,

11 weapons (with 5 upgrade tiers each) and 6 missions - plus some special side quests - across multiple regions of our big map.

Our mantra is that players win battles, communities win wars. Nowhere is this

more true than our War Effort feature.

Each region of our big map has a unique threat level. This threat level can be

lowered if enough of our players are successful in their missions and activities. But the dinosaurs aren’t resting either, and they’ll focus their efforts where you aren’t.

Each week the community will see the fruits of their labours or feel the

consequence of their incompetence. Let the threat level get out of control and

you can expect an especially tough Emergence Event to be waiting for you.

By playing Second Extinction you’re not just picking up another co-op shooter.

You’re joining us on a journey as we shape the experience. Every piece of feedback and every mission you play matters. So what are you waiting for? The fight to reclaim earth starts here.

The first thing you should know is that this game is 3-player. Next I’ll list the good and the bad. The Good: -The art and presentation are nice. The art style reminds me of “cool dinosaur toys” brought to life. The drop into and extraction out of missions are cool and immersive. -The combat loop is fun. The raptors gib nicely and the guns are punchy. There’s also a fun ragdoll system that allows you to send enemies flying and have them die from the fall damage. -The big dinosaurs have many different attacks and their armor and weak spots emphasize teamwork to take em down. -Every operator plays differently. Each one feels like a representation of a play style -The one map is good. It’s got unique locations and the enemy density regularly shifts in relation to global player actions. -The campaign missions are good. They are more than a laundry list and come with exclusive areas and scripted sequences. -No Microtransactions. Now for the Bad: -There’s only one map. It’s smaller than it looks, and may get boring. -After the campaign, the only real thing to do is freeroam and complete POIs and contracts, or do horde mode, but that doesn’t give any rewards yet. -All big dinosaurs cause staggering with just about every attack, and can follow up to damage the hell out of you, especially in solo. Staggering attacks should be an opening for the raptors, but instead an ankylosaurus can combo you to death if it wants. Most prominent in solo. -The gun upgrades are unbalanced to say the least. Some require going all-in on damage or stability to unlock a mildly useful perk, while some have very useful perks that require less commitment. At the moment I don’t see a reason to run anything but machine gun and revolver, their upgrades are the best. -Enemy variety is low. You’ve got 5 raptor variants, two Styracho variants, two Ankylo variants, and a Rex. If the devs are taking suggestions, I say they should have a Therizinosaurus. -No text chat. -The netcode makes everything delayed or sluggish. What’s nice is most of my issues can be fixed with early access updates. I’m leaving a thumbs up in hopes that Second Extinction will have its potential realized some day. Thanks for reading.

Really fun game that later added hidden personally identifiable data collection :(

To counter all the negatives right now, I wanted to state that I've been playing the game since it launched into Early Access. It's got a lot of hurdles at the moment- mostly bugs related to crashes, GFX and sound issues, as well as some issues with unlocking items / cosmetics / etc. (Plus, some dinosaurs like the Anky are a bit ... -too- difficult on solo,) That said, the core gameplay is amazing. The story so far is amazing, the gunplay, dinosaurs, etc... you get the picture. The base game is a lot of fun, and while its marred by its faults and bugs, the devs have repeatedly stated that they're working on it. I don't know why folks are calling it Shovelware, the devs had been releasing free updates every few months up until September when they decided they were going to hold on to all the next goodies until 1.0 Launch. It's important to note that once you purchase this game, everything in game is free to unlock and use, you just have to play to acquire. There are no MTX ((At least at the time of writing this. Whether that changes during 1.0 launch I cannot say.)) That being said, as many others have stated, and I myself did above: Great game, with a lot of flaws, but it's worth it. ((We're getting a new map in 1.0 too! So that's exciting.)) If you're hesitant, it's on sale until July 7th (at the time of writing this review,) for like, $10. I'd wait for a sale if you aren't sold on it but interested, otherwise any support is good support! --- This was very much an exhausted Ramble of a review, due to lack of sleep over the last couple days. That said, I saw "Mixed" and wanted to clear some stuff up as best I could. It's -very much- a rough around the edges game, but overall its a blast to play.

Avalanche Studios is trying to make a multiplayergame. The project is summarized under the name "shoebill". Better known as Second Extinction™

    What does this product do?

Since Avalanche has now come to the idea to hide their games behind a data paywall, produtcts are tied to a registration and online obligation. No Internet? No game. No registration data? Half game content. The game itself is more or less a data parasite. During the initializing your machine data is taken, before user consent and without agreement. In the case we agree the to the ingame policy, the whole stuff is activated. Avalanche is using their own tracking mechanics which are present in all their games, coupled with the supposed social component that is there for nothing but mandatory online mode. In this product, the service Microsoft Azure Playfab (Analytics) is added, which again connects telemetry with mandatory online behaviour and also provides the multiplayer servers. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2924992872 Compare the service with Epic Online Service (EOS) by Epic Games, Inc. It's the same pest. Mandatory online mode, tied with extensive telemetry. In addition they use Azure Cognitive Services (Text to Speech). Users should read their privacy agreements very carefully. Like Facebook and Amazon Alexa. It's special.

    Who is running the product

Avalanche Studios Group subdivision Second Extinction (again, don't forget the "™")

Where are the service providers located?

    <*>Avalanche Studios Group - Västgötagatan 5, 11827 Stockholm, Sweden <*>Microsoft Corporation - 1 Microsoft Way Redmond WA 98052-6399

    What data is collected?

Like in other Avalanche Games? Everything :> The only exception (compared to their other products) is the additional Playfab service in Second Extinction. I have to shorten the whole story because the logs fill many sites (let alone 140MB xml file of data for one short session) so i do not use detailed data records at this point. Everything in the game is provided with coordinates and is monitored so that the player position can be determined at any time. As example "x" : -565,0000000000000, "y" : 1171,000000000000, "z" : 300,0000000000000 This behaviour goes along with timestamps and of course your ip. The same behaviour can be found in other Avalanche products. No matter whether online or offline is played Active Heartbeat Callbacks A heartbeat query is sent to Avalanche every 1.4 minutes. This dataset includes FPS, GPU/CPU frametime, gamestate, is host (yes/no), max/min fps, network sessionid, num components/connections, peek bytes received/resend/sent, platform, playerlevel, projectname, running time, store, sessionuuid, user, userid, version, Coordinates Mission select Location, Missionname, Missionname Hash, Region, Coordinates Mission Progress Pulse Activities completed/discovered amount, Aggroed Dino and kill amount, difficulty, materials collected amount (augments, common, rare, uncommon), missionid, mission sessionid, network sessionid, objectives completed amount, platform, playercount, player damage tagen amount, player downed amount, playerlevel, player position (coordinates xyz), respawn amount, projectname, region, research collected amount, running time, sessionuuid, specials and specials killend amount, store, suspend length, time since mission start, user, userid, version Materials collected Picked up some dino poop/bone? Of course it's tracked. Location, MaterialID, Region, Research Award, Coordinates Killed Enemys Each event is tracked. Kill 20 Dinos? Means there are 20 single data sets that Avalanche gets withcharacterid, difficulty, damage type, enemy type, killed by player, method of death, missionid, mission sessionid, network sessionid, platform, playercount, playerlevel, region, runningtime, seasonid, sessionuuid, store, user, version, Corrdinates In Short, they get dozend of data packets each second by countless players about what they do, when they do it, where and with whom they do it. Even if these supposedly "social components" are not knowingly used. Player died Damage type, Enemy type, killed by self, killed by vehicle, killed by vehicle weapon, location, name hash, region, vehicleid, coordinates Damage Dealt damage dealt, missionid, network session, platform (e.g. win64), player level, player count, running time, sessionid, store (where we purchased e.g. steam), userid, product version (shoebill_delivery_win64_final_2237648) Mission Complete Location, Missionname, Missionname Hash, Region, Starsm, Coordinates

    Microsoft Playfab Analytics and Server

Character Inventory, Characterlist, Playerprofile, Playerstatistics, Titledata, AccountInfo, Userdata, UserInventory, Currency, Statistics, Constraints, Devicedata, Focusdata (tabbed out/in), last logintime, spend ingametime, lootboxes,Mission progress, Chat, Purchased Items,Currency, Prestige, XP, Last Lobby, Nameplate & Contract data, saved Missionstats/News, tracked weapons, tracking UUID, PlayfabID, Audio Codecs, Serverlist and more

    Summary

A summary of connections (including used multiplayer server) made by the game were prepared in an own entry (e.g. for blocklists like PI-hole or host) for Second Extinction. Same counts for other products by Avalanche. A company profile to Avalanche Studios was also created, in which interested people can get a small overview. Company profile for Microsoft Corporation is also up. At the end, Avalanche products are just there to collect data on a grand scale. The described behaviour is present in all their products and even if users only use the single player aspects are constantly tracker and spying active. The product is not recommended because Avalanche takes more than they are entitled and the privacy and data sovereignty of users is at risk. Other products of Avalance only limited, because of their subsequently implemented data paywall. After all, you can turn off the behavior in other games by blocking the addresses. You will find them on the linked sites. For Second Extinction, unfortunately, this does not work.

After Multiple "Full Release Coming" statements in 2022, and a future promise of "full release planned for 2023" that was posted back in november of 22, I can't realistically recommend this game to anyone. While it had great potential, the developers seem to have lost sight of their vision for this game AND their company. It would seem this is not their first foray into multiplayer co-op shooters that they seem to just drop. Ever heard of Generation Zero? That was one of theirs, and while an AMAZINGLY fun co op game with friends, it was just kinda jank at times. That was kinda the charm and frustration of it. But this developer doesn't care about it's fans, it's customers or it's games. Minimal hotfixes that barely work, multiple broken promises. it's just not fair to fans for the company to behave in this manner. Now they've moved on to some "ravenbound" game, with no mention of an attempt to finish Second Extinction. There's been no mention of finishing it for several months now and it's safe to say that they just don't care anymore. Next attempted cash cow. next dropped project? It seems like it's a pattern with these guys. I would recommend just staying away from anything made by systemic reaction or any of their subsidiaries, honestly. No more blind faith for these guys, we as the fans NEED to make an example and show them "show us worthwhile effort and we will show you an amazing fan base". But until that point, don't waste your time with this company or these games until they want to completely finish something. and DO NOT buy this game.

Was once a mod on the Discord for this game. No longer a mod. Probably a good thing since leaving a negative review for this game makes unable to be a mod for it. The game has had zero updates for over a year, the 1.0 release has been delayed multiple times for months, and is now delayed to an unknown date. This is all while the game breaks in several ways, and has multiple game breaking bugs. The group, Systemic Reaction, had trouble with a single game. I have no idea why they decided they should make more games with more teams instead of actually putting more people on the first game they made. The community manager is not great, and a good amount of the community will devdefend hard. I would say if the game actually worked as intended, then it would be worth it on a 90% sale, but it does not, so do not buy it. Unless the 1.0 release is near bug free with a large amount of content, this game will continue to decline.

If you want a TLDR: The devs abandoned this game, leaving it in a broken mess and moved on to yet another game that will never be finished. Here's the entire story so far... Sadly i can no longer recommend this game. What once had so much potential has now been abandoned by its greedy devs and left in a nearly unplayable state. The e.a. support was amazing and the "Transparency" between the company and community was also really good! However, after announcing the games full 1.0 release everything slowed to a crawl and eventually fell apart. With no reason as to why and out of what seemed like no where, the devs never released 1.0 and gave a half baked essay several DAYS after missing the updates launch. After this, they went completely dark. No news, updates, Q&A's, nothing! However, after months of staying quiet the company was excited to show us yet another new game that they will be releasing... As of this review, the devs have only told us that 1.0 "will release sometime in 2023" but they wont shut the hell up about this new rogue like. Its crazy how they did this with Generation Zero (another game that technically got its 1.0, but was abandoned shortly after never adding more content that was promised) and now they're doing this with second extinction. It just goes to show that these devs are just another EA clone and don't care about the community, they're here simply to make proof of concept games to make us smile for a bit and then move on when they feel like they want to scam a new community. Second extinction had so much potential, the characters, the guns, the map, and the combat all felt amazing, but sadly the game just isn't what it should be and it will never be what it could be.

It's really sad when you have a great idea and then after hyping it up, leave and do literally nothing with it. The few times I did get to play it with people, you could see the potential with it. However, the sheer lack of content drove me to stop playing it very early in it's "development" phase. TL;DR this title is abandonware at this point with zero updates in over a year and an "active" playerbase of 6.5 over the last 30 days. Stay away from it. What's sad is that these are the same developers which did Generation Zero, a game in and of itself that is leagues above this one. If you have to choose between the two, get Generation Zero instead.
