Early personal observations to help those curious: Pros: Fully supported on Steam Deck (no cursor) Various difficulty settings Save in menu AND autosave No issues with cross save between windows PC and steam deck default OS Excellent tutorial Opening all menus pauses game 66 creatures (more to come) Fast movement speed Cons: Everything is tiny on steam deck screen including font Time moves quickly, no option to change speed Pass out penalty (oversleeping) Stutter on Steam Deck Only the one character appearance (dlc please?) No bulk crafting (and slow) Flee useless, monsters don’t despawn and reenter battle So far so good, will update as I go.

Imagine if Stardew Valley, Pokémon, and Sea of Stars had a baby. Moonstone Island is that. This game ticks off all the boxes of a wholesome & cozy game, and after 2 hours of playtime I'm already hooked. This is definitely going to be a game which you can sink A LOT of hours into. And the best thing is, you can do it from a teeny tiny laptop not meant to play games on (speaking from experience). Exploration, farming, friendships & romance, mining, crafting, house decoration, this game has it all. One big question remains though: Does it have a fishing minigame?

I've only played 1.5 hours of Moonstone Island, but it is everything I have been looking for in this genre. There are definite inspirations from Stardew Valley, but it's also its own thing. You get to build a tent/house wherever you want at the start of the game. I love this much freedom! You can put down your house at the starting island or venture out and find some uncharted island to settle down in. By the way, the game is split up in a cool way. You start on an island with a town ( and I did build my house here just to be near the town npcs), but there are over 100 islands in the game and you can travel to them with a broom that you can eventually fix or just by building bridges you craft from stone and rock. So, the flow of the game is up to you - which direction do I head out in? What's waiting for me there??? The islands have dungeons that have loot in them and combat. Combat is a turn based affair like Pokemon, where you can exploit weaknesses to gain crushing victories. There are apparently over 100 monsters to recruit that you can bring on your adventure. There is also the normal gathering, crafting, building, smelting, fishing, mining - etc etc that this genre provides. It's a very satisfying loop in gameplay and had me hooked right away. There are a few little issues that I made a separate topic about, but I'm sure QOL things will be added by the devs in the near future. Music is also very soothing and perfectly fits the cozy vibe this game oozes constantly. Graphics are 2D in what I can only describe as looking a little but like Zelda Link to the Past in appearance. I love 2D spritework games so this is perfect for me. I have not played enough to get into the details of what else lies in store, but I can tell you that if you enjoy Stardew Valley or similar life sim games, and do not mind a moderate amount of combat added to the mix. then this is an easy recommend. So many games launch into early access and languish there for years, never to reach their potential. But here, we have a fully formed game, ready for you to dive into in a complete state. To the devs - great job and I can't wait to see what's added over time !

Moonstone Island is a baby of Pokémon, Spirited Away, Stardew Valley, and Across the Obelisk. Awesome game. Note: I will add more to this review as I didn't have the opportunity to play the game longer. What I love about this game: - Pixel Arts *chef's kiss* - Building relationships with townies - Flying with a broom - Exploration - Rent System if you don't have your own place - Choice of spirits - Environment & Buildings *chef's kiss* Concern: - Xbox controller inputs, this is better with a keyboard and a mouse I prefer playing a single player game with my xbox controller. It didn't feel really smooth on Moonstone Island. The button assignments in the game weren't as intuitive as I expected, which led to some frustration. I constantly had to think about which buttons to press, making it difficult to perform actions smoothly. While I might eventually get the hang of it with more playtime, it becomes a problem if I decide to take a break and come back later. I would have to retrain my muscle memory all over again. This inconsistency in controls adds to the pain points of the user experience, so it would be beneficial if the developers could address this issue promptly.

Card combat system can feel a bit flawed early game since if you have a lower level spirit with your decently leveled spirit, it just feels like youre mixing your good cards with trash ones from the low level spirit. I recommend leveling up everyone somewhat evenly if you can to mitigate this cause once you have an even team, the synergies between spirits feel really good to use which makes combat fun. I wish animations was juuust a touch faster, 1.1x maybe? I also wish when you fish you dont automatically face down cause I sometimes waste stamina by using the fishing rod on the ground. Story is very light hearted and starts off really cute. NPCs dialogue start off a bit too flirty even when you just met them and they barely even have half a heart in romance. First 2 hours of the game is somewhat slow but I like how you can immediately do your own thing right after the tutorial and the game doesnt hold your hand anymore after it. It makes it feel more immersive and adventure feels more rewarding. Highly recommend if you want a chill game that has combat like pokemon mixed with some card RNG with gameplay loop of farming, romancing, and adventure. My only cons about the game maybe is the art of the NPCs. I wish it was a bit more cute and anime. Less western-retro-ish. I also wish there was a character creator too.

Game that seems to try to harmonise farming sim, exploration and pokemon but does each system very poorly that gets in the way of each other. Also glaring balancing issues One of the selling point was the pet collection and battle part but the system is gated behind massive rare resources to have more than 3, and additional captures past 3 is immediately thrown away with no selection for you to choose which one to release instead. This should not be a system this early in the game. Farming earns so little money, you best be just fishing as it pays much more and uses less energy without using resources. Time is a major issue for exploration as well. If you are exploring and unlocking new areas, you will not be able to do anything else in the day.

This game lacks any real goals or objectives. It's not quite a farming sim, not quite a dating sim, not quite anything. You can do all those things, but they don't functionally achieve anything. The player has no identity or self-expression, the NPCs indicate that you're an alchemist, but none of them know what that is. All actions seem excessively drawn out with no intent as well, you do the action, see the animation and then the game pauses a couple seconds for you to confirm. The target randomly will switch when hammering rocks because they're the same distance and it can't figure out how to react, not because input altered anything. This is just is lacking so much polish and that looks to be because meeting a release date they set themselves. There's also a peculiar progression system in place. There's no compass that really tells you how to actually progress, just vague ideas of it. Skills linked by a swirl lock others off in ways that just don't make a lot of sense. (Extra experience or easier taming? Those aren't linked traits, no reason for them to compete.) The quest to unlock the barn so you can have more than 3 monsters, requires you to catch a monster. So, you're not "allowed" more than 2 monsters until that happens. (You can, but have to let one go.) Also the game says you can't catch that monster until you have a specific skill that's locked behind invisible progress and no indicator on how to progress that bar. The creatures are neat, the character art feels off heavily though. Good overall character composition with manga baby face slapped on every character. The card combat is okay, lacks some balance for sure though, landslide wins or losses and no inbetween. Just feels generic. It lacks enough direction that I can't recommend it at this time. If you like this style of game, take a look though, probably will vibe more with certain people more than it does me. Seems rushed. If their first update fixes enough of this, then I'll revisit this review for sure. Gonna keep playing, maybe it'll click, I don't think it will though.

Fun stardew/pokemon hybrid + Fun creature collector combat with slay the spire type card mechanics + Team building is fun and interesting + Buildling and resource gathering is pretty standard but well implemented + Overworld pixel art is consistently good - Character portraits and personalities can be a bit rough - Needing to maintain boxed spirits is annoying, and the resource to avoid this is limited - Bit of a weird disconnect between your character being written as a kid and the game being a dating sim - Dungeons and islands can be a bit repetitive Stuff I would like to see: Multiplayer! Both a battle/trading option, pokemon style, and/or a stardew valley style option with multiple players in a world could be pretty great. Spirits having both a combat and noncombat ability instead of one or the other. It's annoying to switch between parties depending on which half of the game you're doing and would be cool to feel like the guys who are helping you win fights are also helping you interact. More island variety/more unique scripted encounters on the islands. The core loop is good but the islands don't feel unique since they just have different spawns. Better ways to grind to make the team you want - maybe other alchemists you could fight against that won't end the day if you lose.

Cool concept but poor execution. You may think that 1.5 hours is too short of a time to make a judgement but I assure you it's not. This game isn't that deep and an arbitrary amount of time isn't necessary to engage with most of what's on offer here. The Good: - Good graphics and music. - Interesting concept where the game tries to combine elements of farm/life sims, creature collectors, card battlers, and Zelda-like dungeons. The Bad: - This game tries to be wholesome and cozy but it fails, in my opinion, do to the combination of a clock that moves too quickly and a stamina bar. If you're going to have a fast moving clock, get rid of the stamina bar or reduce the number of actions that consume stamina. The clock is enough of a limitation. - The writing isn't great which makes the NPCs uninteresting. It's full of cookie cutter tropes. - The NPC interaction system boils down to choosing one of 3 interactions (chat, joke, or flirt) which rely on RNG. There's no dialog associated with any of these choices. It's just the number goes up or down. It feels robotic and not at all like human interaction. - Bugs exist that will soft lock your game thus forcing you to alt f4 and you lose the progress you made that day. Look at the bug reports if you're interested in what those bugs are. - Considering this game just came out two days ago and it's "sink or swim" time, you would think that the devs would be more responsive to bug reports and hot fixes would be happening multiple times a day or, at the very least, daily. Instead they seem to be more interested in celebrating Moonstone Island as if it's perfect and focusing on merchandising...for a two day old game. Worrying about a MakeShip collaboration instead of hot fixes feels grimy. - Released on day 1 with a paid DLC that's just a few cosmetic items. For a game that already costs more than SDV and offers far less in terms of customization, NPC interactions, and NPCs with complexity, it's not a good look. Whether or not Moonstone Island is worth your money is up to you. I'm on the fence but leaning towards "no" unless some serious hot fixes come out quickly and options are added to either increase day length or disable the stamina bar. I could overlook the average writing (I'm being generous by calling it average), bugs, and shallow customization if hot fixes were incoming, customization options were being added, or the price was lower. As it stands, it very much looks like the developers are trying to cash in on the cuteness of this game before people realize the content is as deep as a puddle. Edit: They finally squashed some bugs two days after release, about an hour ago as of writing this edit. I still stand by my statements regarding this game.
