Recommended only on sale, due to a couple fundamental problems with this game. First, if you're going to be a kids game, be a kids game. I appreciate some over-their-head dialogue here and there, but frequently the character interactions are so philosophical (as advertised in the game description) that I'd feel awkward watching young people play this. Are robots really just slaves? A fair question, but I think it narrows the audience. Second, puzzles can't be consistently reset despite being pointed out explicitly to the developer. This is mainly an issue with a puzzle that uses an ice block (which has caused some players to abandon the game entirely), although I observed several other puzzles also not resetting correctly when re-zoning per dev's instructions. Other minor issues like occasional typos, wild collision bugs, and lack of cloud saves you can probably look the other way on, but in the end I was disappointed this game wasn't great. I really liked the relatively easy puzzles but not that they can break. I liked the way that you unlock "letters" toward optional game lore but not the typos. I liked the characters and wanted to learn more about them and I liked all the adorable costumes you could unlock for Yono, but the characters ended up totally flat and you sometimes had to return to earlier vendors to switch back to costumes you purchased. For every positive here there's a negative, so best I'd only recommend this when on sale.

I want to praise this game, but there are some design choices that make this game really irritating to play. I can see that the devs tried hard on this game and wanted to pay homage to several action/adventure titles, while keeping their own personality and flair; I appreciate that. Now, I first started playing with keyboard and mouse, which made the game pretty clunky. Yono the Elephant is tricky to position right with just the four directional keys, so I recommend playing with a controller if you can. It helps a little bit, but not much. Unfortunately, the hit detection in this game and some of the hitboxes are really poorly programmed form what I've noticed, which makes hitting pots, headbutting shelves and attacking enemies really annoying. Yono is such a large entity compared to his surroundings, so if you walk along any bridges or short walkways, you have to be so careful. Sometimes, the armoured rat enemies will be positioned right where there are traps, so if you miss an attack because of poor hit detection (like my issues), you will die over and over again. My next complaint is a tiny one compared to everything else, but it got on my nerves nonetheless. There is so much dialogue in this game. SO MUCH! If you really like to read, then go ahead, but the story kind of felt dry to me, so I just kept skipping and skipping and skipping the dialogue whenever it showed up, which made a certain city's fetch quest bonanza pretty annoying at first. My third and final complaint is what made me uninstall the game. Woolly Mountain! There is an ice block puzzle (no one likes ice block puzzles) and, if you do it wrong, you get softlocked. Apparently, if you leave and come back, some puzzles reset themselves and this is supposed to be one of them, but there's a bug. People have tried to come up with fixes and I've tried a couple of them, but they didn't work. The only one I haven't tried requires you to go into the game files and change some things, but I'd rather not risk breaking the game further. All in all, this game is charming and there was some real effort here, but it just lacks the right proportions and programming to iron out all the kinks. If you really want to play it, I recommend buying it on a sale like I did, but if I'm gonna get softlocked so late in the game, I wouldn't want to pay full price for this.

When the world find itself at the crossroad and the tension is slowly growing among the people, it's a high time for its divine protector to appear. Celestial elephant Yono is sent upon this world to help the people find balance and lead them into a peaceful and prosperous times. But as Yono is just a small, young elephant it's hard for him to see how he could help anyone. With newfound friends he travels around the world, meets its inhabitants, learns about their hardships and dreams… after all, it's not about solving their problems for them, but more about accompanying them through their life. And Yono has still time to search for his purpose on this word before he becomes a full fledged celestial protector. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2897520714 Yono and the Celestial Elephants is very charming, relaxing game. Playing as this small blue elephant is probably one of the cutest things I have ever seen. Running around or splashing water from my trunk always brought a big smile on my face! Also can't forget about the fact that Yono doesn't have hands, so if you take some items you carry it on your head and as you move the item jumps on it. :D Money that you collect can be spent on changing your appearance and there are a lot of possibilities! There are three main locations with sub-locations that connect them. You open a quick travel after you successfully go through, so you don't have to walk through them again. But if you have missed a collectible core (that raises your health) you can of course explore some more, but I have usually collected everything without any problem. Another thing you will collect are letters, with enough of them you can restore ancient tomes and learn about your celestial predecessors and their deeds on this world. I have enjoyed reading about them! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2898361060 Graphics are cute and colorful, the music is cheerful and fits the game well. As for gameplay I'd say it's a 3D sokoban. Most of the time you are required to push some box on a specific place for you to be able to proceed. Every location adds something new - like ice cubes, balloons, chili peppers etc. Most of the puzzles were pretty straightforward, some required a little bit of trying, but the overall difficulty is easy, which is fine as it doesn't disturb the relaxing atmosphere. There is also a little bit of fighting with simple enemies (snakes, rat bandits) and a Boss fight awaits you at the end of each location - you always need a right tactic on them which can be hard to realize (I look at you Dog), but they are overall fun. I had some problems with controls (played on keyboard) and sometimes it was hard to position on the exact spot required in some moments (when splashing water etc.), but it wasn't any serious game breaking element. I have encountered a bug (?) when I have solved a puzzle in the wrong way and leaving the screen didn’t reset it. Loading up solved it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2899894961 I have really liked Yono and the Celestial Elephants. It's cute, funny and heartwarming, if you want to cheer up then this is the perfect game for you. I'd say it's great for the younger audience, but even if you are far beyond this age range you can quite enjoy it. I know I did. :)

It's oddly tedious to play, partly because of the dodgy keyboard controls that I shouldn't have been using (although ... refer to footnote), but mostly because the game doesn't really have an identity of it's own gameplay-wise. It's got puzzles, block pushing and lever pulling ones. It's got combat, very standard and easy combat. And it's got some dialogue that while occasionally entertaining isn't enough to really justify playing this when I still haven't read Nausicaa. Footnote: Really devs, if you just let us use the Q and E keys to turn 45 degrees the keyboard controls would be fine. Or even if you just widened the window for releasing two directional keys at once. Or maybe they'd have worked fine if I used the lock-on feature. I guess we'll never know.

Seeing only one review for Yono, and considering it wasn't from a purchased-through-Steam copy, I figured I'd leave my thoughts as a normal buyer. I am just about an hour into the game and I'll update my review if I have any major reason as I go. Yono oozes charm from the moment you launch the game. The menu is colorful and the short intro sequence is well done. There aren't many settings to adjust, but it all worked right out of the gate with my DS4 controller. The game does a good job walking you through the mechanics, and right as I thought it was at risk of annoying me with help I was set off on my own to find my way. This would be a great game for kids. It's colorful, it's friendly and at no point has it been frustrating or unfair. I'm playing it at a relaxed pace and am enjoying exploring and interacting with whatever I notice in the moment. At an hour of gameplay I've just reached the second city, and if I'm paying attention I'd guess I'm about 20 percent through what I know about. If you plan on rushing through the game I don't think there's going to be enough to justify the full price, but if you're like me you'll get more than your money's worth. As far as challenge goes, I figured the puzzles would be a breeze but I managed to get caught in a loop early on because I didn't realize there were two paths through a section. Now I'm already wondering if I missed earlier optional routes. There is a definite potential for depth. In summary, if you're looking for a relaxing and fun game that will cheer you up, but isn't difficult, this is a solid purchase for the price.

"Yono" is very much on the easy side, which might be boring to some people. That said, it's also very charming and stylish. Music is well done, story and (some) sidequests offer more depth then is readily apparent by looking at the game and, well, Yono is ridiculously cute. Took me about 3,5 hours to fully complete (max health upgrades, all lore pages filled), and I enjoyed it the whole way. Specs are kind of a moot point. It will run on a toaster. There are some bugs here and there. I clipped through objects a few times, and even had a boss run off through a wall and disappear, forcing a reload. Serious glitches like that are relatively few and far between though, so it should be mostly fine.

The game's charming. Starts off with easy puzzles and then introduces new elements every now and then to gradually increase the difficulty and keep things fresh - late-game puzzles are pretty challenging. The only remarks I have are: * If running in full-screen mode, the game uses the monitor where the taskbar is rather than the primary one. This is slightly unusual so I've been playing it in windowed mode instead. * Trading card settings could use a look - I was able to complete the game with all heart containers and all lore unlocks while still having 2 card drops remaining. * The elephant's bounding box might be a tiny bit too big - you can't rotate towards a barrell while standing between two of these - the elephant "squeezes out". I think it's for the same reason that lining up between a barrell and a movable block and then head-butting the block sends the elephant into the air. Similarly, you can't walk between a block and away-facing fence - the elephant just doesn't fit in there. * Related to above (physics!) it is possible to solve a number of puzzles in an unintended way (e.g. push a vase next to a block and carefully climb on top of it instead of doing what you're meant to), although I've find this mildly entertaining to be honest.

There's two major things to judge this game on, gameplay and atmosphere. Both of them are for babies, but like, mentally advanced babies. Gameplay consists of moving from screen to screen, each screen consisting of a self-contained puzzle of sorts. Puzzles consist of box-pushing and "use metaphorical key X in metaphorical lock Y so that you can access literal key A to open literal lock B". Puzzles kinda sorta get more complex as the game goes on, but solving them always follows this game general line of thought, and usually there's only one functional action you can take in any given puzzle at any given time, so even if you can't logic it out ahead of time, you can generally stumble your way through it with enough time investment. To put it another way, puzzles require the same general type of deductive thinking as puzzles in something like The Talos Principle, except you wouldn't give the Talos Principle to a six-year-old, you would give them Yono so that they're ready to play Talos Principle when they're a little older. Regarding the game's atmosphere, you can probably tell from the video that everything in the game is adorable, and that generally follows along with the story where nothing particularly dire ever happens. I mean, threats to world peace or whatever, but not anything more extreme than you would see on a Nickelodeon cartoon. But what's weird about this game is that a lot of the characters you talk to will ponder on life philosophy. Like, you have cartoon skeletons questioning the meaning of a life based on material goods, and you have cartoon robots wondering if life is more or less "free" whether you are born with a given purpose or without one. It's nothing revolutionary or anything, but it goes pretty deep for a game that's clearly written for a younger audience. So once again, I have to come back around to saying "It's like The Talos Principle, but for babies." Will adults like it? Well... Personally, I thought the gameplay was tedious after a while. There was never any question to what direction the story was going, either, though I was generally wondering what weird thing the next random NPC was going to talk about. I guess it comes down to how cute you think that elephant is. It's a REALLY cute elephant.

(I finished this game on the Switch, but bought the PC version to support the dev because I liked it -- so, low play time here) What a neat game! For its genre, I think it was just about perfect -- well-done and snappy in the main story and side quests, with a little bit of challenge in places but not so much that a kid couldn't manage, and with very few draggy parts. It took me about 4 hours to fully complete. It doesn't hurt that the art and sound design (so many trumpetings) are ridiculously cute, too. Just a really all-around nice game. Minor issues: - I had a couple bugs relating to item placement -- odd clipping and so on. Nothing too bad. - The PC version appears to have somewhat limited resolution options, and tops out at 1080P on my 1440P monitor.

How can a game so short feel so tedious at times? Yono is an undeniably cute game, and I love watching your baby elephant avatar (in every sense of the word) cavort around in various skins and costumes. The writing is at times thoughtful and thought-provoking, but the gameplay loop itself is sorely lacking. Combat is an unrewarding chore, and the puzzles, while inventive at times, become repetitive all too quickly. The biggest draw of the game is that you get to play a baby elepehant, and in that, it delivers. But everything else is, unfortunately, nothing to trumpet about. Buy it when it's peanuts.
