This game is being downvoted by many because people can't change resolution in Options menu or just trying it on their laptops. The game boots at 4k res so be sure to change that as I guess it is not optimized for 4k yet. Runs great for me (so far) other than few crashes in Steel Cage matches, stable 60 fps no performance issues at 1080p. Using PS4 controller with a wire, no emulator needed thanks to official Steam compatibility. Tried out multiple matches no lag so far, though the entrances are locked at 30 fps but not gonna lose sleep over it. Good job 2K. Most fun WWE game since Here Comes The Pain. i5 4570 8GB RAM GTX 970
Gameplay and Mechanics
This game has confused controls. No, not confusing; I do in fact mean confused. -Timing for reversals is inconsistant. It would say "too early" when I'm sure I pressed to late, say "too late" when I know for a fact that I pressed too early, or give me no response at all and fail the reversal. Hell, there are even times when I would flat out NOT do anything and it would lead to a successful reversal. -Button mapping is miserable. Now, looking at the control scheme and the move set up, in theory it is actually well thought out and feels good. Ability to move from a strike to a grapple to a finisher to what have you is smooth and nothing feels like it's getting in the way of itself... That is however, if it feels like working. Often times, I'd try to perform some kind of strike, only for my character to poorly attempt a finisher or something else not even remotely close to the button combination I pressed. And the rest of the time, he would just stand there and not do anything. Very rarely would he perform the actions I input. -The tutorial is sparse. If you are a newcomer to the series, or this is the first game you played in a long time in the WWE line up, then be prepared to look at the input menu A LOT. Don't get me wrong, the tutorial prompts come up when contextually appropriate. Once you complete that tutorial successful (and sometimes not even that) that's all you get. There is no mode to walk you through the gameplay so you know you have it down. It tosses you in, gives you some pointers, and that's it. -The menus have input lag. I've done some digging and thankfully this is a problem that only myself and a handful of others are experiencing, but come on. It's a menu. You press up, an sometimes it might take a second to actually register. Want to make a small adjustment to some option with a slider? TOO BAD, IT'S ALL OR NOTHING! -Everything feels off. This is because this game is taking a bit more of a "simulation" approach than previous titles. There's nothing wrong with that, but momentum is weird, hits feel like they don't connect as hard as they should, throws feel slower and more awkward. Again, everything just feels off. Like a little too fast, or a little too slow, or too heavy or light. It's always something. -MyCareer is broken as hell. Going into my Week 1 match, the fight started; I got tossed out of the ring pretty damn early; fade to black; I won?!?! I am by no means a good player at this game, so I know when I get my ass kicked. Even worse is when the match starts and I take a few steps towards my oppenent. Neither of us do anything, then suddenly fade to black. I won again.... Okay??? -If MyCareer breaks then a quick match might just break too, apparently. With the above problem, I just assumed it was for "story telling purposes" or some such. I got made and decided to just play a quick 1v1 from the main menu. The game loaded up, everyone had their shnazzy intros, aaaaaaand fade to black. I won........
Content
There's a lot to have in this game. I'll give it that. -MyPlayer customization is quite deep. You have a lot of options to choose from for body, hair, clothing, behaviour, moveset, and a whole lot more. And that's before everything is even unlocked! 2k18 brings a lot of quirky goodness that everyone will love. If you want to make that freakish Smurf Danny Devito/Goku hybrid you've always dreamed of, you have the freedom. -There's a bit of fun distraction in MyCareer. I don't mean the bad kind, but all the little extra fillings that you can do in between matches. You can talk to other characters and learn more about the current events of the game, choose from multiple matches to go into, do a photo op for your Goku Devito and whatnot. It's not a lot, but it's nice. -There are a lot of things to do besides playing with Goku Devito. Personally, I haven't played in online yet, but even so there is a lot to do in the game. There's a rather good list of matchs from the main menu as well as the TLC line within the MyPlayer tab. Don't ask much about it from me though, because I mostly just played the quick matches and MyCareer so far.
Graphics
Oh boy, this is a fun one. -TURN DOWN YOUR RESOLUTION!! Nothing more than 1920x1080. The game likes to boot in 4k and it's not optimized for it. The graphics options are a bit thin, so good luck because the game doesn't seemed to be optimized for any resolution at all. -It looks nice, but hitting that photorealism. In this day in age, high quality graphics is to be expected. The problem is that it doesn't look any better than the mildly cartoonish appearance of before and opts for even more realistic textures. It all ends up looking rather off putting, especially when you notice that everyone looks wet. And no, turning down the "body oil" option for your wrestler won't make them look any less wet. -Animations are snappy and awkward, and the intense motion blur doesn't help. It's kind of jarring to see your Goku Devito sitting down and moping to suddenly (and without much transition) stand up, throwing a punch as the cloth physics of his suit start flailing about not knowing what to do. -Animations straight up break occassionally. Granted, it's rare.... But every so often, it's fun seeing Goku Devito's arm go through his torso as his head reenacts the characters from ME:A. I wish I had some way to have recorded them. Would've been fun to put on youtube. -EVERYTHING CLIPS IN EVERYTHING. Now, I get it. The geometry of a model won't always line up with its collission, but when I see Fandango standing inside the ref, who in turn has the ropes going through him, then I supsect something is wrong.
Overall
This game has a lot of work put into some places, but the time put in some aspects shows in the lack of time put into others. This game is confusing to play, confusing to run, and confusing to operate. I want to like this game, honest. But too much is wrong with it. I'm sorry Goku Devito, but I'm not going to recommend this.

This game is definitely not worth your money! Positives: + Nicer graphics than previous WWE 2K games + Promo engine improved (this time it is actually possible to get the promo to full points without much guessing) Negatives: - MyCareer is just too buggy, and feels like it has not been tested at all. (too many, that make progress difficult or impossible). Storyline wise, it is some sort of improvement over 2k17, but still feels very dissapointing. - Loot boxes (aww you wanted that specific move for your finisher, well goodluck grinding for a random chance of getting it, oh and to make it more "fun" we will not show what move you unlocked so you better go back to other menu, wait on a loading screen, then select another menu and wait on another loading screen) - Loading screens. (there are too many of them, especially in MyCareer) - Universe Mode seems to be buggier than in 2K17 (In SmackDown Live fought against AJ Styles with Randy Orton, Randy won, then a cutscene started of Brock Lesnar attacking John Cena in the ring. Both of them are on RAW, why in the world this would even play) - GRIND for VC. It is quite difficult to attain big ammounts of VC to unlock anything in MyCareer or Universe (if you don't have the accelerator.). A single match of about 3.5 stars will give you 400VC, if you win, if you lose about 80VC. Just to level up your character you have to spend 1000VC minimum. - Bugs - Random crashes - Bugs in Universe or MyCareer that make the game crash even more - Prompts for reversals are out of sync. - Pinfal mini-game has some sort of random delay between pressing the button and it registering in game. (sometimes it happens as soon as you press it, other times it is half a second late) - Promos are written badly. They are very generic, and do not suit characters at all. - "Promo engine". Even though I put this as a plus because it is better than 2K17, it is still quite horrific, it doesn't make any sense. - Showcase mode is still not present in the game (maybe it will be added through DLC again...) - Performance issues. Random frame drops, very big frame drop when camera goes to split-screen mode (I know it is supposed to go to 30FPS, but it goes to 20 or sometimes even 15fps). - Can't switch between two or more monitors (have to drag game window to another monitor, before it goes full-screen)

WWE 2k18 is a typical 2k-game: One step in the right direction, two steps back, one random hop somewhere else and please, if you don't like where you land, you gotta pay to move again. On one hand, they really did try their best with some of the actual gameplay. Aleister Black, Bobby Roode, Triple H, Ambrose, Nakamura - they all look incredibly good and you can feel that somebody put not just good work, but actual heartblood in there. However, the game lacks so much else and throws away sooo much potential, it's almost funny if it wasn't so sad. Yes, the backstage area is a bit bigger - but it's still just the same corridor, and still a smaller era than back in PS2-days. Yes, we got the biggest roster again - but who needs 5 Stings instead of several of the actual interesting stars (Heavy Machinery? Street Prophets? Velveteen Dream? Liv Morgan? The Singh-brothers? Even Ellsworth? Nah screw 'em all, but hey, who doesn't want to play as the Van Erichs or the Natural Disasters?). Yes, we get 8-man-matches. Now, Survivor Series Matches are 10-Man-Matches, and we still miss several other types of matches, but at least now we can replay all those great directionless 4-on-4-tagteam-matches that we all love so dearly, Playah! Yes, career-mode is back - but you don't really "choose" anything resembling a career. In fact, the game is so broken, they even screw up the little "stories" you try to create for yourself. Example? Ok, here we go, a little excerpt from my actual gameplay: You go to call out the Big Show (why? Because your character decides so on his own, for whatever reason). While doing the promo, Roman Reigns comes out. Why, because he's the Big Show with a wig, obviously. After the promo, which you friggin RULE (by restarting the promo again and again ... not by using simple logic, because the promo is an incoherent mess of barely connected thoughts and cookie-cutter-insults anyway), people comment how you totally OWNED Samoa Joe (why, because he ate Roman "the Big Dog Show" Reigns, obviously). Then, the next week, you face Konnor 1 on 1 - but before your match, you get ambushed by Seth Rollins, because he's p***ed at your promo from last week (... obviously!). This will culminate at the next PPV, where you face Finn Balor, because, at this point, why the f*** not? The actual worst part about this? The game loads the Backstage Era. You move from the parking lot to the production era. On the way you can talk with random people. It doesn't matter if you do or don't, because they say random BS anyway (yes Asuka, you could eat several Pizzas right now. How cool is that? Yes Brock, i'm really ready for tonight. Yes Bayley, you SHOULD take note at my promos, because yours kinda suck, ... and so on..). Anyway, some production-guy spouts a two liner at you ala "go show em what you got!". Then the game looaads. You cut a nonsense-promo. The game loooaaads the backstage era. Again. You talk to the production guy, again. He wants you to go see Renee. Ok. You go to Renee (who at least looks human now. Yay!). The game looooaaaads, because obviously giving Renee one out of two answers (non consequential answers that is) is load-heavy. Then the game loooooaaaaads the backstage era. AGAIN. You go to the parking lot and get your car. You're finished for this week. The game looooooaaaaaads and you are in the parking lot again. You walk'n'talk with the production guy again, have a very short loooooooaaaaaaading-screen, cut a promo and then ....... repeat ad infinitum. It's LoadingScreen 2k18! And you sit there, wondering if anybody from game-design actually played that mess and why these people hate fun. Now, all of that would still be entertaining in a trainwreck-kind of manner ... if it wasn't for the incredible individuality the game promises you. BE LIKE NO ONE! is the title. It's in the add, it's in the game. So naturally, when you create a wrestler, you choose a pre-made class, which decides which moves you can or can't use, and what abilities/skills you can buy. Huh. High flyer able to do a piledriver, powerslam or omega driver? Nope. Giant who can do Coast2Coast? Ha! Powerhouse who can just even climb the turnbuckle? Forget it, no powerhouse EVER does that! (to clarify: That means that you can't even recreate several of the REAL and ACTUAL wrestlers on the roster!). These classes and your weight also determine your attributes. You will not exceed 91 points and will always lack in at least one fundamental field, no matter what (because f*** you, that's why). Anyway, then you get to create your guy - and you can't. Because it's locked. Because you need to buy lootboxes to unlock EVERYTHING, including basic content, fun and your will to live. Want that facepaint of Sting because 5 Stings are just not enough for you? Or a specific move that is totally cool and exotic like ... chokeslam02 (oh comon...) ? Or want to wear Darren Youngs underwear because you are really really weird and random, almost ... LIKE NO ONE? Well, tough sh!t son. You are not like no one, you are a nobody. For every match, you get 200 to 400 credits. For 2500, 5000 or 10.000 credits, you can buy lootboxes. And then you pray that there's finally something else inside than just Chris Jericho's boots 01 for the 12th time. And it is.... a booster for your next match (only for online-gaming. Because of course, who doesn't want to play this mess online?), Titus O'Neal underwear (... i don't even .. just why?), Powermove 18 (..ok), mustaches06 (... finally i can look like my favourite stupid anime character. Hooray. *sigh*) aaaand ... no, not Chris Jericho's boots01, but 800 credits! Ha! Sweeerved! It's a grind beyond stupid. It's not even next level stupid. It's typical WWE-stupid. And no fun whatsoever. Personally, i went ahead and edited a few numbers and gave myself a metric f***ton of credits. Opened ca. 80 lootboxes - and still didn't get the stuff i wanted (but hey, they repay me 200 credits in return whenever i get Chris Jericho's boots01 now .. so that's something, right?). It's mind numbingly boring and idiotic. And the worst? It's so goddamn obvious that they want to 'ease' us into next year's release featuring lootboxes you can buy for real money .. it's so glaringly obvious, Roman Reign's push was subtle in comparison. Here's to hope that Belgium pushes the ban on this loot-system and the EU follows suit. Maybe then they will remember that fun content is more important than a cash grab. Last but not least, i want to personally vote for the guy who chooses the Soundtrack for WWE games to be fired. Kanye, Rap and HipHop, is one thing. Country music (who would even listed to this sh!t?!?) is a whole different beast. But who in their right mind decided that Kid Rock singing about being high would be a good fit for a WWE game? Or any game that's not GTA, Saint Rows or the like? At least we got the old classic by Disturbed (censored, of course, because America is totally the land of the free... hah), but you're still better of just muting the music completely. All in all, i see barely any improvement to last year, a slightly updated roster aside - but several wrong directions this series is taking all at once. In this incarnation, the only fitting description is "wasted potential and bad decisions". So in a way, this is the perfect game for you, if you want that special WWE feeling....

WWE2k18 does a good job of hammering out some wrestling mechanics that are solid. However, it needs some help in other areas for sure. The major issues with the game are the MyCareer and to a lesser extent Universe mode. MyCareer is terrible this year. First, there is no way to import or export MyPlayer created wrestlers. MyCareer requires a created wrestler, so you can't play it as a default WWE star at all. Second, if you make a wrestler in free play you cannot import that wrestler for use, and must make a new MyPlayer CAS. Third, if you make a wrestler in MyPlayer it only works in MyCareer, it cannot be exported to Universe mode or Free Play. This is obnoxious. Sadly creating your wrestler in MyPlayer is entirely subject to loot box RNG as the overwhelming majority of moves, costume pieces, etc are locked behind the loot box system. Lastly there is way too much pointless walking around in the backstage area of MyCareer and a ton of deadspace that doesn't meaningfully improve on your game play experience. For example, you must walk to and from a security guard to get into/out of your car every night that you perform. This is just a frustrating waste of player time. It might be different if you could get into confrontations and brawls in the backstage, but its mostly just a bunch of random wwe stars milling about aimlessly, and annoying WWE employees who stalk the main hallways getting in your way. The interactions you can have are pretty lame, just little custscenes with overlay text, really boring and pointless. It had me wishing for the single locker-room screen to manage this stuff from, just getting phone calls and texts to advance storylines like I recall from a previous WWE game. MyCareer mode can be considered a total failure in this year's version of the game. In Universe mode there needs to be a way to focus it more on your wrestler, created or stock. As it is, there is way too much show management and not enough focus on in ring action. Most of it concerning wrestlers and rivalries that just waste the player's time with a bunch of fiddly micromanagement that will never be of importance to what their wrestler is doing. Free Play is the only mode I found to be consistently fun to play, especially with the addition of match creation. Match creation is awesome, I would just ask for even more customization options here otherwise well done 2K here. Maybe look into adding back create a finisher and we'll be in good shape. Also I must give credit to 2K for making moves feel much more impactful this year. In all modes, there are still far to many load screens, splash screens, etc. All breaking up gameplay flow and taking away from time actually in the ring playing the game. The promo system is also just bad. I messed with it for awhile, and its just not fun or entertaining. Just being text overlays, which often don't match up with what you thought you were trying to say just did nothing for me. Also the wrestler's gestures during promos seemed bizarre, I mean Brock Lesnar dancing around during a promo (Hell Brock even having a promo that isn't cut by Paul Heyman!) was silly. This whole mechanic needs to be scrapped and redesigned. There are some issues with mechanics and animations, bugs etc. In general it feels like the ring needs to be bigger. Irish whip rebound grapples are a bit tough to consistently pull off because there is so little space in the ring. Throwing opponents off hell in a cells, entrance ramps, tops of big rigs has a stilted delay to it that messes up the flow. Hell in a cell in general is a bit of a mess. The cage is too close to the announcer tables, and throwing guys off the top isn't as smooth as it could be. Doing moves through the center of the cell panels is basically non-existent. I do like the return of total control type moves, but I missed not having a chokeslam position. Perhaps in the future, offer a selection of total control move positions that a player can select in move-set creation? That said, it would also be nice if moves other than these could throw opponents off things and over ropes in a more organic fashion as well. Bugs, the game has a ton, some highly debilitating, that prevent the game from even launching for some people, many that have required restarting a match because of severe animation glitches or wrestlers becoming stuck in the walls or outright falling through out of the play area. These significantly hurt the game overall, because they are more serious than anything else, when they mean a customer cannot even play the game they've bought. Online, I own this on PC, so I don't know how it is on consoles, but wait times for matches are so long I have never mustered the patience to really play online, so I can't speak further on it. Sadly, as much as I love WWE video games, this year's offering, with the unforgiveably bad MyCareer mode design and loot box shenanigans, I cannot recommend this as I wish I could. There is fun to be had if you aren't affected too badly by bugs, bothered by the same things I am, or are fine playing in only one maybe two of the available modes, otherwise its a disappointment over previous games despite any improvements made to the mechanics. Sadly even those get marred because for anything 2K made better, some other choices were made that made the game worse imo. So its a net backstep overall. I am a diehard wrestling fan, so I am able to find a way to make it fun despite all the missteps, but I cannot recommend this in general to folks. 2K is close, as a fan of these games, I can see the potential for a very good game just out of reach, but out of reach it remains and I can only hope 2K improves for WWE2K19, because it isn't there yet.

Ok, another year has come and gone. Last year I wrote a review of WWE:2K17 and it was my first year buying a WWE game from the 2K franchise. I was pretty happy with it. If you havent read it somewhere I gave it a 7/10, which is pretty modest in my opinion. This year 2k18 was hyped up beyond belief and I am afraid I cannot give as kind of a review to this game that I so desperately wanted. So I am going to go through a fairly lengthy review and give my Pros and Cons and what I thought about my experience after having over 50+ hours in this game. So sit back and enjoy if you are feeling down to read a bit. And before I continue, thank you for reading this review and I hope it helps you make the decision on whether you will wait for it to go on sale, whether not to get it at all or whether to take the risk. Here goes. I will go ahead and start with some positive things about this game. Pros: Roster Size: The roster size this year is awesome. It totally surpasses 2k17 in roster size. 2K17 had 134 wrestlers on the disk that went up to 177 with all DLC and alternate versions (explained in the next sentence). 2K18 comes in with 174 wrestlers on the disk and it goes up to a record breaking 203 chracters with DLC and that includes alternate versions of the same character (Like there are 3 versions of John Cena which each count as its own unique character). This is astounding, truly. But we will get to the bad part of this later. Graphics: The graphics of this game are incredible. Due to a new engine, WWE 2K18 is able to do what none had thought possible. The Wrestlers actually look like their real life counterparts. Go on youtube and watch the WWE 2k17 vs 2K18 Randy orton entrance. The difference is astounding. However, 2K thought the could ride off of the graphics and use its stunning new feature to bypass its flaws, however they did not. Carry and Drag System: The Carry and Drag system is unique non the less. But I found it somewhat difficult to use on the PC, though it may be easier on the console versions to use. Though when you finally get someone into the carry system, it does allow for some awesome combo moves. Like dropping someones head onto the top rope and then going up top for a elbow drop! Or laying a ladder from the barricade to the ring, placing your opponent up on the ladder and then going up top for a elbow drop! Either way, elbow drop! This new feature is also added to distract from the real issues behind the scenes which we will get to now. Cons: DLC: Ok, probably one of the most controversial topics when the game was only a few weeks from release. The DLC. Many people such as I watched twitter all day when they had their "DLC CHARACTER DROP DAY", in which they released a new DLC character each hour until all DLC character's names were releaased to the public. I was in class at college that day and sat on my phone the whole time reading people's thoughts on who they would add. Now 2K17 gave us 20 new characters to play in DLC. I and many others waited all day to find out that 2k18 only had a whopping 10 new DLC characters. 10..... 10..... People were NOT happy. People were going to pay the same price of last years DLC but with half of the DLC. So if you havent bought the game yet, consider whether you are willing to pay the same price for half content, I did for the sake of the game and for making a review. Also might I add that at the time in which I am making this review not all of the DLC has been released yet, such as the Hardy Boys, the Rock and Roll Express and Beth Phoenix. However I have had fun with some of the NXT characters that are released such as Elias who I gave the IC title too in my Universe Mode. Either way it was a big slap to the community that 2K thought they could brush over with the pretty graphics and bigger roster. Dont be fooled. Universe Mode: Not much to say here but felt like I needed to touch on it. It is essentially the same as 2k17, there is nothing really added here except for the "Power Rankings!" which really dont do much but add a small buff to wrestlers who complete a challenge. "Backstage roaming on MyPlayer/MyPlayer": Oh boy, MyPlayer. Its ok dont get me wrong but "Free ROAM", not so much. Press the "W" key for about 30 seconds and you have seen the whole back area. Not really free roam. You can talk to a few people here and there but you still have really no control over your matches, championships are harder to get than 2K17 and the match cards make NO SENSE! I saw a match card the other night where Karl Anderson was fighting Brock Lesnar on a Monday night show. Now anyone who watches WWE knows 2 things, 1, Brock doesnt just show up to fight someone on a Monday Night show, if he shows up at all its for a promo which he doesnt even speak at, Paul heyman does that. And 2 Karl Anderson would NEVER want to fight nor would he fight Brock Lesnar. Then you have cards where Neville (Who isnt even with the company anymore) Is fighting Braun Strowman and Sheamus in a triple threat, though Neville was on 205 live. Its a messy system that makes these cards. I fought Mark Henry the other night, and he doesnt even wrestle anymore. Its just a bad bad mess. No major Updates: Seth Rollins, the man on the cover, doesnt have his updated music..... *Music Hits* *Waits* *Screams BURN IT DOWN!!!!!* *No "burn it down" in the entrance* Seth Rollins, The Usos, Big Cass, Baron Corbin, Chad Gable, Jason Jordan, and more dont even have updated entrance music. And speaking of Gable, I know that Shelton Benjamin came back half way through the year but you couldnt even add him as a DLC? I have to use a terribly designed Shelton from the download a CAW area to use with Gable and they dont have their theme music. Its bad, really bad. Baron Corbin's new entance music is some of the best entrance music ever and I have to wait another year to hear it. "BE LIKE NO ONE": Here is the big whammy. This "Theme" for the game is false. Be like no one my butt. Almost everything clothingwise and moves wise is locked in MyPlayer Mode. You have to open chests and roll for those clothing items and moves. In 2K17 all clothing was unlocked already. Moves you had to pay your in game cash to buy new moves sets, which wasnt bad. But in this game you use your hard earned money to roll chests in hopes that you get the item you want and then here is the kicked..... YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT AGAIN! Thats right people, if you roll a chest and get a shirt, you have only just unlocked the shirt, but to truly unlock it you must pay for it again. Normall a chest roll is anywhere from 5000 to 15000 cash. And to unlock it it may cost a 25 cash to a couple of hundred cash. But you just wasted 5000 to 15000 cash rolling to unlock the item. Its a messed up system that makes you wait and use your "Luck" to "#BELIKENOONE". Again Dont be fooled. In closing, this game had great potential. But failed worse than 2K17. Shiny graphics, THE NEW BIGGEST ROSTER, and that dumb prahse "BE LIKE NO ONE" was what they used to try to win people over, it worked. But if you havent bought the game yet, do your research before you make a final decision please. And read the review over a time or two. What I am telling you is no lie. If you buy the game or have bought it already you will find the same issues I am talking about here. I think at this point, the Devs listening to their playerbase and then adding updates on is the only thing that can save this game now. Just be weary before and when buying. If its not for you and you feel the same way, get a return on your money. In the end I have to give WWE 2K18 4/10. And thats being generous, I would not recommend it. Again thank you for reading. And if you have any questions feel free to ask or if you want to give your point of view on a particular comment of this review just go for it. Either way thank you and have a nice day.

My 11 year old nephew loves Roman Reigns. No wonder his birth parents didn't want him.
