  The better of the two DLCs. Much like the other DLC, this one feels a bit like a broken mess... Except unlike the other one, it's a broken mess in the same way modding in tanks into Skyrim turns Skyrim into a broken mess. Yes, it feels like everything added into the game very much doesn't belong here, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun. Again, it's the same story as the main game, except after the tutorial you are given a base. The base requires no upkeep, can't produce any utility ships or platforms, and overall requires some work before it does anything for you. It even starts literally off the map, waaaay to the side, and while the base can move, it's going to take forever before it can be moved somewhere close enough that your mining and transport ships aren't going to take forever getting to it to deliver ore. That said, it's basically just a flat bonus compared to the main start. So, what makes it feel broken? Well, every ship it produces does something weird that other ships in the game don't. From carrying minefields with them, to firing bullets that track enemies. Overall each ship feels like it's massively outperforming it's peers in it's class. Somehow in this sci-fi game with aliens and cyborg super soldiers, we now have a faction so weirdly out of place they feel like they came straight out of a completely different sci-fi series. Even the look of the ships doesn't match anything else in the game, with eye catching gold and black coloring on boxy ship designs making it look like these ships were the compromise of a design meeting of a joint venture between the Imperium of Man and the Protoss. Granted, they do not do well in auto-resolved overworld combat, and having to ferry ore and credits halfway across the map to get these ships takes forever. It's not even that the ships are just good. They are also kind of fun to play. Carrying minefields around with you, or watching a fleet of fighters fire shots that arc at enemies are certainly interesting. They perform well with upgrades, and generally make great player controlled ships. The only real issue I have with this DLC are that it adds a faction that doesn't actually have a presence on the map other than at player control, so you are using these ridiculously powerful ships but never fighting them.

  The second DLC for Void Destroyer 2 also provides an alternate start integrated into the base campaign and sandbox mode. Note that this is currently separate from the Big Red alternate start, and it will probably require the efforts of a modder to combine them for players that own both. The Ashes DLC has one of the background characters in the lore granting your character custodianship of a mobile R&D station, presumably as a cheap way to test the new experimental ship designs with plausible deniability. The Ashes fleet line provides a full suite of combat ships for every size category, from fighter through dreadnought. Each one is designed around an interesting weapon system with trade offs that encourage tactical use, and shows modders a few new tricks that can be executed in the engine. The twist to this that makes this an 'advanced start' for veteran players is that the Ashes fleet lineup lacks utility ships and the station itself has zero economy, so both must be acquired elsewhere. Initially, the base is a bit out of the way and lacks the energy necessary to be moved. The fighter, gunship, corvette, and frigate designs start unlocked, but it will take some work to be able to afford building them. Two fighters and a civilian mining ship are provided free to give a little boost. The larger ship classes unlock as you capture more bases. Overall, it provides a full in-house combat fleet that believably rivals the military faction for the player's use in the story campaign. All that for the modest price of ~$3.00. If you enjoy the base game, there is no reason not to support the developer and his artist by picking this up too.

  An exceptional DLC to an exceptional game, it adds new starts and a number of cool and interesting Ships all for the low price of 2 quid

  Good DLC overall, only complaint is that all of the ships overworld combat power is laughably anemic, (Archon, Phoenix, and over 30 Shrikes, all of which are heavily upgraded, except Archon, got destroyed easily by an outsider Frigate fleet, and often times when I go into the actual fight, my ships are damaged but the enemy ships are totally unscathed), but apart from that if you just enter the fight yourself usually you can make short work of anyone anyway, as all of the ships in this DLC are heavy hitters, and easily punch above their weight. Definitely recommend this DLC, for $3.00 its a steal, and definitely made me play the game in a new way.

  It's great. If you've played for a while and hit a mental block with your playthrough or are greedy and want to get a base early, get it! Refreshing DLC that builds upon the base game with interesting mechanics. Also a cheap way to help out the artist for these beautiful ships.
