ogre kingdoms are some of the most fun of any total warhammer faction to date, but I have to ask: can sega release a single one of these games without day 1 dlc, or is that just physically impossible

This content was taken out of the game just so they could make more money. The greeeeeeed is real. The faction is fun and enjoyable to play, but this is a disgusting practice to have, so it gets my down vote. DO NOT BUY FULL PRICE

So, I will be totally honest and say, that of all factions in these games, I really did not expect to end up loving these guys. I only got into the lore after playing the first game for about 6 months, and was never all that impressed with the ogre kingdoms, of all the races they seemed to be almost an afterthought. They don't really interact all that much with the other races beyond some mercenaries, mostly they just sit out at the edge of the map in the mountains of central not-asia eating stuff and killing each other, felt a big like fatter orks without the british accents. Come mid 2021 where they give us some mercenary units alongside the bull and the fool, and upon seeing a charge of mournfang cavalry, I realise I like these guys. And that was before the reveal that the map was covering the entire continent, so they are now not lingering in the margins but sitting slap bang in the middle of everything. And finally, that amazing trailer. So, if you want a very quick idea of who the ogre kingdoms are, go watch Shrek Forever After. They are basically the army of ogres, but in typical warhammer fashion make absolutely no attempt to pretend that they are the good guys. The giant space toads that made all life left them unfinished, so they are brutish, stupid, vicious and endlessly, interminably hungry. The god of their race is literally just a giant mouth, so that tells you all you need to know about their culture. They are nomads, and this works out pretty well in their game mechanics, where whilst they can occupy settlements, they really don't need to bother, as they mostly operate out of camps. This works out in game as you have x amount of settlements you can pop down pretty much anywhere. What makes this even better is you get to create their garrisons yourself, and they have very little upkeep, meaning they are uniquely well defended. Other settlements are really barely worth the effort to occupy. It's a very different experience to most of the game, where you are far less focused on building or maintaining an empire and more seeking out zones of conflict to plunder and build up your camps. Despite a few quibbles with their mercenary mechanic which I'll get too later, I like this, it works very well and makes them feel unique on the campaign map. Actually in battle is where their uniqueness really shines. For most other factions, you have 1-3 units of monstrous infantry. The ogres' entire roster is comprised of monstrous infantry besides their gnoblar punching bags, and I am really amazed at the variety of different types of shrek they actually implemented. Shrek with big stick, Shrek with big stick and shield, Shrek covered in armour, gollum shrek, Shrek with a pistol, Shrek with a great weapon the length of a car, Shrek carrying a canon, shrek riding a wooly rhino.... for a faction of hefty boiis they are really surprisingly flexible. Yes you will mostly be using rush tactics, but there's a good amount of different units to use so you never feel like you simply resort to "select all and click on the enemy." If they bring a lot of spears to try to hard counter you can bring a pile of ranged weapons, or drown them in chaff. They even gave almost the entire roster the ability to just smash through city walls, so you aren't even at a major disadvantage during sieges. They also have "big names" which means that your lords and heroes can earn various buffs, and some of these are really useful, my favourite being the one that makes all of your gnoblars unbreakble. The Hunter hero also has incredible voice acting. So, all in all very good, but I'd be remiss in not pointing out a few issues. Maybe not tabletp accurate, but I'd like a super tough tier 5 unit of ogres, even beefier ironguts. You have to take part in the Realm of Chaos campaign like the other factions, although IE came out the day before I wrote this so you won't. The roster feels a little incomplete. You only get two lords rather than the usual 4 with a race pack. I don't massively care about the Yhetees, but the Thundertusk was a fabulous model, and it was made from the same kit as a stonehorn so it's not really different enough in body type or animations to excuse being left out. There is no dedicated melee hero for some reason (Although this has been an issue with almost al TWW3 factions on launch), and most strangely, there is no option for mounts for your lords and heroes beyond the hunter. The models for Mournfangs, Rhinoxen and Stonehorns are already in the game, and it feels weird that I can't use them as mounts. I think the biggest disappointment though is the mercenary mechanic, which is incredibly half baked. You would think this would work via the diplomacy screen, with factions being able to hire you to attack rivals, destroy or take settlements on their behalf, that sort of thing, and also walk up to camps and hire a few units as mercenaries for within their own armies like in game 2. How this actually works out is you have a tab, where every ten turns you are given a pick of three missions for surrounding factions, all of which are "attack settlement" or "Kill lord." They have a tiny timer, and you get about 1000-1500 gold and +15 relations with the faction giving the contract. If you are not familiar, this means that except in the very early game, they are not even worth the effort of pursuing, and I've completed some only to have the faction that I just did the contract for declare war on me anyway. If you are not playing as the ogres, you cannot offer contracts at all, and you can't even hire the same variety of units as game 2, being arbitrarily restricted to their tier 1 ogre bulls. You are supposed to be moving around chasing contracts, but they feel like such an afterthought that it's almost funny. I really hope that this is placeholder and will be explored more in the future, maybe with a possible dogs of war race pack, or at least with a future ogre lord pack. Beyond this they feel very solid, so it should be noted this one issue got such attention from me because everything else is so good. Finally, a single pet peeve, I'd love the ability to pack up and move your camps rather than having to destroy and rebuild. Despite these pet peeves, they are still one of the best races in game 3, and I can't wait to try them on IE 8.5/10. NO VOICE IN MY EARS BUT THE MAW

the fact that this is a dlc shows that ca can essentially make products that have been stripped to barebones and still charge it like its a full game then release all the stripped content and sell it as dlc makes me sick.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS DLC, we need to teach these companies that we will not pay for their half finished and broken games. I know 90% of us have other un played games in our library. Additionally, the Ogre "race" has the depth and feel of a poorly thought out flc. Bretonnia is a significantly more thought out and engaging race that has far better game mechanics than the Ogres. I can almost guarantee you that you will only ever play the ogres kingdoms one just to try it out, and never touch this half baked race dlc again. It is barely worth it if you play a lot of multiplayer, and definitely not worth it if you only play campaign. There are other games/ DLC's that are not half assed that you can spend your money on.
