About the Game

The latest instalment in the award-winning series, Sniper Elite 5 offers unparalleled sniping, tactical third-person combat and an enhanced kill cam. Fight your way across the most immersive maps yet, with many real-world locations captured in stunning detail, and an improved traversal system that lets you explore more of them than ever before.

France, 1944 – As part of a covert US Rangers operation to weaken the Atlantikwall fortifications along the coast of Brittany, elite marksman Karl Fairburne makes contact with the French Resistance. Soon they uncover a secret Nazi project that threatens to end the war before the Allies can even invade Europe: Operation Kraken.

EXPANSIVE CAMPAIGN

Many real-world locations have been captured using photogrammetry to recreate a living, immersive environment, and multiple infiltration and extraction points and kill list targets provide a whole new perspective on each mission. Take on the Nazi plot solo or work with a partner, with improved co-op mechanics allowing you to share ammo and items, give orders and heal each other.

ADVANCED GUNPLAY PHYSICS AND TRAVERSAL

Use ziplines, slide down slopes and shimmy along ledges to reach the perfect vantage point, or to sneak past a sharp-eyed lookout. Factor in rifle stock and barrel options along with gravity, wind and heart rate while you line up your sights on the target.

HIGH CALIBRE CUSTOMISATION

Use workbenches to customise and upgrade virtually every aspect of your weapon – change scopes, stocks, barrels, magazines and more. Rifles, secondaries and pistols all have a huge variety of options. On top of that you can select the ammo to suit your target, from armour-piercing right down to non-lethal.

INVASION MODE – CAMPAIGN DROP IN PvP AND CO-OP

Invade another player’s Campaign as an Axis sniper and engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse, providing a new dimension to the challenge as you stalk your prey. Alternatively, as Karl you can call for assistance and have a second sniper drop in to help you out of a tricky situation.

TENSE ADVERSARIAL MULTIPLAYER

Customise your character and loadout and earn XP, medals and ribbons as you take on intensely competitive 16 player battles that will really test your sharpshooting skills. If co-op’s more your style, you can team up with up to 3 other players against waves of enemies in Survival mode.

ENHANCED KILL CAM

More realistic and grisly than ever, the trademark X-ray kill cam returns, showing you the true destructive power of each shot. Bones deflect bullets unpredictably, ripping a new path through enemy bodies. SMGs and pistols can also trigger kill cams, including multiple shots in dramatic slow motion.

The game penalizes you with less XP earned for everything you do in single player if you choose not to play with online invasions. Refunded

Great game but they got rid of the unlimited throwing rocks to distract soldiers. I will never forgive Rebellion for this action. 4/5 -- 7.5 hour update Its really a 5/5. The rocks held a special place in my heart but now having played the game a bit more I understand why it was replaced. They added bottles and whistling. The bottles are a bit over powered. One toss can knock out enemies silently. The whistle makes me fell like I'm Sam Fisher back in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, luring all the guards around the corner to their demise. The addition of shooting out lights and climbing up the sides of buildings makes this game fill those Assassins Creed and Splinter Cell shapes holes in my soul after years of disappointment. Its the superlative of Sniper Elite games. V3 was really good, 4 was way better, 5 is simply the best.

Unfortunately a 6.5/10 for me at the moment. Core elements remain the same as in previous iterations, but new mechanics are implemented very poorly and detract from the overall experience. Most notably, the developers added vertical movement (a la Assassin's Creed), but--unlike in AC--while you can climb *some* surfaces such as vines, you can't even walk up the bank of a road or hop over a small pile of rocks. This leads to extremely awkward gameplay where you are never sure whether you can climb over something or not (usually not), and have to try first to find out. The aforementioned problem also means that the large open map, another new feature, is actually not large at all. For example, there are some roads that you simply cannot walk off of because you are somehow unable to ascend a 15 degree incline, despite being able to climb the side of a house. Compounding this problem are barriers that have absolutely no reason to be barriers, such as slightly-dense foliage and low walls. Why can I climb over medium walls but not low walls? The worst is when you find out you can actually climb something, such as as a side of a house--only to realize that it leads to a dead end (i.e. you cannot top out) and your only option is to climb back down. Remove the ambiguity, please. The redeeming quality is that, once you get past the fence that could only be cut in one place but not another, and actually get sniping, it's the same old goodness as before.

The game is fine, but that's not what this review is about. The new 'invasion' mechanic is implemented horribly. I don't know who worked on it, but it suddenly expects you to play like you're in some battle royale arena instead of Sniper Elite. I was invaded in the first level, died because I tried to be aggressive, and was immediately invaded again, so I decided to find a defensible location and watch my angles of approach (y'know, like a sniper, in my sniping game) but was immediately penalised for 'camping' by having my location revealed. It wouldn't be so bad if there was some incentive to approach each other over time, but with open maps the size of some small countries, no time limit, and no regular hints about where the other guy is hiding (unless you use telephones, which can be booby-trapped), dealing with a single invader can take upwards of ten minutes. And this, in turn, wouldn't be such a big deal either, if you didn't get XP docked for playing with invasions disabled. If Rebellion is so proud of this new "feature" that they'll punish you for opting out, you'd think they'd have made sure to iron out the kinks first. I'll review this game properly if they find some way to make the invasions fun, or stop punishing people who opt out, because right now, they're a stain on the whole experience.

It pains me to write this review, because I loved the previous game dearly, and while I certainly don't hate this iteration, I'm just... disappointed. Short version: this game is one step forward, 15 small steps back. Longer version - Oh boy, let me list you my grievances: - Our protagonist appears to have been dropped on his head between games, and while he still remembers how to pick up guns from fallen enemies, he is entirely incapable of conceiving of how to reload them, and will instead simply discard them once the initial ammo runs out. Or any time you switch weapon, for that matter. - Speaking of weapons, the initial selection (including unlockables) is a travesty, with basically every well-known rifle from the period suspiciously missing from the list (which is made up of a lackluster 6 rifles of mostly obscure models... almost like someone was planning to sell back the fan favourites as DLC down the line. Almost.) - Then there's the elephant in the room - invasion mode. To be fair here, I am in no way protesting its existence, and I wish anyone excited by it a jolly good time - but to have singleplayer PvE unlockables gated to not only participation, but performance in a PvP mode, that's gonna be a hard yikes from me. Insult to injury that turning it off results in a penalty to all xp earned. - Along with reloading enemy weapons, our protag has also forgotten how to pick up rocks from the ground for easy throwing, and must now rely entirely on whatever glass bottles he can find along the way. - (As a trade-off, he appears to have learned to harness his latent psychic abilities in order to sense enemies through walls. YMMW on this one) - Your mileage may also vary on the gun customization feature. While it's not COD-levels of bad, it's certainly taking some historical liberties - and every single attachment available somehow make some aspect of the gun worse, a design decision I personally loathe. - Traversing is great, until it ain't. When it works, traversal feels... very decent. But there's a lot of times where there are no visual cues and even less logic to what you can and can't climb, and at least the first map is plagued by knee-high impassable obstacles, invisible walls, and long stretches of ditches, vegetation or fencing that any normal human should be able to traverse with ease, but our protag inexplicably cannot. - Finally, there's a lot of things that, while not outright bad, also just aren't as good as they were before. Tagged enemies don't show up as they used to, making visibility sometimes an issue. Empty lung looks and feels just a little worse than before (in part because it now has a wind-up time of sorts, making repeat shots less fluid). The kill-cams, while now available from just about any weapon (which is great) just look... jankier, somehow - which is kindof impressive, to be honest. All in all - it's hard not to come across as someone with a vendetta writing this, but I feel it is an accurate representation of the game in it's current state. It's not that the game is not fun, and I definitely plan on putting more hours in it - but I've already paid for it, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. I feel overall let down with some of the choices made by the design team. I'm sure a lot of this will change and improve with patches and DLC, but in its current state, I really cannot think of a reason to recommend anyone buy this over Sniper Elite 4.

If Call of Duty is too fast for you, this game is perfect. Play cadet level if you want to just relax a little and snoop around taking pop shots. I'm 56 and this game is great for people who aren't as fast with the trigger anymore... ie, on Cadet level :-)

I'm an older gamer and enjoy sniper games. Not as fast paced, and I don't play online war games as I usually get my butt kicked fairly quick, so, the sniper games are fun for me. I have the complete Sniper Elite series and have been playing them since the first one was released. I play mostly on the cadet mode as that is where, for me, it is most fun. I get this "review" is not what most are looking for but I just wanted to say I am having fun and so far enjoying the game as I hope you will too.

Just finished the main campaign. Enjoyed it, but can't recommend it, especially for the price. The why follows: What they have done is taken an atmospheric shooter which really hit a high point in its 4th incarnation and made it, well, worse. MUCH worse. The game is supposed to be about traversal, stealth, and finding your way to take out various enemies. What it has become is on-rails, do-this-this-way then do-that-same-thing-again-in-a-different-place, but sometimes they mix in you having absolutely no idea what you are supposed to be doing. Stealth Example: Sub pen, surrounded by Germans, trying to figure out how to sabotage a fuel system when the icon it presents for objectives is nothing more than a general hint, when at other times it's showing you exactly what you need to interact with. Turns out there was only one way to do it, by using a crowbar on a nondescript panel next to one of many large doors that for the most part are inaccessible. Only way I found it was by killing everyone so I could have a good look around. Not. Exactly. Immersive. Other stealth issues: Enemies sometimes get stuck on a piece of scenery then warp to where they were going, resulting in suddenly being where they weren't as you were sneaking up on them. If combat initiates (in other words you have been caught) even if you stay exactly where you are having killed the one who spotted you their mates will, after a short period of running about, go back to what they were doing before despite their pal's corpse now being draped over their position. Oh, and bottles are the new rocks. Bottles. Up to six of them in your inventory and that's exactly the kind of thing a sniper needs, because milk floats are so difficult to hear. Traversal example: The first mission looks like a huge open map with endless possibilities for approach and escape. It would be, if not for the huge amounts of invisible walls that force you to follow - at best - one of two paths to a place. Each map has distinct areas, so your ability to move between them is massively hampered for reasons as yet unknown. Other traversal issues: There are ziplines everywhere in some missions, meaning that relocation is dramatically oversimplified, particularly if you have been spotted. at the same time, there are 6 foot high walls you can climb but a knee high hedge is magically impassable. And they have added a bit of Far Cry 4 tower-climbing goodness when you have to figure out how to access a workbench (sometimes you will know it's there in advance, sometimes not) where you can change your loadout (good apart from not many different types) and what your weapons are fitted with (massively underwhelming). To get there, you have to find the only possible path to one half of a bombed out farmhouse because you can't for example, move the light pieces of furniture that are blocking the stairs, or shoot them, or blow them up. Flimsy wooden doors remain impervious to high explosives, as do hedges, arboretums and small rocks. You can kill a Tiger tank with them though. Oh, and interaction with the environment is AWFUL. You frequently have to stand up to pick up some objects because the game won't cycle through what you can interact with when you change what you are looking at. Sometimes, it takes four tries to climb a ladder, and it's really easy for the game to drop you from a great height because it has decided that you moving towards the ladder was you intending to drop down the hole it's in and injure yourself. And sometimes you climb a ladder to find you can't even get onto the surface it leads to, presumably because of a glitch. Dreadful execution. Finding your own way to kill someone? Well, you CAN sometimes do that but the only problem is you are SUPPOSED to kill them a specific way, usually involving the environment or something else that is simply..a task. Put poison in someone's glass, unlock a weapon. Choose any other way? No new weapon for you, and there is usually only one environmental option for each target. Shooting them from 500 yards through a glass window isn't even an option because the game makes glass impenetrable to high velocity armour-piercing rounds - but again, you can kill Tigers with them. The whole point of the game was to find a way to kill the target that matches how you play - and that has been completely removed. So, apart from those three issues, and the egregious, gauche social "justice" messaging that crops up in almost every cutscene, Sniper Elite 5 isn't awful. It looks very pretty, shooting is still fun, although the effectiveness of the assault weapon slot is very limited as soon as Jagers turn up (7 bullets into one and he was still fighting until I used the much more effective pistol). So, if you've got this far and still haven't figured out if you should get it, please don't. Get 4. It's a much, much better game in almost every respect.
