Combat is not particularly challenging, but hard enough to take it out of "casual" territory. Puzzles are similar, although some threw me for a loop. The primary game mechanic appears to be bribery. Collect lots of whatsits and donate them to villages to influence them. Many will find that boring. I found it relaxing. Or to save yourself time, stock up on raid flares, let the other villages war on each other, and then loot the dead. :D If you're looking for a challenging game, this is not it. But it's pleasant and enjoyable.

I was going to wait until I had a few more hours into this game before I wrote a review, but I couldn't wait. I'm 37 years old, and have been jaded by a swarm of lackluster and seemingly uninspired games that, at best, have proven to be a mere distraction without any real immersion, and at worst, have been a frustrating waste of time. Well, this game immediately jumped out at me as a breath of fresh air in the realm of interactive story-telling. Everything is lovingly crafted from the textures of the ground to the models of seemingly insignificant plants. The controls are well above par and the animations are fluid. This game was definitely crafted with love, and it shows when playing it. From one storyteller to another, kudos to those of you at Twirlbound. You've done something that hasn't been done for me in well over a decade; you've captured my imagination and made me get swept up in setting and story. This is going to be a classic. A timeless benchmark for action-adventure RPGs going forward to be compared against. It's about time something this well-polished and balanced came to Steam. And Pine launched with a native-Linux client, day-one. As you said you would. Take note, other developers. This is how you do it. You follow through with what you say, and you let your passion shine through in your work. I have a category in my Steam library that very, very few games get the honor of receiving: All Time Greats. I'm a little over an hour into Pine, and I can tell you with every fiber of my confidence that this game will be among them. You've rekindled that spark of my childhood, imagination and wonder of different worlds that I had thought died along with my innocence from my short but bitter taste of war. I know very few people will read this, like most of what I write, but I just want you to know this game has brought me up a rung in morale and mindset. Just when I thought the soul of this world had lost its depth of character and passion, something as seemingly simple as a video game can bring to life something once long thought dead in me; my imagination. Pine: a timeless classic structured just like a bonfire story of old.

From my playing time so far, i can say the following: Pros: -Beautiful graphics -Reasonably immersive atmosphere -Decent size of world -Enjoyable relaxing gameplay overall with easy little puzzles here and there, adequately challenging enemies, and good overall game mechanics. -Awesome music that fits the setting (beautiful valleys / war / etc). -Big battles between species are great (until you get pulled in xD). -Handy Auto save + manual save system. Cons: -Encountered very minimal audio bugs where the characters voice didnt activate with the on screen text. -Performance could be improved imo. Still playable nonetheless. TL;DR: I sometimes briefly forget this is an indie game. Might update after playing more.

Note: I'm updating my review as I play more of the game. I don't have a lot of hours in the game yet but I want people who are looking at it now to know a bit about the game so they can buy it at the 10% discount they have going right now. Pine is an indie adventure/RPG game made by just 7 people. It follows the story of Hue who, because of certain reasons, needs to look for a new place to live for his Human tribe. He goes out into the wild to find many different species living in the world, which are all very smart. Some species are real brawlers, others have ranged capabilities, some are more focused on gathering resources, etc. Each species is different. Early in the game you find out that you can influence the relationships between you and the species. If you give a hostile village some gifts for example, they may open up their village to you. Become friendly and you can even trade with them! Who knows, maybe some of the interesting characters in the world can help you find a new home for your tribe? Pine has an unmatched level of charm and personality the likes of which I have not seen yet this year, or last year. Considering the team size, the environments, character models and effects are all very nicely done & artistically consistent, and the music is the cherry on top! The game isn't perfect, of course. It's hard to describe, but there are certain parts of gameplay and animation where you can tell it's made by a small team. That's definitely not an issue, but I'm just saying that there are parts where you can see things could have been better. I experienced some slight problems with the movement animations of Hue, collision detection with objects and the ground, occasionally weird collision boxes on rocks that didn't allow me to climb on them. But then I remember that the game was made by such a small team, and in all other aspects of the game you can see that they put a LOT of love into this project. When the animations are there, they are super smooth. I've encountered no major visual or gameplay breaking bugs. The camera works. The combat works. The crafting system works. The movement system works. The NPC AI works. Everything is just very impressive for an indie title. Comparisons have been made to Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, and I have to agree there are some similarities, but Pine is different in many ways. It's unique and innovative. I would almost dare to say this game is redefining the Indie RPG/Adventure genre. Pine will be on many GOTY lists, and it will be on mine as well. Congratulations Twirlbound on creating an amazing game to be enjoyed by many people for years to come. You absolutely deserve every praise you get.

After a few hours of gameplay and exploration the glamor wears off and it’s easy to see the world is bland and empty. There are only 4 wild animals, 4 types of villagers and nothing really to do. You can go around and gather Skyrim-style but all you do is barter and trade for diplomacy. I haven’t gotten into the late game yet but the beginning and middle aren’t really enough to keep me hooked. Devs please add more! This feels like a (well done) pre-release version. I’d be very disappointed if this was the final product. There are also some things that could be polished, characters get stuck a lot, animations are slow and fighting is agonizingly clunky and delayed.

Even though I give PINE a recommendation, do not buy this game expecting: - A deep, rich story-line. - A traditional RPG experience with numerous gear sets and progression(There is some), non linear choices, meaningful dialog, and weighted decisions. - A traditional level up system with skill trees and the like. - City or base building mechanics. - A fast-paced and thrilling combat system. - More than 10 hours of main story and side mission content. (Game is very short if you stick to the main quest line) Think of this game like the first Zelda, in which you have a linear mission to complete where both character and story progression is made through better equipment and gadgets, rather than levels and a talent tree. It's a fun game with a colorful and relaxing world full of anthropomorph animal factions that are in a constant struggle for territory. Outside of some whiskered lizards, the only enemies you need worry about are members of the factions you're hostile with, and you tend to run into them frequently on the roads and in the wild as they gather food and materials for their villages. The combat will feel clunky and unintuitive to those who are used to more responsive controls and faster paced gameplay, but PINE seems more geared toward exploration than combat. I personally used a bow for 90% of the game, which made the few situations with a scripted battle more bearable, as I do not like the melee combat mechanics one bit. The game has a great start and does a fantastic job of drawing you in, but the pacing goes right out the window at a certain point as you pretty much breeze through the 2nd half in no time flat, due to better equipment and the simple and somewhat shallow storyline. About 3 hours in, you'll realize you've experienced 80% of what PINE is. That said, for a $25 game with a small and talented team of dedicated developers, you get your money's worth(my opinion). No more, no less.

I was really looking forward to this game. It's charm quickly faded when I realized that I was effectively playing an early beta build, but it clearly wasn't labeled as such. I spent 7.4 hours playing this, trying to find something that makes it redeemable for all of it's flaws, but after a timed jumping puzzle from hell, in a game that drops frames left and right, I realized that I had reached the end of my rope. Unfortunately, the only points I could award to this game are for Charm. It's definitely a 3.5/10 considering the following criteria: 1. Combat is unrefined, and attacks often send you right through who you're fighting, causing you to miss. 2. The Camera glitches constantly, and makes getting around and being aware of your surroundings pretty annoying. 3. The Faction system forces you to switch sides often, instead of honoring your choices. 4. Upgrades to gear feel mostly meaningless, and have very little impact on your performance in combat. 5. Game crashing bugs exist throughout. I encountered 2 of them within my first 3 hours playing. There are also bugged questlines, where exploring an area before obtaining the quest could result in you being stuck and unable to proceed. 6. Lack of diversity. There are 4 types of critters, that's it. 7. Lots of emptiness between points of interest. Exploration is a key to the game, but a lot of these areas are just void of any purpose: no tribes go there, no harvest nodes spawn there, and they're just a big pointless space that you have to run through to get to somewhere that is more useful. I could continue, but overall the game just feels like it was released about 6 months to a year too early, and despite people saying the game is well-polished, my impression of the game was quite the opposite.

The game is pretty cute, and the initial premise of building relationships with clans to further your goals seems really intriguing. I think some might find the collection a good aspect of the game -- while it is a little tedious to hunt for the same ~15 or so ingredients around the map, the fact that they stay in the same location but that location isn't recorded rewards players truly learning the map and the timing of the world. But the mechanics of the game is where you really start to see it's weakness. Way back in 1998 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time comes out with a lock-on combat system, and 20 years later this game can't even get half of what made it work 20 years ago right. The movements are imprecise and clunky, your sword will clip through enemies as they immediately retaliate, and the camera will shift around your perspective instead of framing your enemies in a nice tight viewport. If you want to avoid frustration, you'll finding yourself quickly "Assassin's Creed"-ing this and just waiting to counterattack melee foes, and run around for openings with ranged ones. Even just the base movement is annoying, as the fairly simple platformer puzzles are made frustrating by a laggy jump timing and difficult to interpret landing location. You character feels like he might just float off an edge if you land wrong instead of giving you a sense of solid connection to the ground. This wouldn't be a problem if the game brought other options to bear. Stealth, ways of using the environment to trick enemies into taking damage, anything to turn the prospect of combat from an annoyance to a puzzle to solve. Instead, you can set a bunch of traps, bait the AI into walking right into them, and hope you did enough damage to not need a drawn out dodge-fest. If you could better involve clan politics to avoid fighting that would be great! Without that core part of the game to rely on there's not much to reccomend. The clan system isn't interesting enough to want to spend time doing it, the story hangs on a bit long for minor progress, and the puzzles are less brainy than they are 'try using the bad mechanics to get onto a rotating platform'. I think this is an easy lesson for developers: make moving your character around *fun*. Make people invested in all the basic mechanics of the game, then throw in the clan politics stuff you wanted to sell the game on.

I finished this ~$20 title in about 22 hours. For a game developed by about 7 people, this was fantastic. This isn't a AAA title. This isn't Zelda. This is a fleshed out enough/ openish world that has bumps and bruises, but is also completely worth the price. Just gonna keep this short: I really enjoyed it (even with it's flaws).

After roaming around and playing through the story for a while, I've decided that the game just isn't fun. Even while avoiding the bugs just fine and ignoring the dialogue mistakes, the main activities of the game just aren't fun to do. It really amounts to donating items gathered from the world to different species of people to become friendly with them. When donating to one, the others will all lower their social status by a small amount, making a tricky system. Those which happen to be enemies can be fought against, but combat is a minor game activity. This is especially true with how slowly the character responds to inputs, whether jumping or walking and so on. Really, I find myself wondering what the devs' main thought was for what would be fun in this game. I'm not finding it. Is donating stuff supposed to be fun? What especially hurts the game is that the story forces the player to do things that they may not want to, like attacking people in a completely unprovoked way to simply get an item they drop. One such event is a consequence of going where the game told me to, only to discover that my social relations on the island will now be harder to maintain, as if I'd done something wrong to everyone else by simply exploring. This hinders an already awkward gameplay mechanic of trying to become friends with entire species. Ultimately, the game fails to offer much reason to enjoy it and even gets in the way of what is already here.
