  Used to be great. Now the player made portal hubs are all shut down and huge cities are slowly decaying back to natural state. Some unpopular design decisions were made and a massive number of the active player base just quit in protest. I have tried several times to get back into this and never see another player. Same few mob types with almost no updates. Game play loop kindof requires active players and stores to sell, and purchase resources. Its not designed to be a single player game but that is what you will likely get out of it. Sadly I give it "Dead Game"

  I haven't played for a while and can’t speak to whatever changes have been made in the last two years (though, it doesn’t sound like many have been made). I’m mainly writing this due to the overwhelming number of fanboys attacking other reviewers due to limited playtime. I played this game for over 900 hours. It is boring, repetitive, and takes forever to gather the resources needed to craft better blocks, equipment, etc. It can also cost a lot of money if you’re the type of person that wants to create large builds – a cost that isn’t justifiable considering it can all be lost of if you or a family member gets sick and/or your laptop/console isn’t working and you cannot log in to refill beacons. Why did I spend over 900 hours playing a boring and repetitive game? I played with other people, which makes pretty much any game fun, until they all quit. I stopped playing very shortly after my husband did. At least with Minecraft you can preserve your builds for years without needing to either log in regularly or spend extra money. After losing hundreds of hours of builds and progress, I can honestly say that whatever interest I still had in this game is 100% gone. I will never play this game again and deeply regret the amount of time I spent playing it.

  I invested relatively early in the development of Boundless (then called Oort Online) because I was impressed with the development team. As a developer myself, I understand that it takes quite a lot of vision, planning and strict quality control to create a game like this. I saw a high level of creativity (and consistency) along with a real dedication to quality and transparency in the game's forum. That was impressive and I knew this team could create something unique. At the moment, the game itself is a ton of fun if you enjoy exploration and building. There's not currently a lot of the more advanced game play features like economy, farming, trade progression, etc. but I've learned a lot about what the team has planned for the near future and it looks very promising. The latest big update included a much improved user experience, player models, expanded crafting, tool models, lighting fixes, expanded weather, etc. The game was already very beautiful and has only become more so. With the recent announcement of support by Sony to make Boundless a PC and Playstation-only game, I'm excited to see where this team takes the game.

  Once upon a time, I reviewed Boundless shortly after its name had changed from Oort Online. I gave it a thumbs down, with the side note that I bought in because I believed in it, and it had serious potential. It's been about a year, now. New games have come and gone. Boundless has been under development by its dev team. So, how does it hold up? Before I get to my usual "What Works?", "What Doesn't Work?" and the "TL;DR", first, Boundless is a MMO-Block-Buildy game. It's sort of like Minecraft, only on one centralized server, presumably with [i]a lot[/i] of people running around also doing stuff. Put differently, Boundless is a very pretty, more authoritative Minecraft clone where you are a giant teddy bear using naturalistic technology possibly stolen from the Na'vi. No, I'm not making that up, either. [b]What Works[/b] First, I noticed some RPG mechanics for mining, building, fighting monsters, and some other stuff. This is a good thing to add, because it makes the first couple of hours of gameplay more interesting (and, this game's first few hours need more interesting gameplay, but we'll get to that.) They weren't there two years ago, and I feel like you can 'skill up' quickly enough for it to be fun, even if the results just aren't that awesome (usually you do a thing faster.) Next, the menu-driven crafting system is much improved from where it was in 2015, and I like the direction it's headed. As you construct things in the game world, certain combinations let you interact to begin crafting. Instead of needing to arrange certain items in a grid, you just choose what you want from a menu. Simplicity itself, I really like this. I feel like, as someone who's put the game down and taken an extended break, that certain items like the fire pit/furnace combination could be spelled out a little more explicitly for players, but ultimately, the crafting system is good. The game is also very well-optimized in this early state of its development. I'm running the game on a HP 500-217c with factory hardware (in other words, an aging system), and its defaults hold a consistent framerate well. It's always a good sign when a game is reasonably well-optimized. [b]What Doesn't Work[/b] First, and most frustrating, the controls. For some reason when I turn my character with my mouse, if I turn too quickly, my character snaps back to where the game thinks I should be pointing; turning with arrow keys turns the character at a slower rate, but requires me to take my hand off of the mouse. It is possible to turn normally if you look upwards or downwards far enough, which is clunky and error prone, and frankly just plain wrong. [b]This is horribly, horribly irritating[/b], and this alone would be a big enough issue for me to thumbs down the game, except that there are other problems. [b]Basic actions, like turning your character, should not be broken two+ years into a title.[/b] Your game should not be fighting me when I want to do something, [i]ever[/i]. I recommend that the developers revisit the basic controls and fix them. Second, game pacing. This game starts off lethargically slow, to the point of boring me halfway to sleep. Finding wood, whacking wood with a totem (heh), and crafting a basic workbench is OK, and comparable to other works in the block-buildy genre. Figuring out where to place the workbench relative to a base beacon is exceptoinally irritating; some nearby blocks work, others don't. There's no indication - have fun guessing! ...That's an unrelated problem however. It's something else worth fixing. When you [i]do[/i] figure out where to place a workbench, and start getting stone, you get ground to a halt by the crafting process itself - it takes about 2:30 to make a single stone tool, at Crafting Lv.1. [i]This is way too long.[/i] In MineCraft, if I have sticks and stones, I have a stone tool. To cook meat to restore your HP? 2:30. While I get that the developers may want to control the pacing for technical or game design reasons, your early game cannot afford to have such horrible pacing. For what its worth, because the game is more interesting I lasted more than the two hours I lasted back in 2015, but I was experiencing serious anti-fun while doing it. It was at this point that I really stopped this particular play session. There's been a lot more added to the game, but when the game is fighting you at every opportunity - not a figure of speech - there comes a point where continuing is more painful than stopping. Because this review is intended to help the developers build a better product, I'm considering recording a YouTube video of my experiences to help with getting this game up to snuff. [b]The TL;DR[/b] [b][i][u]No, not recommended.[/u][/i][/b] This game has awesome ideas, beautiful visuals, [i]and experience-breaking issues that need to be resolved.[/i] While I give this game a downvote, I want to re-iterate something I said at the coda of my previous review: this is a game where, problems aside, one can easily see that the developers are putting blood, sweat, and tears into this work. The craftsmanship of the bits that aren't messed up is exquisite. I can't justify telling anyone to drop $34.99 USD on this game, but I don't regret my purchase, as this game is much closer to being an awesome experience than it was two years ago. I encourage anyone who owns this game to reinstall, and give the dev team notes on what you're seeing. It seems like the developers took my previous review, really read it, and tried to make the game better. They didn't argue - they really want this game to be enjoyable. Tell them what's wrong with it, they need to know, so that you can justify your purchase.

  For the first 10 minutes of my journey, Boundless was a pretty good upgrade to Minecraft. Then, as I was learning about plots and fantasizing about one day owning enough to encompass an entire planet, someone approached me. That alone broke any remaining ties to other sandbox games that thrive on you being alone with your thoughts and feeding off your creativity to do things you could do in any other game. *someone approached me* and asked how I was doing? What a crazy concept, that people just walk around and ask how you are in this game. He must be bored :/. The fellow mentions that he owns a nearby shop, and that if I needed anything, which I probably would, that I should spend my arbitrary currency there, and invited me to follow him to see it. That's all it took. Seeing a shop run by a player, and seeing that player journey out into the world to find clientele in a fairly philanthropic manner told me everything I needed to know about how in depth this game would be. The first week was full of exciting discoveries: massive player-built cities, incredibly diverse terrain and cave systems with mining that actually rewarded you appropriately. The second week was full of ambitious ventures that didn't QUITE work out, but still fueled my desire to achieve more. The weeks since have been an endless journey of learning and scientifically testing theories and ultimately creating a multi-planet trading company based in a huge market with mining base camps spread throughout the stars. There is simply no limit to what you can achieve in Boundless. This game offers something for every kind of player, and every kind of player who doesn't think they fall in to any category for "kinds of players". The community is full of rich characters and supportive groups of people that want nothing more than to help you on your journey. The developers are just as friendly, and always patient. The content is endless, the gameplay is always fun, and well basically, there is no reason not to buy this game. It is hands down the best sandbox game on the market, and if you want something to crush your jaded cynicism about early access games, developer forums, and sandbox communities, this is the one.   Long story short, this game is gonna be more than just a game. It's going to be a social network in it's own right. It's simply amazing, and also in a very good state considering it's still an Alpha. Now, for the longer version of this review, I'm gonna start with the negative bits first because there aren't many at all and not really "negative" but more consequences of an alpha version of a game that hasn't been marketed at all. 1) The game feels dead. This is because of it's early stage, so not really a downside, but for those like me who expect to see cities teeming with players (like in the trailer), you might want to put those expectations aside. There are still some select groups of players that are still active, mostly builders. The only con of inactive players is you can get bored pretty quickly if you're not too much into mining and building (on your own). Not a lot of social activities to do, although the forums are pretty active so if you try to bring people together, you will likely succeed. 2) Leveling up requires work. Don't expect to do some little tasks and grow in level. You need to put serious work down, such as mining and hunting. The good thing is almost everything you do in game earns you experience, so if you're active you can still level up quicker. 3) Complex skill system. I say complex because a beginner won't know where to start. Every time you level up, you get skill points, which you can use to learn all kinds of things such as crafting tools & equipment, crafting machines as well as abilities to enhance your character's speed, jump, tool usage, etc. There are literally a lot of skills, so before you start using your skill points randomly (like I did), have a look around all the skill trees and see what you can learn and use. You also get cleanse points with every level, meaning you can revert a skill back, but these CPs are limited, so you still have to be considerate when choosing your skills. Now that I've narrowed down the negative bits, I'll be talking about why this game is awesome and why it's gonna be huge. I see Boundless like the love child of Minecraft and World of Warcraft, with features drawn from a whole lot of other games as well. 1) The game allows you to choose your activity. You can be whatever you want. You can be a builder, building things for the community to admire and use. You can be a business owner, having a shop that makes you a lot of money. You can be a hunter. You can be an explorer. You can be a begger on the streets of Therka Market or in the slums of Krakendown. 2) Everything in-game is player made. All those huge cities and towns are built by players. Which is just amazing. Some of them are nicer than the others, but just the fact that a lot of people come together in one place to build settlements is just amazing. 3) Great trading system. You can buy and sell everything using shop stands or request baskets (think auction house). No need to stay online and chase people to do manual trading. Although you can do that too, which is awesome because it simply allows you to trade anything for everything. Wanna trade some wood for some iron? You can do it. Wanna trade that iron for some coins? Nothing can stop you. 4) Love the way using stuff works. You don't need to be special in order to use that high-tier item. If you got the dough, you can buy it. No need to gain skill points and materials in order to craft it. Although, if you're broke, yeah, you need to go down those caverns and get materials. Provided you don't jump in a lava pool by accident. 5) Going back to building, it just works. A lot of flexibility in building structures. Not a lot of content in terms of furniture, but there are a lot of block types and variations and you also get those chisels which are used to shape blocks to add that extra detail. 6) Again, related to building. Every player earns land plots with every level gained. To place a land plot, you need a beacon. Those beacons are using fuel in order to stay active. As long as a beacon is active, all land plots connected to it are indestructible by others. This means all your builds are safe, as long as you keep that beacon fueled up. This also ensures the land doesn't stay occupied if the owner is not active anymore and it also gives people incentive to play the game and keep everything up. 7) Portals. The main means of transportation in Boundless is portals. Just like the ones found in Valve's Portal. They're just awesome. Imagine having your house on a planet, and the bedroom is on a different one. It's that easy. Just walk into the portal and go out on the other side. 8) Planets. Everyone loves the idea of planets. Different places to go, with different flora and fauna (although there's not much diversity at this stage yet). But all those planets have a purpose, not just for the sake of it. There are 3 planets per region. Every planet has a level of difficulty which affects the level of mobs, the speed at which you mine and also the richness of resources. There are a total of 12 planets as of now, 3 for each region: Europe, Australia, US East and US West. What's crazier is each planet acts like a server. If you're from Europe, you can still visit planets from the US or Australia, but expect these to be a bit laggier than your planets. There are a lot more awesome, tinier features, but these are the things that stood out to me. Again, the game is in it's early stages, so not a lot of players around which makes the game a bit boring at some point. But you can still meet people and have fun. Also because of the fact there aren't many people around, those who are are usually very nice and polite. Everyone's keen to help new players and build a family that will carry on through the main release. I'd recommend buying this game. Even if you get bored of playing it, make sure you keep an eye on it's development because it's gonna be some big and eventually, you'll buy it anyway. Take care and hope to see you in game!   Update Sept 2018 - Launched. Oh dear, if you read the early access review and the comments below you will see that I felt the pricing would be a critical factor in its potential success and could stymy the momentum at launch. So... Disappointed to see a ( in my opinion ) overpriced launch combined with a recently introduced microtransaction system ( not just cosmetics ) and an optional subscription. Prediction - I expect to see some changes in the future to the above as I can not see this misguided launch being successful as is. Its not the time to be harming vital potential growth in a game like this where a large playerbase is beneficial /facepalm If it had been f2p with the optional sub and microtransactions it would have worked a lot better. Or b2p with cosmetic transactions. This mishmash is not going to help their cause and ultimately will just affect its success. Very sad to say I dont feel very hopeful about this. You are either riding the success wave or your forever chasing it if you fall off. Perception is everything. --------------------------------------------------------- I am genuinely gobsmacked with this game. I have held off for a good while due to it being: 1. early access. 2. what looks like an expensive minecraft clone. But, The trailers look so damn good and combined with the 20% sale on steam and a bout of insomnia I took the plunge and got it. I was ready to mash that refund button at 1hr 59mins if needed with my early access hating thumb....First of all you choose from a small selection of placeholder characters to start the game. No customisation options are in at the moment.(see comments for some info on future plans) Then the adventure begins. Initially it was pretty much as I expected. After the astonishing first look in game at the portals (genuinely amazing) from the staging area it progressed into Minecrafty like gameplay consisting of mining, exploring, crafting and building with great looking scenery and a much ignored feature in a lot of modern games, decent ambient sounds which really crank up the immersion. After 15 hours or so of enjoyable gameplay, I felt fairly self sufficient. So after setting up my little home by a lovely lake set into the side of a hill I decided it was time to go exploring. What I found is what I believe sets this game apart and took it to another level. I found an entryway into its incredible interworld spanning portal system. I saw the potential of it once I found a portal in someones home leading to what they called the "capital" (I think its called Moebius Manor on the starter world I am on). There I found an enormous interconnected hub of cities, shops, landmarks, statues and a never ending range of strange creations. I can only imagine the 1000s of hours it must have taken to create this. It was like living D&D Planescape for those that have read/played it. I had found sigil! Running thro a portal into a shop, then passing on into someones garden on a different planet, then finding myself in a medieval castle on yet another world. Amazing. Now these portals, you can craft them, place them, link them across worlds (yes the game is not on a single world but across many). One shot use portals or fueled portals which remain active as long as you keep them fueled with shards. You could set up a shop in a cavern under a mountain, link the doorway to a portal, and open the other end to a door on a road in a settlement, giving you access to other players and also living your secret life as a hobbit away from civilisation. Some of the highlights for me so far - A great (but currently awkward to use in some ways when underground) land claiming system, lovely visual storage methods, a great looking character upgrade system (skill points) which by the looks of it will promote specialisation when leveling the character, grappling, the amazing portal system, its runs pretty damn well. 20 years of just online pc gaming, and countless years spent on anything game related before that means I very rarely am surprised by games now and more usually I am disappointed but I have to say this one genuinely left me gobsmacked. Its potential is enormous. Its price could cause it some issues tho depending how it is priced at release. It needs a healthy community to thrive. If it gets it, that will be something to see. Edit - Final thoughts: A lot of changes are happening with the game and some features are not fleshed out fully but from what I have seen so far I think it would be worth buying at release if it continues on its current course. Be aware that presently, concurrent player count is very low so expect to experience a lot of solo time. I cant recommend early access to anyone. But I certainly would say stick it on your wishlist and keep an eye on this one. I will update the review if anything changes my mind, or it gets released. edit - clarity.

  This may actually be my first review on Steam - in the 8 years I've been active here. I'm an old-timer... from the late 70s, and I have a pretty long and diverse Steam catalog - in addition to owning a ton of games across console platforms. My kids were the ones who got me interested in games like Minecraft. So this is where I begin my Boundless review. Being completely bored of Minecraft, and hoping for something "more", I branched out. Boundless was something I randomly found on Steam - and decided to go for it. And I'm SO glad I did. The level of immersion, the gameplay, the graphics and attention to audio detail & fidelity... all AMAZING, and done professionally. Boundless has sucked me in BIG TIME. Way, way more than Minecraft or something like Creativerse could ever offer. I'm still relatively new to the game, having logged in 6-7 hours so far. But those hours have been so entertaining and rewarding. There is always an Objective to meet, a Level up allowing new skills, etc. So gratifying and with great pacing. Understood that this game is still in Early Access, but the amount of things that you can do right now is SO completely worth it. I began not having a clue what I was doing... slowly learning as I went. Currently, my character is holed up in a cavern that I created, overlooking a bog at the side of a huge mountain. There is flora and fauna aplenty... Awesome eye-candy at 4K resolution. For me, the best part of this game is its ability to easily suck you into the entire experience. it's all about immersion. The attention to detail and visual/audio fidelity is what really makes the game shine through. Best moments so far... Mining deep into a mountain, I occassionally heared what I thought was thunder, followed by an occassion explosion. After a couple of times, I decided to check it out. Running back to the entrance of the mine and looking up to the sky, as I heard another roaring sound. To my amazement. there it was. A meteorite.. streaming down to the plant's surface. Getting louder and louder. I watched it crash not far from my "claimed" bog house (was very nervous for a few moments). So cool. And just like that, it was time to put the mining hammer away and explore the new meteor site! While I won't tell you what happened next, I will say that the subsequent moments were completely unexpected, nail-biting and just completely cool. Again, it's all about the experience, the story that you're creating as you go. The immersion. To me, that's what a great game is all about. Boundless is an awesome experience. I already love this game. I am really hoping to see this continually expand over time. It's a terrific game right now, but the promise of even better things is really there. I hope we're in for the long-haul with Boundless. So hat's off to you, Wonderstruck devs and designers. Boundless is TOP NOTCH in my book. Highly recommended.

  [b]I've updated my review with new content, scroll down to where it says Updated on 09-13-2018.[/b] [b]TLDR;[/b] As long as there is a feature to aquire Cubits faster than other players can produce it by just playing the game, the game is to me at least Pay 2 Win. [b]Original Review:[/b] Since the game has launched the game reset all its stats. I used to have well over 300hrs played, but since the game launched officially it has me logged in at .5hrs or so. Please dont let this disuade you from reading this warning. This game is not what the developers promised and its a slap in the face. Let me tell you why. This review is not about a good game or a bad game, its about shady developer practices when it comes to delivering a product then cripling it to get even more money out of you... This game is [b]$39.99[/b]. When you pay any amount for a game, now-a-days, you could expect 1 or 2 menus with a couple of extra cosmetics at an additional cost. I am OK with that. As the game walks you through the tutorial, you get presented with a Reward. This reward provides you with 25 Coins, a small amount of XP and 60 Cubits. Keep these values in mind, we are going into it in a moment. As part of the game tutorial, you are taken to use The Exchange, which is their microtransaction store. The first part of the tutorial shows you how to buy Plots. In order to create your settlement, you need to buy a Plot, to put stuff in it... well guess what, the first plot, is a piece of manure, wood plot, its give given to you "free" it's not free, it costs 60 Cubits, which you have now as part of the Reward you were given. [b]Plots[/b]: In this panel you can buy plots of "land" to build your stuff on it. The CHEAPO option is called Plot Wood Coffer, it includes 2 plots to build for 60 Cubits. The more plots, the more cubits, the more land you get. so for example, a Plot Iron Coffer is 10 plots for 300 Cubits... Would this be fair on a game you just paid $40 to play? No. [b]Extras[/b]: Extras are a type of cosmetics. Additional Character Slots 600 Cubits, skill Set reset Token 800 Cubits. If you paid $40 for this game should you need to shell out more money to do any of this? shouldn't this be included as part of a functional game? I mean if you are going ot charge, be reasonable. 800 Cubits to change my appearance its re.tar.ded. [b]Club[/b]: Club or Gleam Club gives you some extras that should have been in the game already (and if not at least be there for the people that helped fund this game during EA...) You get to buy Coloured Chat, Emojis, Beacon Auto-Fuel, Advanced Tinting and Gleam Glyph for a period of time, each with a separate cost. 30 days its $4.99, 90 days its $12.99 180 days its $24.99. So basically this game cost you $40 bucks, you need $25 more to get whatever poor excuse to suck money out of you, because the devs are doing a money grab. [b]Cubit[/b]: The Cubit tab is for buying Cubits, the currency for buying all this crap on the $40 game you just bought. 500 Cubits will cost you $4.99 so basically if you needed another Character Slot, you would have to buy the next tier at $9.99 for 1050 Cubits, so you can spend 600 Cubits on a new toon... you just paid $40 bucks. Now its $10 more... 2400 Cubits is $20. 5000 Cubits is $39.99, 10,000 Cubits is $75 and 15000 Cubits is $100. This is not the game I expected. I don't know what happened down the road, dunno where the devs got money hungry, because they put a lot of effort including this microtransaction store in the tutorial, not even at the end of the tutorial, they did it right after you start the game I think the 3rd or 4th thing you learn. IF this had been a free game, I can understand the need of it. But this is a paid game. Give me a full game or give me my money back so I can buy a game that offers all it has in the price. As if that is not enough, the game is buggy AF. How buggy? Well when you are going through the tutorial of the game, the part where you open your reward and get those shiny 60 cubits that you will spend on the CHEAPO Plot, the game crashes. It crashes all the way to your desktop. A game you paid $40 added $10 for additional character slots, and maybe dropped another $20 bucks in cubits, to you know get ahead and get a decent plot. I tried to return this game, but I bought it back in 2017 and I had more than 5hrs played so Steam denied my request. Do not buy this game, there are better crafting games out there with way better PVP or at least execution. Seriously try Portal Knights, or Worlds Adrift... So disappointed. [b]Update[/b] as of 09/13/2018 : I want to address some points that have come on the comments of this review. 1. Pay 2 Win or Not Pay 2 Win: I feel the game is [b]Pay 2 Win[/b] in a way, it is very [b]Pay 2 Build[/b], since crafting on your own is not going to get you very far unless you over grind yourself to kingdom come. Even if you get paid a "salary" every time you level or finish some "cheevos" its really not enough if you are expanding your footprint, eventually you will get stuck and if you are addicted to the game you will have to pay more. The game should not charge you for expansion plots period, why? because you already paid a premium up front for the game, and if building and expanding is a primordial part of this game, it means it an essential mechanic. You shouldnt be charged to get anything faster than a non paying player, because you already paid for the game. 2. The amount of Cubits you make is not at an accelerated rate. Yes you make some cubits back, but as part of my experiment I have been buying plots and spending cubits here and there and unless you put a serious grind. There are 2 currencies in the game, there are Coins and there are Cubits. You make a lot of coins, but you make random Cubit amounts. Do the math. 3. The amount of menus is killing the game. There are menus inside menus, with tabs and more menus and just when you think you got to the end of the menus, there are more menus. 4. The world feels Dull and boring. I already found mechanics in the game that can be exploitable I was able to do something to someone and literally take all they had from their home. It dont think its an exploit but the beacon mechanic can be exploited, maybe its intended to work that way, but it basically slaves you to stay in the game so you can feed your beacon fuel. I grinded a ton of fuel thinking I could add a lot of time to it, and the amount of time you add after the initial burn is not a lot. Maybe 17hrs per fuel block. I paid $55 for this game when I bought the bundle back when the game was EA. I got a miserable amount of "extras" and I didnt appreciate that the very first steps was learning to use the cash shop. I think the devs should re-think how they introduce the player to the game mechanics, and leave the damned cash shop for the very end. I still dont recommend the game, until they change the plots mechanic, I rather be able to craft the plots than buy them outright. Until they change that I can't recommend the game. A developer wrote to someone here that they want to have money to expand the game, and I think they should do that on their own merit for the game they are charging... or refund the game and make it free-to-play and crunch it. Get one cosmetic group and call it the Dev package and sell it one time for $10 but dont make it a recurring event, if you are going to do that charge a subscription for the game and call it a day.
