The biggest differences between VII and VIIR revolve around streamlining the game play and, of course, the added VR scenes. There are added 3D scenes to replace some sections that were previously 2D and the VR segments are completely new scenes. The additions are welcome, but they don't warrant a remake on their own. However, I greatly enjoy the streamlined game play. - There are no longer random encounters when moving around the world map. These encounters didn't pose a challenge and simply served as a forced wait as you loaded in, mindlessly fought, then loaded out. - All character's HP completely restores after each dungeon fight. This eliminates tedious trips to town just to replenish HP and SP. -The new combat system does take longer than the old (which might annoy some people), but the old was about setting up combos in advance then just repeating them over and over. The new system adds action points which you spend to use different moves each turn; it allows fights to have some variety. -Items now have 'levels'. Before a leather bracelet was forever the same with the same stats and bonuses. The new system means you can find a level 1 leather bracelet then later find a level 2 and the level 2, although still the same item, would have better stats. This prevents you playing for hours without changing gear at all. -You can now allocate some points to different skills vs. them being completely predetermined with every level up. -Most importantly of all is easy access to 'hidden' story segments. Before you'd have to do certain quests and complete certain tasks (namely getting shares high enough) to unlock different scenes and get the good ending. Accidentally missing one scene would ruin the entire run through. This was very tedious to keep track of in every Neptunia game. Now you are given access to all scenes and the 'true' ending without having to do anything in particular. Allowing players to focus on the story more than a hidden to-do list. Oh, and the new graphics are a pleasant change as well. If you haven't played VII yet, you might as well skip it and play this instead. If you have played it, but want to experience the story again without some of the tediousness , then grab this on a sale.

Mom came inside my room while I was using the VR mode, she stared for a while and then said "at least you're talking to a girl now" and then left the room. 10/10 would make her proud again

-This review is from the perspective of someone who does not have a VR headset. -I will talk about the gameplay aspects through my experience on PS4 alone, but I will update the review if there is any glaring changes in that aspect.
Gameplay
As someone that has played through the PS4 version of both VII and VIIR, I can say this is my best experience so far with this game. With that being said, let us talk about one of the biggest changes, the battle mechanics. VIIR features a new AP combat system that can seem disappointing at first when compared to the original VII, but quickly picks up mid-way through the game. After progressing with this new system, it begins to feel truly better than its predecessor with the freedom to perform many different actions per turn. In my opinion it feels like it just makes the game easier by the time you reach end game. Speaking of easier, that is what this game entails. Everything in this game seems streamlined and some people will hate it and others will love it. One of the most noticable instances is not having to grind throughout the story. The next streamlined part is the game only having one ending rather than three. This was the only major change that I highly disliked as one of VII's endings was good on its own just to be condensed with the true ending in this. The next change that is massively apparent and one that I question the developers on, is the lack of the enjoyable DLC characters from VII. Lastly, I have to cover the "VR" scenes added that are a major selling point. To me, these are just a nice little addition that makes you feel more connected to the goddesses. The reason I put VR in quotations is due to the only interactablity in the mode being a nod yes or no to the goddesses. I feel no need to pick up a VR headset to fully enjoy these scenes. Overall, I feel that the gameplay in this remake is a tier up in many ways.
-Graphics & Performance
One of the biggest reliefs right from the beginning is the glaring bloom from VII does not make a return. All dungeons and rendered cutscenes seem much clearer now. As for performance wise, I am having to run the game at 1080p as the game does not support 1440p or DSR, which is a disappointment. Other than that, I stay at a constant 60fps (locked) which is a massive improvement over the PS4 Pro's locked 30fps. It is worth keeping in mind that I do run a higher end system with an i7 6700k and GTX 1080.
-Bugs & Issues
So far, I have not ran into any crashes or freezing issues, but I have ran into a few bugs. First, the music loops are not triggering at the right time during scenes. It plays the entire track and then repeats itself from the beginning which can be distracting at times. Next, is a visual bug of weapon attack ranges appearing whitish rather than the PS4 version's orange to red range. The last bug that I found is the lip sync on some scenes seem to be a second off and seems to randomly happen. I have run into no issues in the available "VR" scenes, which in my case can be played without a headset.
-Conclusion
If you have not played VII since launch and/or enjoy the Neptunia franchise, I can highly recommend this remake. I had fun on my playthrough on PS4 and I am enjoying it again on PC now. If you are a new-comer to the series, I believe you can piece together the story up to this point and you will get to experience one of the better battle mechanics in the mainline series (in my perspective at least). Happy Nepping!

"New graphics engine" and yet there is very little better than VII (and lacking compared to 4GO.) They lumped all the post process together so you can't get rid of the atrocious FXAA without losing all the other post process effects. The result is if you run the game at 4k it looks like someone dumped water on your screen because it is still applying crappy post process AA. If you disable all post process the game looks super dark because they have some extreme bloom effect instead of real lighting. The graphics also appear to be upscaled to 4k. I failed to see any obvious improvement over the previous iteration especially considering you could use a mod to run the previous game properly in 4k. See below. The VR portion, on a high clock gtx 1080 card with HTC vive is the most choppy VR experience I've had and guess what? There are literally NO settings for the VR portion. They put subtitles way at the bottom of the viewing area where they can't be seen because HMD are not meant for you to turn your eyes only your head [turns out you can move the position of the subtitles by constantly holding the right controller stick up but it doesn't tell you this anywhere.] You can't move around. Even relatively near objects are rendered poorly and the overall detail level is low. If you set audio to surround sound, the voice audio for something in front comes out the rear speakers during VR scenes. Seeing the familiar Neptunia game characters in VR is really cool, so it's sad to see something with such potential fall flat. The game just isn't worth buying just for the VR and yet they had to mess up the core game, too. New combat system: the result is you have to hit a lot of extra buttons just to do normal things like end a character's turn. Instead of saving several combos, you create a new one at the start of each battle and have to edit it part by part to do something different. In the original version, you could just create 3 combo paths and change them only when needed. On top of that the SP to use special abilities builds up during the fight from zero. Basically it means you don't use abilities because the fights are generally over before you get enough SP to even start using them. Considering that a lot of the fun of Neptunia games are the amusing animated sequences for abilities, this was a particularly dumb 'improvement.' The game is missing many things that are in Megadimension Neptunia VII including DLC characters. I have a fairly high tolerance for half-arsed games when they are Neptune series but this just blew past my limit entirely. I have to reluctantly conclude it's a cash grab with the VR as the bait. EDIT: If you have a 4k screen, VII with the mod is absolutely a better game. Here are a couple comparison screenshots. Open them up large to see. Even the desktop icon for VII is better btw. https://imgur.com/a/DynMjL8

Don't botther with VIIR its a dumbed-down version with alot less content then even the original VII do yourself a favor and just get the Original VII instead. https://store.steampowered.com/app/460120/Megadimension_Neptunia_VII/ VIIR has None of the DLC Characters from VII and their side stories are not in VIIR VIIR has no alternate endings so you only get 1 ending. Less story content as well. An inferior battle system with a less story content and all you get in return is pointless VR content. I'd say pass VIIR Only reason for VIIR really is the VR Headset cutscenes. (Which are very few) Differences ------------------------------------------------------------ Megadimension Neptunia VII Has New Game+ Has Multiple Save Slots Has the extra story based dlc characters God Eater, Million Arthur, Nitroplus etc.. Has Multiple Endings Has better graphics filtering and lighting quality for the Bloom effects ------------------------------------------------------------ Megadimension Neptunia VIIR No New Game+ Only ONE save file no save slots Does not have any of the DLC side stories and characters. Does not have alternate endings. Has an inferior battle system Does not have Bloom effect and has lower graphics filtering and lighting quality (Although some old dungeons were given re design with higher quality textures and transparent textures) Redesigned HUD Other party members follow you in dungeons. And the only good thing about it is that it has VR cutscenes of the Goddesses and thats basically it.....(Only a few scenes are actually in VR) TLDR unless you are interested in VR Headset cutscenes VIIR is not worth it at all and the original Neptunia VII is the superior version. Edit: Currently the PC port of VIIR is filled with Bugs and Glitches, another reason to get the Original VII above this demake with less content.

Dumbed Down Version of Neptunia VII, Plus VR Gimmicks

RPG Element
Compared to the orginal 2015 game, this remake retained all of the original cutscenes, with the only noticeable difference being the completely reworked battle system. However, this is also where my problems arise: The game is too easy compared to past Neptunia games to a point it almost feels like we are being treated like toddlers.

No difficulty adjustment option
Enemies hit harder, but now you recover full HP after each battle, which makes dungeon crawling ridiculously easy
Most of the enemies I encountered can be one-shotted (I did not grind), the battles last for 10-20 seconds.
Bosses are pretty fragile too and doesn't hit that much harder than peons, you can win just by spamming basic attacks.
In addition, this game removed all the ending options, with the previous True End being the sole ending in this game, as well as introducing an autosave feature. Overall, this game tried to take care of the players too much to an extent that it's neither rewarding nor fun to play.
VR Element
If you want this game for the VR, don't get your hopes up. You have VR scenes with nepnep at the end of each chapter, plus some more scenes at the player room, but the RPG game is not VR compatible. They could of just sold it as a DLC for VII or as a standalone minigame, but instead they used this gimmick as a main selling point for this game. As you can see from the screenshot previews, the graphics for the VR isn't at all detailed. The room in particular looks like a simple CAD model. I just can't find any realism or immersiveness in it.
Boring Technical Aspect
This game doesn't properly support 1440p or 4K. Despite them being selectable from the config menu, the game is still rendered at 1080p and the graphics look very blurry on a 4K monitor. Idea Factory has always done a poor job when it comes to higher resolution support, in particular compared to similar JRPG publishers such as KOEI TECMO. I've yet to experience any stutters in the game mentioned by other players, it could be becuase it was patched in recent updates. I did experience crashes in a few rare instances, but the autosave feature means I've nothing to lose. Finally, having framerate locked at 60fps my GTX 1080 Ti was at 33% workload. Therefore, a mid range 4 TFLOPs card (GTX 970/RX 380 or better) should have no problem to game at 60fps high settings.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I cannot recommend this game solely because the original VII game is both cheaper and more fun to play with. This game, being a 2018 release, doesn’t offer improvements in graphics nor gaming experience. In fact, the graphics of the Neptunia series has not changed since the original game, and I still recognise many recycled dungeons and monsters from mk2 (That was in 2011).

FINAL UPDATE (4th june, 2022) *Keep in mind that this is my personal completion time* Current playtime: 1008 hours Story playtime: 49 hours (story done without DLC items) Total time for 100% completion (achievements): 113 hours Current post-completion time: 895 hours Current Max Level: 539 (Neptune) Current Technology Level (Rank Challenge): 830 Time to reach Technology Level (Rank Challenge) 1000: - New Pros : -The grind and Rank Challenges are still keeping VIIR a fresh experience after 600 more hours of playtime. I now give this game a 9.8/10 instead of a 9/10 ----------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE #1 (14 Aug, 2020) *Keep in mind that this is my personal completion time* Current playtime: 444 hours Story playtime: 49 hours (story done without DLC items) Total time for 100% completion (achievements): 113 hours Current post-completion time: 331 hours Current Max Level: 454 (Neptune) Current Technology Level (Rank Challenge): 215 New Pros : -Not everyone likes it, but the grind is really great after the game's completion. All my city investments (public relation, technology, and commerce) are completed, all of Neptune's Character Challenges are completed (I still have 15 characters to do), and all the characters have their skills unlocked. -Rank Challenges are still very fun. They keep adding difficulty even with the post-game gear. However, they're becoming really strong with a technology level of 215. -The Guild's quests were surprisingly fun to do and they give nice rewards. New Cons : -Neplunker, one of the mini-game, is way too difficult for people that aren't good at platforming. I've completed the one in Hyperdimension easily but the one in Zero Dimension seems almost impossible. Therefore, I won't be able to get the infinite sprint and complete my final quest. I now give this game a 9.2/10 instead of a 9/10 ----------------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL REVIEW (26 Jun, 2019) *Keep in mind that this is my personal completion time* Current playtime: 130 hours Story playtime: 49 hours (story done without DLC items) Total time for 100% completion (achievements): 113 hours Current post-completion time: 17 hours Current Max Level: 168 (Neptune) Current Technology Level (Rank Challenge): approximately 85 Pros : -Better graphics than VII -VIIR got new songs
Ex: Steamax boss fight
-Fights and story progression are easier with the new battle system -They fixed
Affimojas’ cape in his boss battle. NEXT forms can now attack him without breaking it.
-No random encounters in the world map -There’s more cutscenes in the game than VII -The level cap is 999 (1-99 (each level is giving stats), 100-999 (each level is giving 1BP)) -Lots of content after finishing the story (unfinished quests, colosseum, Rank challenges, High-Risk bounties, and Character challenges) -The scouts system allows you to get materials easier and faster for crafting Plans (it uses real time, but you can speed it up with an item) -Rank challenges are a great way to constantly have a challenge. At first, those fights are limited at Lv. 40 but when you beat it, ranks can go higher with Online Rank challenges (the cap seems to be Lv. 99999). Higher rank = tougher enemies -The Player Room is a place where you can watch the VR scenes and events from the game. Also, you have access to the official soundtrack and some artworks from the story. -The autosave sometimes saved my progression before crashing (does not apply for Rank Challenges though) -A lot of VR scenes were funny Cons : -VR support is not working or is really bad with pretty much all headsets (I couldn’t test the scenes in Virtual Reality myself, instead I watched them on my monitor) -Because of the new battle system, it might not feel like a Neptunia game for some -No DLC characters that could potentially give even more replayability to the game. Instead, the DLCs are focused around weapons and Inventory expansions -No multiple saves slots (that’s because of the autosave) -That doesn’t seem like much, but the in-game playtime counter is broken I give this game a 9/10

The VR content is the reason I bought this game. It's also the reason I requested a refund and recommend against buying it. The game struggles to even launch into VR properly. When it does launch you are forced to remain stationary, or your vision is disabled, which defeats the point of VR. I really wanted this, and bought it despite having already played VII, but it completely fails to deliver on its promises. If you have played VII there is absolutely no reason to get VIIR; if you have not played VII then you are better off with it than VIIR. Don't buy VIIR.
