Learning should be an adventure

Dialogue changes from English to Japanese as you learn and progress in this comedic RPG backed by professional Japanese voice acting.

Learn Japanese RPG: Hiragana Forbidden Speech is aimed at anime fans with little to no Japanese ability, but any beginner may enjoy and benefit, even those who have studied Japanese and hiragana before. This is a full introductory Japanese course and adventure all in one. We've made the game we wanted to play when we were first learning Japanese.

What will I learn?

  • How to read, write, and pronounce hiragana

Hiragana is a set of characters used to write Japanese words.

  • Over 240 common Japanese words used in anime

  • Enough grammar to understand basic Japanese sentences

How will I learn?

Mild Immersion

Our frustration with other Japanese learning games is that while they teach hiragana and words, they rarely (if ever) use these learnings in actual conversations. Almost everything is out of context. A random character, word, or sentence here or there. On the other hand, trying to learn Japanese by watching anime or reading manga is overwhelming (for a beginner).

We try to strike a balance between these two worlds. This game strives for “Mild Immersion.” We want to immerse you in Japanese as much as possible, but only beginner Japanese. We want you to feel confident that any Japanese that comes your way is something you’ve been taught and are capable of understanding at a basic level.

Small Step Immersion

This game also strives for “Small Step Immersion.” We want to immerse you in Japanese one small step at a time. After learning a new hiragana, you will soon learn words spelled with that hiragana and immediately start seeing and hearing those words in dialogue and battle. Slowly, but surely, your vocabulary and reading ability will grow as the game gently immerses you, more and more.

We believe context, immersion, and fun are key to effective learning. This game isn't just an RPG with Japanese flashcard-type battles. It is much more.

How this all works in practice

First, you will learn hiragana by using them in battles. A hiragana appears and you type in the related roumaji (English character) to attack foes. Each hiragana can be leveled up. The higher its level, the less often it will appear in battle.

Second, after learning a new hiragana, you will learn words spelled with that hiragana. Each word will expand your vocabulary and strengthen your grasp on the hiragana. They will also appear in battles and level up like hiragana.

Third, the game's Adaptive Dialogue System will introduce the words you learn into dialogue. Most dialogue is voiced by professional Japanese voice actors. You will hear and see how words fit together to form sentences and experience the use of words in various situations.

Fourth, there are 50+ brief in-game tutorials that will teach you word usage, basic grammar, and a number of Japanese language concepts. However, our emphasis is on learning by doing.

What is the Adaptive Dialogue System and how will it help me?

The Adaptive Dialogue System helps you learn by doing. It determines whether to show dialogue in Japanese or English based on your current knowledge. The more Japanese words and grammar you learn, the more dialogue will appear in Japanese!

For example, consider the following sentence: "doko iku?" (Where are we going?)

If you don't know one of the words "doko" (where) or "iku" (go, going), then this sentence will be shown in English. This is to avoid frustrating you with content you haven't yet learned.

However, if you know both words, it will be written in Japanese hiragana.

Pressing a button displays the "roumaji" of the sentence. Roumaji uses the English alphabet to describe Japanese sounds. A second press displays the English translation.

Features

  • Professional Japanese voice acting (Over 4000 lines of spoken dialogue)

  • Teaches Japanese starting from zero

  • Teaches all the most common hiragana

  • Teaches over 240+ Japanese words commonly used in anime

  • Teaches word usage and Japanese grammar (over 50 tutorials)

  • Adaptive Dialogue System gets you reading Japanese fast without being overwhelmed

  • Real-time battles and humorous dialogue make learning fast and fun

  • Gradual Reveal Dialogue System lets you conveniently check your reading comprehension

  • All Hiragana Mode lets advanced adventurers immerse themselves instantly in a deeper Japanese experience

  • Battle drills can be disabled at any time

  • Level up controls allow you to adjust the pace of your learning

  • Disable automatic voice over to practice reading comprehension easily

  • 16-20 hours of gameplay
  • Tremendous replay value. Game adjusts Japanese content to your level from the very beginning

Fun so far honestly given my age I'm not sure i can make it really useful in life anymore. But at this point its more about finally overcoming something i have tried to do on and off for years. and this RPG is by far the funnest way i have ever tried to learn. see this isn't even the first Japanese learning RPG i tried. But unlike with Learn Japanese to survive where it is a standard turned based RPG this one has a s more ATB akin to classic final fantasy or Chrono Trigger, you learn characters and or words by typing the meanings out in English and if you take to long The monster will just beat you up, it really drives you to learn those characters and words fast I hope i can find many more RPG'S in this format will done guys! hell i'm wondering if there is mods for this game that teaches you more words lol will for sure be buying a katakana and or kanji version of this game

Absolutely obsessed so far!! It was saddening when i hit the end of the demo, so far it's been playing out like the quality of a good trash isekai with interesting twists (I'm only about 2 hours in though), which to be honest, for a educational game is absolutely incredible, I am genuinely waking up in the mornings looking forward to playing this game. I'd absolutely love it if you could add a katakana option! It would be incredibly useful. Also while the music is enjoyable for the most part (even going so far as to say that some soundtracks are absolute bops!), the title screen music and some of the sound effects I am rather not enjoying, sounding compressed or just bad. Another thing- Ben, in the village where the full game starts after the demo, claims there is no singular "they" in English. I know you were using it as a point to talk about Japanese, but it's incorrect, you can use singular "they" in situations such as "someone lost their coat" or "I don't know who this person is, but they're waving at me". So "they" is traditionally used as a impersonal pronoun for when you don't know someone's gender, but recently it's becoming more accepted to be used as a personal pronoun for those choosing to go by they/them, I can totally understand why you might not want to change anything in accordance with recent language changes, but I appreciate any consideration either way. I've just started though and will likely update as I play, I just wanted to write this review to give my thoughts so far. Thanks for making learning so damn interesting! Edit: While not necessary, I think a way to track exactly where you need to go like a quest log would be a great edition! There have been a time or two (so far) where i didn't necessarily know where to go because i accidentally skipped dialogue or the instructions were a little vague. So mostly my fault, but I think it would be nice quality of life. I also love the sense of urgency that the fights have!! Definitely one of the most engaged I've felt in a rpg fight! Also I like how if you enter in alternative hiragana for words it still accepts, even if it doesn't seem massive, I really appreciated it. Thanks :) Edit: the hermit seems to comment on the "they" issue. I can see how someone would think "they" is only plural.

The first japanese learning game that is actually fun to play and designed in a way that learns something. The price is ok for what you are getting. I would love to see an option to show kanji+furigana in dialogues. And also more content for intermediate learners.

I am only 1 hour in and I already think this is the best game for learning Japanese. I would consider myself a upper beginner in Japanese before playing this game, but it feels tailored for anyone under intermediate (I believe there are less than 300 words?). It feels like they could easily expand on the words. I'm not sure why they chose some common words but not others (I believe you learn the word for "Mother" pretty early, but "Father" isn't in the game). Even though I have a few negatives above. I've never in my life thought "I need to leave a positive review on this game" both in such a short amount of time and constantly while playing it. When I think of a video game that'll help teach a language this is EXACTLY what I always wanted and tried to describe to people. My biggest complaint is that I didn't hear about it during the kickstarter.

I’ve finished the demo - and loved it so much that I bought the early access game. The story is engaging and the characters are interesting. Overall the game is really cute. I love the voice acting! The sentences taught in the game are commonly used in Anime, which I’m not sure if it helps with everyday life as much… but definitely will help me understand more when watching anime. There’s enough instruction in the game clarifying when something is not polite to say in everyday life, so that’s very helpful. This game gets the most important things right: making learning not boring, which motivates me to keep going. As someone who just started learning Japanese, I was looking for something exactly like this! I’ve shared this game with friends to nudge them into learning Japanese together with me haha. I’m terms of usability.. it think it works great for the purpose! Since I’m using the steam deck I had to fiddle around so the keyboard doesn’t block some important content during battle scenes. Other than that, everything else worked well.

So thoughtfully and cleverly composed to be both educational and fun! I downloaded this game as a supplement to my beginner Japanese language app because I wanted to learn the kana as well. But I found that many of the grammar and vocabulary lessons in the game were far more intuitive than the app I started with =) I love the learning style of gradually introducing more Japanese words in dialogue along the way, so that you really feel like you can participate in a conversation by the end. The story, which I sort of expected to be just a throw-away framework for the lessons, was actually totally cute and hilarious, with lots of tongue-in-cheek humor, interesting settings and remarkably excellent voice acting. I don't want to say anything bad about this! It's clearly a labor of love by the developers. If I had one thing to look out for though, it's that the learn speed is pretty fast (you can adjust the settings some, but even in the slowest settings, new words are coming at you sometimes before you feel you're ready to move on.) But at least you're able to do additional play-throughs after the story ends with your existing vocabulary in tact, so I've found this has been a good way to review everything again. If you like old school video games and are at all interested in learning some Japanese, buy this game! It is worth it on every level.

Wonderful game!! I've been really enjoying it, and I've been learning a lot!! I've started to recognize a few words in the real world when playing games or watching anime and stuff, it's so satisfying!! It genuinely has real world applications, and it feels like every hour that goes into learning is an hour well spent. The game is very personal when it comes to how fast you learn. at any time you can reduce or increase the encounters, and you can set how frequently words repeat and stuff. It makes it so no matter what level you can set everything to how fast you personally learn. also, the music??? Holy cow there are some proper BANGERS! Like just outta nowhere you are reading some Japanese dialogue on a boat and then BAM. this insane metal music comes in and it's like WOAH, or you are chilling in the caves talking with some lizards and then this super groovy techno beat rolls past and it's like OOH! so props there, there were times I just waited ages on the dialogue to hear the music lol It has some super funny moments, and it's been a blast learning! It's not the fastest way to learn, but out of everything else I've tried it's by FAR the most fun. I seriously look forward to learning every single day. very fun and useful, highly recommend it! It's well worth it if you want to have fun while learning Japanese.

This is the type of game that I've been looking for: a game that really helps in teaching you a language with every day vocabulary and grammar included. I have studied some beginner's Japanese before, but I was usually taught more formal language and I didn't fully understand some grammar or sentence structures until this game. The in game lessons and repetition are fun, memorable, and really help explain concepts and help you learn them. I've actually gone back after completing the game to review some lessons to help me. The game itself is fun, the characters funny and enjoyable, the story itself also quite interesting, and the voice acting is really well done, easy to follow and great to listen to. 10/10, would recommend and have recommended already!
