Context: I'm an enormous Doctor Who fan, played this the night of release, as I did The Edge of Time, The Eternity Clock and The Lonely Assassins. This game is a direct port of the VR only release, The Edge of Time - and it seriously shows. I made it through the second chapter before uninstalling, refunding the game. The game is largely walking around looking at the environment, however the brightness of the game makes it very difficult to see anything. This isn't as much of a problem in the VR version of the game, since you're directly immersed, but with the slow move speed it just feels bad. The game consists of navigating from Room A and Puzzle A, to Room B (or Environment B) and Puzzle B. The puzzles require you to have picked up objects along the way, and if you happened to miss one of them, you're SOL and need to backtrack scanning the (very sparse) environment. Additionally, the first room is *incredibly* crowded and difficult to parse through all the junk, so you'll be hearing Jodie Whittaker repeat the same three voice lines on a cycle every 30ish seconds. Mechanics are poorly explained, so you're basically left brute forcing everything until you stumble onto the solution - you're given the Sonic Screwdriver, however there is no indication when it does anything so you're just left to wave it near any object that seems mildly technical. If you want to experience this game, it was alright when I played it in VR, but I'd avoid this port at all costs, especially at a $25 price tag. If you want a solid Doctor Who Video Game, the crown still goes to The Eternity Clock, despite the age and some clunk it has. Additionally, at the time of release, this game is incredibly clunky - controls are poor with no options to change them, and some of the controls are entirely unexplained. (This includes options like mouse sensitivity, which resulted in me needing to raise my DPI to maximum in order to have any semblance of control)

No way to change keybinds, no way to change mouse sensibility. In fact there are almost 0 settings. The game's story seems interesting but... quite a few bugs in just the first few minutes. I fear for the remainder of the game. For example, wanted to do like every companion, go around the TARDIS to enjoy the bigger on the inside effect. Instead, outside the TARDIS, when I started going around it, my character stopped and the Doctor began talking. The game was actually considering me inside the TARDIS... There is also the first planet you land on, when outside the TARDIS, if you try to see the interior through the door, you will see the forest skybox INSIDE the TARDIS. I also opened a box before I was told to, so my game didn't register my action and I had to restart. Oh yeah I forgot, you can't save the game manually.

It's a VR game rather hastily ported to handheld/PC, and it shows. The animations, the jank... if this proves to be too high a barrier for you, then consider yourself lucked out of enjoying The Edge of Reality to the fullest. If you find yourself adjusting to the controls more or less, though? You're in for a treat (if you're a Doctor Who fan). As a game, it's a decent platformer / adventure sim with hidden achievement objectives and beautiful stages. As a Doctor Who story, it's a sprawling epic with plenty of fan-pleasing moments (the Classic era menagerie that is the pot-breaking manor, the witty commentary AI spaceship straight out of Season 16-17 / Douglas Adams, etc). Maze Theory practically perfected the implementation of the Weeping Angels into a video game format, they did a decent job with the Cybermen... but the Daleks, oh my. No wonder they have Stormtrooper aiming in the show, take a gander at all that jank while controlling them pepper pots! The story's nothing too special, but it is pretty engaging. Jodie Whittaker, as always, gives her all and it's all down to you whether or not you enjoy her take as the Doctor (as for me, I absolutely love her). David Tennant's small role as Ten is always welcome, too -- and it turns out he has a far bigger role in proceedings than I thought! No spoilers, but there's a neat little twist that gives the otherwise generic story a neat little kick. Genuinely touching moments, who thought we'd get any of those in a 2021 Doctor Who video game? All in all, not a waste of my time. I enjoyed the four hours. It's a very short game, and it never lingers in one location for long enough (naturally, since it's not a game that accommodates exploration... ironically for a Doctor Who title). The highest praise I can give it is that The Edge of Reality should be regarded as proof of concept, that a sprawling Doctor Who game could definitely work. Take inspiration from stuff like Planescape Torment or Outer Wilds, for Rassilon's sake.

Doctor Who deserves better than this. No graphics options, minimal sound options, glitches everywhere, no mouse control on menus, audio mixing problems, the audio slider resets every time the map changes, blowing my ears out each time. All that in the space of 26 minutes? Yeah, no thanks guys.

I am very sorry, because I am a huge Dr.Who fan, but this game is a bug fest! Two examples? In the first levels there is a crane with a big magnet and you can literally pass through it. Later in the spaceship I passed through a wall and found myself in space. I hope that the switch version is not so buggy because I really want to play the game.

Honestly not a terrible game of Doctor Who. Some aspects in here actually worked good. Like the weeping angels for example, lovely. Creepy atmosphere with enjoyable dialogue. It wasn't terrible, but I can't recommend this. For the price of 24,99€, Truly a buggy mess. So ugly lighting, difficult to see environment. Weird storyline felt kind of all over the place. Certain gameplay sections are simply boring. That 10th Doctor walking animation is goofy. And I dunno feels like it tries to do too much. While at the same time, game just falls apart. No replayability it's a very limited experience. And just way too buggy for such high pricing. This is not a quality product, but it's playable. Which is that only real positive that I can say. It is playable and the weeping angels are fun. Everything else around this is a negative tho. And for 24,99€, as a Doctor Who fan: Awful. The Adventure Games from 2010 are better. I'd recommend that DW game over this one.
