It's Bejeweled. Everyone plays Bejeweled. It is like Tetris. You just waste time with it.

Best time waster of all time. Loads really fast, it's cheap and guranteed hours and hours of fun when you have nothing to do. I wouldn't be able to live without it!

Bejeweled 1, what a classic...like, really classic. Classic as in no hypercubes, no flame gems, no extra modes (Action's just a time limit, doesn't change much). No offence, but if you've been living in the biggest rock ever and you're new to match-3 games, you should probably just skip to Bejeweled 3. Not to say Bejeweld 1 is bad, it's pretty good and nostalgic, especially its music, but nowadays it's just... Meh. If you're a big Popcap fan like me, go ahead and get this or wait for a huge sale.

Bejeweled, if you've played one, you've played them all, but not really, since, as the series progressed, new game modes and mechanics were added, and there's even a spin-off in the form of Bejeweled Twist, which doesn't play like traditional Bejeweled at all (ok, you still have to match three, it's just that you don't run out of moves). Anyway, enough talking about other Bejeweled games, and let's talk about this Bejeweled game, which I got because I wanted to complete my Bejeweled collection. At this point, pretty much everyone is familiar with Bejeweled, even if they don't know it by name. The match-3 genre of casual games might very well be the quintessential casual game, with thousands of variations (or rather, copy cats) all over the world. The gameplay is quite simple: you play on a square board filled with different coloured and shaped gems, and you can swap any two adjacent gems in order to match three of the same colours. When you do so, the matched gems disappear, and new gems fall in place to replace them. The complexity in the game is that, depending on how you match the gems, you can create cascades that eliminate even more gems; also, given its random nature, there's always a risk of ending up in a situation where there's no more moves left to make, as you can't match any three gems. This game is the most basic form of the match-3 genre there is, as there's no special gems, matching 4 or more gems of the same colour only gives you slightly more points, and the game modes are only two: in Normal mode, you advance levels by filling up a bar on the bottom of the screen; this progress bar gets filled as you match gems. Higher levels require more matches, and the goal is to reach as high a score as possible before you run out of moves. Meanwhile, Time Attack starts with the progress bar halfway filled, though it decreases over time. Other than that, it plays similar to Normal mode, you fill the bar to advance levels, but in this case, running out of moves only resets the board, and game over is only reached when you run out of time. In the visual department, the game is obviously dated, it doesn't look very good on modern screens, but it's still playable. As for the soundtrack, well, there's a somewhat relaxing track that plays continuously as you play. Obviously, this is a casual game, and it's all done for a relaxing experience. Anyway, that's it for my Bejeweled review. Do I recommend it? I dunno; I'm giving it the thumbs up because it's not a bad game per se, but compared to the following entries in the franchise, it feels pretty barebones.

I like this game but DON'T BUY IT if you are buying to play. Go buy other games they are better. Bejeweled 2 has more game modes and better animations. I guess twist and 3 are also better than that and this game doesn't have some mechanics which others have.

The original game that started it all. While it doesn't have as many features as the sequels, it's still very nice to pick up once in a while. Soundtrack is very good for an early 2000's game. When I played Classic, much of the music is VERY recognizable from 2 (first few parts) and Twist (Blitz: 1 MINUTE REMAINING). Come Action mode, you won't be prepared.

It's a fun game, for what it is...I can't give a classic like Bejeweled a negative review. That being said, Bejeweled 2 Deluxe is FAR superior to this older version (Bejeweled 2 Deluxe has more gameplay modes, better graphics, etc.). Not that there is anything wrong with this version, but since the newer versions are so much better you'd basically be wasting your money buying this one. I guess if you wanted it for nostalgic reasons or you REALLY dig 800x600 resolution you could buy this...otherwise, stick to the newer versions of Bejeweled. This one is simply obsolete. Still, it's a great game for its time.
