Age of Empires 3 may never reach the fame of its predecessor, but it is undeniable that it is an excellent strategy game with many unique mechanics that will make each game different. Possibly the greatest attraction is how each civilization has something that makes them unique, the card system that thank god this Definitive Edition eliminates the need to grind to unlock them and how fun is the combat. From the point of view of someone who plays casually, this is the most fun "Age of" to play against the CPU and with friends, and the main campaign, even if it isn't as enjoyable as the one on Age of Mythologies, is super fun to complete. Specifically speaking of this definitive version, the new civilizations and general changes are very welcome to refresh the experience of the game. Possibly the most controversial are the changes to certain names that can be felt as historical revisionism, which makes feel that there is a certain inconsistency since everything that is not related to the United States has a lot of errors and inaccuracies. Leaving that aside, if you want to enjoy a game casually, this is the Age of Empires that I recommend the most. If you prefer something more competitive-focused, maybe you better play Age of Empires II: DE or IV.

AoE 3 is an absolutely unappreciated game. If you hear and read about the game these days, it is usually referred to as the "worst part of the Age series" and the "black sheep", even though the game received very good reviews when it was released. I wonder, why is that? Is it because it is really bad? Or rather because it is overshadowed by AoE 2? Either way, AoE 3 is an absolutely fun game. Time wise, it takes place directly after AoE 2 in the early 16th century and goes on until about the end of the 19th century. Where knights and swordsmen used to dominate the battlefields, muskets and artillery are now to be seen. As someone who grew up with AoE 2 and first tried the game 10 years ago, I downright hated AoE 3 because it was too different for me. As I've looked more into the game with the DE now, I've realised how good the game is when you don't look at it through the partially nostalgia-soaked AoE 2 glasses. The game has many ideas that can now be found in AoE 4 (e.g. the Ottoman vizier system, which is very similar to the home city system) and are celebrated by players there. Speaking of the home city: as an AoE 2 player you have to think of it like freely choosable civ bonuses. You put together a deck with up to 25 cards for the first four Ages that grant you various bonuses, e.g. settlers, units or resources. The maps themselves are a little more lively and interactive due to the collectable treasures. These are RNG-based and offer various bonuses, such as resources, units or permanently additional HP for buildings. There are also native settlements on the maps that provide units and technologies, as well as trade routes that grant experience or one of the three resources. Something I still can't stand, though, is the snaring mechanic. This temporarily slows down units that were hit from behind, which makes the controls a bit inaccurate for me. As an AoE 2 main, I can recommend AoE 3, as well as the rest of the series, to everyone. If you were turned off by the game back then, give it another chance with DE.

I remember playing Age of Empires III on my dad's desktop when I was a little girl, so playing this is a huge nostalgia trip for me. It's still just as awesome as I remember, if not more! 10/10
