This game is actually quite fun, with a fairly descent campaign. A lot of the other reviews mention some of the issues with the combat and weapon interactions. A lot of that has been fixed with the most recent update to the game, though there is definitely still some jank. I do actually find the combat to be pretty satisfying, and have really enjoyed the gameplay and campaign. Unfortunately, the update also seems to have broken the game (by removing certain key items in the game), which itself is not really that big of a deal as the devs should be able to fix the issue. The reason for the Do not Recommend is the devs have been unresponsive to these requests (both submitted to steam discussion board as well as in emails). I have noticed several other users with similar or other issues from the recent update that have also been unanswered. As a result of these issues I am unable to progress in the game and can't recommend it. If the issues are addressed, I will re-evaluate my review (at the time of this review, it has already been over a week since I submitted my original issue - but I certainly understand life happens and something might have come up for the devs)

Oof. I would like to enjoy this game. It's obvious some love went into certain aspects of it, but all in all it just doesn't feel quite ready. Graphically it looks great. Textures and lighting is solid, enemy animations look animated and varied. But everything quickly falls apart with the gameplay; which becomes obvious when you actually start fighting the enemies. The weapons themselves feel somewhat floaty, often colliding with enemies far softer than you anticipated. If you're used to VR combat in games like blade and sorcery you won't come away very impressed here. Swinging a sword or axe at exposed enemy limbs or torso's often doesn't quite seem to have the effect you'd be expecting; bouncing off with a gentle flapping noise half the time. Enemies can be (somewhat unreliably) sliced and diced to pieces, and they do wear destructible armor, but if you want any kind of satisfaction you're best off stabbing or crushing their heads for a quick and reliable kill. Perhaps my most pressing gripe is the lack of audio. It almost starts out promising; with very solid voice acting for the main character, the crackling of thunder and a torrential downpour of rain as you enter the eerie town under the cover of darkness. In those first few minutes I was really digging the ambiance. But then the rain quickly clears and it suddenly becomes... boringly quiet. Torches and even blazing bonfires don't emit even a single crackle. There's no ambient sound, no wind blowing, ravens cawing, wood creaking, ruins crumbling, distant groaning or anything of the sort. Not even any ominous music to cover it all up. Just complete silence except from your footsteps as you shuffle around the map. Then the enemies appear and they're generally dead quiet as well, often surprising you from behind on account of being so extremely silent. They're undead; at the least they could do some general moaning, grunting, clanking of armor or bones or whatever to make you intimidated and aware of their presence; but this mainly seems to happen during scripted moments or during their attack animations. Whatever sounds DO exist (mainly blocking and hitting enemies) often seem muffled at best; making combat feel rather dull rather than visceral or engaging. You could hit someone with a pillow in real life and likely produce more noise than whatever soft flaps or clangs are emitted during the combat in this game. It really detracts from the entire experience and makes the game feel somewhat unfinished or even early access. In conclusion; it's certainly not all bad. Performance is extremely smooth on my machine (RTX 3060 Ti), and there's some fun to be had in scavenging through interiors, collecting weapons, lighting candles, climbing vines, interacting with the physics or even solving simple puzzles. But the meat of the game is combat, and that's where I just find it very lacking currently. I genuinely hope they overhaul the audio entirely (except for the voice actor, he's great!), adjust the volume levels, and fine-tune the combat itself to feel more satisfying in the weeks and months after release. I genuinely hope I'll soon be able to turn this into a glowing recommendation. But as it stands, the core gameplay loop (especially the combat) just doesn't hit quite right with me yet.

I was hesitant at the reviews because I know how elitist some B&S-fans are, but as a casual VR player playing this - it just doesn't feel very good honestly. The game has no ambience/music while playing except for some scripted moments. The combat is really boring and it feels like you're hitting a bag of sand using a heavy plastic sword, that sometimes pretends to die, and sometimes some limb is cut of without you even trying to. Sorry guys this game just isn't fun.

First I wanna say Undead Citadel really isn't as bad as some critics describe. Sure it's sword swing isn't 'as responsive' as some games with excellent fighting mechanism (B&S and Battle talent to name a couple). However, it isn't any worse than boneworks or Bonelab either. I don't feel it's anyway game breaking. If swinging is what the game is not so great at, other departments stand out though. In Undead citadel you CAN: - solve simple puzzles -Explore maps, search each house for mission item or magic potions -hold candle or torch with one hand to light dark areas, while the other hand still holding your sword -quite impressive ragdoll physcis. I think one of my arrow nailed, yes, nailed an enemy onto a wall once - enough enemy types to keep you interested, for examples I've encountered heavy armoured big guys who had me like 'oh man what do i do , what do i do .....' - great variety of weapons so far - and notably doing different things if you try. and many more to discover. yeah, the game still needs some polish , I agree. But all in all this is one of the higher quality VR games that offers an RPG / Dungeon crawler / sword fights altogether experience. 8/10 from me.

While this game does have a few notable issues, the overall criticism in the reviews section is pretty unwarranted and really shows that PCVR players expectations are way too high, particularly for an indie title. The style and setting are great, and the game looks and performs really well, at least on a 3090TI linked to a Quest 2. The voice actor did a great job selling the character and the story is well executed, despite being pretty simple. Interacting with the environment and using it to your advantage in fights is also really fun. To be balanced I will outline what my issues with the game are: Combat feels fun and chaotic, but don't go into this game expecting the level of realism and finesse you'd get from something like Blade & Sorcery. Weapon impacts are often very soft and unsatisfying, and you will quickly discover that despite half the enemies being skeletons, stabbing weapons are vastly overpowered compared to clubs and axes, and usually one-shot standard enemies(on Normal difficulty at least). Meanwhile, parrying usually cancels the enemy attack animation too early, before the weapons even collide, and feels less rewarding for being too easy. Finally, enemies will sometimes damage you despite being currently ragdolled and not even holding a weapon, but simply because you got too close. This isn't a huge problem because that damage is small and food is plentiful, but it feels sloppy and unfair in the moment. My other main issue with the game is how repetitive and pointless the exploration feels. You will pass by dozens of functionally identical houses with nothing but food and one or two enemies to fight inside them, but you won't want to ignore them because then you'll miss the 1 in 10 that is hiding a new weapon or a treasure chest. This really slows down the pace of the game and feels out of place in what is otherwise an enjoyable action-packed arcade-style hack and slash experience. Despite all of that, I recommend this game if you're looking for a challenging and fun single player VR experience, and I think games like this should be encouraged and enjoyed on their terms rather than compared to AAA projects. Well worth the price tag. To the devs: Great job on the game, this release certainly deserves more attention! I hope you'll continue to work on it, it would be great to see the level exploration filled out a bit more(just finding some more frequent potions etc. would feel worth it) and PLEASE add the option to toggle crouching rather than holding the button.

Well worth the wait, a little laggy at times but I think that might be because I'm using an oculus quest 2. This game is awesome. The combat is satisfying and clean and the visuals are really well done. Good job devs the wait was worth it!

I like this game! Played using Quest 2 via AirLink. It has 10 levels, they are different in weapons, surrounding, enemies, vibe and objectives, which is cool. First half is more like a tutorial about stuff you can use, enemy types, weapons, potions. But the second part was really intriguing to me and had some challenges. And oh boy, shield was my only true friend! I really underestimated it. The only con to me is a saving system, which forces you to finish the level in one run. And this was additional quest I had to solve while using Quest 2 (haha). It was not a big deal after all, second try is always faster. Be aware, that useful items are located everywhere (jars, beds, wood planks) and sometimes it's worth to explore a little bit more. Some of the weapons are unique and hidden well, so good luck!

Here is he thing: I don’t want to downvote a one man Indy developer who is hard at work with his game. BUT: It just isn’t fun. It looks good in the videos but bland in headset. Awful foggish green lighting and with repetitive interiors everywhere after 5 minutes. But most importantly the combat is so utterly lame even when compared to Ancient Dungeon (you know, that minecraft cube look…?) let alone Battle Talent. I returned it, sorry. Its not worth the asking price, imho.

The first couple of levels in the campaign are really good however it drops off after the first half. Levels in the beginning explore the streets and abandoned buildings, the night and all the dark interiors are very tense, the lighting torches mechanics is used for fun rather than necessity and all the arena fights and one encounter fights transition to each other quite well. After the midway point you enter the underground of the map and I feel that it goes downhill quite a bit. There are a lot of "puzzles" like buttons on the floor that need things to weigh them down, completely took me out of the experience since you have to trek for a few barrels to do so. Not to say that there weren't such obstacles in the first set of levels, you do need too carry a torch at one point to burn some rags in your way and blow up some walls that wouldn't be erected in a normal city but it was more in the way after the fifth level. I was going to wait until I finished the campaign to review but the second to last level annoyed me because you have to backtrack to light some basins with fire arrows to proceed and I do not like the archery so I don't think I'll put myself through that. Combat is pretty good, visceral, easy to slice and crush limbs, found it very satisfying. Parrying not so much, sparks fly and look nice but there's a lot of telegraphing making it seem a bit on the easy side. There's a large selection of weapons (60, 80 equipable items in total I think) which would be great, however, there are damage numbers so there is a progression path you are pushed into taking. On one hand, whatever, it's an obvious way to see that you're progressing but not particularly immersive. There's a durability system which should balance things out so you're not always carrying the highest damaging item but all the weapons past the second level have a really high durability health bar so you're not going really be thinking about it too much. There are 3 bows, only difference is weight so I would think that translates into arrow distance, not quite sure because I didn't use the bow unless necessary. Enemies are a bit wonky, the noise they make when they run seems either too infrequent or too low, I could never tell when one was behind me so I was constantly spinning to make sure nothing was there. Their AI is ok, they take turns to strike, they do notice you when you're in plain site and within a reasonable distance, not quite homing tracking, unless you're in a building which makes sense, you've just opened a heavy wooden door and have made quite a bit of noise on the way in. Archers don't take a shot unless you're in sight and are quite real in terms of accuracy, they're accurate about 60% of the time so no bullshit deaths via them. Tank enemies are easy to exploit, stagger them once and wail on them with a one handed weapon and they can't recover, only an issue if there are more than one. Loved the lighting system, I spent a good couple of sessions lighting up every intractable light source after a combat encounter for no particular reason other than because I could. Voice acting is pretty surprisingly great, a strong portrayal of a knight with some bad tendencies with a Good alignment, in my mind it was someone akin to Arthur from Ghosts 'n Goblins. Graphics looked really good, not on the level of Alyx but it is up there. Overall, I'd recommend playing the first half at least, with that in mind the price tag is too high for that. For me to recommend at full price, I would need the devs to rip out the crap puzzles and if you need to replace them, do it with a lever or something to open doors, get rid of the exploding barrels or have them explode rubble instead of walls that would've never been constructed (Like the wall infront of the gate doors) and don't make me backtrack through the second to last level, if you're not going to have it be immersive at least have an archery puzzle right there that I can do. Also make potions a bit more abundant, I loved the freezing and slow mo but not a lot of potions to actually use. I liked most of what I played but am not particularly interested in the horde mode to keep me. Will absolutely buy the next game the devs release.

I really want to like this game, and with some polish it might end up being good. The atmosphere is amazing, graphic are a little cartoony but that's normal in VR and with my GPU limitations (2070S playing at Medium) Combat doesn't feel right, feels like being a kid again doing slow mo "martial arts" in a pool. Seems like they tried to add weight by slowing down combat but it just doesn't quite hit right. The impacts when hitting enemies is pretty bad. keep trying to figure out if i hit or missed, until they suddenly split in half. Haven't played alot of games in this genre so I have little to compare it too, but I played the GrimLord Demo and that game had more satisfying hits and blocks. ps. In Death needs to sell their archery code to other games, every other game I play with archery feels hollow compared to In Death
