Play in VR or on PC

Rolling Line has been built from the beginning to be both a PC game (first person style) and a VR game.

You can play with a keyboard a mouse just like any PC game or train sim, but if you have a VR headset (Oculus, Vive, Valve Index and WMR) connected then it will automatically launch in VR.

If you have the Valve Index controllers then you can even make use of full finger movement tracking!

VR controls can also be fully re-binded using the SteamVR Input System.

Just like a model railway

Layouts in Rolling Line are designed to look, feel and operate like a real hobbyists model railroad, with switch boards to control the tracks, portable hand-held controllers to drive trains, and complete control over the rooms lighting.

Freely push wagons around on the rails with your hands to build trains and take control of them using DCC-style hand-held controllers!

Build your own tracks and scenery

Place pieces of track and scenery to build your own huge (or tiny) railways!

Choose from a huge range of props like trees, buildings, vehicles, shapes, etc.

Paint different colors onto props and terrain using a simple color painting system.

Choose from a variety of colors or edit your own hues and palettes.

Place down chunks of terrain to build hills and path ways, or use external 3D modelling tools to create your own complex 3D terrain (via modding).

You can build your custom layouts entirely by hand in VR, or play on PC to make use of PC-only map making shortcuts.

You can share your layouts on the Steam workshop and easily download other peoples layouts.

All layouts you make can be easily backed up and shared in plain text, which means you can copy-paste an entire save game between friends!

Explore in human scale or miniature

Switch between human-sized room scale and railway-sized miniature scale at any time, any where. You are not limited to only driving trains in miniature, but can fully explore and entire layout at the scale of a person.

Drive trains from right inside the cab in miniature, and view the world from the driver's perspective!

Choices of locomotion

Choose between a range of locomotion options, including standard teleporting, grabbing the world around you to move yourself around and free directional movement with the trackpad.

Other options like manual rotation (if you cannot use room scale) and setting your player height help support a range of VR setups.

Rolling line offers an immersive experience of both controlling a model railroad and driving trains from within the world itself. Whether you enjoy exploring model railways, the joy of controlling model trains, the experience of a scenic railway journey or the freedom of building your own tracks and creations, then Rolling Line can deliver!

Rolling Line is an awesome game that is just perfect for when you want to sit back and watch trains roll by. Just make sure they don't crash ;) Here are some pros and cons for anyone who wants them: Pros) - VR and PC support - Lots of Trains - Lots of Scenery and Props - LOTS of Workshop Liveries, Mods, and Layouts - A Developer that is dedicated to making the game better Cons) - Due to the game having only one Dev, major updates aren't often - Takes a while to get used to the building controls - Can get laggy on bigger layouts - Overall - This game is 100% worth the price. It's fun, engaging, and it has a Developer who cares about the players' ideas. I'd 100% suggest getting this game if you love Trains, or if you have a VR headset.

Instead of actually reviewing this game, I’m going to do something different. I’m going to go on a constructive rant about the hobby the game is centered around: model railroading. (Btw if you don’t have the space or money for an actual model railroading get this game) Model railroading in the US at least is a dying hobby. Sadly, I’m one of the few younger people in this hobby. This hobby is very popular amongst boomers, but the struggle is getting the newer generations interested in it. The younger generation tends to not care about model railroading for a variety of reasons. One being the overall high costs and other reasons being that the hobby has the image of being a Boomer's hobby and the general view of railroads as a technology of the past. The cost issue is quite a large one. Many low quality Bachman sets cost upwards of $100 and many fair quality locomotives cost $80 and up. Model railroading has become my favorite hobby and its sad to see the state it’s in. New people to the hobby who might otherwise hold interest in the hobby cannot attain reasonably priced starter sets. My point being is that i suggest more people try to get into this hobby. It’s nice to see a scaled model of a machine made to haul this country's freight or passengers across an fairly accurate recreation of actual rails. My advice for new people to this hobby is: avoid Bachmann when you can, look across sites like eBay for used locomotives and rail cars that might just need a small bit of maintenance, and buy additions gradually. Thanks for listening to my Ted talk and good luck on your first layout if this applies to you!

Reviewing this as a yes but with the caveat that it isn't really playable without VR.

I used to not like this as there was no way to make roads. However, it is now possible. The game gets updated even to this day, and is a lovely game straight out of New Zealand.

The best train game to play in my opinion. The steam workshop support is awesome and there are regular updates from the dev. Great game overall.

Having been an active member in this community since almost day 1, it pains me to have to give this a negative review but I can't in good conscious give this any kind of positive rating. The main problem I see with this game is how confusing and difficult it is for new players, the tutorials that exist are very poor at explaining even half the basics, I got confused from them even though I've been playing this for years and already know how to play. The community is another MASSIVE reason this is a negative review, the discord is to be AVOIDED at all costs, it's a cesspool of racist and homophobic teenagers that look for any and every excuse to bully any new member of the community. God forbid you're anyone younger than 18, the server believes it's ok to post NSFW stuff as long as it's deemed "art" so it's totally common place to see members randomly posting pictures of statues with dicks because "it doesn't count as NSFW". This game seems to be child friendly but the community is far from it. Parents thinking of buying this for their kids will need to make sure they avoid any part of this community or their child is likely to be bullied right out of it. Another aspect of the game i completely disagree with, there is no security in place at all for any models on the workshop, the models people have put into this game have been stolen and uploaded to other games, as well as stolen and reuploaded to rolling line's own workshop. Model creators are just told to suck it up if their stuff is stolen as there's basically no TOS or anything covering model creators, you uploading your stuff here means you're revoking any rights you had as a content creator, and risking losing anything you make. The game has alot of issues, and most of them being the community that gauge has allowed to fester and turn sour. In short I can't give this a positive review, there's just nothing really positive about this game anymore.

as a train fan myself i really enjoy this game as its a sandbox and also a train sim, if you don't have a strong computer this game wont run as well as other computers but you will still be able to play the game, if you ever played other train sandbox games then you will most likely enjoy this game, so if you like trains and sandbox building games then this is the perfect game for you.
