Barotrauma except its underground, the best simplified explanation about the entire game

So, this game looked extremely interesting and the game inspirations mentioned made it a very easy thing to justify picking up. Now I know EA games don't come with all their content ready for consumption, but I have significant grievances on what I was sold for the release, such as it is of EA. First off, let me state that yes, i'm aware this is EA, and the game can change dramatically. That's fine and all. Problem is, the trailers show case a TON of stuff that simply doesn't exist in the game, and is very misleading into what sort of game it is outright. On to the meat the of the review, i'll comment on a few things. First a brief summary, basic TL;DR via Pro and Con. Pros of the game - Good atmosphere. Uses the graphics it has and the sound to very good effect. The monsters look good, and the trailer enemies look fantastic, shame they don't exist in the game. - Good potential. This much I don't doubt, and i hope to swap this to a recommend in the future. Cons - Insane pricetag for what was offered, even for an Early Access title. I've played a lot of games from their release from Early Access, but this is a first where i get so little for such an ask. - Bad platforming, which is 90% of the game. Wish this was an understatement, my playtime is 9 hours of me dying to a very , very bad platforming game, which is clearly not designed to be a platforming game. - Artificial difficulty. Spawning enemies where you can't draw your weapon and deal with them is a constant and very annoying thing to deal with. you can't reload on the wire - better spawn a large wave of flying enemies while you're on a ladder and can't fight back or run away. Ect. It's a personal pet peeve that constantly was being triggered. - Lifeless world. I am aware we're in an underwater facility, but there are no NPCs doing mundane tasks with us fixing up the place. This can be fixed down the road but I mean, it's been very uninspired. Diving into abandoned tunnels filled with critters leads to a constant fight reflex and allows no horror to build up. That's about all I can think of for a quick Pro and Con of the game, in it's current state of 2022/01/25. The trailer really made me thought I was buying into a more squad based survival management horror game. There is the straight up thing 'ambush the medic' thing, which i thought for sure was going to present in the game. But any body I found was just a corpse, and after saw how 'squad' stuff is handled, I can very much so say I am not keen on how the game is handling 'other characters'. You've pushed yourself into a weird direction, with a lot of the game fighting it's own mechanics at every turn. It's theme isn't good for constant fighting, which this has turned out to be. The lives based system made investment on the character null quickly. And no, I won't play realism when the game will outright kill me for moving a slight bit faster than the non-kill threshold. I am not that much of masochist, and don't want to waste my time that much just to experience a true attachment to my 'characters'. Again, lives in a horror survival game just seems to be combating the elements you have. Having a number of squad members with specific roles is how I figured every map would be, using their kits to transverse and being put in tough, but not unwinnable spots if they died due to the nature of what the game was 'seeming' to want to be. But worse is the platforming you've put in. The game is so fickle with what is acceptable drops and what isn't that it extended my playtime far more than I would ever have needed for any other game, and it's not because of anything other than that the mechanic is heavily un-tuned. To the extent I am amazed you found it in a state that was worth selling, like considering how much of the content is reliant on it i'd figured you'd want people to have a GOOD experience with what you just released, but hey your call. I have as of this review, asked for a refund, but I am eager to see if this game changes for the better, at least in my opinion and maybe sometime down the year i'll be able to kick this reviews ass and put in one that praises the game instead. Until then, good luck with your game dev man, and to my fellow gamers, definitely keep an eye on the game, but maybe hold off on buying if this sounds like you might be making a mistake such as i did.

In 1982 John Carpenter's The Thing set the stage in pop culture as a keynote for suspense and cosmic horror involving a cell-restructuring parasite. Decades later, the evolution of cosmic and body horror involving alien organisms and grotesque human malformation have spawned games such as Dead Space and Aliens. Hidden Deep is an attempt at replicating some form of the suspense and horror that iconic alien media has achieved. In concept, it sounds like it. The game mainly focuses on exploring caverns and mining shafts with a soldier character that has a gun and exploration tools such as grappling hooks and scanner drones, then switching to engineer characters that can operate various machinery to solve puzzles to clear the way forward. If the thought of dark caverns filled with unknown hostile alien life and a high mortality rate sound great to you, hold on. The concept is solid, and there are genuinely good moments that speak well to the horror nature of the game. Rappelling down a dark cave while controlling your descent so as to avoid an untimely death by swinging too hard against a wall, you hear horrific creature noises down in the depths somewhere. Your flashlight extends out and catches a glimpse of some bloody mess of organs that comes towards you. You draw your pistol out and fire into the darkness, each shot having a loud, impactful boom whilst lighting the darkness up, rounds clinking off the ground. The gameplay does show its potential at times. Between the action focused exploration and combat, engineer based gameplay can be interesting. Remote controlling lifts to ferry equipment across chasms while controlling the speed so as to not accidentally smash or swing the load off the lift, building bridges and pushing boxes with loaders are some of the vehicle interactions available. As a single player game, you assume control of up to five different crewmen, one at a time. While definitely serviceable, there are times when the game feels rather clunky due to enemies attacking an uncontrolled character, which requires you to cycle through to that character and arm your weapon to deal with the threat. Ultimately though, these mechanics while working, are let down by the lack of user experience polish throughout the game. Trying to attach on ladders is a clunky experience of running back and forth trying to find a pixel perfect point where you can jump to grab a ladder. Your character has a jump and a way to catch ledges, but knee-height ledges are unable to be passed as there are no interactions set up for them. Getting soft locked in a terrain along the main path unable to proceed is quite a common occurrence, so much so that the game offers a stuck recovery option that consumes a life to respawn your character. Environments, while immersive - are lacking, since most of the game revolves around a very limited set of assets that are the same identical rooms and shafts scattered around the one cave environment. Perhaps more variety would have helped, since by hour three you would have felt like there was no sense of exploration or motivation to continue past getting to the end point of whatever you have ended up in, in large part due to a lack of substantial story delivery or interesting environment changes. There is barely any dialog or story points. You get told to get to the next area at the start of each map, and that is it. The enemies themselves are interesting, although nothing you won't find elsewhere. The main enemies are flying bat like creatures that can deposit a slug that attacks you. Sometimes there is a noticeable hole in the roof and a bloodworm comes out that can insta-kill you. There are other varieties, but all in all the enemies do not feel much like a danger, rather an annoyance. This is mainly because there is a predefined method of dealing with them, mostly aiming your gun into unexplored areas, then firing a shot to draw them and then just shoot. There is no suspense or fear associated because lives are so disposable and enemies are so predictable, missing the mark of pop culture icons such as The Thing where you never knew who or how to fight your way out. Again, this was a stated inspiration for this game. Coop is available, but very limited. There is a side challenge mode where coop is optional with a controller plugged in (Splitscreen or remote play) for 2 players and it is the exact same map on the exact same mode. Overall, do I reccomend it? Not at this stage. There is a solid foundation for a good game here, but unfortunately in its current state it is lacking enough substance to be worth its asking price. The atmosphere? Great. The sounds? Great. Potential? Amazing. Delivery and execution? Lacking.

Ok so, this one is a bit complicated for me. I love the premise, and I understand this game comes from either a small team or a one man dev which in that own right it is really impressive. However even considering that, it is just not to my personal taste. I came in this game expecting a different experience than the one it offers. The game itself seems to be a combination of several things. The thing, the descent, and half life. A wonderful proposition in itself. Though for me, it is too much half life. The trailers made it seem like a plunge into a horrifying and hopeless situation. One where I would encounter terrifying monstrosities and battle for my life. The actual game is in my own personal opinion, far from it. I've encountered the fodder enemies so commonly I feel nothing when I see them other than annoyance. While I can appreciate the idea of the delving aspect, I feel like it's too much of the focus with no horror to back it up at all; all the while taking place in bland areas. The gameplay loop of having others and crew death counters when you die is interesting in concept, but only furthers to take away from the tension. I realize i'm not that far into the game, but at this rate the normal enemies and loop don't compel me to continue. I understand this may be my own taste, but I think it's something to say that this game is more tedious task than scary, if scary at all. I wish the dev luck and I may revisit it at some point, but as of right now it is not for me.

I refunded this game not because it was bad, actually looks pretty good and fun, but because of the actual co-op experience. When I saw this game on sale under the co-op section, me and my partner saw videos of both a marine and an engineer working together to complete a mission in some cave. We were excited about playing a co-op campaign together so we purchased it. Turns out that the main campaign is single player, and the only co-op mode available is a challenge mode that lasts tops 10 minutes. We both spawned together in a random location of the cave as marines, with no context or any guidance telling us what are we supposed to do. All we had was a radar indicating a distance from something. The radar eventually leads you to a box. If you collect it, you win and the game closes. Me and my partner were very disappointed learning that was all we could do together. If the co-op experience is not planned to be implemented or is just not finished yet, I see no point of advertising this game as a couch co-op.

this game was advertised and was made out to seem like a Co-op game, but after a long time searching, i found out that the co-op is only playable through Challenge modes and these modes are not fun and pointless. story mode is single player only. so if you are trying to buy the game for Co-op, don't buy it. this game is not that good right now, there are only 3 types of monsters: the flying ones, the spiders and the tentacle coming from ceiling which is the only jumpscare this game has, plus one huge version of Spider enemy types that is supposed to be a boss (which is easily avoidable at some parts). needs more enemy types. personally i loved the gadgets, the soundtracks and the engineer machines but all of these get boring REAL fast because this game promises horror elements but is mostly puzzle stuff which is not bad, but is far from what is promised. Combat is kinda janky, plus, zip-line crashes the game frequently and is buggy AF. also this game has a Difficulty setting that as far as i noticed, only affects the number of lives you have which i can't consider DIFFICULTY SETTINGS. maybe it tweaks other stuff as well but i really didn't notice anything. Co-op story mode will make this game 10 times better that what it is right now. i would recommend you to wait for the full release because the roadmap looks promising but until then just save your money.

Generally this game would be a big "YES" in reccommendation from me, but there's something I have to clarify; if you pick this game up, do yourself a favour, go to custom setings for an Expedition and set the enemy count down to 40% or 20%. The biggest issue with this game so far is that it isn't the kind of slow-burner that you'd expect it to be. Sound and atmosphere are fantastic, the oppressive feeling of the caves is suitably lonely and its a joy to use your tools to crawl deeper and deeper into the abyss. BUT... the game just throws enemy after enemy after enemy at you, completely wasting the mysterious vibe it could be building up. Added to that, its combat just isn't exciting enough to really support this amount of carnage. When I started I expected the sort of pacing as one would see from the original Resident Evil, where encounters are sparce and more often than not, you're better off avoiding enemies or sneaking past them than actually engaging them. But in terms of enemies this game is closer to the pacing you see in games like Dead Space or Resident Evil 4. Whereas those games had the benefit of featuring very enjoyable and varied combat, which was well able to support the number of fights you'd encounter, this game's enemies and arsenal just isn't varied enough to be worth your time. After a few hours of slogging through caves the combat just becomes mind-numbing. You see a couple of flyers or spiders come your way, you gun them down and that's it. There aren't any decisions to make, no unique arsenal to use or weakspots to exploit. Even the tentacles, one of the more unique enemies in the game, are just used as environmental traps, which quickly become a non-issue after the first time you're grabbed by one. If the devs want to turn this into the sort of action survival-horror game like the aformentioned DS or RE4, then I think they need to add more enemy variations, more weapons, more unique encounters and need to tone down the amount of flyers and spiders the player fights. Though for me personally, I think the game should move away from its combat-heavy gameplay and focus more on its strenghts, add more exploration tools, more ways to exploit the environment and really double down on that feeling of uncovering some long-forgotten horror. My hope is that they take a page out of Lovecrafts examples in how to present the evil that is present down below, instead of having you gun down its minions every five minutes So yeah, over all, very enjoyable experience, I would reccommend it, though do maybe look out for a sale to buy it on. I got it when it was 50% off, which definitely made the decision to get it much easier. And like I mentioned, in the state that it is in RIGHT NOW, don't expect a slow-burning atmospheric horror game.

Excellent setting and gameplay so far, but not without its flaws. The AI is, well, basically non-existent. I really feel like you should be able to tell your crew to follow you, or command them to do basic tasks like operate a vehicle or be on lookout for enemies. You can give them basic movement commands but it is very clunky and more often than not will just result in them or you dying. Horror aspect also needs to be amped up a bit, as aside from like the first time encountering the tentacles, nothing ever really struck as particularly scary. It's a spooky setting and the ambiance is pretty good, but the actual monster encounters become mostly trivial once you get the hang of the controls. It is definitely more puzzle focused at the moment, which as others have said, isn't bad but isn't really what I got from the advertisement. Of course I expected puzzles, most horror games have them, but I was just also expecting a bit more risk, and a bit more spook. Hopefully this will shape up just as nicely as Daedalic's other published game, Barotrauma. Put in even half the effort that went into that, and it'll be a pretty great game.

Short Version: Solid atmospheric 2D shooter with some neat mechanics and good gameplay loop. It's a little buggy, but it seems like it's being actively worked on. However, the trailers are a bit misleading... Long Version: The story mode "Expedition" is a series of (currently) linear levels that mainly involve traversing around the area, killing grotesque monsters, and sometimes a puzzle or two with the engineers. It took me 8.6 hours to do all the levels on medium difficulty, and despite dying more than a few times, I never lost all my lives and failed the level, so there's challenge to be had. The "Exploration and mapping of unknown caves" vibe the trailers give off isn't quite genuine since there is a very set way to continue in every level. HOWEVER, the Challenge Modes fit a bit more closely. Randomized seeds with different objective types, co-op, sprawling levels, etc. I got more enjoyment from the Expedition mode, but if you wanna go all "The Descent" style and go spelunking, the option is there and it's good. The main draw for me was the atmosphere. It's tense, the music is unnerving, and the look and sounds of the creatures you fight are pretty damn gross. Despite taking place in a caverns and underground facilities, the levels felt varied enough that nothing was a direct copy and paste, and I was pretty much on edge the whole ride. The puzzle mechanics involving engineers and machinery are introduced early, and they stay largely the same. The first 9 or 10 levels have some amount of voice acting in them for the Mission Control, but for some reason they just kinda... stop? Maybe they couldn't get the VA back in or something. The combat is good for a 2D shooter! Movement is a little clunky and more often than not it comes down to good positioning and managing your aim, so there won't be any crazy dodging or timing enemy attacks here. The characters aim doesn't go EXACTLY where the cursor is, it moves up and down and is represented by a laser on the weapon, Depending on the weapon, the range of the laser is longer/shorter, so making long distance shots with the Pistol will be harder than the Rifle. This makes the shooting much more engaging than just point and click since you need to compensate for the character, and I think it's a solid change to 2D shooter mechanics to make things more tense. However, the introduction of new enemies into the mix is pretty slow, so for the first 5 or 6 levels you'll be fighting the same flying enemy and slow moving worm. Occasionally there's the insta-kill ceiling tentacle from the trailer, but those are more of a trap than an enemy. About halfway through they add some Brain Spiders, Spider Eggs, and a Momma Spider as a kind of mini-boss (granted you only fight it twice) but once those are in, they only add one more around level 10. In the same vein, you will use the same two weapons all the way until the most recently added level, #13. However I have managed to find all the new weapons in the Challenge Mode. The thing that got me killed me the most, hands down, was gravity. Despite traversal of the caverns being very important and core to the gameplay, it's more methodical than reactionary. This is absolutely *not* a platformer, any time I tried to play it like one (jumping from ledge to ledge, running and grabbing edges, etc), I died horrifically. You are required to jump short gaps, and the game tries a few times to act like it has fast-paced platforming mechanics, but currently it's far too clunky for those mechanics to feel right, and sometimes they don't work at all. The movement has some strange quirks and bugs too, holding space will wiggle your character around, jumping and grabbing a ledge 7 feet up is fine but hopping up a 2 foot ledge is nearly impossible etc. The grappling hook however, is a ton of fun to use. Whenever you have the choice to swing across a gap or try to jump? Use the hook. It'll save you lots of lives and frustration. If you got this far and you're kind of on the fence, let me tell you about the last level: It fucking rocks. Out of nowhere they give you 4 new weapons and introduce about 3 more enemies. That level alone took me nearly an hour to complete just because of how much there was. Swapping weapons, fighting the new critters, it was sick. I really hope they try to retroactively sprinkle in these weapons and enemies to the earlier levels to provide a bit more variety in the earlier game. TL;DR It's a solid game that shows a lot of promise but is a little rough around the edges. If $25 seems a bit steep for the current state, it's at least something to keep an eye on. I know once it gets another update, I'll be coming back for more.
