  I didn't like Boneworks at first. It's not exactly like the other VR games I've played. In fact it was only after 6 hours of play time that I finally decided to check what other people were saying about it. And this was the video that I watched. That's when something finally clicked in my head and I realized what Boneworks is all about. It's not about the protagonist, but you, the player! Boneworks is designed for you to be able to express yourself and do the most wicked stuff in it. Everything from parkouring your way around the level, to taking down multiple enemies at the same time in slow motion, to shooting yourself in the foot and dying. I did all of those things, and a lot more. Boneworks isn't the type of game you take seriously or try to "play it by the rules". This is a simulation, and you are Neo, there are no rules. In fact even the tutorial part of the game mentions that you can complete a level any way you want, even by cheating your way to the end. The story and characters don't matter here, it's not that kind of game. Instead Boneworks offers the best interactive sandbox VR experience. Not all the levels are equally fun to play, but they're all unique. And they serve to introduce the player to new gameplay mechanics, and challenge their creativity. As mentioned before, there are no rules in Boneworks. Any object can be used as a weapon or a shield. Even your dead enemies' lifeless corpses can be picked up and swung or thrown or used as barriers against incoming bullets. You can scale practically any building, and later on you'll be able to stick to walls and even fly. There's tons of secrets and loot everywhere, so exploration is highly recommended and rewarding. Gunplay, and especially the slow-motion shootouts are immensely satisfying. Here's me Max Payne-ing some poor bastard. Tons of guns, attachments and weapon combinations. You can dual wield, you can grab enemies and throw them around, you can barricade doors or crack their skulls with a watermelon. The game itself isn't very hard, so you're never in any real danger. Which in turn allows you to be as creative and as entertaining as you want to be. But that's not to say that it's a game that I would recommend to VR newbies. If you just got a VR headset and you're considering buying Boneworks because it's on sale - buy it. But play something else first, like Beat Saber or Until You Fall or Super Hot. And then come back to this when you're ready. Because Boneworks can be a little bit overwhelming to a new player. It's not a 'party game' that you let your friends take turns playing. It takes some getting used to, and some elements like navigation and parkour will take a longer time to master, at least in my experience. Visually, Boneworks looks good! It's a game that chose clarity over fluff, and it's still a very pleasant experience. In no small part thanks to it's amazing physics simulation and sound design. And did I mention that Boneworks has a killer soundtrack ? I did not expect that at all, especially from a first person VR shooter game. Sometimes I would dread the thought of leaving a level because the music was so good. Things that I didn't really like ? I guess I wish the save system worked differently. I was hoping that once I finished the game, I would be able to go back to any level with all my resources and gear unlocked. Because I worked really hard to collect everything and get all the guns. But instead if you load an earlier level, you don't 'travel' there, you just load a save game from 20 hours ago. Where you don't have anything again. It was just a bit disappointing, it's no big deal. And maybe most players actually like this idea. In conclusion, I think that Boneworks is a must-have title for any VR enthusiast. It's got advanced VR mechanics, satisfying gameplay, great soundtrack and universal physical interactivity, as well as a bunch of additional free content. The only thing that would make this game better would be some kind of coop or multiplayer mode. Stress Level Zero did a phenomenal job creating one of my favorite VR games, and I can't wait to see what they come up with next! Thanks for reading my review!
