I played this game on a laptop on a combat outpost in afghanistan. I loved it at the time. Maybe because I didnt have anything else to do in my free time but play cards. If you are patient it can be very enjoyable. I give it a 7/10. Notice all of the bad reviews come from players with less than 2 hours of playtime. You cannot learn how to play this game in less than 2-3 hours imo. It probably takes longer than that. Give it a chance.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River is kind of like a mixture of ArmA, MOH and Ghost Recon. You command your fireteam (like GR) except in a more complicated way similar to ArmA (stance, dispersion, noise dicipline etc.) There are ArmA features like bullet drop, the importance of stance when aiming, military jargon that is relevant to the task and some adherence to military tactics. The AI (unlike ArmA) are actually somewhat lifelike, and they behave much like the AI in say MOH BF3/4 and GR. Unfortunately, the environment isn't breakable (like BF3/4), however you can reduce buildings to rubble with high explosives but that is it. Suppressors aren't that useful because of the way the campaign is played (open ground and daylight) but fortunately they do not reduce damage like in some games. The weapons are rather innacurate, almost to the point that they are unusable. The M4A1 carbine is good for distances up to max 20m away (the ACOG magnifies too much). The M249E2 SAW is about the same. The MP5A4 is good for targets up to 10m away. The M14 is best with the Leupold Mk 4 because the ACOG sits too far forward on the weapon and the peripherals interfere. The M107 is useful for any range, but if targets are within 100m, then aim using the graduations above the middle of the crosshair. In conclusion, I would recommend it to anyone. It's fun by yourself (the AI are competent) and fun with friends or even strangers (the online community are quite pleasant).

This is a weird game. The previous game in the series (Dragon Rising) was an attempt to make a more mainstream, casual milsim and it bombed, so Codemasters decided to go even more mainstream. Any semblance of milsim has been thrown out the window, in favor of CoD-style design: linear paths of combat leading to scripted setpieces, bookended by cinematic cutscenes. Seemingly in an attempt to make Red River stand out (and at least pay lip service to its milsim heritage), the game incorporates a few elements of more realistic tactical shooters into this mainstream formula - squad control, slower pace of combat, and large maps. These are all nice, even though you never have any real tactical decisions to make in combat, shooting is unfortunately clunky, and the AI cheating makes things artificially difficult (just like in Dragon Rising, they react obnoxiously fast and with laser accuracy to make things "hard"). Worse, Red River fails to deliver on the scripted cinematic feel that it's clearly going for. Most cutscenes in the game are long humvee rides to the next objective, listening to your NCO give tedious tutorial lectures and increasingly jingoistic speeches, while the pre-mission scenes are flashy briefing sequences without much substance. The setpieces that should steal the show instead feel low-budget and unconvincingly dramatic - even when you're supposed to be losing, the enemy is never made to feel like a convincing threat. This winds up creating a jarring disconnect, as the gameplay just can't portray the things the game wants you to feel. As an example, there was a late game mission where my squad and some allies and a platoon of LAVs were defending a little city from an enemy attack that was *supposed* to be massive but was really just a handful of infantry (without any support, naturally, because the PLA is mysteriously weak in this game). So there I am, in a fortified position with a superior force just picking off enemy troops as they charge uncoordinated across open ground, waiting for the objective to clear, and the NCO starts yelling a supposed-to-be-inspirational speech that was clearly there to fire me up during my "intense" battle. He started going on about how this was our Battle of Hue City and our struggle would be remembered in the annals of the Marine Corps and all kinds of crazy stuff. And there I was, having stomped through this little city with my vastly superior force, which was now lined up in a firing line and just mowing down the few bad guys who tried to attack us. And I actually burst out laughing. None of it added up. The coolest thing the game manages is that you're always part of a larger force - you control a single squad (Bravo, IIRC), and two other AI squads (Alpha and Charlie) are always there on your missions, with their own roles. So it's not a "PLAYER 1, we need you to do this!" all the time for every thing - sometimes you have to provide support while an AI squad does a thing, or you only have to defend your sector because your allies have got theirs. It's a nice touch. The worst thing the game manages (aside from the Windows Live DRM) is that singleplayer loadouts are now tied to player profile level to encourage multiplayer (gag), which is one of the most infuriating things a developer can do. Even if you're okay with this, now that mp servers have inevitably been shut down, you'll have to grind singleplayer to level up your player profile if you want to unlock better weapons for use in the friggin campaign. It's a bad system. To touch on the story some, it makes no sense whatsoever. I tried to explain why here and it just turned into a rant. The story is bad in the first half and abysmal in the second half. None of the major actors have any good motivation for what they're doing - which is fighting a major war.
SCROLL DOWN FOR PROS AND CONS IF TLDR
For me, this game is still very high up on its story line. You will actualy feel like your in tajikistan as you wade through country side on foot or in humve. The tatic plays are decent with being able to place orders to your 3 AI team mates who, for the most part are actualy good other than a few slip ups here and there. Orders such as protect person, or if you need to defend an area, can order them to take a building and defend it by using windows to shoot out of and such. It angers me when people say that they cant stand the guy talking in the ride all the time because for me personally that just adds to the realism (now i have never joined the army) but i assume this is close to what it felt like during those times. Also people say that they cant stand the long humve drives, and again this for me plays a big part in actualy feeling like i'm traveling to my destination insted of 'skipping to the location'. If you have patience, you will love this. TL:DR This game will provide hours of enjoyment <<< Pros: Storyline Tactics Very Good AI for its time Realistic Negatives: Can feel clunky at times Appeals to certain people You need patience!

Ah, Games for Windows Live. We meet again. For those who don't know, GFWL is a third-party DRM platform, notorious for it's poor design and the way in which it makes you jump through hoops to simply play the game you paid for. It takes so much hassle to get the game running on a Windows 10 PC. I had to delete files, mess around with compatibility settings and more before I could get the thing working. Do not buy unless you really feel like messing around to get it working. This really shouldn't be available on Steam in my opinion.

I purchased this game on sale at $2.50. Interesting little tactical shooter, focused on Co-op play. People who are fans of the previous game or older games like "Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30," will likely enjoy this game. Pros: -Authentic USMC conduct and squad commands, and there is a good amount of customization for your soldiers loadout. -The campaign is at least 10 hours of varied types of combat across Tajikistan. -The co-op mode "Fire Team Engagements" are intense and each represent specific types of objectives found in the Campaign, such as escorting a convoy or rescuing helicopter pilots trapped behind enemy lines. -Hardcore mode strips HUD assists like mini-map, making engagements with enemies much more dangerous Cons: -The graphics were a little dated even for 2011, -There isn't much content available out of the box for the Fire Team Engagements (made worse that you cannot buy the Valley of Death DLC since Games for Windows Live Marketplace is down) -Everyone dislikes GFWL -Some poor placement of checkpoints if playing on Normal or Experienced Difficulty -Some missions could use more freedom, such as being able to flank from another side or steal enemy vehicles.

This is one of those many games out there cursed by Microsoft Games for Windows f****** Live. If you're on windows 10 then you'll find out that GFWL will totaly f*** up your plans of actually playing the game, but there is a fix if you're up for googling or try here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/44340/discussions/0/412448158148856781/ and if it still doesn't work (as was in my case) try uninstalling GFWL then download it from the microsft website and reinstall it. Once you're actaully playing the game, it can be fun and quite realistic compared to other shooters. I really enjoyed it.

Literal dogshit. Operation Flashpoint: Red River is the final installment in the Operation Flashpoint series. I go way back with this series. The original Operation Flashpoint was my favorite game in High School. Cold War Crisis (Now called ArmA X: Cold War Assault) was a brilliant milsim. It was a difficult and wonderfully rewarding experience. Now, this is where things take a turn for the strange. Codemasters and Operation Flashpoint's developer, Bohemia Interactive Studios, had a falling out. Codemasters owns the Operation Flashpoint license, so they name stayed with Codemasters. BIS went on to make Armed Assault: Combat Operations, or ArmA. The original ArmA (as in ArmA 1, not ArmA CWA) was lukewarm in reception. It had loads of issues upon launch. This left people wondering perhaps that Codemasters could make a better game. So, they tried with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. Now, simultaenously, BIS was going to try again with ArmA 2. BIS made a lot of good decisions and even released a demo of ArmA 2. ArmA 2 came out a few months before Dragon Rising. There were still complaints about performance issues, but over all ArmA 2 was a huge hit. Dragon Rising received no demo before release. Infact, it got a demo a month after. Dragon Rising did feature a better performing engine than ArmA 2, but that was about it. The game even had a mission editor on PC, but it was inferior to ArmA's. In all, I actually enjoyed Dragon Rising a lot, but it's inferior to ArmA 2 in so many ways. The majority of issues that plagued it could be centered around the fact that it was a pretty weak console port to PC. Now, Red River is more of the same bad, but none of the good. I wish I could go into more detail, but Red River boils down to this: -Get briefed by a gruff Staff Sergeant -Scripted shooting gallery section with weak feeling weapons and the most retarded set of mouse sensitivity in an FPS. You need to have it maxed in order for your view in the iron-sights to have any usable movement. How retarded were you, Codemasters? -Deal with dumbed down AI. Literally. Prick-in-Command Sion Lenton outright said the AI in Dragon Rising was "too good" at some points. The fuck planet are you from? Now, enjoy being able to run through a door filled by a Tajik insurgent, get behind him, and shoot him in the back as he menaces you. -Get back in vehicles for additional banter. One hallmark of Flashpoint, vehicle control, is gone. In a quote from asshole supreme Sion Lenton, he stated that "Marines don't fly" despite the USMC operating the 5th largest Air Arm in the world. Instead, you're treated to a Call of Duty level single player and co-op experience. Literally, it's pretty much Call of Duty single player. This game is one you should pass on without a doubt. If you want tacticool shooting, pick up any of the ArmAs, the original Ghost Recon, and Ravenshield. If you have those and still want more, Dragon Rising isn't awful This is. Skip.

Dont get me wrong i actually like playing the game, but the main problem i have with this game is the games with windows crap. I paid to have this game then i had to link it to my account on xbox which was a pain, but the worst is i deleted the game, and finally had a reason to come back and play it with friends so after downloading it and starting it up, i get blocked by games with windows crap saying its already been used on another account when its the same account that i put it on to begin with. So now i cant play this game with my friends. I recommend this game only if you want to play by yourself, the crap of games with windows just kills the game for me.
