This game helped me avoid becoming the kind of person that I was on the track to becoming. I think that can be considered both pathetic and inspiring in a way.

This is the first time that a game has made me this physically sick and depressed. I'm going to need a couple months to get over this.

*****Buddy's got a list and she's working her way up to the top.***** You gotta love how people attempt to review a thing before having played it at all or having beat said thing... ... Well I have beaten it, and here's the deal: First of all, the Joyful is simply REQUIRED playing for fans of the series. Passing this up just wouldn't make any sense in any universe if you liked the Painful even a little bit. It ties off all of the loose ends and answers all of the questions we had after having finished the first game -- and that is just fantastic news! Without even going further into it I can fully and do highly recommend this DLC simply becuase it is the EXHALE to the INHALE that was the first part of this story. Now, with that said, it should be noted that this DLC is *technically nowhere near as good as the Painful was and here are some of the reasons why: - Combat is bland and does NOT evolve. At all. I'm serious. Get used to spamming the same attack and using a maximum of 2 (mostly one) character(s). - Three of the five primary new features (Flashing, Assassinations, Active Combat, Masks, Sprinting) while awesome in concept, simply don't add up to much at all: /1. Flashing enemies is interesting and is a cute concept from a story perspective, but there are a large number of enemies - also for story reasons - that are not affected at all by this action and I found it rather useless most of the time. //2. The assassination moves that Buddy can perform by attaining the higher ground over her enemies. These moments are downright cool and make you feel like a badass. So what's the problem? I was only able to do this twice during my entire playthrough. Yes, twice. ///3. Buddy has several timed moves during encounters that require a button press to be performed properly. These moves are practically interchangable and have nearly an identical cadence to them that does nothing to set them apart from each other. - Complete lack of healing items and Mags which, at least to me, made the game extremely frustrating and difficult at times. It came to a point where I honestly could not progress without using Joy to heal myself. Up until that point I had actually managed to avoid using Joy for 90% of the game's running time, but I literally would have had a broken save with 4 hours invested had I not caved so that I could finish the game. - No random creatures to Level-Up on or to harvest Mags from. - Every area follows virtually the exact same pattern of Enemy, Enemy, Boss. And unfortunately only a handful of these encounters end in an interesting conversation. And some of the time there is even nothing said at all, which is just a shame because Dingaling has such a talent for hilarious and quirky dialogues. Now, with that bit out of the way we can finally talk about the stuff I prefer -- why this DLC is still essential and why it ends up being saved entirely, even despite itself: - Dingaling's world. It's still here. In all of its glory. And we finally get to see where it ends up. Everything is explored further. Everything ends. In some ways I did and did not see coming. - Those moments of hilarity, tension, disgust, sadness, relief and joy -- all return intact in that same deft and elegant way that they did in the Painful. - The Pixel Art is out of this world good. Surreal, creepy, and at times hilarious. - The Music. That insane and fantastic Music. There's more of it here, only it's less hectic and more melancholy in spirit. But that's completely in keeping with and totally in service to the darkness that is everywhere in this DLC. - STORY! What can I say? This is the BEST, most REAL, most IMPORTANT aspect that this series of games has ever had to offer and Dingaling tells it with every moment, every battle, every song, every scene, every sound and every character. No one makes games like this save for Dingaling. It's the only place you can get this brand of unique. - SPRINTING, FREAKIN', ROCKS! - Putting on a mask - or not - actually had an effect on something. It caught me by surprise and ended up being pretty funny. So there is my piece. I started playing, an enormous fan of LISA the Painful, with an enormous smile to match that sentiment. Then I lost that smile for a while and got disheartened by a few needless mechanics and a sudden wall of rising difficulty due to the disappearance of items altogether. But it all worked out and the smile eventually returned in full and I ended up a fan of LISA the Joyful too. And I really don't mean to be hard on this. I certainly did not WANT to be hard on it. I just can't help but feel that the pure, totalitarian EPICNESS of the last game just somehow ended up majorly dwarfing this one in all technical aspects. But please, make no mistake, this is every bit as good as the last chapter in every way that ACTUALLY matters or could count. Dingaling is an outstanding developer whom has accomplished greatness with this, his series of games. When viewed as a whole the LISA series speaks major volumes towards his clear and undeniable talent for making video-games. I cannot wait to see what is next and I will forever be a lifelong fan of these games. LISA is something special. Whether it's flavored First, Painful, or Joyful. Please support it. : )

I stand on the fence here. I truly, truly enjoyed Lisa: The Painful RPG, and a conclusion is something I would've bought even if I had to wade through a million negative reviews and a truckload of harsh criticism to get it. I enjoyed this. I enjoy feeling like things have been concluded. But... The combat is lackluster and the characters are underdeveloped. There's not enough buildup towards the twists that take place, (excluding one which is heavily foreshadowed in Lisa: The Painful RPG) and it seems to be missing, I dunno, a certain sense of itself that Lisa: The Painful RPG had. Given that the main character Buddy's skills revolve around a timing minigame, the combat gets a little more dull. This is especially because the only way of manipulating fights Buddy has is using her sword to make people bleed. Admittedly, this makes the game more tightly balanced and none of the enemies are going to feel like pushovers throughout the course of the game. However, it would've been nice to have more variety and to feel like you had the ability to fight the way you wanted to considering Lisa: The Painful RPG gives you so much room to work with that. Even the main character alone, Brad, has a considerable list of skills. To speak of the story, it reminds me a bit of some of the older Japanese era RPGs, where a sliver of foreshadowing means that there must be a huge reveal later. I'm not going to say that certain things are unexpected so much as they are -sudden- though. The motives of the characters in this game almost feel contrived and forced, compared to Lisa: The Painful RPG, as well. There's just not enough time in this game to do what it wants to accomplish and it left me, at least, feeling a little empty, and not in a profound emotional way either. Still. If you're reading this review, chances are, you've played Lisa: The Painful RPG, and maybe even Lisa: The First. If you enjoyed Lisa: The Painful RPG, I'd urge to get this game, because you're going to enjoy it anyways. If you -liked- Lisa: The Painful RPG, but it didn't grip you, don't bother with this sequel. It's going to be more of the same, and with sloppier execution. I'd like to thank the DEV for making this either way. I don't feel like I wasted my time with either of these games, and Lisa: The Painful RPG was quite inspiring. Lisa: The Joyful gave me a lot to think about concerning story, character, and game design as well. So again: If you're a fan, you might as well get it. If not, I'd be more discerning.
LISA the Joyful: You're good, kid. But what's it all worth?
TL;DR - check out Uppers/Downers/Bottom Line at the end. Here we are at the end of LISA, a series of three very different games with one name between them. And I just don't know anymore. It was the easiest thing in the world for me to write an ecstatically positive review of LISA: the Painful RPG. Painful struck me as a beautifully judged game of maturity, wit and emotional depth, the sort of game you want to tell everyone you meet about (but restrain yourself to telling the three men and a dog that read your Steam reviews, for fear of seeming creepy and kind of sexually threatening). Joyful, though? Joyful is not an easy review to write. Joyful is a curate's egg that would be hard to assess on a percentage scale, let alone thumbs up/thumbs down. I've played it three times (once with the 'more moves' patch), got all the achievements, had a big think with a wet towel wrapped round my head and now I'm going to try to write a fair and balanced review. Help me, Lisa... ~ Joyful is, naturally, deeply dependent on and interlinked with its 'parent' game, Painful, so we have to look back at what made Painful tick to make any kind of assessment. I'll do it point by point. Painful managed to perform a mesmerising balancing act between the bitterest bleakness and wry, sharp humour, with never an awkward stumble to break the spell. Joyful, after a familiar blast of intro music, opens by falling face-first off the tightrope into a pile of bathos. The dialogue, which in Painful almost always rang true, is in this first scene wooden and unconvincing; the characterisation here feels jarringly forced. After that dubious start I was wary of a trainwreck. That never quite arrived, thankfully. But Painful 's consistently deft touch is absent. There are six major characters in Joyful, and four of them suffer at times with dialogue and motivations that feel like they really needed a couple more drafts. The whole thing screams 'needed more time', and although the basics of a great martial arts movie plot in LISA's ill world are in place, they're slapped together in a way that feels rushed and undercooked. A strong musical score was one of Painful's other plus points, and Joyful's soundtrack is just as good. At its best it's so expressive that the music conveys heaps of the emotion, impetus and even plot left unsupplied by the weak script, sending out ideas of loneliness and desperation, of wistful, hopeless nostalgia and woozy, spiralling madness. There's a real love of music in this game, with recurring motifs and changing timbres used to great effect. Painful put a lot of effort into the illusion of a deep world, with secrets to explore, people to meet and decisions to make as you go to your fate. Joyful, with its 'party' of one or two, lacks the mechanical depth that permadeaths and party building provided. However, although its East Olathe feels disappointingly cramped, there are quite a few interesting secrets that are worth hunting down, and the central hub neatly mirrors a disintegrating world. The one major 'in-gameplay' decision is almost a Hobson's choice, but that fits with the grim, doomy tone of the game. Since Joyful's actual gameplay is a lot less fun than its predecessor's, with Buddy's narrow range of timing-based attacks adding tension but not much else (and honestly this feels like a deliberate, thematic decision), it must live or die on its story, intelligence and mood. Whether it is worthwhile or not depends on whether it continues and completes LISA's story successfully; whether it provides interesting characters, cool moments, clever insights and emotional impact. Does it do that enough? The truth is I'm not sure. It's hit and miss. There are a couple of inventive, cool bosses, in amongst the instantly forgettable. There's one dreamy sequence of lovely warmth and poignancy that uses RPG mechanics as cleverly as anything in Painful, along with the rushed scripts and tin-eared dialogue. There are a couple of secrets (one very well-hidden) that give satisfying, sharply-written insights into the story, along with the less well-hidden mediocre slop and dodgy characterisation. There are flashes of diamond in the mud. But, sad to say...it's not enough. In the end, I asked myself, does LISA work better as a whole with Joyful, or without it? And I decided that for all those flashes of diamond, the mud drags the whole enterprise down a little. ~ Uppers: An exciting trip further down the LISA rabbit hole for the desperately curious. Some bright flashes of good design, storytelling and emotional intelligence. The best two or three moments almost - almost - make this worth it on their own. Awesomely expressive music. Shows a world crumpling to its knees with creepy economy. Bravely bleak. Downers: Falls squarely and often into the indie-game trap of saying 'DARKNESS' a lot instead of showing darkness, the same one Painful avoided so beautifully. Somewhat lacking in humour, black or otherwise. Disappointingly lame dialogue for too much of the game. Characterisation really ham-fisted at times, to the point of retroactively taking some shine off Painful. General sense that your imagination filled in the gaps after The First & Painful better than this does. Feels rushed in almost every sense. Could have been so much more with some editing and time. The Bottom Line: LISA the Joyful is a deeply flawed addition to one of the best games in years. If you loved LISA: the Painful RPG, you'll be really tempted to check this out no matter what reviews say. And it's a mixed bag for sure, with great bits jumbled up in mediocrity. You'll enjoy the ominous feeling of a world falling apart, and the few well-judged insights. Of course you want more of a great thing. But be careful. Some good things are best left as they are.
