i review games on steam after i 100% complete them! check out my reviews to see all the games i have completed! downwell is a vertically scrolling platformer that was developed by ojiro fumoto and published by devolver digital. it released in october 2015 on iOS and PC, then later released on android devices in early 2016, with PS4/vita ports coming in may of that same year. lastly, a nintendo switch port came out in early 2019. development started around march 2014, after fumoto, the sole developer, essentially dropped out of college and began working on game projects. downwell was apparently his thirteenth project, but was still the first time he'd been proud of the game and saw potential in making a full release. he took heavy inspiration from spelunky, a game fumoto was apparently "obsessed with." he wanted to make a game like spelunky but he wanted to make it simplistic enough that it could seamlessly run on mobile devices in addition to regular gaming spaces. later in september 2014, devolver digital even publicly tweeted at fumoto about downwell and eventually they became the publisher, which definitely helped the marketing and eventual sales of the game for sure. the success of the game even got the dev hired at nintendo for a brief time, which also led to the nintendo switch port. downwell uses a black and white color palette, with red and blue sparsely used to highlight things like environmental features or enemies, although this can be changed later through in-game unlock-ables. you play as a "curious man" who uses gun-boots as his main weapon. you'll find treasure, kill enemies, and generally explore as you fall down the well. the well itself is procedurally generated, with enemies and other things also randomly spawning in at random points. there's even some light rogue-like elements at play here which add to the variety of the game overall. the controls are tight, simple, and satisfying all at once, making this a very fun and extremely interesting platformer that feels great to play, and leaves you wanting more by the end of your initial playthrough. a common saying i've used before is if the biggest complaint i have about a game is that it's too short, you know it's a damn good game. this is also another classic example of how devolver doesn't miss and how they have a great eye for smaller devs and the great quality of games that can be put out with such small teams/budgets. it's extremely well crafted and the fact you can grab this on sale for less than a dollar is insane (i bought this for 74 cents). i highly recommend grabbing this on sale, immediately installing and trying to finish the game in one setting. it's definitely doable, but 100% completion will require at least two playthroughs if you're in to that kind of thing.

Incredibly responsive controls, tons of gameplay variety, and a super fun core concept that evolves and expands as you progress downwell :) A must buy for action game fans, and incredible value for money.

    https://youtu.be/i5C1Uj7jJCg
Downwell is a vertical action platformer with roguelike elements.
The game's premise is simple: you are a young person traveling down a mysterious well full of monsters and treasure. Your only weapon is a pair of ultra-cool Gunboots that help you by both slowing your fall and shooting up monsters. It's insane, and I love it. This is the first commercial release by Ojiro Fumoto, a Japanese indie game developer. It's obvious that his game design has been influenced a lot by Vlambeer. It's got all the right ingredients: simple gameplay that's easy to learn but tough to master, the addictive qualities of an arcade game, and lots of screenshake. If you like to compare games, the best way to describe this is like a mix of Nuclear Throne and Super Crate Box. Downwell isn't an easy game. It's fast paced with a good variety of hazards and enemies to fight. Some can be killed through headstomps Mario-style, while others can only be dispatched with your Gunboots. There are 4 different levels with 3 stages apiece (as well as an endboss), and each of them have different themes that challenge the player. However, you can't save your progress at any point with checkpoints or files: you need to perform perfectly if you want to beat the game. It's not impossible; beating a stage will let you choose from character upgrades Nuclear Throne-style, and you can find different gun modules that change up your weapon. Like Super Crate Box, weapon pickups are a risk/reward affair. They all handle differently from each other, and you may prefer some to others so much you might skip some. The catch is that they will always give you an upgrade of either refilling your HP or increasing your max ammo capacity. Combined with a selection of 5 different playstyles to choose from, this game ensures that each run you have will be fresh and fun. Playthroughs usually last anywhere from 5 - 20 minutes, which keeps you coming back for more. It's perfect for players who like to invest their game time in short bursts while requiring quick reflexes and providing unique experiences. The production values for this game are excellent. Eirik Suhrke, the composer of Spelunky's soundtrack, put together some amazing chiptune tracks. Uroburos, the first level's song, features some great Gameboy-like bass and a great catchy beat to smash monsters to. The music perfectly sets the stage for a strange but epic journey into the depths. It sounds foreboding, but it's never dreary enough to turn you away. Coupled with the great sound design by Joonas Turner of Nuclear Throne, this game feels extremely satisfying to play. His gunshots and explosions are full of punch, and every sound you hear else fits right in with the game's aesthetic. I almost wish he had made more sound effects for all of the monsters, like cries of pain as you stomp and shoot them into oblivion. The bitcrushed shrieks and laughs are sure to give you chills. The visuals are cute and minimalistic, sticking to a 3-tone color palette that still conveys all the right information to the player. Enemies are highlighted with a blend of 2 colors, while tougher ones stick out with 1 bold tone. Though they aren't highly detailed, the animations bring so much life to all of the characters. Everything about this game feels great, and it's nice to know that they put such love and care into the design of a simple game. Not everyone would like this game, though. It's really difficult, and it can discourage new players from the beginning, especially since there's no saving. The high skill ceiling might keep you on the first few floors for a while, so practice is crucial to moving on to the later parts. Some may find the pixel graphics unimpressive and hard to read because of the lack of coloring. There's other small problems with user interface, like a lack of personal control binding and no option to reduce or remove the screenshake. Some of the finer mechanics like wall-jumping, combos, and increasing max HP are left ambiguous to the player as well. You might complain that it feelsl ike just another mobile port from the lack of support, but fortunately, the developer has promised to change up the interface in future patches. Still, even if you're on the fence about playing this game, I'd recommend to everybody to get it. It might be the best game I've played all year, and it's only $3 and available on mobile. Plus, it also tends to go on sale quite frequently, so it's definitely worth a dollar or two to grab! It has tremendous replay value and the amount of work put into it is very admirable. It's been applauded by many other indie devs (who have probably made some of your favorite games as well), including Derek Yu of Spelunky and J.W. Nijman of Vlambeer. It was made by one guy who lovingly paid attention to every detail and knows exactly how to design a fun game. It's a work of art that has simple but distinct mechanisms and a lot of moving parts, and once you understand how it works and how to best play it, it flows like music. I love it, and I hope you do too. It's definitely one of my favorite games of 2015. TL; DR: For fans of Super House of Dead Ninjas, Probability 0, Spelunky, Nuclear Throne, Super Crate Box, and good games in general. :)

It's like Nuclear Throne falling down a Metroid tunnel with Bayonetta gunshoes. For 3 dollars you can't go wrong.

Downwell is a fantastic game for an exceptional price. I would pay 10+ dollars for this game, letalone the low price of 3.30 (CAD). Heck, I've even paid 60 dollars for games less enjoyable than this. It's a tough platformer/shmup with a brilliant graphics and a damn fine soundtrack. While at first the game might only seem OK, the game truly shines when you get a hang of it's combo system- previously "sorta tough" levels turn into heart racing ballets of bouncing off all kinds of crazy enemies and crossing your fingers that you don't get the laser. Seriously, screw the laser. It might seem overpowered at first, but that's exactly why I hate it. Anyways, i've only gotten to the second area of Downwell- but that's mainly because the game is extremely tough. But that's part of the fun, seeing how perfect you can get each area before getting so good at them you can tackle the next one. I'm not sure what the rest of the game is like, but unless the game shouts racial slurs at the screen in the last area I'm pretty sure i'll like it just as much as the beginning of the game. 10/10 best virtual boy game i've ever played EDIT: I take back everything I said about the laser, with gem recharge it's the best weapon in the game and netted me a 29 combo
