About the Game

The two jello jelly creatures Bismo and Plom got connected in a tragic yet funny accident and thus can exchange their size and abilities at will. Welcome to the world of Shift Happens - the only game out there which doesn't take a closer look at the body mass index and where players are actually forced to work togehter (and occasionally stab each other in the back).

Experience thrilling adventures in four totally different worlds:

  • Explore a freaked out laboratory where Bismo and Plom had their accident!

  • Uncover the secrets of the overgrown green forests...

  • ... and survive the dry canyons where a deadly wind awaits you...

  • ... just to prepare you for the bitingly cold caves!

The twist: Shift Happens is pure fun for solo players, yet its full potential can only be experienced together. Play it with your best friend while hanging around on a couch enjoying a pizza. Together you can solve puzzles and fight over precious coins. Coordination and communication are key to a successful journey. We recommend using gamepads for maximum enjoyability™.

The game also features a singleplayer mode with different level content. Although the game is primarily meant to be played by two people, you can play the completely different singleplayer levels without another person.

The game features all the good things you should expect from a co-op platformer:

  • Over 40 levels of handcrafted fun

  • Local and online co-op gameplay

  • Extra challenges/rewards in the levels for completionists and explorers

  • More than 30 different levels designed for the singleplayer mode

  • 8 unlockable bonuslevels (4 single- & 4 multiplayer)

  • Achievements

  • And timechallenges for each level

[th]Factor[/th] [th]Rating[/th] [th]Description[/th]

Gameplay Loop 7 This game is basically no-nonesense fun platforming. It knows what it wants to be and sticks to that. Getting past levels is pretty easy, but every level has these orbs, a secret area, and one bonus thingy to collect - which makes for a fun enough experience. There's 4 worlds, and we found the 2nd one to be the most fun in terms of the quality of each and every level. Some of the later levels can start repeating the same ideas every now and then, but the game easily managed to stay fun for us through the 10h runtime. I do think I'd have rated it even higher with an even more crisp runtime. Just remember one thing, do not skip on the bonus levels. They're the best content and the most memorable bits of the game for us.

Narrative 6 The story is that there isn't much story, which I can appreciate over a ham-fisted, forced narrative. The idea is that you're both AIs or something trying to escape the simulation, and it's only suggested non-verbally. The game sticks to its guns and focuses on giving you new platforming levels. It can lead to a lack of secondary gameplay loop though, or for the lack of an easier term - a sense of overarching progression outside of getting 3 stars in individual levels.

Visuals 6 The visuals are pretty good. The give the game its distinct look, important objects stand out in the environment for the most part, except for a couple cases where the background seemed to be something in-game but wasn't. But hey, you can choose your hat and do emotes so the cutesy-game checklist approves.

Mechanics 7 TBH, the mechanics were pretty solid - a lot more than I usually expect from indie coop based games like this. Some of the platforming challenges were engaging, and some of them lead to creative applications of the game physics. The online can be laggy occasionally though, but it wasn't common enough to be a problem. There is definitely a certain amount of "auto clipping" sort of mechanics, which leads to some sudden actions or missing out player input entirely, but despite some roughness around the edges - the mechanics were really solid and fun to play around with.

Challenge 8 The game isn't particularly difficult, even at it's hardest. But it still finds a good sweet spot to balance the challenge it's willing to throw at the player, and respecting the effort we'd be willing to give the game, provided it's mechanics and level design. It certainly has some really engaging moments, particularly in the bonus levels.

Variety 6 I was expecting to give it even more in variety, because up till the bonus level of chapter 2, which is around the peak of our playthrough, the game kept introducing new ideas and new ways to use them. After that, we still do get new ideas at a respectable pace, but it never quite reaches the same level. Call it overstaying it's welcome, call it the natural quality decline in a game's second half. But it certainly felt like some ideas got repeated to get to the desired quantity of levels. They even became less visually interesting compared to the previous ones. But despite that, the game does have some of it's best content in the very end, and the bonus levels remained great in every chapter, and left us wanting more.

Mapping 7 The level design was really good in some places and pretty basic in others. The secret areas were easy enough to find for anyone with a keen eye. You could consider that a positive or a negative. Some of the timed challenges and bonus collectibles certainly made us stop and think about the solution, where the puzzle aspect of the game came into play. But for the most part, the levels are designed to pose a good enough challenge while letting the players continue the flow of the game, and it achieves that well.

Sound 6 The soundtrack is pretty good and goes with the look and aesthetics of the game. While I don't remember anything special as such, it certainly achieves what it's going for - both in terms of the sound design and music.

Interface 7 There were issues we had in the menu two or three times, but apart from those hiccups - the interface does what it needs to pretty well. I did find it odd though that the hearts given in any particular level just went to 0 from 1 or whatever, but it never started all the way from the 1 again if you died - but stayed at 0 for subsequent deaths.

Pricing & Performance 8 I'd give it a 5 on Pricing. We picked it up on a sale and it's more than worth what we paid for it. Would certainly recommend that in terms of that. A 3 on Performance, because while were there were no major problems, there was a minor hiccup or bug almost every playthrough.

Replay Value 6 I don't see myself playing this for a while, at least until I forget the levels completely. But the game is certainly high enough in quality to warrant some replay value. We might go back for dem bonus levels, who knows?

Online (Not part of final score) 7 No major connectivity issues, but some minor problems every now and then.

SCORE : 6.7/10 Full list of Rated Games. Don't spam shift when you're throwing your partner against the wall that falls over. (Unless you like unsynced physics that swing you right off the map and broke the game :D)

Actually a fun puzzle game but there's two mechanics I didn't like at all and 1 made me quit the game half way through: 1. There's timed challenges. I hate timed challenges but fortunately they're optional. 2. You can die in this game and then have to restart the level. Meaning you might even have to play for a few minutes to get to the place where you died. This might be an interesting challenge for some action driven games, but in my opinion adds nothing valuable to a puzzle game. I'm here for puzzle games and quite suck at platformers. So this made me quit the game after 4 hours.

Game is not fun nor innovative if you've played other good puzzle games before. Even with the 90% discount price, you get a game that breaks quite frequently, having left me and my friend forced to restart a level multiple times, and the gameplay will get tedious very fast.

This review is from a pure multiplayer perspective, I never touched the single player version of this game and that is ok cause this game is much better enjoyed with a friend. The game-play is simple yet exactly what it needs to be. The levels are well designed and good communication is key in order to complete each stage (especially for the "timed" badge for each level). The only complaint I have is with the bridges that you need to throw your companion into to lower, the physics frequently break and often smash me or my companion; often causing us to restart, although this may be just a remote play bug. Despite this problem this game was still very fun and I would give it a 8/10
