The new level pack for “Adventures of Shuggy”, “Shuggy’s Teleporting Troubles” is now available on Steam. This new set of 40 single player levels provides a fresh challenge by throwing double teleporters into the mix as well as combining the teleporter with other mechanics from the main game such as level rotation, zombie Shuggy, floaty jump, rope swinging and multi-Shuggy. The level pack is included as part of the main game so it’s free for everyone who already owns it.

About the Game

Shuggy has just inherited a castle full of goblins, ghouls, zombies, and robots. Help him clear out over 100 rooms to make his new home liveable again! Every room in the castle is different, letting Shuggy fly, float, swing, spin, change size, time travel and more as he explores the Dungeon, Boiler Room, Clocktower, Gallery, and Graveyard.

Key Features

  • Co-op play - Play 36 twisted two-player levels in the offline co-op mode, with puzzles that can only be completed through cunning and teamwork.

  • Non-linear map screen - Multiple routes through the castle ensure you'll be able to find another route if you get stuck.

  • Boss encounters - Use your wit and cunning to defeat the dastardly bosses in each area of the castle.

  • Time travel - Get caught in a time loop and co-operate with your past echoes.

  • Rotation - Spin whole levels or interlocking puzzle sections to grab all the gems.

  • Seeing double - Utilize multiple Shuggys under the influence of different gravities.

  • Teleportation - Use Shuggy's teleporter to solve some tricky conundrums.

  • Tied up in knots - Grab the magic rope and swing your way to victory.

This is a fun and cute little platforming game with great music and lovely backgrounds, and it has some challenging levels and interesting puzzles, the ones where you spin the room around the character are my favorite ones. The co op levels are a lot of fun as well, I played it with my friend on the same keyboard and had a lot of laughs. I recommend this game to anyone that wants to relax with a light hearted game.

The era of 2D mascot platformers have been on a slow burn since Mario effectively took a stranglehold on the whole genre with Super Mario 64 where you could fall horribly to your death in three (3!) shiny dimensions. In the current era of indies platforming is rather buried under the avalanche of roguelikes, farming simulators and deck builders so to sate my need for something pretty braindead I booted up this relic from 2012, and yea, it is alright. This is a quirky yet quite easy puzzle platformer on the comfort food level of chewiness. The characters are cute and the levels varied enough even though the general difficulty is all over the place, just like Shuggy in some of the maps.. In the end I would recommend you to pick it up on sale, it won’t blow your mind or rearrange the universe as we know it but it is pleasant enough and should be an excellent coop-experience with younger less demanding earth larvaes.

2012 was a very different time for puzzle platformers on Steam, considering there weren’t literally thousands of them elbowing in on each other. It was easier to stand out, expectations weren’t as high… and there were fewer folks around to notice, too. Games like the Adventures of Shuggy could easily be lost amidst the deluge of modern platformers, and that would be a shame considering how varied and creative it gets with its puzzling. You can certainly find more polished platformers now, but it’s not so easy to find ones with this much heart. Adorable bat-critter Shuggy has inherited an entire castle from his late uncle, but it’s a bit of a fixer-upper. The walls are seething with steam, the halls are overrun with ghosts and ghouls, and everything is locked up tight. The only way he’s going to clean the place out is by visiting all 100 rooms and gathering up the gems hidden away in each chamber. It’s not as simple as just tidying up, though, because like any good haunted castle this one has spikes, lava, rotating rooms, levitating platforms, and all manner of insidious traps. Only a keen puzzling mind can make it past these obstacles, and that’s where you come in. After a charming motion comic setting up the premise, you are deposited into the dungeon of Shuggy’s new castle. There you’ll find 25 doors to puzzling chambers, as well as locked passages to other parts of the castle where the rest of the rooms lie. Only a few rooms are open from the start, but clearing one tends to unlock the ones adjacent to them. There’s a boss at the end of each area you’ll need to tackle, usually by using some of the platforming skills you learned along the way, but the main challenge is the vast array of puzzles to solve on your route to the big bad. What makes the Adventures of Shuggy so great is the wide variety of puzzles you’ll be working towards. Right from the start you’ll be getting interesting gimmicks alongside more conventional challenges, and even an hour or two in the game will be introducing new mechanics. Some are familiar, like switch-operated force fields, rotating rooms and sections, gravity-flipped rooms, and so on. But others are far more creative, like the rooms where time repeats and you use your temporal doubles to open paths for you. Or the magic rope, which can be affixed to machines and swung from like the ninja ropes in Worms. The game is very careful to ease you into these gimmicks with simple rooms, and then escalate them to brain-busting challenges by the final areas. I’m not going to call this the most creative or robust puzzle platformer around, but it features a fantastic spread of challenges that guarantee those 100 rooms will never get tedious. The layouts vary radically as well, with tight one-screen rooms, wide, scrolling rooms, outdoor rooms, and more. They’re done up in bright 2D sprite work that’s entertaining if a bit busy, and Shuggy and his foes are similarly garish and charming. There’s a lot of love put into the animation, but overall it does end up feeling a bit unpolished in the movement and collision, more like a Flash or early GameMaker title than the top-shelf platformers we have today. Just go in expecting adorably indie and you should be fine. A lot of platformers in the endless offerings of Steam don’t really stick with me, but Shuggy has for years. From the cutesy characters to the clever chambers, it’s an indie darling that does exactly what it needs to satisfy. It doesn’t stand out so well, owing to its feel and simple presentation, but once you find it I’d be surprised if you didn’t fall in love with it. The Adventures of Shuggy is packed full of great puzzle mechanics and loads of ways to experiment with them, all wrapped in a terribly charming aesthetic. It’s a game I’m glad I found years ago, and the type that still holds up whenever you manage to find it. Did you enjoy this review? I certainly hope so, and I certainly hope you'll check out more of them at https://goldplatedgames.com/ or on my curation page!

I'm going to give Shuggy a slight thumbs down. It's not that it's a bad game, just that it's an average game in a sea of much better games. Shuggy is a platformer with a couple of unique tricks. Unfortunately, it's marred by terrible controls that just feel off/ slippery. The number of times that I died not because I did something wrong but because the controls failed me added up to a lot of frustration. While the teleporter levels were fun, the timer levels were like pulling teeth. Add in the resolution problems that this game has, and I was already on the fence. The tiebreaker for me though was the fact that every single time you exit this game, you are presented with an ad for one of the developer's other games. If you hit the wrong button, rather than exiting the game you are taken to the website for the game in the ad. I'd just like to point out that a game I paid money for in Steam acts like a game I got on mobile for free :S Not cool. This game is a middle of the road 5/10.
Intro:
Adventures of Shuggy isn't a bad game, but is it something I can really recommend? not really. I played through the game and while it gave me a decent time, it was pretty short and didn't offer anything unique. I won't have too much to say about this one.
Gameplay:
Adventures of Shuggy is a puzzle game with quite a lot of variety. It can be fun for a playthrough, but the real problem with the game is it completely lacks originality. There's so little to say. Its not really designed poorly at all. Its just a game that can't come close to standing out amongst the thousands of indie titles on Steam. It was updated to have a bunch more levels (free) so that's nice, but I don't care enough to re-install it. There is a co-op mode that could possibly be fun enough to make me recommend this game, but I've never played it considering its local only. Its also not very high on the list of local co-op games to play. If I'm gaming with a friend we have so many better options.
Story, Visuals, & Music:
I can't remember the story at all. I know it had one, but it was so bland that I've forgotten it. The visuals are just okay. It almost has that cheesy flash style, but I've seen worse. Its enough to not be an eyesore, but I can't say anything positive about the artstyle. I didn't like the music at all. I have nothing against the genre of music they use, but it just isn't very good. Its really cheesy and composed poorly at times. Not a pleasant game to listen to.
PC Version:
The game runs fine and all that. The only thing I can really say is the co-op mode is local only. This game came out 5 years ago, but really - get with the times. I find it lazy at this point for indie developers to have local co-op only. The developer went to the trouble of making a separate campaign mode, but didn't make it playable over the net? May as well spent that time adding more singleplayer content.
Conclusion:
I'll say it again - this game isn't bad at all. Its just incredibly mediocre. If you can get it for under a dollar or so then it might be worth it, but I see no reason to pick this game out of everything on Steam.

This is not a horrible game, but it's still hard to recommend. Adventures of Shuggy is an unremarkable puzzle platformer with a story so generic it might as well not exist. The premise is simple: find all the gems in each level with the help of a given level's mechanic, while avoiding any source of danger. Most levels have one (rarely more) of several quirks: infinite jumps, super high jumps and gliding, rotating levels, a rope to hang on to and activate mechanisms with, etc. Sounds like a diverse experience, and at first it is! So, what is wrong with it?

Level design
The further you get into a game, the more challenging it should become, that's what we are all familiar with. Unfortunately, "more challenging" means "with more stuff on screen with seemingly random movesets for the player to keep an eye on and avoid in even larger levels" in this game. This approach is just not fitting for a puzzle platformer. Simply using more enemies to obstruct the player's way is not good level design. As for the level size, did I mention that you die in one hit, and when you do, you have to redo the entire level? Thus a level becomes more frustrating the larger it gets. But this would not be a big problem if not for the...

Controls and Hit Detection
The Controls are a little too floaty and unruly for this kind of game: You accelerate too fast, even in midair, and you never stop exactly when you let go of the directional button, which is crucial in a game where the hit-box detection is so unforgiving. Countless times have I fallen to my virtual doom because Shuggy would not jump off a ledge properly or hit his... eye (or something, since I am certain it could not have been the top of his head) on one while trying to jump onto it.

Conclusion
I dunno. I wouldn't recommend this game purely because I find that there are games that do everything, the puzzles, the platforming and the presentation, way better and are more deserving of your time. If you feel otherwise or really want to try this game out, then that's fine. Like I said, it's not a horrible game. Just seems frustrating, unfulfilling and kind of boring to me.
With Adventures of Shuggy, you get what you pay for. It’s not that long. Individual levels range drastically in difficulty and length, namely on account of the gimmicks. Overall though, nothing about it felt worth the experience to me. Platforming is annoyingly floaty and movement in general feels slippery. Every level has a gimmick, some are ok, like the rope tether, others are just a cause of frustration, like the time loop. Shuggy, the enemies, and the levels all lack charm, or noteworthy personality, despite their cartoonish/comical style. If you’re looking to collect green cartoon gems, Battleblock Theater is a better fit.

I don't know how good or bad this game is. But each time you quit, you see an advertisement for the developer's other games. I could accept that if the game was free, but IMO this is unacceptable for a product for which the customer paid money, even if it is not much.
