About the Game

Yuki Onna | 雪女 is a PS1 inspired survival horror game.

From the creators of

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1130620/Aka_Manto/

Jin is your son and the locals panicked when they heard that he went missing along with 2 elementary school girls. While the police were holding a heavy search around town, you receive 3 photos of the missing kids with some writing behind, "Come alone or I'll freeze them to death." Out of desperation, you decide to embark on a daunting rescue mission to an abandoned inn up the piercing cold mountains.

Yuki Onna | 雪女 is a similar game to Aka Manto, not a psychological horror/walksim.

The game is around 90 ~ 120 minutes long depending on your skill and playstyle.

Warning: This game is very challenging. You are only granted one life and death would mean a start over. If you are not confident with the ability to stay calm and persevere in the scariest of situations, you may find this game frustrating.

Features:

PSX/PS1 aesthetic: A nostalgic horror experience with visuals inspired by 5th generation games.

Survival horror - The enemies will constantly try and hunt you while you explore. You may resort to hiding, but who knows how well that goes.

Explore - Navigate through claustrophobic hallways. You may encounter interesting characters along the way.

Atmosphere - Old and abandoned Japanese house setting.

Puzzles - Bizarre and intricate puzzles.

Perma Death - One life, no saves. Every death counts to do better on the next round.

Replay value - Good ending? Bad ending? See which one you'll get.

Plays like a more forgiving, but also sloppier, version of Aka Manto. You’re basically roaming around a temple in the icy hills, looking for kidnapped children. It pretty much mirrors what you’ve already seen in some way or another. The maze might be a little more varied visually, but it feels very much cut from the same cloth -- hard to navigate and keep straight. But that's part of the puzzle I guess. I like the setting itself a lot more though. For me it’s definitely one of those experiences that’s hard to justify the entry point for if you’ve already delved into the previous title to some degree. It’s a pass for me, but not really a thumbs down -- if you can believe that.

Surprisingly fine little indie game, with crusty old graphics and copious amounts of dithering and other filters. The game-play has you exploring an old abandoned resort and finding objects to use in determined spots while avoiding the main baddie, the infamous Yuki Onna which it's mere presence is enough to make you shiver with cold, alerting you it's nearby, as they usually do in Japanese games she has more than one form and can place more and more advanced traps as the game progresses, there is another enemy that you can encounter, but I rather not spoil it; you also have only one life but regardless it's not a very difficult game, just be careful. There isn't much more to say about the game-play other than it's functional and even fun, it won't surprise you with it's depth, but its not trying either, despite that most of the 'puzzles' make sense, which is good, so no moon logic, it also has two endings, still, I can't see much reason to play it twice, most of the steps to achieve either ending can be done together and only a final choice matters and the endings aren't spectacular either. The game is very atmospheric though, it uses filters and props really well and make the place feel like a real location, plus despite the story not being anything to write home about, its still fun to pierce together what happened, one big problem is in the sound department, Yuki Onna is mostly silent making very faint noises that can't really be relied upon to be aware of her presence, that is, until she detects upon which she'll start screeching so high that you'll think your ears might bleed, It's possible you'll be more concerned with your ear drums than your life. tl;dr the game is fine, it's fun, cheap and can entertain you for a couple of hours, if you need your horror fix you can do a lot worse and at this price I'm just happy there is actual game-play for you to sink your teeth in.

Yuki Onna is horror game from Chilla's Art. While I love Chilla's Art games I didnt really enjoy this one. The visuals in this are much worse then other Chilla's games. The game warns you about proximity of Yuki Onna by something what was probably supposed to be shaking of camera but it is so badly done that it feels like the controls are glitching. The textures are glitching all the time too. I am not really fan of chase games and there is lot of chasing in this one. When Yuki Onna starts chasing you, you run away and you can hide in big pots and wait for here to go away. But twice it happened to me that she just woudn't go away. She kept camping the pot I was hiding in for several minutes, until I lost patience exited the pot and died .... and since there is no save system .... Not recommending this game, look for other Chilla's Art games, they are better.

overall probably a better game than Aka Manto (the only other game from this dev I've played). Puzzles are more innovative and the story is cooler, environment is interesting. Eventually of course it stops being scary, but the first run was extremely stressful in the best way possible, and then you figure out how everything works and completing the game is satisfying. Recommended especially if you like the low-poly look of the game
An Easier and Less Scary Aka Manto, But Still Worth Playing
Even if this review will be overwhelming negative when comparing to Aka Manto, I promise that the game is still good. I just want to note the downgrades from the previous game and how the Developers can take note of this going forward to perhaps find a middle ground in maing these types of game more accessible but still difficult and scary enough to warrant interest.
+ Complicated Puzzles
The level of complexity when it comes to puzzles is still there. You will struggle on your first and second playthrough for sure. Sadly my experience was that I had to use walkthroughs on Youtube to be able and figure out where to go and what to do in certain situations. So I just had to sit in a pot and watch the videos, which makes for a very bad experience. But that's my fault, that's on me and no one else. If you like the challenge, this is a good thing! After figuring it out and playing some more, it all becomes a smoother experience and much more enjoyable. I just had a bad first time, that's all.
+ Endings
Honestly the Escape Ending makes no sense or isn't even satisfying. After all that effort to save the 3 kids and escaping, I still.... die? I think? 1. First of all, where’s the kids? Are they just gone? Couldn't you at least put them in the car seats or something? 2. Did I even survive or not? When it said at the end: “save the kids. complete” it felt more like I failed than completed anything to be honest.. I was quite disappointing honestly. I haven’t done the Kill Ending yet, so I can’t speak for that, but maybe it's better.
Update - Kill Ending
I've now finished Ending 1, where you kill Yuki Onna. So it seems that I just assumed that the Escape Ending was the "Good Ending", but it turns out it's actually more of a "Bad Ending". So to answer my questions above: Yes, you die. Yes, you fail. It was a futile attempt since it turns out the car engine is dead due to the intense cold outside. The Kill Ending mentions that you are forced to walk to get help from a passing snow truck driver, which wouldn't work in this ending since Yuki Onna is still alive. Now I honestly feel more complete and have changed my opinion from a negative to a positive.
+/- Difficulty
This game is way easier than Aka Manto, by miles. It's easy enough that Perma Death doesn't even matter in this game. I personally think the difficulty is good for me, since I never could finish Aka Manto, but some other people might not like it. Here's some things that differs between the games: • 1 more inventory slot (3 in Aka Manto, up now to 4) • Smaller area, so it's easier to memorize the place pretty quickly, thus getting lost isn't an issue. (Memorizing all items and where to go and what to do, is still very difficult at first) • Bigger corridors and rooms makes escaping Yuki Onna a piece of cake. • Yuki Onna is very easy to avoid and isn't much of a threat. She isn't that aggressive and not very smart either it seems. Even she starts to chase you, it's super easy to get away. Just pot the nearest pot and jump in, and there you go. Safe and sound. This makes Yuki Onna super trivial to the point she isn't even scary. It’s kind of sad that she’s more of an nuisance than an actually scary threat that you need to be careful with. It's good for me, because I doubt I would ever complete the game without this, but it's still a bit sad that this wasn't just an extra game mode instead of the whole game being easy.
- Scary
This game is nowhere near Aka Manto in terms being scary. Here's a couple points where this game falls flat: • The area and the place itself is not really that creepy or scary. It's a fairly big place (as mentioned before in the difficulty section) and just appears to be a nice, coozy inn with an onsen when compared to Aka Manto’s scary and claustrophobic school corridors. • Yuki Onna isn't scary. Aka Manto made my blood start pumping, once he evolves I’m literally panicking! But Yuki Onna? Not so much. I mean I can barely even see her face, she so easy to avoid and if she runs towards you I can just hide in a pot without problems. Her screams aren’t even that scary either. She’s almost less scary once evolved honestly. Definitely a downgrade compared to Aka Manto, which is really sad to see. • Whirlpool Portals (or whatever) isn't that scary either. I get that it fits the theme with the game, but it doesn't make me scared. Not only don't I get scared because visually it doesn't look frightening, but Yuki Onna isn't a threat anyway so it doesn't matter. When I saw Red Portal in Aka Manto, I didn't even want to be in that room. In this game I couldn't care less. • Stationary Eyes aren't scary, just like the portals. They're just some eyes sitting here and there. The issue once again boils down to Yuki Onna being a piece of cake. I don't ever care if I run past the eyes, because not only doesn't it matter because they don't seem to really alert her, but she isn't much of a threat anyway. In Aka Manto, when I saw that Floating Head I knew I was soon to be in trouble, preparing for my escape. Here I just shrug my shoulders and go, "ehh, whatever". • Slime isn't even remotely scary. It fits the game, sure, but compared to Spiders and Centipedes from Aka Manto? It's not scary at all.
+/- Verdict
It’s still a good game without a doubt, but it falls a bit short. Aka Manto was way too difficult and scary, at least for me, to the point where I couldn’t beat it. Now I understand they wanted to make this game easier and more accessible to the casual players, but there’s other ways of doing that without making a worse game. I still think it’s a game worth playing for sure, but it’s certainly not at the level of Aka Manto. I just think that after playing Aka Manto, it has ruined my experience with this game, and I didn't even finish that game and still felt it was better.
Conclusion
• Aka Manto was too scary, too difficult. It was intriguing and interesting even still, but not accessible enough. • Yuki Onna is less scary, not that difficult, falls short on the story and atmosphere, but is far more accessible. Is a worse, but more accessible game, better than a too difficult one? I'll let you decide that one.

Yuki Onna is another great PS1 inspired title from Chillas Art, and fixed all the major problems I had with Aka Manto. The sole reason why I am not able to recommend it in its current state, is because of a bug/glitch I encountered, which was over half of the time the reason why I lost my progress. If I decided to run any stairs up from the Yuki Onna, I found myself stuck on the stairs, what seems like a texture glitch. The Yuki Onna somehow clips into me, making it impossible to move anywhere. The same happens once she is in her second form. If she gets too close, or I try to run past her, I get stuck inside her, unable to move yet again. My own failure is acceptable, but this makes it beyond frustrating. I will change my review, once this problem should be fixed. From the looks of several discussions, regarding Chillas Art titles, it doesnt seem like anything will be patched though. All the dev answers I see, are that they will use the information to make the next game better. But why not fixing the current one? I cant understand it. For the game itself, the atmosphere for this horror title is effective, the map has several differently designed floors and outdoor locations. Its a nice and fitting map. The Yuki Onna has her story, which can be read by finding all ice pieces scattered around the map. If she is near, the screen will shake and you see your breath, so you always know if danger is nearby. Watch out for the slime on the floor. It has many different items, which are all needed and useful in their own way. Since you can only hold 4 items at once, dropping them in safe places, or close to where you need them is key. Figuring out what to do with some of them can be hard but its nothing cryptic. I had a really good time with the game, aside from the glitch/bug that kept appearing. The behavior/programming of the Yuki Onna got improved a lot from Aka Manto. All In all I can only recommend this game, once this game breaker is fixed. Its a gem to have on Steam, cheaper than it should be and a scary experience. A PS1/retro styled horror game is always deeply appreciated.

This developer keeps improving over time, but they're still just shy of greatness. If they make another game similar to this and Aka Manto, but with some improvements, then it'll really be close to a perfect horror game. The most obvious flaw is that there is no save system, so you have to beat the entire game in one go, which will end up being a 2-4 hour endeavor. Of course if they do put in a save system, it should delete your save if the monster kills you to keep the spirit of the game, but allow someone to play a little bit, stop, then come back and pick up where they left off. The flaw that this game carried over from Aka Manto is that the monster will not leave you alone long enough to complete puzzles and make progress. Improvement was made of the last game in a few ways though. In this game the monster starts off weak and slowly gains more abilities instead of just have a bunch of mechanics the player has to look out for, they are introduced slowly as the player makes progress in this game. Yuki Onna's monster leaves you alone more than the monster in the last game, but can still end up forcing you to run and hide in the same place due to bad spawning. My proposed solution is to maybe include an item that the player can use to temporarily banish the monster for say a 3 minute period if they use it on the monster, but it would be a limited resource the player needs to find and in very small quantity. Or just teleport the monster much further from the player after a chase since frequently she will teleport away, but be close enough to encounter you pretty much immediately and it became luck based whether or not I could make progress or hide a lot. With the amount of backtracking the game makes you do, you really shouldn't run into her so much. Another idea would be to not change the monster's ai, but include a pseudo random chance to despawn the monster for a longer time; that way it could sometimes hound the player and cause them great fear or frustration, but eventually stop and let them go solve puzzles for a bit. I do appreciate the game not explaining any of her mechanics, just having them appear and letting the player figure it out. It makes it much scarier. I do believe the 1st encounter with the monster should be scripted though as the trigger for being near this monster confused me at 1st. The shaking and shivering made me believe there was a heat mechanic, and by sheer luck the 1st time I got it I avoided the monster on accident. Later she appeared behind me and after I ran away, she teleported in front of me near the furnace and I had no idea what she was since I hadn't seen her yet. I thought she was an npc or something, so she clawed my face. I also quite enjoy the puzzles. They force the player to have to look around and expose themselves to the monster. The limited inventory really adds to this as well. My only suggestion would be that the flashlight not occupy any slots since it's an item you can't afford to be without, possibly just an innate item. Alternatively, no flashlight, just adequate environmental light, and any light sources acquired are temporary items needed for puzzles and they break after finishing those puzzles. I'm looking forward to more from this developer.

Whoa. Not for me. I am a big fan of Chilla's Art, but this title missed the mark for me big time. It's incredibly difficult to see, the sound can only be described as an assault on my poor ears, and the AI is dreadful. I'm happy that some folks were able to get through the game to the end, but it is unplayable for me. Sorry friends. Purchase with caution... at 75% off or more. Seriously.
