  No sure why it has such negative reviews. Certainly playable combat system. It has rune magic and artifacts like wands. Typical combat system. Graphics are great. Nice dungeon crawler.

  Not even CLOSE to done, Janky controls, constant weird clipping of the environment, character getting stuck on pebbles every three steps, something just feels off about the camera, bad ui. and ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS COMBAT I get that you're supposed to be tactical use your environnment and all that and I like that about this game it has allot of potential, but if you get pushed into a one on one confrontation it becomes attack once block repeat. Honestly this feels like a beta build, but like I said there is potential, If they polish it some more, and I mean ALLOT more. but as it stands I think i'm going to request a refund which makes me sad as I was looking forward to this game for months. EDIT: They have acknowledged some of it's problems, if they truly do fix them I may consider rebuying and they might save this game. Until then I will watch and wait. Edit2: Patch 1.03 helped a LITTLE bit, controller support is still godawful, random fps drops, ui text won't stay on screen, just lost like 40 coins at the store because of some bug, (took all my water arrows without giving me anything in return) also i'm not sure the audio option for sound effects even works, turned it down quite a bit and still get allot of annoying humming from the environment. While I'm glad they've done "SOMETHING" they haven't done nearly enough, the latest patch didn't even fix some of the things they claimed completley ie still getting weird input lag from movement now and then, don't get me wrong it's better than it was but it still isn't done will try to continue updating this post as updates come out if there is any more.

  This game doesn't even have a basic working save system. You can pickup an item or gain an ability point, save and load, and the level resets making you lose progress AND able to pickup items and get ability points again. This is ridiculous. The physics and gameplay also feel horrible, especially when compared with games like Dark Messiah of M&M released a decade ago. Combat is extremely lame. You will easily fall through the floor in the same spot over and over, seams are just permanently there. There are a ton of little bugs and quirks that make no sense (like how you throw things from 5 feet above your head in a strange arc for some reason). This is nothing like Ultima Underworld, it's a basic game that was obviously forced out early for whatever reason.

  The game belongs in early access. It's not even remotely ready for "release". But if the devs keep doing their jobs, it'll most likely be a great game, some day. But not today.

  From a non-backer, non-Ultima Underworld vet who had no previous expectations about the game. I'm not going to tell you buy this...not yet. But that doesn't mean that I'm not going to tell you I enjoy and appreciate it for what it is. In 6 hours, I've seen glimpses of a very cool, almost roguelite first person action RPG. In that 6 hours I've frustratingly encountered game ending glitches, freezes and assorted graphical anomalies that were certainly unintended. I've also experienced an intriguing, innovative spell-casting system that I've not seen before (brings back fond memories of Arx Fatalis). The world is very immersive when the game isn’t freezing or killing me off for no reason. The character skill trees, while not altogether innovative (classic melee, magic and stealth trees) will clearly give enough incentive that I can see multiple playthroughs. The world is extraordinarily interactive and provides the flexibility of solving quests in a multitude of ways only limited to your creativity. This is a strength of the Underworld Ascendant experience. It’s a shame that this released as a broken, unfulfilled promise to a lot of people who are passionate and vocal about its roots. My hope being that the dev team doesn’t lose faith and can recover through diligent effort to repair the pieces that are broken, and improve on the areas that fell short. I’m about to fire up Update 2, and I’m excited to get back in and see the impact the latest patch has made. Again, I’m not encouraging you to pull the trigger, nor am I apologizing for the multitude of development issues at launch. What I am doing is letting you know that I’ve given it a fair shake, see the potential and truly, sincerely like what I see so far.

  So, first things first. This is a review of the game post Update 3. I purchased at launch, and the game wasn't playable. That wasn't great. Technologically the game has came a long way, but is nonetheless plagued with bugs, stutters, quality control issues, broken AI, and an art style best described as a particularly unoriginal child's boring fever dream. Other than that, I kind of love it. The game has evolved considerably since release, and a lot of the items that came afterwords - an interconnected world, for example - have really transformed what was an embarrassing tech demo into a wonderful little piece of weirdness. It's a dense little game world, filled with shortcuts and puzzles and traps. As you get more familiar with your surroundings, you start to be able to use the world to your advantage to conform to different play-styles. Despite the lack of dialogue, the world feels reactive to you, and the minor decisions you make (ex. burn a wooden bridge) tangibly matter when you return to the area. It reminds me most of "Deus Ex: Invisible War". That game, while similarly broken, had a sheer density to the world that gave weight to incidental decision-making; Underworld-Ascendant is the same. But whereas the latter accomplished that goal through, well, Dialogue Trees and vents, this one does so through small decisions you might not-even realize you're making. For a game that's so in-your-face with certain aspects (ex. the stupid lizards), it ends up being surprisingly subtle in certain respects. It all adds together to, when it works, create a specifically-bizarre atmosphere that, somehow, despite itself, totally works and feels utterly unique. So, if "utterly unique" and "somehow works" sound appetizing to you then, by all means, buy it. It's not for everyone. Fans of Ultima will hate it, as its nothing like those games. Fans of the Kickstarter will hate it, because its nothing like that game was described to be. But I love it: it is unashamedly itself, and it utterly ignores anything that has changed in gaming since, well, Invisible War came out in 2003. Just approach it on its terms, and you might find something special.

  Being a huge fan of the underworld games from the early 90s I broke the habit of a lifetime, threw caution to the wind, and bought Ascendant on release day without reading ANY reviews or early impression articles. Although the game was developed as a kickstarter project I knew that some members of the original team were involved, so at the very least I expected a pared back, atmospheric dungeon crawler; maybe not as pretty or long as a modern triple A release but full of the minutiae and charm that gave the Ultima series it's much deserved legendary status back in the day. Those first few hours spent with the game certainly brought me back down to earth with a bump. On the plus side the game was prettier than I expected, but the negatives piled up: zero atmosphere, poor controls, glitchy interactions with the environment, no NPCs, and an overall feeling that the game was unfinished. This was compounded when I realised that the save game system only tracked which level you were in and restarted that level whenever you re-loaded! An hour of progress wasted! Being a PC gaming veteran I swallowed my disappointed and let the game sit, hoping that things would change in a few weeks (months!) with a patch or two. After the second big patch I jumped back in around the end of February 2019. There were some good improvements after the patch: less glitches when moving around, performance improvements, redesigned levels, NPCs introduced earlier on, and most importantly a save system that now works as it should! However, the game still suffers from an overall lack of atmosphere and lack of compelling story / quest-lines. The feeling that this game is still in beta pervades almost every aspect: scant sound design, repetitive looking environments, janky animations, un-intuitive menus, and generally uninspired gameplay. I tend to let un-played games languish on my hard drive for months on end just in case I get the urge to give them another shot. After a dozen times scanning over this game in my library I have come to the sad realisation that I have zero desire to ever play it again. This is NOT the underworld game I was looking for. If you managed to get this game on deep discount, and went in with low expectations, I can see the average RPG fan getting a a few hours of entertainment out of it. If, however, you are looking for the next Ultima Underworld / System Shock / Arx Fatalis / etc. then move on - this isn't the game for you.

  This game had too many issues when it got released, but as of Update 4 it is reasonably polished, and a very satisfying experience. For me, the best part of this game is its magic system. As you progress through the game and explore the world, you find magic runes and upgrade your skills, which lets you cast more varied and advanced spells. To learn new spells, you have to discover their runic formulas – you can do that through experimentation, but a lot of those formulas are inscribed on the walls in specific places, which encourages exploration. The key to combat magic is to discover "harm" spells (and their advanced variants) which target specific enemy types. For example, Harm Person spell will only affect living humanoid enemies, but will hurt the player if no valid enemy is targeted. Harm Spirit spell will damage undead enemies, or cloud the player's mind if there is no other valid target. There are also generic projectile attack spells that will harm whatever they hit, but they are less effective than the specialized spells. Magic also allows you to easily traverse the terrain (teleport behind bars or portullis, create climbing ropes, magically ascend or descend). You can also summon creatures, shields, traps or random items, bind or push your enemies, create fires or put them out (for stealth), slow time, or levitate various objects. Character advancement system in this game is very unique. There are no experience points or levels. Instead, you gain Skill Points by completing Feats – for example, if you kill an enemy with fire, you get the Firestarter feat. Each feat can only be completed once, and rewards one skillpoint. So in order to advance, you have to kill enemies and complete your objectives in various creative ways, explore the world and try new stuff. Thankfully, the prerequisites for each Feat are listed in the in-game Compendium, so you always know what you have to do in order to get more skill points. This also means that there is a finite amount of skillpoints you can get in one playthrough, and you can't respec your skills, so plan ahead and choose wisely! Once you complete the game there is an option to start a New Game Plus, where you start up with no skills but with some bonus skillpoints, which lets you build a more powerful character on your second playthrough. The loot game also felt very satisfying to me. At first, you will only find basic gear with no magic properties, but as you progress and explore you will be able to find or buy various artifacts with interesting and unique bonuses.

  Disclaimer: I bought the game during the 2019 steam summer sales for 17,49€ (used a -5€ discount). That said at this price in my opinion it's absolutely worth it if you like dungeon crawlers and dark fantasy games. You will certainly enjoy it more if you played old titles such as Thief, Ultima Underworld, Arx Fatalis... Underworld Ascendant suffered from a very bad launch, the game was riddled with bugs, it was poorly optimised and was simply not fun to play. The players reviews were almost all negatives, same for the press reviews... As i didn't wanted to a play a bad game, i have been waiting months and months, regularly checking the game updates and patches to see if some changes were made into the game. At the time writing this review (update 4), i will say that the game is worth getting now. Of course it's far from perfect, there's still a lot of collision bugs, physics are kinda wonky sometimes and there's optimisation issues (thanks unity engine). Also the AI seems to be a bit limited and somehow the gameplay may feel clunky when doing some tasks. But i think what the game has to offer is worth forgiving those problems (if you can ofc). The game atmosphere is really unique, there's something quite mystical and intriguing about this game. During the adventure you will be constantly gathering new gear/weapons, discovering treasures, obtaining new skills or spells... It's really rewarding and it definitely encourage the player to watch his steps, analyse the environments and carefully explore every corners to get the best treasures and loot. Overall exploring the underworld is entertaining, it will take a lot of hours to reveal all the lore and secrets. Gameplay wise i like it, the mix between ranged and close quarter combat is good. The combat and magic system take some time to get used to it but in the end it's pretty solid once you have learned the ropes. Technically the game graphics are pretty good in ultra, lots of details with nice lighting effects (maybe too much bloom for my liking tho). Sadly there is not a lot of graphical options to tone it down, only 6 different presets (from very low to ultra)... Anyway so far i really like the game and can safely recommend it to fans of Thief, Underworld and maybe Arx Fatalis to a certain extent. Just don't expect a triple A quality game and you may have a good time playing it. It's rough around the edges, it's old school, it doesn't guide the player too much, i like that. I saw some people leaving bad reviews saying the game crashes a lot, personally so far i'm 10+ hours in and haven't encountered a single crash... Now excuse me i have to go and dive deeper into the UNDERWORLD.   It's kind of amusing how much everyone talks about the bugs in this game and not the real problems. While it is buggy, it's buggy in a janky way that's kind of funny. The real problem is that nothing you do matters, there are no rewards for exploration, just things to stuff your inventory with that are worthless. Weapons degrade over time so nothing you find is of any real value or purpose, enemies have so much HP that it's tedious and you have to wait a long time before your melee combat is of anything other than charge, backup, forward, release, charge, repeat until dead. Mana is... weird... so magic, while interesting in how you discover it, isn't a resource you can really lean on any harder than anything else. This genre of game requires the exploration be useful, but in my entire playtime, there are 0 instances of my thorough exploring being rewarded with literally anything that was not similar in quality to something I already had, and thus stuffing my inventory to the brim, and making it so I can't take anything I can find, assuming I wanted to. I also find that it runs poorly, can't get close to constant 60 FPS without there being enough on screen to warrant the dips, and that's on Medium. I'm really baffled by this, as I expected people were over reacting a bit with their expectations, and I came into the game just expecting some kind of dungeon crawl and finding neat things to use to go new places, but there was none of that to be had. There's a dungeon crawl, but that's about it. It's not even necessarily bad, but there's a complete lack of anything I'd call good.
