  I'm gonna be a little harsh with this since there is a lot of reviews already pointing out the good things. (If you're looking into this for [b]Touhou[/b] reasons, please read the very last part.) First of all, simplicity is a huge upsite, but in this case it gets evened out by the limitations that come with it. There is no way of using complex ways to do things that aren't possible with this tool's simplicity. No costum code, no more than the slightest cosmetic changes for the 3 option Main Menu with a singular image for the title and a scrolling background behind it, aswell as similar things applying to the HUD of the game you're making. You can't truely costomize these things, rather only slightly reskin the evisioned preset design of the creator of this engine. The only places where you have full controll is the content of levels. As the examples show there is a lot of unique and interesting things you can do within these, despite the limited tools. But for me that exitement paled quickly as I realized that outside of these levels, you cannot create any kind of scene that isn't "a level" and have no real control over how different scenes connect. Game mechinacs are also something you can not truely control. There is basically only checkboxes for some features and if these are features are not something you'd like, you're basically sutck with having no interesting gameplay. With these flaws combined, any product made with this tool I'd come across I'd easily write off as "Oh, just some SHMUP Creator thing" and not look into it since I know, something made in this cannot truely be unique. [h1][b]My[/b] conclusion[/h1] is that this is fun to play around with and definitely someones passion project, but if you're looking into creating a serious and legit project, I'd recommend using less restrictive tools. Now, if you're interested into making any Touhou-related content with this I'd straight up recommend you to not buy. It basically lacks every single key feature you'd need to create anything coming close to Touhou's original formula. Starting with most basic ones such as speed variations on button press or a normal way to have power based shooting to set up of the screen. Alternatives are harder but look into them unless this gets big changes.

  Listen, this is a good engine for making SHMUPS. Super simple, really easy to use, but you will not be able to distribute the games as advertised. I spent 33 hours developing a game in this, only to find out that I'm unable to distribute or export my product without the developer's splash screen. There's no fix, and no support in the forums. If your goal is to distribute a game, DON'T BUY THIS ENGINE. Otherwise, if your goal is just to mess around and have some fun making your own shmup, then you'll have a blast.

  PLEASE REMOVE THE MANDATORY SECOND SPLASH SCREEN OR PROVIDE THE OPTION TO CUSTOMIZE IT This isn't even a regular splash screen; it's as if you're developing the whole game. What we need is a standard export file that includes optional elements like a 'powered by' message, similar to what RPG Maker allows. That's why we're paying for the Engine. The splash screen should be mandatory if the engine is used for free.

  Well as I now have used this for 20 plus hours time for a review. Firstly, this is what many, many people have been wanting for a very long time, it knocks the other "Shoot 'Em Up" game makers for six. Why? Simple, ease of use, powerful, you can see your ideas come to life within the editor and instantly, ultra smooth parallax scrolling, very, very fast bullet engine, importing assets is just a case of dragging your sprites, backgrounds etc, into the respective project folder, and as soon as you return to the editor it updates inside the "Game Box" ( the part of the editor that you choose your assets from ) Everything is changeable, bullet patterns, speed, scrolling, I could list them all, but do yourself a favour. If you have a shoot 'em up idea then just make the purchase, you will not regret it. Oh yes, the devs are always speedy and updates are always just around the corner, to date there have been 5 updates. Review Update 01: I have now been using this a lot lately and so far everything is falling into place, all the different editors, particles, weapons, enemies are so well laid out and easy to use. This really is a NO CODE option for all Shoot 'em up creators, 1st class software. Bugs are being fixed, but the bugs are no mega bad anyways. Still no crashes here either. Buy, Buy, Buy. Best purchase on Steam for a long long time. Review Update 02: Nearly 200 hours on this now and I have to say, it is still amazing. Updates are regular and not just bug fixes, new features, additions are being added. The devs are always helpful, and will respond to any queries and will engage with the user. Having a real blast, literally with this. Treat yourself even if you think you "might" want his, I'm sure you will be using it a helluva lot. Review Update 03: I have now over 300 hours on this. Firstly all that I said in my previous reviews is still true, but oh my has this software evolved. Now sound effects can have slight pitch variations, so when firing bullets or having explosions going off they can all have slight differences and that really is an awesome feature. Focus mode. This software just gets better and better, if your even just considering buying this, don't hesitate, just do it. The devs are always on hand to offer advice and bug fixes are getting much more rare now as the software is stable and almost bug free. Great stuff.

  I am a professional developer, who also create games with Godot. I even created a shmup tutorial https://github.com/programaths/shmup-tuto. So, why am I recommending this software if I can do something better and more flexible ? Because this is not a all purpose game making software, it's dedicated to shmup. Which means that it has UI geared toward the specifics of the genre. Don't expect to make a Mario clone, don't expect to even create a twin stick shooter. That's like tacking a raster editing programs and wanting to edit vector graphics and videos. You may also think it pricey, after all, you could use a game engine for free. But what you pay is the work to piece the software together so you only have to click few buttons and get your shmup of your dreams on track! You are paying for the ease of use and the work behind it. I will not really use the software, because it's limited for me, and I can make a better thing from scratch. I bought out of curiosity. Still, I highly recommend it, if you don't want to spend years before even reaching the same level of effectiveness when using this software. I have a bachelor in industrial computing (the hardest curriculum at that level in IT, with more that 25 years in IT and 14 of them professionally. So, it's quite normal that this software is irrelevant to me. Yet, I am recommending it, because I don't think everyone want to spend that much time before being able to get close to what this can output. So, if you want to have fun instead of having to learn a lot before even moving a ship on the screen, buy this. You can think if this as RPG Maker, but for shmups. Also, it's not bad at all to use this and RPG maker to learn the game play, story telling and see those in action while quickly iterating. Once in ease with that, then you can move on one step closer to generic game engines, then, why not, make your own! Don't be fooled by tutorial to create games in 10 minutes. I made a comprehensive tutorial on Shmup, it's 5 hours and it's only an introduction. If you are unsure, buy this. Get a taste of game design first.

  Don't buy it! The price of the product does not deserve the fact that you cannot change the home screen of your games and through your games and your time you advertise this software. Go to Game Maker, it's free, it's easy and you can change everything!

  I dream in side scrollers and now SHMUP Creator brings those dreams to life! Thoughtful design implementation, the developer knows shoot em ups (or shooters before FPS took the name) and is very passionate! This shows as a labor of love. Even if you want to use another engine for your SHMUP, this is worth checking out just to understand just how fast you should be able to iterate to refine the gameplay. The core community is also quite passionate!

  The app's UI & UX is very friendly & easy to use. There are many tools available and they can help creating enemies with complex movement & attack patterns. But it seems impossible to insert custom code - I only have played around with the software for 1 hour so I'm not really sure how will this impact on the game development experience later. (What if I want even more complex behaviors?)

  Really interesting program, I only have a small note: it would be interesting to have a ship (or character) choice menu. Using a single ship can get boring after a while.
