After sticking to RPG Maker for 7 years, it is time for me to move on to something more professional, and before I do so, I wanted to break down all pros and cons of this engine. Pros +Teaches how variables and values work, even someone who has never been into gamedev can learn basic concepts of it. +Comes with default assets, which include not only sprites, but also animations and SFX +Every option and function has own description when you hover over it with a mouse, it helps beginners a lot. +It comes with premade battle system, although I myself never was too found about it +It has premade UI and menus for a typical JRPG game +Lets you add own plugins and scripts to customize the game even more, including game resolution and splash screen. +You don't have to write a single line of code Meh =There is a lot you can achieve in basic RPGM MV even without plugins, if you know the program well. Unfortunately you won't find many pointers inside it that would help you with anything more ambitious than standard retro RPG. You need to scour the forums and tinker around yourself to realize you can make things like timers, custom menus, or some cool stuff with parallaxes. Big props to Busted Ed's Tips 'n Tricks, which really helps understand how much you can do in RPGM programs by manipulating events in certain ways, even achieving psuedo 3d effects. Cons -It is very limiting if you want to do anything other than JRPG -If you want some simple things like idle animations, custom frame number for sprites, diagonal movement, or just disabling mouse clicks, then your only option is go to the internet and download plugins made by the users, some of them being paid ones (bless Galv and their free library of spripts and plugins). Things like this should be in the engine by default. -If you want to have custom graphics, you are also very restricted. The spritesheets can be resized, but only as long as the proportions are kept (aka 3:4, 3 frames of animation per 4 directions its facing, even if the object will be stationary and not move at all or only move horizontally, you still need to have a sheet that treats it like it always has 12 frames in total) -Additionally, by default the point of origin of objects is located at the bottom centre and cannot be changed. While it does make resized sprites look bettern than in XV Ace (where point of origin was bottom left for some reason), it becomes a problem when you want your custom characters and objects to interact with the environment. -Each time a new project is created, the program copies entire asset library to that project, which is somewhere between 300 and 400MB. If you want to check something in several test projects, then that's a few GB to sacrifice. -For this price, it really is missing a LOT of basic features. Needing to write or find a plugin to disable linear interpolation?? in a PIXELART game?? RPGM programs have been around for decades yet still nobody thought to implement interpolation options even though it is designed to be an engine for pixel art games. Summary I've spent few hundreds hours with RPGM MV and VX Ace (though my steam is not showing that as i mostly used it in offline mode), I started out as a teen that wanted to make something for myself and my family, and this was a great tool for that. However, after some time I really wanted to make my own dream game and unfortunately this tool was anything but useful for that. It's great for LEARNING but not for making a good quality game, commercial or not. If you never learned any programming language, don't know much about gamedev, you are a hobbyist, or just want to have some sort of loose prototype for a commercial game, this is for you. BUT do not buy it at the full price. Wait till there is a sale, it usually goes around 75% off , though in my opinion it is still a lot for buggy and incomplete engine. TL;DR It was fun, until I tried GameMaker, then my face looked like Surprised Shaquille O'Neal meme.

If you want to make a game of a decent length, and you're putting it together by yourself, prepare to spend quite awhile working at it. Just as a reference from my own experience, the 1200+ hours I've logged in MV was to make a single game of roughly 4 hours of play time on my own. That's not counting the handful of past projects in earlier versions of RPG Maker that I worked on, and then abandoned partway through creating them, while I learned more about how the software works and what could be done with it. The great thing about RPG Maker is that, thanks to already including the basic assets and materials necessary to create a game, you can do so by yourself even without having all the skills, knowledge, help, or budget that usually goes into creating a video game. If you can't draw to save your life, or you don't have the slightest clue where to begin with music production, that's okay. RPG Maker MV (or any of the other entries in the series) gives you a generous selection of resources by default that you can use to create your own game, and you're free to use them without restriction as long as it is to create something within the RPG Maker software. You don't have to know how to program or code software from scratch either. The game building engine is, primarily, user friendly with a visual interface that allows you to make a game just by choosing from the options in its menus. There is a learning curve even with that, especially for some of the more advanced features, and there is room for growth if you want to learn how to make scripts and programming, or create your own pixel art for custom sprites, etc. There is also a lot more you can do with RPG Maker by adding new functionality with community-made scripts and plugins though, and even if you do not know how to create those kinds of things yourself, others who do have shared them freely with the community, and you need only understand enough about how to use them to implement them into your game. Overall though, the power of being able to unleash your creative ideas is what makes RPG Maker alluring, especially when you're just starting out. It takes a lot of dedication, and probably a few practice projects before you tackle a full one, but it enables almost anyone to create something in a visual way with enough patience and tenacity. It's not the kind of thing you're going to be finished with overnight, or in a week, or even a month. Creating games is a very time consuming process. Just know that in order to see any project through to completion, it's going to take a lot of time and effort on your part, even with RPG Maker doing a lot of the heavy lifting on providing resources and user-friendly tools. It's also not ideal for adapting other types of games outside of the role-playing game genre either. Although there are some examples where it has been done, there are better engines out there if you want to make a differnt type of game altogether. You don't need the latest and greatest version of RPG Maker either. Although the newest one will feature the most bells and whistles, especially when you're starting out, you can do just as well with an earlier version to learn how it works before making the jump to the more expensive latest entry too. While there are of course some differences between them, by and large, the majority of things transition over between versions. And even the older versions of RPG Maker are able to create fantastic games with the right dedication, passion, and folks with the right set of skills to really make their games shine. I learned most of my early days stuff back in RPG Maker XP when that was new. I would guess about 95% of the knowledge I gained back then applied still to RPG Maker MV years later, allowing me to finally make my own fully completed game. To The Moon is a popular example that uses RPG Maker XP even in more modern times to wonderful effect. It's more about what goes into the project than what game engine version you decide to use. At the end of the day, even if you just try it out of curiosity, there's something to be said for being able to express yourself in a creative way in a visual fashion that you can see as it comes to life. RPG Maker helps to make that possible for those who want to make their own game, but it would normally be out of their reach, and that's something to praise it for. It helps people make their creative ideas into reality, so give it a try if you find yourself interested at all. You never know, you might end up making your own game with it too.

If you want to make a game, there are FAR EASIER products to work with. This fucking piece of shit keeps giving me errors when doing the tutorials. It's like the damn Japs can't get their fucking heads out of their asses on ANY subject. Somehow the tutorials contain pedantic instructions while simultaneously giving little to no actual information. Following the tutorials to the letter results in your character getting stuck in the playtest as the interactions don't work correctly. Every play test results in me getting an error due to the game being a newer version of some ".js" file. It says some features are disabled. Yet it gives me NO WAY TO FIX IT! I haven't played with this in a couple of years, have virtually no experience with coding, but was wondering if the new "MZ" version of this would be worth trying out. FUCK THAT!!! I'm NOT dumping hundreds of more dollars onto ANOTHER busted ass piece of shit. The reviews for MZ already say that it isn't much of an evolution. And most of the "MZ" dlc's say that they are exactly the same as "MV" with just the name being changed. With the drag and drop nature of other engines, their free to use models, and their highly detailed tutorials, THIS FUCKING IP should be taken out behind the barn and shot. Unreal and Unity use much more horsepower to run, but they also FUCKING WORK!!! And they don't require hundreds of dollars just to Alpha test the goddamned thing. I wouldn't recommend GameMaker, either. I tried that, and their fucking tutorials can't be imported into their fucking product. Hmmm...Now I'm wondering if the idiots that make most of the porn games have day jobs as Game engine makers.

Make sure to: _________ -Not compare your game to others, every game is unique -Drink water -Take breaks, days off to avoid burnout -Talk to your friends -Remember to enjoy yourself!

I didn't realize that the base program only comes with a very limited set of assets. Much of the content is locked behind ridiculously pricey DLCs. I mean, there are 643(!) DLCs right now, and every single one of them costs money. Want a snowy tileset? $20. Want some male voices? $35, but only for priests. Those are separate from the female priest voices, which are also $35. Want soldier voices? That'll be another $70 for both genders. Robot enemies? $25. It's ridiculous. I wish I had realized that before I bought it. I didn't figure it out until it was too late, or I would have gotten a refund. On the plus side, it looks pretty robust and has decent(ish) tutorials. I guess if you're willing to spend hundreds of dollars, go for it.
