Definitely Not Otome but Shotacon?

A short and sweet review here, I liked the game its a mixture of time management, item collections and triggering events. However it is super time limited so if pressure is not in your alley then i don't think its for you. The story is mysterious, but as the name suggests this is not an Otome, basically you are taking care of a child with a mysterious past. The game leaves tips on how to play it, I remember doing these insane brain teasers as well (I really still don't understand how Pirate A is the answer to the last question gg) You basically raise the child, buys him toys and books, you get closer with him and you find out his secret past and help him. This is basically it, the plot. Whats unique here is that you need to buy SOME items in a specific order and under the correct time frame, otherwise you get a bad end. That's pretty insane considering you have to always look out for clues and there are many things to buy. And progressing more in the game I understood that only some items should be specifically used in the time frame, and other items a cutscene will trigger no matter when after you have bought it. I honestly took notes in the end and each decision matters honestly. Oh and you must also pay attention to the child's mood levels, gain his trust etc. It's a lot of work to do in a small VN, so many multiple things to look out for tbh and can be exhausting. but i guess its a bit satisfying. Not gonna lie, the endings were super hard to get since the game play is affected by these third variables. So yes no wonder the rarity of the achievements, I honestly thing me getting all of the achievements is just luck. The story is worth hearing though, it took an unexpected turn. But i also feel that its just short and it could have been made more interesting like an after story would have been more better. And you are basically stuck in this small town and it feels mundane and boring a little bit, travelling to a bit of locations even in a VN is refreshing really. The characters are fine nothing major interesting. The female lead is a tsundere. All in all an okay VN if you need some simulation and just an interesting read. Not otome of course but there were some hints of shotacon but that could just be me.

Hmm, I feel neutral about this game

I don't think I would play it a second time. I do like mysteries in stories, but only If I can find out everything, otherwise it's just frustrating. I played the game for a longer time than usual visual novels & I still can't get all endings. I was only able to get all Jake endings. At the start of the game the narrator thing tells you that buying items within certain times unlock scenarios, & that those items will be put in "conspicuous places" in the shop, but I didn't find the places very conspicuous at all. It also said the text would be in purple for hints, but there barely was any. My first play through was very short & very boring. I found myself doing the daily schedule for days, without seeing any scenarios or art scenes. Once I got the hang of it, it was slightly better, but still kinda boring. I feel like that's a common first play through? It doesn't really give any incentive to continue after that, even if the art scenes have such a lovely art style. The text translations were also... Stale? Stiff? There was a couple of cute/funny interactions between characters, but especially for the character we play as, the conversations left much to be desired. Basically the game doesn't help you at all in finding how to do things, even if it said it would. Also on the community discussion page of the game, the developer said their Discord server has lot's of hints for the game. However when I joined, they had things of their other games, but not Little One. It's like they gave up on their game. I find it hard to recommend this game at it's current price, as I think nothing makes up for it. If you happen to get it for free, definitely give the game a go. If it happens to have a good sale, then that's also better than base price, but I still wouldn't say it is worth it. ⠀⠀⠀─────────────────»»❀❀❀««───────────────── TLDR; PROS ✿ Lovely art style ✿ Good music to to set the feelings of scenes ✿ Enjoyable short stories from Jake ✿ Strategy, schedule making system; ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Schedules raise or lower Jake's personality traits CONS ✿ Stiff, lack of personality speech translations ✿ Tutorial is very basic & a little misleading ✿ How much of certain traits needed to unlock scenes is very strict ✿ Time window for buying shop items to unlock scenes also seems strict ✿ Not good for inpatient people ✿ Very slow build up in the story with little reward ✿ Seems & feels like developers gave up on the game

I recommend to buy this game on sale. Over all it is really short and has some flaws. There are some typical options missing (like skip read text) and some translation mistakes. Over all I don't think it is a bad VN per se. It is a difficult topic and I wished it would go much deeper and not just slightly touch it.

    !CONTAINS SPOILERS!
LITTLE ONE
"Can you take care of him for a while?" Reading a visual novel set in the early 1900s is not something I expected, while browsing Reddit I saw an advertisement for the game. With over seven hours in the game, I am yet to even achieve half of the endings. While far from being Dark Souls, expect something on the difficult side compared to other games of the genre. You can't brute force your way through the VN thanks to the RPG mechanics. You must take care of Jake, a traumatised and shaken boy who shows signs of psychosis and abuse. This is no simple task both for you and the aged woman you play as. Jake is ill in a time where mental health was not something clearly researched, or even understood. Even in a playthrough where a lot of your actions are right, the orphan may still have a breakdown to give you a bad ending depending on your actions or the items that you buy. As stated - while the game is not difficult compared to others, it is hard compared to other visual novels. The game's themes of abuse and mental health is not for everyone, but it might be a small treat for those with average knowledge in the area.
-The Gameplay-
Consider "Little One" as a management visual novel. You must give Jake tasks to follow in order to boost his stats, but you must also be vary of your choices during various game encounters to not lower his trust and panic level. Simple on paper, but not everything may go as well as it seems! Jake's stats and your choices will affect future events, both good and bad ones. I thought I had everything figured out by focusing on Jake's stats and trust, but that wasn't the case, as either items or decisions trigger a bad ending. Some not so obvious, but the dialogues with Jake may reveal triggers.
Jake, short character analysis & spoilers
Thanks to various factors in his life, Jake is traumatised. In my two playthroughs, I have discovered that
Jake's mother and sister are most likely alive.
yet he has not mentioned
his father.
Leading me to believe that his fear of
hurting others
stems from him
possibly killing his father.
Jake's delusions are powerful enough, to the point where he'll lose his grip on reality. Claiming that
you are one of "THEM".
Who
"they"
are is yet to be revealed in any of my current playthroughs.
Final Words...
The game is written quite well, with Jake (and Andy) as characters being interesting enough to make me want to achieve every possible ending. There are nine endings, surprisingly enough. The developers and writers have for sure create characters who are mysterious to the player, where you'll only want to find the missing pieces in Jake's story. There are some details that help establish the setting of the world itself, such as chocolate being a commodity and the work life of both you, Jake, and several characters. There are some spelling mistakes, like 'your' instead of 'you're' and 'cleary' instead of 'clearly'. I recall during the quiz, some of the character names (or, titles) were suddenly in Chinese. These problems can ruin the immersion when they happen to some. If you want a decent visual novel set in an industrial setting with psychological themes and important decisions, then please do buy "Little One". I'd put the play time (to get all the endings) at possibly ~5 hours if you're very familiar with the mechanics.

Although the visuals and the programming for this game are up to snuff, I'm afraid that a large portion of the dialogue and descriptions comes across as stiff and awkward - to the point where they could've been written by a twelve year old. I'm going to assume that English was simply not the writer's first language and admit that by that standard their grammar might be seen as impressive. But sadly, for a story like this that has a lot of focus on human emotion, it's difficult to draw the audience in to really sympathize with the characters when the interactions are so unnatural. For a significant portion of the game, almost everything meant to convey emotional vulnerability or unexpected emotional depth comes off as irrational or as some downright childish overreaction. I think something that I did like about the game however, was the bits of character development they did with Jake's fiction writings. I've completed one playthrough and ended up with a bad ending - I think my stats needed to be higher, as a crucial choice option wasn't available to me. At the end of the day, I admit the game has its good points... but I'm glad I picked it up on sale rather than paying full price.

I don't have much to say about this game, but I wanted to do a review anyway. The story is definitely bittersweet. It's about a troubled boy, named Jake, who has clearly been abused at some point, and ends up staying with the protagonist. Over a few months, the protagonist has to consider her decisions carefully, so that boy can learn to trust her. This is an extremely important aspect of the story, because if you fail to make the right decisions, the bad endings are very sad. Spoiler:
It's revealed in the end that the boy is not an orphan, but an escaped insane asylum victim. For those unaware, asylums were horrible places back then. It is heavily implied that's where the boy was abused. It would seem that the reason the boy feels guilty for the protagonist taking care of him all the time is because he's had to lie about being an orphan and about having a personality disorder of some sort, at the request of Andy, the person who brought the boy to the protagonist.
My biggest complaint is that Andy's endings are incredibly difficult to figure out. I played the game several times and wasn't able to figure out either of Andy's achievement endings. I joined the Discord for help, but while the publisher wanted to help, the devs, apparently, haven't ever given helpful advice. The choices involving his endings are just really unclear as to what they do. Some choices even seem so similar that I wasn't able to deduce any difference between them, but one led to another event happening, while the other led to nothing. If there's that significant of a difference, then why not make the choices clearly different? Anyway, I give up. No one on the Steam discussions has answers and no one on the Discord has answers. I still recommend it because the story is still worth the read. I really enjoyed it despite the issues with Andy's endings.

This is bittersweet stuff when you get to the details, but I recommend it. Someday I will actually get a happy ending, . . . maybe. Edit: Got a good ending. Still bittersweet but totally worth it.
