As you can see from the trailer, this goes further than most retro games into creating an "authentic" NES look and feel. That includes "NES difficulty," and I don't just mean the game is hard. It's hard in the dumb, janky ways that a lot of NES games were. I mean really annoying enemies with placements that are complete BS to deal with. Hope you like climbing a ladder with an enemy camping at the top of it (of course you will get hit by touching him). But this is a fun challenge if you're up for that. You can loop it like an arcade game, with neat things happening when you beat it more than once in a row. Combat is very similar to Zelda II with sub-weapons from Castlevania thrown in. You can find randomized upgrades as you go, which will dramatically affect how your run goes. If you're man enough, play this sht. Oh, and the CRT mode is very nice. --- Update 7/14/2017: Once you've beaten the game multiple times and gotten the good ending, it becomes a bit too RNG-dependent. My runs consistently succeed or fail based on whether I find a specific item during the run. I still recommend the game since I had a really good time with it up until this point.

Roguelike side scrolling platformer, and there's some fun to be had here, but the controls need to be just a little bit tighter to be a recommend. Try fighting near a ladder and you'll regret your purchase.

This game is a little lacking in fun factor and content. It's really short (I beat it in 3 hours), and to me there doesn't seem to be much reason to replay it. Both of those factors seem crazy for a roguelike. The graphics are amazing though, one of the few retro games that genuinely looks like it's from back in the day. The CRT emulation settings are really cool, especially the way it makes it look like you're using an old TV with curved edges. You can even see the reflection of sprites on the edges of the "physical" tv. That really took me back. The music is ace too. The gameplay just isn't too compelling.

I liked Gunmetal Arcadia Zero, but this one didn't click with me. The base game mechanics worked so well in Zero, but I don't think they are very suited for a roguelite sidescroller so the two core aspects of the game are at odds with each other and that makes for a much worse overall experience. It's also pretty weird and inauthentic to put a modern genre like roguelite into such a nostalgia-oriented game, but I'd have been fine with it if it worked well. I don't think it does though, so here we are...

This game looked really intriguing: nice chiptune soundtrack, charming pixel art that still sticks to NES limitations, and random generation to keep it fresh. While these features are executed well, I found the gameplay to be severely lacking, esp. if you compare it to the NES titles it's drawing from. To put it succintly: the combat is just not fun. A good deal of enemies simply walk at you, but because of how quickly you can swing your default sword you're in no real danger of them ever hitting you. Most fights boil down to an enemy trying to walk into you while you mindlessly mash attack until they die. The only enemies who pose any threat to you are the tiny ones who either dash at you or shoot at you, often at the border of the camera before you can see them. While this is accurate to how a lot of old titles played, I don't think it's very good game design. The bosses seemed a bit better, I'll admit, but there's just so much tedium in between them. Then there are more minor quibbles: chests that spawn in when you clear a room can damage you for some reason, and there is no indication of where they're going to spawn from. Who thought this was a good idea? It's like a kick in the shins for doing the challenge they set out for you. The upgrades didn't seem all that necessary given how easy the game was; I'm sure they become more relevant in subsequent runs but again, you need to draw the player in enough for them to want to actually do that. While random level generation is a fun idea, I think it's a big reason this game feels so dull to me; more deliberate enemy placement would feel more interesting, but because you can't replicate a level designer's intelligence that easily the game has to make up for it by adding artificial difficulty with the aforementioned tiny enemies. To put it succintly, this game absolutely feels like something that would've come out on the NES; unfortunately this extends to the limited gameplay and artificial difficulty. Castlevania, a game this clearly had some inspiration from, still holds up today because of the depth in fighting (you can't just spam attacks and expect good results, you actually have to time it out) and fiendish yet fair level designs. If you're really patient then you may be able to get something out of this, but personally I can't recommend it: for those of us with limited free time, the "it gets better X hours in" argument is not going to cut it

Really great concept and very promising start is marred later on by constant cheap shots that are impossible to avoid.
