Golfing Over It with Alva Majo Funciones

Golfing Over It with Alva Majo is a discouraging game about climbing a surreal mountain with a golf ball, a different take on 2017's hit Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy. Experience the challenge of climbing an unyielding mountain without infuriating controls being part of that challenge.

Bennett Foddy has played this game and granted it his blessing.

  • Golf your way up to the top.

  • Listen as Alva explains why he made such a cruel game.

  • Fall all the way back to the bottom.

  • And if you manage to get to the top?

  • Will that make you feel good?

  • Will you feel that it's all been worth it?

  • I think you will.

The thing that made Getting Over It so successful was that it provided a tough but fair challenge. One that required meticulous and well thought-out strategy, combined with a mastery of the controls. Getting Over It achieved such an amazing balance in this regard, that it became one of the most popular games on Steam upon its release. Golfing Over It does none of that, and that's why it fails. Not because it's a rip-off (it technically is, but that's neither here nor there), but because its challenge is tough and supremely unfair. It suffers from three major problems that Getting Over It avoided. Problem 1: No Safety Nets Getting Over It occasionally threatened to erase chunks of your progress, but let's be real here. The truth of the matter is that 90% of the time you had layers upon layers of platforms beneath you that, at the very least, prevented you from going all the way back to the beginning. Golfing Over It rarely provides that safety net. Most of the time you are in peril of falling all the way down to the beginning of the game, and no matter how far you progress that danger is always there. This makes the game far more difficult than Getting Over It; a game that, in and of itself, was already considered highly challenging. Problem 2: No Reactionary Defense Mechanism In Getting Over It you could mess up badly, and (if your skills were great enough) still save yourself with the flick of your wrist. This added a sense of embattlement; one where you felt you always had a chance, up until that last fleeting fall, to save yourself. Golfing Over It completely fails to provide this and, instead, forces you to watch hopelessly as your ball rolls off hills and your progress is erased over and over again. This is because as soon as your ball hits a surface, your control over it is nullified until it comes to rest. Thus, you are required to put all of your effort and skill into how you launch the ball, and are then left powerless to determine how the ball lands. This creates a fundamental lack of control, which severely hampers your ability to find success in this game. It merely becomes a matter of knowing exactly where to aim your strikes and then hoping for a little luck on the receiving end. And that is a far less entertaining challenge than what Getting Over It provided. Problem 3: Thematic Apathy Getting Over It was a supreme masterpiece in terms of creating bizarre and memorable environments during your ascent up the mountain. From the junkyard, to the devil's chimney, to orange hell; Getting Over It never failed to dazzle with its creepily cluttered and abstract craziness. Golfing Over It, on the other hand, just feels like an assortment of random objects, haplessly floating about in pointless disarray. There's no identifiable themes, nor is there any feeling of environmental change as you progress, which is a failing of Alva Majo's creativity, something that cannot be in short supply especially when you're being accused of plagiarism to begin with. So, in conclusion, what we have here is an articulation of what Getting Over It would have looked like had it been terrible. Truly, Golfing Over It is a version of Bennett Foddy's original vision that has become obscured, botched, neglected, and haphazardly vomited into existence for no reason other than making a quick buck. It's unfortunate, to be sure, but at least it's cheap.

Nice concept which fails to convince. I really like the style of this game and I was sure that a ripoff from "getting over it" would do the job for me, but it didnt. The creator of this game unfortunately did not understand why "getting over it" is so good and so fun to play through. In this game you have less control over your moves because most of the time you are waiting till the ball stops rolling. The best decision for this game would be to plan your moves carefully but you just cant. You dont have time to adjust the next strikes during the time of the flight so its just random mouse movements after all. Also the power you apply is not linear to the force that is applied to the ball, which is an absolute desaster. There is only a little bit of experience to gain, mostly of how obstacles work and where they try to mess with you, but you propably wont really get better. In "getting over it" you can lose a lot of progress when you tilt or just didnt pay attention. This game here just loves to throw you back to the bottom, no matter how carefully you played and how often you tried. So for me it is: + Nice idea + Cheap - No personal development - Concept of try and error - Loves to throw you back

Doesn't have the charm or polish Getting Over It has.

If you needed more things to get over, this game will provide you with a fresh set of challenges. This time you must send the golf ball flying. It may sound simple enough, and even at first you might think this will be way easier than Getting Over It with BF, but the real challenge soon emerges - air-juggling. As long as the ball doesn't hit anything in mid-air, you can hit the ball as many times as you want (with a few caveats). In essence, you're multi-jumping in a very cumbersome, but fair fashion. I like the game so far, and I think it's something worth checking out if you've mastered the art of hammering your way up a mountain. EDIT: Finally golfed over it. That took a while.

As a fan of Getting Over It, this copy is a bit of a letdown. The game doesn't have the polish of Getting Over It. Despite the narrator's claim at the beginning, this game does NOT put you more in control, in fact, the majority of the time you are simply watching the ball bounce about where it may. The narrator understands that the control is what makes the challenge worthwhile, yet somehow thinks that Getting Over It was lacking in control, and this game has more. In Getting Over It, you are 100% in control of the hammer, which directly causes the motion of the character. In this game, you are unable to control the ball after it has first touched something. This means that any mistake you make requires you to simply watch, with no control, as the ball falls down. The level design (at least the portions I've seen on streams/in game) is very poor as well. In Getting Over It, there were ways to fall to the beginning, but they typically required you to make mistakes on top of mistakes (which again, is due to being in complete control and overcorrecting). Here however, there are many opportunities to fall to the very bottom, and each time you do, it will be from a single, uncorrectable mistake. I will probably beat this game eventually, but the time put is definitely not as rewarding as Getting Over It, so even if you were a fan of that game, I wouldn't recommend this one. If you haven't played either one, I would definitely recommend skipping this one in favor of Getting over it With Bennet Foddy.

As someone who really enjoyed Getting Over It (after the rage subsided), I simply cannot recommend Golfing Over It. While it has the same overall concept, the execution falls flat. So where to begin? The narration is atrocious. The accent is so thick I can barely understand half of what he's saying without using the subtitles. The script itself in some parts is almost a direct copy of Getting Over It, with a few choice words replaced. I ended up turning off the narration halfway in because I felt like I'd already heard it all before. The controls in this game are solid, but only when you're actually in control. You move the ball by holding down left click, moving the mouse to adjust your aim and power, and releasing. As long as the ball remains in the air, you can continue to control it the same way, but there are diminishing returns on the power of each hit until the ball settles on the ground again. Once the ball touches ANY surface, it will turn black and you will be unable to control the ball at all until it stops moving and turns white again. This is where the game becomes needlessly frustrating. Trying to maneuver through tight spaces or getting yourself off a wall your ball is wedged into will often cause you to lose control of the ball the moment you move it, leaving you helpless to watch it bounce slowly back down to the bottom. Yes, the controls in Getting Over It were much harder to learn and near impossible to master, but at least you were always in control. You could still salvage a bad fall and not lose too much progress. Any mistake you make in Golfing Over It, it's almost entirely up to chance how much progress you're going to lose. When you fall, there is a chance the game will pity you and bring you back to the point before you fell, but it only brings more attention to how badly it's designed that you would need a free mulligan at all. Making the player always in control of the ball, but ramping up the difficulty of the course would have made the game much more enjoyable. The difficulty curve is nonexistent in this game. There's a few problem areas here and there, but I never felt like the game was getting more difficult as I climbed. In fact, a lot of the higher areas were considerably easier with much larger safety nets. The final stretch was so stupidly easy I didn't even feel any satisfaction from beating it. If you're a fan of Getting Over It, do yourself a favor and skip this one. It's a shameless knockoff, and not a very good one at that.

Not worth the money. Narration is a complete ripoff from Getting over it and the game design is horrendous. Almost like a bunch of google images copy and pasted into the game to create "objects". The worst part of the game BY FAR for me, is that it doesn't work what so ever with multiple monitors. The game says it's fullscreen, but let's you click away from it onto your other screens, freezing the game, and ruining your jump. EVERY FUCKING TIME. It's such a challenge to try and keep my invisible mouse in the tiny window of one monitor without accidentaly clicking onto my other monitors, WHILE TIMING A JUMP. absolutely retarded game would not recommend.

It's Getting Over It but worse. On the surface level, Getting Over it and Golfing over it are very similar, but in reality, they have many differences. For example, in Getting Over It, if you were to fall there'd be safety nets so you have many chances to save yourself, and even if the worst happened, you'd only loose some progress. On the other hand, in Golfing Over It, all you can do is slowly watch your ball falling hopelessly until you get to a solid surface. Getting Over It involves more skill, whereas although Golfing Over It does involve skill, there is a lot of random chance if your ball decides to fall. This game really just seems to be a game trying to cash in on the hype of Getting Over It, without much polish.
