Errant Kingdom Funciones

Errant Kingdom is a queer, high-fantasy visual novel for PC, Mac & Linux, brought to you by Lunaris Games, a tiny team of five indie developers.

After a long delay and porting the game to a different engine, we have now finished releasing the final version in its entirety. Errant Kingdom contains approximately 590,00 words and over 60 CGs in total. Errant Kingdom has also now been brought out of early access.

The Kingdom of Novus has been thrown into disarray, and it's up to you to decide if you’ll help to bring peace, or if you’ll stoke the fires of chaos. Enter a high fantasy world steeped in political intrigue; where magic touches the land and blood turns the wheels unseen. Dishonor & betrayal. Hope & despair. Pick a side, and meet your match.

Errant Kingdom is a story with darker elements at play. As a denizen of the kingdom of Novus, you're at the heart of watching history unfold before your eyes. Whether you see its rise or fall, however, is up to you. There are those who will help you in your endeavors along the way, and might even find themselves enamoured with you. Though, it is also possible to earn their ire should your plans be devious. Only you will influence how the story evolves, and the most important moves to make are yours, and yours alone.

Errant Kingdom features three playable protagonists (with no fixed protagonist portrait, leaving players free to imagine their character as they see fit) and eight potential romance routes (six individual, two polyamorous). You can also play the game without romancing anyone and it will not affect your experience in any way.

If you choose to purchase the game in its unfinished state, your purchase will give you access to the download of the Prologue and Chapters 1-5. When the final, complete version of the game releases in December, you will receive this as a free update. We have no in-game purchases, and this one-off cost will give you access to a potential 240+ hours of gameplay when taking into account our 8 romance routes, our no romance play-through, and our three different MC roles.

Each play-through has the potential to be vastly different, depending on your choices, your actions, and the way you interact with those around you!

Features

  • Three unique character routes; The Knight, The Ambassador, and The Nomad

  • Six individual romances & two polyamorous romances

  • LGBTQA+ cast

  • Choose your own pronouns

  • Option to pursue romances without sexual content, or to play without romancing anyone at all

Love Interests

Errant Kingdom has a LGBTQA+ cast of love interests, each with their own unique backgrounds and intertwining stories. You will begin the game as merely an acquaintance, but as the story progresses you will have the chance to spend time with each of them. Eventually, if you choose a romance route, you will become exclusive with one (or two, if polyamorous options are selected) of our love interests, and will gain access to special scenes, CGs, and conversations.

All six love interests are romanceable individually, and our polyamorous relationships are Lucien & Raiden, and Maja & Erik. Roux is asexual, and Livia is demisexual. Our story is linear, so once a romance is selected, you will still interact with all of our other cast members! We're trying to bring an RPG style of gameplay to the Visual Novel world, and this is one of the elements we're most passionate about executing well.

The release for this game was pretty rocky, though that's not really the reason for the negative review. I don't think the develop acquitted themselves particularly well with respect to the release or the communications about it, but the full game is, at least, out now. This is a good example of a game that deserves a "meh" option in between positive and negative. There are a few things to like here - the art is sometimes nice, the game is very inclusive/diverse, and there are a few scenes that are interesting or fun. Overall, it's challenging to recommend this game. There are numerous technical issues with the writing (typos, poor or misplaced punctuation, the wrong words being used), and they are prevalent enough to be distracting. More substantively, though, the quality of the writing is extremely variable and the overall story doesn't make a ton of sense. Unfamiliar characters show up in the final chapters with surprisingly central roles, which undercuts the emotional weight of their actions. Additionally, although it's a visual novel, there are basically two choices to be made over the course of the entire game (one about choosing your love interest). Again, it's a visual novel, so I don't expect big gameplay elements or anything, but the inconsistency of both the writing and the art - which ought to be a visual novel's strengths - make it harder to enjoy. There are also a lot of plot holes and places where character motivations or actions don't stand up to much scrutiny, which makes the overall experience feel rushed and shallow. In the end, I wouldn't recommend this one. There's just not a whole lot *here*. It very much feels like this could have used more editing: a copy editor and a developmental editor would have gone a long way here. There are things to like, but it all ultimately feels fairly flat.

TLDR; Honestly? This doesn't even hold a candle to Lunaris Game's other title, When The Night Comes (WTNC). I would refund if I could. I was a purchaser of early access and was excited by the impressive story of playing WTNC as well as the introduction to their other work in the store. The art in this game is gorgeous as it always has been, but there are numerous drawbacks even upon their final release. First and foremost, the chapters are being released fortnightly after eons of just being partially released, and even then, there are spelling errors and a few minor bugs in scenes. Moreover, some of the dialogue of certain characters is poorly written and gives the impression of half-baked effort put in the transitional scenes before the main narrative. Second, it's true this game isn't even partially voiced, and that's not necessarily a drawback, it would've added SO much. Third, interaction with love interests is.. fine. Occasionally speaking with them feels like talking to a wall. There's a lot more that could've been done to breathe live into them and yet it just falls flat. Fourth, the story pacing is foul. Upon writing this review, I have personally played up to the most recently released chapter, which is 5. We have one love-y scene with our LI, and then we are thrusted back into the narrative with little interaction besides some cute conversation in maybe two instances. The game should've been longer if the release of the next chapter will be the concluding one, because the way it is currently makes me uncomfortable in anticipating a finale when it feels like we're still in the beginning stages of the story. Overall, communication with the devs is poor, this visual novel is probably not worth your money, and unfortunately it's just a flat experience.

I love the artwork and the wit in the writing, even in such a short prologue. Each character is unique and with the brief introductions we are given, I had a hard time pinning one person down to archetypes or cliques. They are wonderfully done basically, they aren't one dimensional. There is a diverse cast of people from all walks of life and I'm hoping there will be a bit more history or background information given about this world somewhere or sometime. There are grammatical errors in all routes, and a few backgrounds that do weird things, but nothing that's overly distracting. I'm wondering if the "race" option actually does/mean anything as it seems you are nothing more than human to everyone else, which is, at this point, a common short coming of story based games that give the option. And I'm only slightly salty about Cedric not being romancable :) Slightly. But it's a solid start of something grand if those are my only complaints from playing through all three routes. At present it is only the prologue, with a promise that chapters will come out bi-monthly. I look forward to its continuation at the very least.

Review time....for the parts I played already Alright, so I played Ambassador pursuing Lucien as my first interest and all others later, and played Nomad with Erik and Lucien as my love interests. I am quite controversial about the game.... Let me start off with good stuff and say how much I appreciate game has nongender specific, transgender characters and, moreover, this game takes it to the next level and allows players an option to go for polyamory relationships, which is very innovative. I loved that. It's amazing and I respect it a lot. Art is quite unique and nice. Well colored, well drawn and easy on eyes. and.....that's pretty much it.... So...what I disliked about this game: Sometimes it felt like dialogues were made just because they had to be there. By being vague, 'mysterious' and 'deep', by having too many big words and long sentences, it felt like they supposed to mean something to readers except they did not. Not that I did not understand what was said, I simply did not see a purpose behind words. It was painfully stretched into long-long discussions that were unnecessary and just simply boring. Do not get me wrong, I don't mind reading/playing games where characters beating around the bush, only if it serves the purpose, but here... It did not...at least it felt like it did not Next, Into (prologue, chapter 0, whatever you call it) was not catchy, it was rushed and provided too little information. At the beginning, game intended to do so called 'info dump'. Ok. no issues. But It still did not explain enough. Who is where? Where is protagonist? Why? How many kingdoms? Who are the people? Fae? Dwarfs? Gods? Demos?... what? I hoped at least I would get a better idea what is going on later in the story... but no. that did not happen too. Thus, another thing I found this game to luck is story building. People are buying a story, a World, created by someone that we know nothing about and the game here did little to explain what is going on in this universe. Instead of understanding the World better and discover piece by piece of how things are, I ended up with more questions than answers.... I felt empty, almost ignorant, when the big twist happened. Like, oh, damn, whatever.... World-building was so poorly made that if someone asked what this story is about I would say 'you know...fantasy..with one or more kingdoms fighting for something. Oh, and there are Demons and Gods somehow...and something else happening...' It also stands out how behavior of the chosen love interest changes after we make our choice. Affection almost went from 30% to 100% towards protagonist... felt awkward, felt weird, felt pushed, felt immature...felt almost like someone dozen them with love potion to act that way (even if you choose to go for the same interest from beginning and not to flirt with others, it still feels...wrong) Additionally, the routes of some love interests were more descriptive than others, and felt like more affords was put into them. disappointing... And the delay? I do understand that making games is tedious and time-consuming, but as a buyer I am confused on how little has been done from the first time I bought this game up until this my edit(Feb 7th, 2022). I am also shocked to see that multiple projects were launched by this company as when this project still very far from being completed. Or never completed? Cause I have no idea what is going on. All in all, this game is worth checking for pretty images, some story and a speak-peak into some fantasy World. Game felt rushed so at this rate, at this stage, I probably would not buy, probably only with discount...big discount...or for free P.S. While playing, my mind kept jumping to other projects that were made on pure enthusiasm and open for everyone to play them like Oathbreaker, Tale of Crowns, Wayfarer and etc. Errand Kingdom reminded me of their embryo. Promising, but not completed and a bit empty

They Bamboozled us hard. I supported this game, had patience, not even once complained. IN FACT, I called out folk on Twitter for giving the devs a hard time. The fact that they removed every episode that was out FOR YEARS, after promising for a whole year we would have the game finished by December. Actually, I would have not minded if they had said "you know what? we're moving the release date to February, sorry it is on us, sorry this sucks I know but this is something that happens, we are moving the release two more months to have it perfect" I would have not minded, but the re-release with MISSING chapters is such an ugly perverse thing to do. They have been working on that damned underwater VN or whatever, and ever since they stopped caring about this. To me, the other game is cursed now, and utterly ruined over how they have abandoned and mistreated this title over the other one which in all honesty does not even seem that good. I would have much preferred the honest truth that the chapters were not ready, and that we needed to wait a little bit more. I would have understood. But this? This is blatant disrespect and an "eff off" to everyone who MONETARILY supported the game. Awful behavior.

I'm at Chapter 3 for now, but I don't know if I'll ever finish this game so I'll write my review now. I can't not recommend it because the game is beautiful, the characters are nice and diverse, the story is interesting, the writing isn't boring, the music is fitting. You can choose your character's gender and race, you can choose your backstory. But. And this is my one big but - the romances. There are 6 "love interests" out of which 4 are involved with eachother. 2 were a couple that you can help get back together if you so wish and other 2 are implied to sleep together, without a lot of romantic interaction. You have the option to go "poli" with these 2 couples as well as just pick one. I'm not a fan of this - two's company, 3s a crowd. I always feel like I'm third wheeling when there's already couples in the game or that I'm breaking them up or butting in where I don't belong. There's already the MC's knight who isn't a romance option who is a couple with someone, so I don't really feel like this needed more "unavailable" characters. I know, some will say that characters having relationships bring realism, but realism is not something I'm looking for in a fantasy VN with romance options. I'm looking for the relation to feel special, not picking an explicit choice of "I will not bring you two together because I'd rather have you for myself". Let alone the option of "I just walked in on you two and I'll tell one of you that I thought we had something special, so the other goes away". Which leaves me with only two romance options out of the 6, none of which are my preferred gender. And this is the main reason why I will probably not finish playing this game.

Art - beautiful, characters - great, premise - decent. Done right, this could have been an amazing game. Too bad it wasn't done right. It seems like there wasn't even an effort made. Maybe initially, before the whole mess with postponing deadlines, diverting resourses to other projects, empty promises, etc. The game was completed (allegedly) by a skeleton crew who evidently were only concerned with finishing it ASAP, just so the players would finally stop nagging. The LI routes and MC of different origins don't get equal amount of content, the romantic content in general is very limited (not at all living up to the expectations set by the first few chapters) and some MC's (*cough* Ambassador *cough*) get literally no more than crumbs, depending on the LI. The pacing is atroucious. The first 80% of the game barely anything happens, as if the writers were feeling like they have all the time in the world for developing romances and unveiling the plot, and then suddenly it was time for the grand finale and they went "oh crap!" and crammed everything they could in the last 2 chapters all at once, but there is only so much you can fit there, so the majority of romance content was cut as well at a number of lesser plot threads were left untied. Some scenes felt really last-minute, half-baked, with filler vibes. A disappointing purshase all in all. But it sure looks pretty. And hey, they have representation. For some players that would be enough, I guess.

I'll be honest I had high hopes for this game as I loved When the Night Comes, but this is letting me down in nearly every facet, and I'm disappointed. Even with episodic releases of the finalized chapters there are still spelling and grammar issues that are glaringly obvious, and the inconsistencies between the multiple art styles being utilized across the game is jarring and makes the same characters look like different people across different scenes. Some of the characters are interesting and compelling, but others the game has to convince you you like in order for them to even be tolerable. It's also honestly startling how much more forward/inherently sexual more of the romanceable dialogue choices are for characters before you have had the option to choose which love interest you are committing yourself to. The pleasant romancing of WTNC has been abandoned for blunt sexual advances. The icing on the cake is the player character just feels like an absolute idiot. Any sense of overarching plot or direction/character motivation is hard to find at the best of times, but when your character keeps aimlessly walking around places on a "gut feeling," as a vessel for finding LIs to talk to, it gets boring very quickly waiting for moments of ACTUAL relevant plot to arrive. It feels like all the genuine plot is being saved for later chapters or to be dropped at the end of each release to keep players coming back, and I have SEEN these developers craft a better and more compelling story, so this really feels like a let-down. Not to mention all of the issues with the development of this game clearly getting shirked and sidelined constantly, it just feels like they didn't care enough to actually polish the game, and instead put out what they had to get it off their hands. I will continue to support future releases from them but this was a serious blow to my confidence as a fan in their ability to produce future content. TLDR; the plot is barely existant, the game tells you how you feel about most other characters you're meant to romance, and the dialogue and art is startlingly inconsistent at times. Wait for the full release if you plan to purchase.

Let me be straight with whoever reads this: I like the game. I love the story and the characters. BUT! It's been in development for years, and there's no credible evidence from the studio that it's ever going to do be finished. This game is incomplete and likely to remain so based on the vague and infrequent communication from the studio. If you get invested in stories and characters (if you don't, why play games like this one at all?), avoid this at all cost. Getting half a story for full price is not what I call value for money. Avoid.

When you waiting that much, all hype and interest in this game is fading. I expected the delays, but that's just too much. Maybe its not a good idea to grab several projects when you have unfinished game that you already sell. Don't know if it atone everything when latter chapters will be released.
