Some of the loot you pick up is locked behind a pay wall.. And then just sits in your inventory reminding you to buy the packs.

So, if you intend to play singleplayer or local coop, I would consider it much better than the mainline EDF games. I really appreciated a lot of the changes made here as someone who doesn't have nostalgia for the originals. However, online coop is barely playable. We experienced constant issues with enemies in completely different locations, and quite a few times one of us would clear out all enemies and the other player still saw half a dozen mechs bearing down on them and have to finish the mission solo. The desync issues make this a major consideration if you are debating picking this up on sale.

No 2k support, 60fps cap, desync issues, can't turn off mouse acceleration, and those were the issues my buddy and I had in the short time with the game. Go buy EDF 5 instead!

I have played multiple EDF games and I really want to enjoy this but I could not get past the low resolution and the bad mouse & keyboard controls. For a PC game this is just ridiculous. First time I launched the game, the ingame text changed itself from English to what I think was Japanese. A restart was required to change it at the main menu. It was fine after selecting English again. Now let me clarify what the issue is with the resolution. The highest resolution for the game offers is 1920x1080 but the internal resolution ingame is a lower. I'd say it feels closer to 1280x720. Anti-aliasing didn't help much due to the low resolution and I thought it actually looked worse with it on. The cutscenes/movies looked a lot better than the actual gameplay for me. The Field of View (FOV) felt very narrow for a PC game but it is playable. It is not customizable so please be aware of this if you get nauseous from low FOV. The keyboard controls isn't necessarily bad but it felt like some inputs were dropped. The mouse on the other hand feels like no one has ever played a PC game. It feels more like an analog stick with a deadzone and poor sensitivity controls. I tried playing multiplayer alone as host and joining with random people but I had lag spikes every 3-5 seconds that made the camera swing me all over the place. In singleplayer, I did not suffer from any lag spikes.

(Updated Review) Now after ~50 hours, I still can't recommend this game. EDF Iron Rain is a decent game, but is an awful EDF game. This game is a downgrade from EDF 5 and a sidegrade from EDF 4.1 so get either game instead. I would recommend EDF 5 since 5 is an upgrade from 4.1. Here are a list of the good parts and the issues after beating the game twice now. The Good: + Prowl Rider is one of the best class and the most fun class in EDF Iron Rain. + The WX sword is the best sword and most fun sword in EDF Iron Rain. + More mission types, like defend the point/objective and hold out until enemy wave ends. + Customization is nice. + Sprinting is no longer awkward. + Subtitles. The Issues: - The Radar Only shows whether an enemy or item is above you, below you, or on the same level as you. Meaning a drone 100 meters in the air is shown to be the same height as a drone 20 meters in the air. - Guns feel awful to shoot and use. Guns fire more realistic tiny projectiles, unlike in the main EDF series where guns fire large round projectiles. So while the guns are kind of more realistic, it feels awful. - Enemies are more bullet spongy. Less enemies mean that enemies are given more health and combined with the weaker guns mean that enemies just feel tanky and soak up way to much damage. - Enemies barely show any signs of damage. Large enemies don't have a noticeable hit or stun animation and most weapons hardly show any signs of damage. Damage is shown via a drawn on damage texture that glows then slowly turns black, similar to the EDF 5 bullet hole decal. Since guns have smaller projectiles, it is hard to tell whether something has been shot since the bullet holes are tiny. Explosions share the same decal as bullet holes and are instead enlarged, but the decal is dependent on radius of the weapon and not damage. This is unlike EDF 5 where the less health means more damage on the creature. So it is hard or impossible to tell how much damage has been done to something that has been shot. - Shopping for Weapons. After 50 hours and obtaining like 8,300,000+ credits I have purchased most of the swords and orbital weapons. I haven't purchased a single railgun or energy thrower and have only purchased a few basic guns and a missile launcher. Since you can't test out guns before purchase and you have to buy health as well, there is no point in buying a gun that you haven't used before. Guns of each rank cost roughly 3 times the amount you get in a single mission. Each mission on each difficulty gives a new gun every 2 or so missions. Meaning you can't buy every gun you unlock and that is ignoring the fact you need to buy health. Not to mention the fact that using items lower the amount of money you get. - Weapon balancing is terrible. Unlike in main EDF games a newer version of a gun doesn't mean a better version of the gun. For some reason the devs decided that a better version of a gun should have some downgrades compared to the older version. For example, a lot of shotgun upgrades get more damage but also longer reload times. The starting shotgun has a reload time similar to EDF 5 shotguns while the end of the line shotguns have reload times similar to or longer than EDF 4.1 shotguns. - Large enemies are not fun to fight against. Large enemies are a bullet sponge and barely have any sort of reaction to damage. The kaiju you fight against have no damage indication, basically imagine fighting erginus in EDF 4.1, but he doesn't do any reaction to heavy damage and there is no blood splatter. The large enemies like this games version of hectors have a slight reaction where they temporally stop moving then resume action. The large turtle enemy does have a reaction and the other enemies should have something like it. - The movement is slower and doesn't get faster. There is no mobility increase like in EDF 5, so all classes remain the same speed at all difficulties. This is like older EDF games and makes it harder to kite and avoid hits in higher difficulties. Since mobility is king in EDF games the fact that you don't get faster means that the game gets really difficult in higher difficulties. - Trooper/Ranger's boost/dodge is limited and has a cool down. The second slowest class in the game that fights in close range can't constantly dodge. Combined with the enemies faster speed this means that once you get swarmed you die instantly since you run out of dodges quickly. - Missions are short. Basically every mission is like mission 3 of EDF 5 (Or mission 2 of multiplayer) or mission 1 of EDF 4.1. 3 waves of similar number and that is it. - Difficulty is just difficulty. Unlike EDF 5 and 4.1 higher difficulties mean enemies are just harder there is barely or no changes to maps and enemy types. In EDF 5 and 4.1 higher difficulties mean there can be an extra wave or advance enemy types spawning in missions. - Ai companions are worthless. Since enemies are in lower number the developers nerfed your allies into being pure decoration. Allies can't shoot upward and don't shoot towards the enemy. And the enemy hardly aggros on the npcs and instead home in on the player. - All large enemies have a set death animation. Basically all enemies larger than an ant does an erginus death animation and then their corpse sink into the ground after a certain amount of time. You can't move their corpse and it sits there blocking you. There is also a glitch where an enemy can play a death animation twice, where after finishing a death animation if the corpse gets hit again it restarts the death animation. - Stagger and knockdown in EDF Iron rain is the worst in the series. Instead of being slowed down you play a staggered animation where you can't shoot and for prowl rider your grappling hook is broken. Attacks that stagger will result in a knockdown if you get hit in the air. Meaning an ant's acid staggers you on the ground and knocks you down in the air. Unless you use swords you will constantly have to deal with this since swords have a super armor ability that makes you immune to knockdown and stagger. This means that grappling hooks aren't broken and is a must have weapon for any prowl rider. - Poison and other effects are a terrible feature. Poison and burning cause damage over time that staggers you whenever you take damage. A poisoned or burning prowl rider is as good as dead since your grappling hook is automatically broken after a few seconds. - Heavy striker uses double the guns, but reload is doubled meaning most weapons are terrible for striker. - When knocked down you still take damage. - Building debris fall too fast. The demolition is like a zoomed in scale model demolition. - Building debris knocks you down and can stagger. - Explosions stagger you regardless of damage. - Jet lifer can't air strafe while flying without using power. - Health limit is 10,000. - 52 missions means not a lot of content. - The boss fight is the worst of the series. - Motion blur seems to be on, regardless of setting. - Customization menu is cluttered and a mess. - Voice setting also affects enemy death sounds so you either choose to have a hard time hearing allies chatter or going deaf from death screams. - Ally chatter is always sound distance and doesn't come from the ally but instead from a random direction. Radio chatter is the same as EDF 5 so that is fine. - No song and chanting. There is a chant like emote, but there is something awful about it. - You have to buy each cosmetic's color individually. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that cosmetics can cost 90,000 credits. - No big punching robot. - The big main kaiju fight is just a set of cutscenes. - Health drops heal less than 30%. Small ones heal probably 10%. Unless you bring healing items don't expect to heal much from health drops. - Item pickups can spawn outside of the play area and you can't each them. - Pillars are a terrible since they activate from ally gun fire.

I can overlook all the other technical issues, but AIM ACCELRATION THAT CAN'T BE TURNED OFF? It's unplayable! WHEN WILL DEVS UNDERSTAND THAT AIM ACCELERATION SUCKS? It NEEDS an option to turn off aim acceleration. Until then, stay away from it. **EDIT** the game was patched after two weeks, and after trying the game i'd say go play EDF5 instead. Iron Rain is just boring. I played 200 hours of EDF5, i can't bring myself to play more than 5 hours of Iron Rain.

Update: 15 days after release devs fixed all things mentioned in this review. ------BUYER BEWARE------ Different dev, same shit behind every flaw in the game as in EDF 4.1, 5: some extreme flaws can be fixed by literally changing numbers in text file, but freaking devs wont do it for some bizzare reason 1) Mouse controls are аss - it seems that mouse just emulates gamepad stick. But it is Unreal engine, isnt it supposed to have proper mouse support from the box? Wtf? 2) Graphics are very blurry, Like you are playing on 720p. Guess what, it is because you are. By default resolution scale is 75%. But you cant change it in the game menu (why????). And you cant change it in config files, because game ignores them (why???????). You need to use third party software(link in the comments) to unlock console and change resolution scale through console commands. Absolute madness, I dont have a single idea why devs did this bs. 3) Sometimes dashes glitch out and you will dash forward right into enemy projectiles no matter what direction you are actually pressing.

To put it simply, this is a decent game but not as good as EDF5. EDFIR was made by a Japanese company in a vain attempt to appeal to western audiences. There will be a lot of comparisons to EDF5 here. In the end, buy and play EDF5 first, and once you've had your fill and want more but of something a little different, check out EDFIR.
The good
+ I really like earning credits and gems each mission. This gives you a sense of continuous progress. EDF5 you earn armor (health upgrades) as well as new, random weapons. This means once you've got high level weapons in EDF5 there's no reason to play an earlier mission except to beat it on certain difficulties with certain classes, or to farm armor drops. EDFIR you're always getting something for beating a mission, but similarly there's little reason to play older missions because later missions give more credits and gems. + The item system is great in EDFIR. Each class is allowed so many item points, and you can equip and carry with you various items that fall within the point limit. There are a ton of items: turrets, vehicles, healing items, defense items, reload quicker items, build energy faster items, resurrect items for you and friends, grenades, mines, and more. If you use an item the cost is deducted if you win. Don't use it and it costs nothing. EDF5 had no item system, but instead they had to be an equippable weapon, like grenades for Ranger, or turrets for Air Raider. Sadly that game has no healing items and you're stuck with loot pickups only. + I much prefer the armor system of EDFIR. You simply purchase higher health with credits up to a max of 10,000. It is significantly less grindy than EDF5 which has you picking up individual armor drops from enemies that boost your health by the mere 10s. + After a mission is over EDFIR gives you 30 seconds to gather up the gems before the mission end screen. In EDF after the last enemy dies you've got about 10 seconds to gather the armor and weapon drops. + Character customizer is great in EDFIR! Change your gender as well as clothes. Unlock clothes from missions. This is the first EDF game to allow you to customize your character. Hopefully future EDF games keep it.
Neutral
+- EDFIR is certainly easier than EDF5. Disaster, this game's inferno, isn't nearly as hard as EDF5's inferno. Granted there are some tough missions, but with the aid of healing items it's made much easier. And online in EDFIR with friends is a joke even on disaster. They didn't seem to scale the enemy's difficulty properly, so with 6 people running around (EDF5 only allows 4 player co-op so that's an EDFIR advantage) people rarely die and the enemies aren't allowed to do much. Conversely I felt EDF5's online difficulty was too much, made worse by the stupid item level limits to try to enforce balance. +- EDFIR has 52 base missions compared to EDF5's 100+. They're about the same length too, maybe even shorter in EDFIR. +- The dialog in EDFIR is all right, but it doesn't have the same charm as mainline EDF.
The bad
- EDFIR has 4 classes like EDF5. The difference is the classes here can use any weapon unlike EDF5 where each class has its own unique weapon pool. This made the classes in EDF5 not only have their own unique move set but their own playstyle too. They truly felt different from each other. Here that effect is much smaller. But in EDFIR armor is shared between them and instead the different classes have different damage resistance which I like. - I'm not really a fan of EDFIR's weapon unlock system. Beating a mission on higher difficulties will unlock specific higher tiered weapons, with no randomness. So once you beat a mission on disaster, you won't unlock anything else. EDF5 weapon unlocks are random and based on a system of which difficulty and which level. So the very best weapons in EDF5 are unlocked on inferno near the last levels. Furthermore, in EDFIR you have to then purchase the weapon to be able to use it, using credits and gems. I suggest you hold off on wasting credits until you see something real good. - EDF is famous for its horrible AI. You aren't a true EDF player until you've died on inferno because your AI buddy literally jumped into your aim just as you fired a nuke, causing you to kill yourself, as your body ragdolls across half the map. Well somehow they made EDFIR's AI even dumber. On the one hand they move super slow and don't normally try to crowd around you, so friendly fire isn't as common. On the other hand they almost never shoot anything! There will be 20 AI buddies standing with their back to the lone remaining enemy as it wanders around. Not that EDF's AI ever did much, but it's worse here. - EDFIR has a distinct lack of enemy variety. Sure there are 4 different types of ants, but they all behave pretty much the same with barely a difference between them. EDF5 has a ton of enemy types and variants that change how the enemy behaves. That said I do like the new enemies EDFIR gives us like the scorpions and bomb beetles. - There aren't as many enemies on screen at a time in EDFIR, but there is a greater number of tougher enemies. I prefer shooting hundreds of bugs at a time like in EDF5. - EDFIR's mission variety is a little weak compared to EDF5 I feel. Probably has something to do with the lack of enemy varieties. - In EDFIR higher difficulty does not change the mission or enemy types. For example, in EDF5 playing on hardest or inferno in some missions would cause there to be some super tough golden ants or silver spiders, as well as sometimes spawning an extra wave of enemies. Nothing at all like that in EDFIR. - EDFIR's multiplayer was practically dead on arrival. Mercenaries, a mode where there are 2 teams of players who work against each other, is a nice concept but there is literally no one playing it. There's hardly anyone playing online co-op either. This isn't really the game's fault, but it should still be stated. - EDFIR isn't nearly as bloody as EDF5. In EDF5 there will be huge blood sprays everywhere from you killing enemies. Here it's hardly noticeable. - So many useless weapons in EDFIR (EDF5 had it's share too), but it's made worse here because in order to use a weapon you have to buy it. And what if it sucks? You just wasted precious credits. No refunds! So you instinctively go into Scrooge mode and hold out only for the good weapons. - Not nearly as many boss monsters in EDFIR compared to EDF5. There's a queen ant, which isn't much different from a flying ant, and that's it.
Technical problems
EDIT: They have fixed all these issues as of October 29, 2019! [strike]They really botched this port. No resolution options and it won't go above 1080, texture resolution is stuck at 75% making everything blurry, mouse acceleration permanently enabled, and mouse movement based on a joystick with dead zone and awkward aiming. Some of these issues can be fixed thanks to players, but obviously we shouldn't have to do it. The devs tweeted they are aware of these issues and claim to be working on them. If they do patch these issues then I will update this section.[/strike]

Not nearly as bad as some of the initial reviews make out. This feels like a more serious take - with the occasional joke in mission narration - than EDF 4.1 and EDF 5. The grind system has been redone. You get credits on mission completion based on performance, time, damage taken, kills, difficulty, etc. In the mission itself, the only thing you concern yourself about picking up now are 3 coloured gems, blue, red, yellow, all of which are materials used in combination with credits to gain access to different weaponry/vehicles. People complaining about having to grind, come from EDF 4.1 and EDF 5 where you also grind - it makes no sense that this is their complaint, you just gather different items in place of Red and Green boxes. The "Class" system has been re-worked. Now you simply swap out your "Rig" between flyers, what is essentially the fencer, a grapple hook varient and perhaps more that im yet to unlock - i know i've seen another. Vehicles and items are now added to the loadout in a seperate screen, using them mid-mission accrues a small credit cost but in the grand scheme, most are minimal at best (70 to 2700 credits~ whether it be a grenade or a vehicle, etc) Combat is fun, some of the rigs are VERY mobile and offer some cool new stuff that I wont spoil, the narration as per EDF norm makes you feel like a badass. This game offers a unique challenge that is enjoyable but there are a few things to note. Helicopter/Flyer controls do indeed have a problem, I suspect it is mouse acceleration because if you turn 180 degrees or even say, 120 - it continues to turn a very large amount and makes it almost unusable. Vehicles like tanks, or other ground based vehicles seem to suffer less. There are apparantly fixes for this but it requires being done every time you load a mission so its not exactly a fix. The other concern is the # of players. I've formed a group and posted on the forums that im looking for people to play with, Lobby limits are now set to 6 players but i've only hit that once and otherwise been lucky to have 2-3 other people, I suspect this is due to all the negative reviews. All-in All, Like any EDF, its not perfect, but it's fun. Just bring some friends along for the ride.
