I am here to echo the sentiment of this game being very underrated and slept on. I came from hundreds of hours of Skyrim, Witcher 3, Elden Ring, and Breath of the Wild. Dragon's Dogma seemed right up my alley. I am happy to report that I wasn't disappointed at all. Dragon's Dogma released in 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and it likely got overshadowed by Skyrim and Dark Souls. But the game is absolutely worth your time, and in many ways it does feel like an Elder Scrolls game if it had actual, good combat. The combat and pawn system are the biggest selling points of the game. The pawn AI is generally very good, and though their dialogue can get repetitive sometimes ("WOLVES HUNT IN PACKS") there is a charm to it, in no small part thanks to how good the voice acting is. You know that feeling familiar to the LOTR films or kids playing DnD? That feeling of being an actual party of adventurers facing peril together in a fantasy world? With the nerdy camaraderie and sense of adventure, like you're a bunch of kids dressing up like knights and wizards? This game (and potentially Elden Ring) is the only game I've played that has actually captured that feeling in the most authentic way. The interactions with your pawns during combat, and the thrill of climbing a huge monster while your mages pelt it with spells is incredible. The combat on its own should sell most people on the game. It has the same satisfying nature to it familiar to anyone who uses greatswords in FromSoft or Monster Hunter games. There is good hitlag and emphasis on timing and positioning. Paired with the climbing system and the incredible music, it lends itself to some truly Lord Of The Rings-feeling moments throughout the game (specifically, it may remind you of when the Fellowship took down the cave troll in the Mines of Moria). The lack of convenient fast travel, besides the few portcrystals they give you is one of my biggest gripes with the game - as well as the lack of variety in scenery in many places. But these aren't things that should dissuade you from the game. I am only 32 hours into the game and yet to finish it, but I cannot stress enough how much this game needs more of your attention. It quickly became one of my favorite games. I am having a blast and I cannot wait for the sequel which was recently announced.

An underrated masterpiece of a game. You get to kill a dragon and abuse a race of slave people designed by god to serve you.

I truly like this game. I'm over 70 and my reflexes are not that hot. The fighting is pretty straight forward without the need for all kinds of fancy. Heck, can just climb the big monsters and whack them over the head until they fall. Well, that's a little simplistic, but still relatively true. I love the replayability (is that a word?). Have restarted quite a few times and it's still fresh feeling to me. There are things I can't seem to do, like catch that darned thief, but that's ok. I'll get him sooner or later. I often go exploring just to see the graphics in the new areas. A good sized map to do just that. Of course, if the devs decided to add areas to it, I sure wouldn't complain. Would love added quests for the new areas. Hint. hint. Some games should simply be expanded with harder areas instead of being replaced with the newest and greatest.

Let me just start by saying that Dragon's Dogma is one of my favorite games of all time. I clocked in countless hours on the ps3 version. It is a wonderful RPG, but it has its flaws, so I'll try to do it justice. In Dragon's Dogma, you are the Arisen, who must kill a dragon. You are joined by the Pawns, strange creatures that look like humans, but lack their will. more detailed aspects of the game are explained below.

    Is the port good?

The port is indeed good. There are no game breaking bugs so far through what I have played. My computer isn't too powerful, but it runs at a good framerate, and the graphics look fine. Speaking of graphics...

    Graphics

The graphics for this game are decent for a ps3 and xbox 360 game. They aren't the most beautiful, but they also aren't the ugliest. Even at the highest settings the game isn't going to get much better. They get the job done though.

    Story

The story of Dragon's Dogma is definitly the weakest point in the game. I personally find it interesting enough, but for you gamers who absolutely NEED a spectacular story, I say don't pick this up. To put the story bluntly, you fight a dragon. That's the main point, though the story gets more interesting at the end, SPOILER because after you kill the dragon, you kill god, become god, and then kill yourself to stop the cycle. All the "main" quests you do lead up to the final encounter, but only in the sense that you do them and then the story progresses. The voice acting in the game is also not the best. I don't think it's terrible as some people say, but it could be better. Again, only adequate.

    Combat

Combat is the main draw of this game. The combat system is sort of like a hack and slash game, but there's more to it than that. You can grab onto enemies, both big and small. Regarding small enemies, when you stun or knock them down, you can take that opportunity to grab them yourself, or hope your pawn grabs them, leaving them vulerable to extra damage from the rest of the party. When grappling big enemies, you climb them Shadow of the Colossus style. Climb to their weakpoint for massive damage, but be careful not to be shaken or knocked off. You also have access to various skills to be used in fights. There are nine available classes, called Vocations, in the game, There are six standard classes to be equipped on either the pawn or Arisen. There are also three hybrid classes unique to the Arisen. Each class has various skills to unlock, but can only equip so many at a time and must be changed at specific places. Some skills when unlocked for one class can be used for other classes as well. Each class also can only equip certain pieces of armor. <*>Fighter: This is your standard melee class. Equipped with a sword in the main hand and a shield in the off hand, this class is best at guarding against attacks, then unleashing its own. The Fighter has access to any three sword skills, and any three shield skills, totalling six. <*>Warrior: This melee class is the hard hitter. Equipped with only a two handed greatsword or hammer, this class can unleash devastating blows, but can not block against them. Unfortuneately, this class only has access to three weapon skills, making it the least varied class. <*>Strider: This is your standard rogue class. Equipped with two daggers and a shortbow, this class excells at short range. It should be noted that the shortbow deals more damage the closer the target is, and that the Strider is better suited using its daggers for combat. The Strider has access to unlimited regular arrows, and limited special arrows. This class can equip three dagger skills, and three shortbow skills, totalling six. <*>Ranger: This is a Strider who trades some dagger skills for a longbow and ranged prowess. The longbow is more powerful than the shortbow, has greater ranged, and also does more damage to further targets, but fire slower. Ranger skills are centered around sniping far away enemies. The Ranger has access to unlimited regular arrows, and limited special arrows. This class can equip three dagger skills, and three longbow skills, totalling six. <*>Mage: This is your standard, well, mage class. The mage is equipped with a staff and has access to various offensive and defensive spells, leading to a balanced spell caster. Besides spells, the mage can also fire magic bolts as a standard attack, or slowly swing the their staff. The mage can equip six spells at a time. <*>Sorcerer: This is a mage who specializes purely in offensive spells. They are equipped with an archstaff, which replaces the swing with a close range energy blast. The sorcerer can equip six spells at a time. <*>Mystic Knight: A hybrid class, a mix of a Mage and Fighter. This class can be thought of as a Fighter with some magic abilities. The Mystic Knight can equip either their exclusive mace, a sword, or a mage's staff with a few spells in their main hand. In the off hand is the Magick Shield. This blocks as well as a Fighter's shield, but with the added bonus of harming attackers when blocking with perfect timing. It can also cast spells to enhance the users shield or weapon. This class can equip three shield spells, three weapon skills/spells, and three staff spells when equipped with one, totalling six skills/spells at any moment <*>Assassin: A hybrid class, a mix of a Fighter and Strider. This is the most versatile class, able to equip daggers or a sword, combined with a shield or a bow. As long a player holds them, they can swich at any time. The Assassin has similar skills to a Fighter and Strider, as well as its own unique skills. This class can equip three skills for each weapon, totalling six at any given time <*>Magick Archer: A hybrid class, a mix of a Strider and Mage. Self explanatory. This class uses a magick bow to shoot unlimited magick arrows as well as cast spells in the form of special arrows. The class can also equip daggers, with some unique skills, or a staff with a few spells. This class can equip three skills on each weapon, totalling six at any given time. These can be changed at will at two certain places, leading to extraordinary variety. I can't possibly explain everything about the combat, It's something you must experience.

    Other things to note

<*>Though competent, the Pawn AI is not always the best at exploiting openings. You can also tell them to shut up in the options menu if they get on your nerves. <*>Some assembly is required in the fast travel system. You must place Portcrystals around the world (up to 10 I believe) then use a ferrystone to teleport there. There is an eternal ferrystone with infinite uses at any inn storage. Don't lose it. <*>New game plus is both good and bad. Good if you want to go through the game absolutely destroying almost everything, bad if you were hoping it would get harder. However, a tough enemy called the Ur Dragon becomes available to fight. <*>Bitterblack Isle, what makes this game the Dark Arisen version, is much, much different than the base game, and also harder. enjoy at your own risk This wraps up my review. These are all the points I could think of to comment about the game. Overall, I give it an 8/10. It is a game with its flaws, but I think it makes up for them with its positives. I highly recommend this game to everyone.

I played this until my eyeballs fell out, and now with hollow sockets I sit down to write my review. What we have here is an honest to goodness Role-Playing Game. Not a linear, turn based mess just a step above a game of checkers in terms of action, nor is it a fussy disaster of dialogue trees with binary "good or bad" moral choices and NPC partners judging your every decision. Dragon's Dogma's gameplay is pretty solid. Character building and leveling are slightly handicapped by the character growth system. Characters are class-based, and classes can be changed almost at any time (by visiting one of two characters), but statistics grow based on what class the character is in when they go up a level. Often this can leave the player with a sense that they're eventually going to end up with abilities too low to finish the game, though this never really ends up being the case. Equipment is a much greater component then leveling, and even the hardest end-of-game enemies can be defeated by a sub-optimal character. The story seems pretty standard for the first half of the game or so; a great dragon steals the player character's heart, and he or she must take up arms, grow in strength, and eventually challenge and slay the dragon. It does a good job of luring the player into a false sense of familiarity before twisting around during the final third of the game. If I offer any more details than that, it will absolutely ruin the best parts of the story, but it really is more complex than it looks on the surface. Dragon's Dogma has a few special, almost unique features that deserve mention. The first is the grab button, which allows the player to bodily pick up and carry or throw around humanoid-sized and smaller creatures. When used on larger, giant monster type enemies, the grab button allows the characters to freestyle climb around to reach hard to get weakpoints. It is occasionally used for puzzle solving, such as adding weight to trigger switches faster by picking up a team mate, or weighing down flying enemies by dog-piling all over it. The second feature deserving special mention is the online multiplayer, which is super-unique in that it includes the other players in a very indirect way. Early in the game, you'll be instructed to create a partner character to assist your main character, choosing their class, appearance, what general strategies they favor, and their personality. The player is also allowed to bring one or two other partner characters along, which are the main sidekick characters of other players. There's a system for rating and reviewing the partner characters before sending them back home, and a partner charactercan exist in several games at once (they don't have to disappear from your team to hang out with someone else,). It's an interesting approach to multiplayer without any multiplayer gameplay, even if it does occasionally feel like a little bit of a chore. The PC release of Dragon's Dogma is missing one notable special feature of the original release; two sets of special costumes based on the armor of the Griffith and Guts characters from the Berserk comic are sadly not available. However, for the list price, the PC release of Dragon's Dogma contains all existing DLC and expansion content along with the original game. The performance of the PC port is overall very good; I have only experienced a tiny handful of bugs or crashes in over 300 hours of gameplay. Dragon's Dogma really is a game worth playing. Take up arms and fight, or flee and abandon all illusions of control. The choice, as ever, is yours, Arisen.

Game is a masterpiece: -You want to hunt giant monsters? You got it. -You want to slay dragons? Check. -You want to explore dark dungeons filled to the brim with angry ghosts and other miscellaneous horrors that will tear you to shreds? Absolutely covered. -You want giant spells so graphically intensive that they'll make your ps3 yellow light, die, and lose all of your saved game data? This is the game for you. Dragon's Dogma has so much replay value. This game never stops giving and will constantly challenge you to the fullest if you're not prepared. Please, please give this game a shot. You will not regret it. I also still love this game despite it originally murdering my ps3 - that's how good it is.

After finishing up every achievement, getting to max level and aquiring the best of the best gear I feel like I should write a review. Most reviews already gave a good overview of what to expect in terms of story, gameplay and so on so I'm not going to bother writing my slightly different x/10 ratings down and instead focus on some of the elements which made this a truly great game for me. Character Customization: in many games your looks (or rather gender/build) have no influence on gameplay. in MMO's I truly appreciate this, but here it matters and I find that absolutely fantastic, because it's a single player game. a small character can carry less and runs slower, but has an easier time grappling and climbing onto large enemies and doing some stabbystabby up close. the differences are not so big that you have to chose a size and build to be effective, but they add flavour. personally I made a fairly short guy as an assassin and he's great at climbing on targets, while my main pawn is very tall and stocky so it doesn't get thrown around so easily while casting (and is a better pack mule). the visual options are very diverse, you can create so many completely different looking characters, it's fantastic. Gameplay: the fighting mechanics are fluid and fun, getting new and upgrading existing skills always adds a lot, nothing boring like 'skill x does y% more damage'. all skills have some use and while some stand out in terms of being great, none are useless. many skills are highly flavourful and change your gameplay up a bit. grappling and climbing monsters was something I haven't experienced in other games so far and absolutely loved it. the main goal is usually to climb an enemy to get to their weak spots (i.e. the eye of a cyclops) instead of weakly hacking away at their armored legs. Pawns: You get to design and equip your main pawn and have him/her complement your character. playing a bow or magic caster from afar? get a nice warrior pawn to aggro your enemies. want to be in the middle of the fray? take a mage to heal and buff you or a sorcerer to nuke everything while you taunt/evade/block your enemies. your pawn is no less powerful than you (apart from being slightly mentally challenged sometimes), which allows you to play as you want. playing a tank never works in other singleplayer games because at the end of the day you need to kill your enemies. here you can have your pawn do the dps if you want. the other two pawns can be rented either from a pool of computer generated pawns or from other players. with a party of four you have tons of options and any kind of playstyle is viable and fun. in conclusion, the pawn system is absolutely awesome and I wish every single player RPG had something like that. Story: Going in I had no idea about this game and thoroughly enjoyed the story and the twist at the end - some call it clichéed but to me it felt refreshingly new, so this certainly somewhat dependent on personal gaming history (I haven't played many JRPGs, which, as I understand it, have often a similar storytelling). Worldbuilding: I absolutely loved how open the world is, how many nooks and crannies there were to explore and how, as a new player, I could wander into an area where I got immediately smashed. What I sorely missed however, was a reason to explore. While it's fun to find a hidden chest, if there's just junk in it which doesn't even improve upon my starting gear, it's rather disheartening. There are also practically no friendly NPCs in the world - a few wandering characters with some quests and unique loot would've made it feel much more open. In general the quests however were interesting and varied and got me exploring around a lot (like tracking down a certain book, negotiating with bandits and either make enemies for life or send a kid on his path to becoming an upstanding citizen back to his previous thug life. there were other options as well, that particular chain had many ways to be aproached) Replayability: Going for all the achievements adds a lot things to do, but at some point you run out. After doing every handcrafted quest (the generic kill x of y are just filler and do not count, they're just there as additional XP sources if you want to level up faster) you will have seen most of the game. Including the add-on I spent over 200 hours on it, so there is a lot of content to be seen - however I still whish there'd be even more to do, as I'd love to spend another 200 hours. Game System Mechanics: this is one of the few things the game is lacking. In addition to your character and main pawn, you can rent 2 other pawns. Playing offline, the computer generated pawns are pretty useless, so playing online is smarter - those pawns will generally be better equipped and more useful in their behaviour. however, online play sucks up tons of time: every time you rest, you have to wait ~10 seconds for an online sync, searching pawns in the rift takes longer, starting the game takes longer. the devs clearly plastered the online features on as an afterthought, what should've been background syncs actually block your game, data is not preloaded, your search filters are reset when exiting the rift and so on. starting the game is also a pain, because the menus load so slowly. you can't reload a save without getting into the menu, so if you want to reload, it will take you about a minute to do so (or a certain trick available after your first playthrough). all this to prevent potential savescumming random loot in a singleplayer game where it really doesn't matter. As I mentioned how diverse and fun the character customization is, one would think it would be fun to have multiple slots in parallel to play different characters. unfortunately this is not possible, again, because of the badly implemented online system (if you want to know the reason, I found the technical reasons within the first few google results). You can redesign your character and pawn easily if you want to, and the stats from level up are so few compared to the stats from weapons it really isn't a problem if you change your assassin to say a sorcerer, but personally, I associate my chars looks with their gameplay and would've rather had multiple saveslots. Gear/Loot: this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, but when I get the ability to customize my characters, I kinda want to see them. But the best gear completely obfuscates your character (at least the medium armor does, it looks a bit like a ninja outfit only leaving the eyes open). This certainly is a game where equipment should've been separated into function/fashion, allowing us to equip terrible gear just for looks while profiting from gear which looks terrible but has great stats. another thing is, the uselessness of most of the gear. there is tons of stuff you'll never use because it's inferior to something else you can get just as easily. some weapons get additional effects when upgraded, like rusted weapons slow down enemies and thus can compete with the higher damage of 'better' gear, but these exceptions are rare. frankly, gear should have been more or less equal, apart from some flavour, and upgrading should've been what makes the difference. Conclusion: this is by far one of my favourite games, one of the few I gladly played through several NG+ runs hunting for achievements and it was a ton of fun. I wish there were more add-ons or a dev-tool so players could extend the game, I absolutely love the gameplay and often want to play again, but realize there isn't really anything to do anymore. definitely worth the full price, but the game is marked down frequently enough if you want to get it for cheap.
