Don't Escape: 4 Days to Survive Funciones

Following a bizarre cataclysmic event that cracked the moon in half, the Earth is struggling with the environmental fallout. Everything is already dead or dying... except you. Or so you think. Don't Escape: 4 Days to Survive is a post-apocalyptic thriller from veteran developer Scriptwelder, creator of the popular horror series Deep Sleep and Don't Escape. Players must figure out a way to properly fortify their home against each night's new danger, as they learn the truth behind the apocalypse and search for a way to safety, if one exists.

Players will journey alongside David, a lone survivor after the end of the world, who finds himself having prophetic dreams... or nightmares. Each chapter of the game has multiple potential variations to encounter, from poisonous fog or spiders to a gang of murderous thugs or a deadly heat wave, and as a result, you'll need to adjust your strategy on different playthroughs. But you don't have forever. Certain actions advance the in-game clock, and you'll need to complete your preparations to (hopefully) stay alive before night falls.

Will you make it through all four days? Will your companions?

Features:

  • A classic pixelart aesthetic and creepy atmosphere from a veteran of horror and thrillers.

  • Logical puzzles and exploration to challenge players without frustrating them.

  • Time mechanics; certain actions advance the clock in a race against time.

  • A post-apocalyptic thriller, with an engaging storyline and cast.

  • Moody and engrossing original musicial score.

  • Multiple variations for each chapter mean multiple playthroughs with new content.

About the Developer:

Poland-based developer Scriptwelder is a well known creator of creepy web-based games, perhaps the most iconic of which is the Deep Sleep series, which has won multiple awards and been played by millions all around the world. The Don't Escape series began as a web game that inverted the classic escape-the-room formula... rather than trying to find a way out, players were instead trying to find a way to secure themselves within, usually from some sort of threat or danger. Don't Escape: 4 Days to Survive is his first full length premium game.

Wow. Scriptwelder outdid himself with this one. The level of content, the different paths and scenarios, endings, everything was just so well done. I highly recommend this game to everyone, and please play his previous games. Lots of easter eggs and shared lore, which really improved my overall gameplay. I'm glad I saved this for last.

Bottom line up front: The quality and style I've come to expect of Scriptwelder. If you liked Don't Escape 1, 2, or 3, you'll probably like this. If you haven't played them, go try it, they're free on plenty of online game sites. Pros: Style is stylistic without being too simple. The amount of detail in environmental effects over time is neat. Plot is solid. Variable scenarios enhance replay value. The entire presentation is solid and fun. Cons: Sometimes gets a little pixel-hunty. Occasionally puzzles are very obscure. Commentary: I loved this game. It's better than what I expected. However, it occasionally ends up with wandering around or save scumming because of obscure puzzles or items I couldn't see. It's still excellent, and while I just finished it, I'll be going right back in after this review. For people who played the first three games, this game is much less strict about getting everything perfectly, but sometimes only getting close means you make it to the next day, but not without some real pain. It's nice to show my appreciation not for one great game, but seven years of great games. I highly recommend this game. Edit: Removed "There's some scenarios that, as far as I can tell, are no-win." from cons. Unclear situations and bugs that stonewalled me have been dealt with since launch. You can still back yourself into a corner, but every problem you have is of your own creation.

WHAT. A. STORY. The story is a masterpiece. I just finished the game (once) and my god, everything that happened from the beginning to the end made complete sense. 10/10 stars for me. Worth every coin I spent on this one. Kudos to scriptwelder!

Foreword: I initially loved this game. I played all of Scriptwelder's previous games several years ago (which I recommend), so I was surprised to see this game on the Steam store. Going into this game, I didn't watch any videos of people playing it, and I highly recommend that you do, too, as it makes the puzzle-solving experience fun. REVIEW: Positives: - It is a Point and Click game I really like Point and Click games, and it is a shame they are a dying art. So, this one is a breath of fresh air. The UI is well designed, and the SHIFT button acts as an item highlighter, which is a really useful tool. - The Art The art design is really good. The graphics are pixelated, which makes it a little hard on the eyes, but the art is really beautiful. One minor gripe is that the perspective is sometimes really off, and it becomes hard to determine how far away something is, but this only occurs in one scene. - The Mechanics The game has a really interesting time mechanic, which only changes time when moving location, or doing some actions. This allows people to solve puzzles in a relatively calm environment. There is also a weight mechanic, which makes your first run really nail biting, as some items are really heavy, and it creates the challenge of choosing what you need and what you don't. - The Story The story is pretty interesting, and I was having fun for the majority of the game, with it being a little bit of a slog towards the end. Otherwise, it was pretty good. Negatives: - It is a point and click game Then again, there is a reason these types of games are dying, and that reason is the fact that some vital items are just pixels in size. While Scriptwelder did a great job of making sure that it would be hard to miss vital items, the majority of players will be confused over seemingly arbitrary item locations. Minor spoiler ahead (I highly recommend you read it, though) :
Check the back of the bus. There is a smear on the second from the back pane that is a hand print.
- The Puzzles Minor spoiler, there is no real puzzles. There is some level of puzzle that comes with figuring out what item to use with what, but there are no real brain teasers that will challenge you. I would say the most difficult puzzle is a pipe game. - The Mechanics The mechanics sadly fall flat. One of the most useful tools is the car, which the majority of players will find and probably fix within the first and second day. The car runs on gas, which is nearly infinite from the gas station, and basically adds 12 free slots which don't count as carry weight, which also ruins the weight mechanic. While this seems like a minor gripe, it ends up being a major one when considering how it messes with the time mechanic. It leaves way too much time left over, and on my first run I didn't need to concern myself with time. It was only when I tried to get the achievement for not using the car did I actually run into some time constraint, and once you know what you are doing, that isn't a challenge at all. - The Characters The characters end up feeling a bit flat over the course of the game, as you slowly realize that the most characterized character is Barry, who main characteristic is his wife is dead. The most interesting part of him is how he explains the context behind the various locales. All the other characters are bland and flat, including the main character. - The Story Sadly, I was disappointed by the story's ending. There were a plethora of ways to take the story, and the game sadly fails to explain anything. The majority of interesting plot points are just explained away by "I don't know, it is just like that". After you see the game for what it is, it becomes a bit of a tedious loop. The length of the game is also extremely disappointing, as it only took me about 6-7 hours to actually complete the game, with the rest of the time being achievement hunting. Overall Verdict: I really enjoyed this game. It was a very nice game, with a few painful gripes, but ultimately I enjoyed the experience. Sadly, I didn't feel like it was worth 15$, and I recommend that if you were to get the game, get it on sale.
