WHAT MAKES US HUMAN?

Detroit 2038. Technology has evolved to a point where human like androids are everywhere. They speak, move and behave like human beings, but they are only machines serving humans.

Play three distinct androids and see a world at the brink of chaos – perhaps our future - through their eyes. Your very decisions will dramatically alter how the game’s intense, branching narrative plays out.

You will face moral dilemmas and decide who lives or dies. With thousands of choices and dozens of possible endings, how will you affect the future of Detroit and humanity’s destiny?

PLAY YOUR PART IN A GRIPPING NARRATIVE

Enter a world where moral dilemmas and difficult decisions can turn android slaves into world-changing revolutionaries. Discover what it means to be human from the perspective of an outsider – and see the world through the eyes of a machine.

THEIR LIVES, YOUR CHOICES

Shape an ambitious branching narrative, where your decisions not only determine the fate of the three main characters, but that of the entire city of Detroit. How you control Kara, Connor and Markus can mean life or death – and if one of them pays the ultimate price, the story still continues…

COUNTLESS PATHS, COUNTLESS ENDINGS

Every decision you make, no matter how minute, affects the outcome of the story. No playthrough will be exactly the same: replay again and again to discover a totally different conclusion.

FULLY OPTIMIZED FOR PC

Detroit: Become Human is brought to PC with stunning graphics, 4K resolution, 60 fps framerate and full integration of both mouse/keyboard and gamepad controls for the most complete Detroit: Become Human experience to date.

Have you ever watched a TV series and thought to yourself, man, this character is dumb. Why would they go in there? Why would they do that? It is so stupid. For me, it happens more often than I would care to experience. But now, YOU can be in charge of your own TV series. That’s right, you can make the characters do dumb things and then know that you made them do it. Much more satisfying lol. So much power. That is only half a joke, because that is what this game is. It is essentially a high budget TV production where you have some sprinkled ‘game-play’. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I quite enjoyed the ride and if you don’t want to read past this point, just know that if you want to experience a fascinating setting with a compelling narrative then this game is for you. Okay now that said, while I am recommending this game, this is one of those times when I really wish Steam would give you more options beyond just a recommend or a not recommend. This is because while the game is fun, the amount of ‘game’ that you actually have here is minimal. The game’s biggest sin, is simply that it is too short. I don’t know that I could wholeheartedly recommend this at asking price (despite the game having enough self awareness to know it is not worth $60). I grabbed it on sale and it was well worth it for me at half price. I do have about 40 hours on this, but each run is going to run you about 10-12 hours if you do the whole story. That’s it. On my second run I managed to get the achievement where everyone that could survive did. That had me at about 24 hours and I have to assume that everyone surviving is the ‘best’ outcome (though I am sure some people may argue this point), so I just didn’t want to play through again to see what the other ‘bad’ outcomes were. The game is 90% story and 10% game-play. I love good stories, that is why I play games, to experience good stories in my favorite medium, but I can’t imagine a general audience wanting to push past a 24 hour play point. The bang for your buck just isn’t there. At $40 you could go get The Witcher 3 base game, or Hades, or even Rimworld, all of which are guaranteed to be a far more robust experience. Let me break this down a bit more. This is my first time playing a Quantic Dream game. I say that because, having never experienced any of their other titles, this was a fresh, unique, and truly excellent experience. It is crazy. The whole thing is crazy, in a good way. The graphics are astounding, the acting is on point, and the story is fantastic albeit with some pacing issues. I mean seriously, the slightest of movements are all acted out, it is so fluid. When you go to pick up something, opening doors, turning to walk in different directions, when there is debris in front of you, the character moves around like a person would, ducking, and dodging, all of it happens smoothly. The faces are ridiculously impressive. Valorie Curry who plays Kara, I have seen her in other shows, so to see her resemble herself so much was insane. The good game-play aspects are REALLY good. I am normally not a fan of quick time events, but here, you feel that tension, screw ups are punished, and not hitting those prompts can result in characters dying. It is all enough to make you want to take an espresso shot before going through those queues. I love it. The highlight are definitely Connor’s chapters where you get to do investigations and rebuild crime scenes while working with your tough but washed out partner. Awesome. All of his chapters are consistently good. The first chapter hooks you in and it keeps that same level of awe the entire time you play as him. BUUUT, well it is not all roses or whatever that saying is here. The consistency of the story quality for each chapter can vary radically, with some chapters feeling like complete filler lol. Markus has the worst of these, having an entire chapter dedicated to just bumbling about finding these graffitis on walls or something, dulllll, nothing happens, the entire section could have been five minutes and had the same effect. His early chapters lag, only for them to exponentially augment in terms of quality later. You could probably argue that Markus is the main protagonist of the story at large. Kara is interesting in that she is the most removed from the ‘larger’ story and she loses points with me, because all you are doing is escorting this kid the whole time. She has an above average start and strong ending chapters, but her middle sections just feel out of place and entirely removed from anything else that is happening in the world. This probably won't be as annoying for you if you are invested in Kara and Alice, but uh, yeah I wasn't lol. OH AND, the absolute worst story blunder in this game falls on Kara's story. They throw in this twist where they think it is supposed to radically change the course of her story, but it just doesn't make any sense, it changes literally nothing. I couldn't think of a single reason why Kara would behave any differently because of it. Trust me, you will know it when you see it. So, consider that I just told you that a run is going to be about 10-12 hours, if you have chapters that are wasting your time then the ‘real’ experience is even shorter. I really can’t ignore how the game shoots itself in the foot with this. I do also just want to mention that the game takes place over the course of 5 days and it feels like there is rain for like 3 of them and snow for 2 of them lol. I get having an atmosphere, but come on guys. There is also a really funny moment where the game is insisting that the situation is creepy through musical cues and lighting and then it has one of those jump scare moments where you see a figure run across a hallway. Except you can clearly see it is just a person and nothing scary is happening. It made me laugh. Okay now, many of the game-play sections involve you doing menial tasks and sometimes the game goes a little too far with having you press and hold buttons just to do basic things (grabbing someone’s arm). It really feels, again, like the game is just wasting your time. Which for a game set up in this way, every minute wasted is felt. Lastly, there are some weird technical issues. When you load it up it has to then separately load up graphics and configure itself. Bizarre. Also, with some of the latest Nivida drivers, graphical glitches happened often. This wasn’t the case the first time I played it, but well now it is happening. Boom. There you have it. The game is fun and well worth the experience. Still, get it on sale if you can, your money is just better spent elsewhere for the price. If you do decide to pick this up, do yourself a favor and play it blind. No matter what happens stick with it, the game is set up to account for people dying or whatever decision it is that you make, just keep going, that is how you will maximize your fun.
