DCS: L-39 Albatros - Kursant Campaign Funciones

The L-39 Albatros: Kursant Campaign is a single-player campaign for the L-39C/ZA aircraft. You will learning basic and advanced points:

  • Low altitude navigation training

  • Learning aerial reconnaissance using real-life tactics

  • Detailed instruction on bomb, rocket, and gun weapon delivery against ground targets, following realistic ingress maneuvers

  • Interception of aerial targets with R-60 air-to-air missiles.

All flights are performed under the supervision of a virtual-instructor. After each flight, he will decide whether or not you progress to the next mission based on your performance. At the conclusion to the training missions, an evaluation flight will be performed to determine how well you have learned the skills of L-39 navigation and combat employment.

Note that this campaign requires DCS: L-39 Albatros, and this product cannot be transferred outside your DCS World Steam Edition installation.

Main features of this campaign:

  • 11 highly-detailed and realistic missions that are based on actual L-39 training requirements.

  • Missions start and end on the parking ramp, which creates an immersive atmosphere of being a "kursant" (cadet) at the flight school.

  • Detailed briefings, flight plans, and virtual instructor pilot help you successfully complete this training course.

Kursant is the best campaign I have played in DCS thus far. This is a fantastic teaching tool for all the skills that real pilots learn, and which sim pilots usually don't care about. If you've played online you've probably seen (or been) that player: Flying approaches way too high and fast, getting lost, asking how to use their navaids, missing wildly with their weapons, complaining about bad weather. If you have access to the L-39 (it's worth it for this campaign alone), you can apply the skills you learn in Kursant to any other airframe and will hopefully not be that player. Despite being labeled as a training campaign, there's nothing easy about Kursant. In fact, it has many of the most difficult missions I've played in DCS. Generally speaking, in DCS campaigns you can get away with flying like a total moron. That couldn't be farther from the truth here. It doesn't slowly ease you into the hard stuff, either. Mission 2, where you must navigate with nothing more than the kneeboard, a stopwatch, and your eyes, skimming the deck at a 200m AGL limit, maintaining strict speed and timing requirements (in a crosswind to boot!) is the single hardest mission I've ever played. After many attempts, man, was it satisfying to finally get it all right. Thankfully changes to DCS's campaign system allow you to easily skip any mission that is just too hard, and for some of these I wouldn't blame you as long as you give it a proper effort - they are seriously challenging, even for a real-life pilot who's had to do it all before. The challenge is stiff, but logical - every mission builds on those previous, demanding that you master the necessary skills of takeoff, landing, and navigation before you can venture off and start blowing stuff up. Kursant teaches you more than how to fight in the L-39. It teaches you how to aviate and navigate. Most players probably don't know that the stopwatch even exists, but here it is mandatory. It's used to calculate distance at a known airspeed, timing turns for attack runs, and planning maneuvers. You're forced to read the terrain, look for distinctive shapes in roads and rivers to determine how much you've deviated from a planned course. The briefings are incredibly dense with laundry lists of planned airspeeds, altitudes, headings, and switch settings, but if you follow them correctly you'll never fail a mission due to a procedural error. Flying within parameters is non-trivial - lots of low visibility, high winds, and turbulence, all in a touchy, lightweight jet with no autopilot. The flight instructor is voiced well, and he's very good at reminding you of the flight's action items so you're not constantly pausing to review the briefing. He's strict, but that makes passing the missions even more rewarding and force you to hone your precision flying skills - you must rise to meet the ever-more complicated and demanding flight requirements. Also, those reflector-gunsight dive angle and offset calculations make a lot more sense and seem much more accurate after you've learned how to set up a correct attack run. If you're the kind of player who just likes to fly the most modern airframes where everything is handled by computers, do crazy maneuvers and generally fly like shit, you'll hate this campaign. Oh my, will you loathe it. The mission completion parameters are incredibly tight, but that's how it is in real life. When you go to get your pilot's license and have to make a 360-degree turn within 50m altitude, and you oscillate all over the sky, they'll gladly take your money and tell you to try again until you get it right. It's definitely not for everyone. You have to really care about improving and becoming a good pilot not to be frustrated by this campaign, but you WILL come out of it a better pilot, and it's a glimpse into the precision and skill demanded of real jet pilots.

I was hoping this campaign would hold my hand a little bit more to learn the L39. Being shut down by the virtual instructor as a virtual trainee or "Kursant" in this campaign isn't fun. The instructor ended my mission told me I needed to go study the books more. Sir, yes, Ma'am! I deal with enough training BS in real life that it really turned me off to the way this campaign started out. I suppose in that way this could be a realistic. I suppose in that way I don't like it. Your mileage may vary.

This was my first campaign in DCS. Overall I found it great addition to the already available (limited) training that DCS has for almost all types. I definitely wish every single type of aircraft in DCS had a training campaign of this sort to properly learn the airplane. Limited A-A engagement (as L-39 is), but still fun... I personally bought L-39 and this, to get myself prepped for soviet style equipment, which is, as we all know, has its unorthodox parts. Downside? You don't find out if you passed a lesson/mission, until you land back at the base, even if you flown the whole route.

Still trying to get past the first lesson. I usually end up with the instructor saying: "Study more and we will try tomorrow." He's right. The stuff in the briefing is a lot to remember: "After takeoff, at an altitude of 15m and speed of not less than 200 km/h, retract the landing gear. At an altitude of 50-70m and speed of not less than 250 km/h, retract the flaps. When speed of 350 km/h has been reached, set the RPM to 100% and continue climbing with an acceleration to 350 km/h to 200m." Add six more paragraphs like this and you get the picture. A proper challenge indeed, but I'm enjoying it. I like the voice acting, too.

This really sucks, one mistake and you have to restart all over again ... I think not even inthe real training with the real plane they do that

This is a really tough module because of the tight pass/fail criteria expected of you. Maybe too realistic and demanding for arm chair pilots. You really need a stick and throttle to progress and lots of practice, practice, practice. Very satisfying when you eventually pass. Make sure to set the instruments to metric in your settings.

Brilliant and valuable campaign. This will teach you things you don't get in any of the other aircraft but you can apply what you've learned(proper ground attack runs, radio navigation etc) in a lot of other old aircraft like the MiG-15, F-86, MiG-19, MiG-21, F-5E, and maybe even newer aircraft if you don't use EGI/GPS. Definitely worthwhile and definitely wort getting the L-39 just for this campaign.
