A cataract is one of the leading causes of visual impairment in Tamilnadu. NHM is continuously working with the NGOs for early detection of cataracts and bring the patients to the Government hospitals for surgery and eventually avoiding permanent blindness.

To accelerate screening the patients NHM in collaboration with TNeGA developed an AI-based Android mobile application that will identify Cataract and classify them into Mature Cataract, Immature Cataract, No Cataract, and IOL. Labeled data is provided by NHM and TNeGA used the same for training. The accuracy level of screening and identification of cataracts is high with the current data used for training.
