Owlboy is a story-driven metroidvania title and it executes its purpose very well. It has a beautiful story, beautiful soundtracks, and a pixel art style that looks wonderful. I believe it's safe to assume that Owlboy is not for everyone due to the fact that there are so many dialogue in it. If you're thinking of buying this game for its gameplay alone, you may not get what you expect for the gameplay it offers is mediocre at best. You can fly, pick up your buddies to use them as weapons, pick up some objects to use them to your advantage and that's it. However, they managed to keep it interesting with various boss battles in my opinion. Puzzles are quite interesting, too. Story is where this game shines best. It has its own unique universe where owls used to be the most sophisticated species of the earth, but their arrogance caused the continents to get separated and float into the sky thus carried civilization with them. What if you're from a species that cannot fly? Well, good luck then. There are also hostile robots that call themselves "Pirates" and they cause trouble for the other people. I won't spoil anything but they have a motive behind their actions. The protagonist, Otus, is the most interesting thing about the story. He was born mute and although he's trying his best, he is constantly getting blamed by his teacher Asio for ruining things, which leads him to have self-esteem issues. Now isn't that perfectly relatable for the most of us? The whole story revolves around Otus' struggle within and he wants to prove himself to the people and most importantly, his teacher Asio. Does he succeed? Well, that's left to player's interpretation, I guess. In short, Owlboy is both heartwarming and a heartbroken experience that should be experienced by anyone who is having trouble about making inner peace with themselves.

I come to you from the space year 2023. If you, like me, wanted to check this out after having missed the hype train from 7 years ago, note that it was a simpler time for indie games when Owlboy released. If a game seemed to be generally polished, it was a HUGE success. Now that polished indies are the norm, we can be critical and truthful: The Bad: - Story is awful. It feels like it was written by someone who saw Yorgos Lanthimos movies like the Lobster and the Favourite, but didn't understand what made those good. This is all to say that the story is full of cruelty but doesn't make a good point of it and doesn't even seem to be aware of how cruel everyone is. This is the clearest when seeing that the jokes are also cruel. - Gameplay is miserable. Seems to want to be a flying version of Metal Slug, but the controls are contradictory, there's no onboarding, and mechanics don't build on each other. There's no dodge with i-frames despite your character taking up a huge amount of the screen, and being around one of the many walls will punish you severely. The Good: - Animation is beautiful - Music is multi-layered and cinematic This would have been good if it were a screensaver instead of a game.

Pros +Best pixel art I have ever seen in a indie game. (yes i'am aware guilty gear has amazing art) +Interesting Protagonist +Amazing Ost +Tight Responsive controls +Did I mention the art? +Meet a diverse and funny cast of characters +6-8 hours on first playthru w/o doing side things Cons -Nothing really it's a masterpiece. The only thing that gave me some pause is that the pricepoint is kind of high. My fears were erased withing 10 minutes of playing the game.

I don't normally write reviews. For any game pretty much. But this ones an exception. I've lost a lot of passion for video games these days. It feels like everythings so 'safe'. No one takes any risks or puts any passion into their work. Owlboy I've had a giant grin while playing. It's almost nostalgic and I've never even played it before. Solid controls. The sprite work in some scenes has just made me sit there and think to myself ".... god..... damn....." 10/10. Go buy it. These dudes put a lot of years into it, and it shows.

Definitely one of my top gaming experiences and for sure the best game I've played since "Ori and the Blind Forest". Owlboy actually exceed the top level of 16-bit platformers and hopefully will be an inspiration for more great platformers in the future. Ah, and I have no doubts that this is the best platformer of 2016.

If Hayao Miyazaki directed a video game I feel like it'd be something like Owlboy. By which I mean; stunning visuals, incredible soundtrack and a wonderful story. The three intertwine so well that I'd consider it to be my Ocarina of Time for Pixel Platformers. And an indie game that's so damn beautiful it made me write my first review.

See written review below or watch it here: https://youtu.be/5yz99GFrr-w
TL;DR: SKIP TO CONCLUSION!
Owlboy is a fantastic 2D action adventure that combines flying with platforming in the world floating among the clouds. You play as a mute owl named Otus. Owls are a highly intellectual species, and you are a complete and utter failure in the eyes of your mentor. You’re constantly failing to live up to expectations, and always letting others down. With the imminent threat of pirates attacking, you manage to make a few friends with other misfits that believe in you. Together, you and your friends embark on a grand adventure to try and help save the world. There is a lot of action and combat throughout the game. Combat is interesting, and I like the mechanics. You fly around, spinning and dashing to avoid taking damage. You can pick up objects to throw at enemies, or heal yourself, and you can also carry your friends. While carrying a friend, you gain access to their unique weapon and ability. You switch between your companions to progress through obstacles, and defeat boss encounters. Changing from one companion to another is easy to do, and it’s often very clear which ally you should be using. At first, I was worried that I would have to monitor the ally’s health while in combat, and keep them safe. Fortunately, they can be thrown around and shot at while they aren’t being carried, so you don’t need to micromanage them. While you’re carrying them, you have to be more careful. If you or them get hit, you take damage, suffer a brief daze, and your friend falls to the ground. It’s not too inconvenient to drop your ally though, since you can immediately teleport them back to you with no cooldown on the ability.
Pros:

great story that's interesting and told well the whole way through
game mechanics are fun to use, and made for some very enjoyable battles
all of the environments and levels are well designed, and offer good pacing throughout the game for a well-rounded experience; there are some areas where you will need to be quick, other areas where you will need to be stealthy, and then plenty of other places where you can take your time
the high quality pixel animation looks absolutely lovely; adorable characters, and nice environments
a lot of detail and character development went into each character, giving them their own personality, demeanor, and
cute character animations (even though Otus is mute, his expressions are always on point, and you can tell what he’s thinking and how he’s feeling)
music and sound effects are done incredibly well throughout the game; the orchestral soundtrack is excellent, and it does a fantastic job of setting the mood
customizable keybindings & controller support

Cons:

no cons or things to nitpick about come to mind
The game is open-world. You can venture back and forth between the different areas as you please. There is a fair amount to explore, and you can find hidden treasure if you want to. You collect these coins to obtain items from the shop, some of which increase the size of your health pool. Owlboy took me over 8 hours to complete, and I loved every minute of it. It’s not a game I feel the need to replay, but if I wanted to go back and collect everything, I could load the save right before the final boss.
Conclusion:
Some people may think that the price is a bit too high. At first I was a bit concerned with the price tag as well, but after finishing my playthrough without a single complaint, I’m completely fine with it. You can tell that a lot of hard work and passion went into creating Owlboy. It’s such a wonderful game, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well-crafted 2D adventure with unique combat mechanics, charming characters, and an engrossing story. It’s truly an excellent game. For a game that took 9 years to make, you'd think that the creators of Owlboy would have plenty of time to polish every little bit of it... And you'd be right. From the gameplay to the music, the characters and the amazing art, Owlboy is a beautiful, fun experience that I'm kind of sad is over. Owlboy is a must-play game that I enjoyed every single part of. And don't be surprised if you often find yourself putting the controller down just to listen to the music and admire the art.

Basically, there is an alternate reality where Nintendo made a SNES 2 instead of the N64, and this was the best game ever made on that platform.

If Owlboy had come out during the height of the Genesis/Super Nintnedo days, it would be a game you'd look back on with heartfelt nostalgia, and point to as an example of how good the classics were back then. How good the stories could be, and how deep you could find yourself falling into them. How fun they were. You'd remember how lost you'd get in the world, and its people, and the fantastic music and art. 'They sure don't make them like this anymore,' you would lament. 'That was a great era.' Owlboy is a good few decades late to the Super Nintendo/Genesis days, but it honestly stands toe to toe with the best offerings of that era, and I don't say that lightly.
